Pleasantly Surprised 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The park itself was better than expected. Small town parks typically are old and neglected, so they end up being run-down. However, I was wrong thinking that about here. The grass was freshly cut, the area seemed very well maintained. The playgrounds and picnic areas were clean, very nice surprise.

- The course layout was pretty good. Most holes had some kind of trees in the way to make you shape a shot. There were tall typical trees and several short, bushy trees that would eat a disc. There were very few holes that were open straight shots at the basket. Having multiple tee boxes throw at the same baskets is of course not ideal, but it is done well with the different color tee signs, I was never confused about were to throw from. Even though most of the holes tee boxes were only 30-50ft apart, it was surprising how different the holes seemed. The only hole were I threw the same disc both times was 9/18, and even it was somewhat different. Both are 230ish feet hyzers, on 9 you have to go around a large, haning tree branch, but on 18 you have to go between the tree itself and the branch which was far more difficult. The course had far more thought put into the layout than I expected.

- The baskets were in great condition, and the tee signs were good. Even the junior/women tees had a nice tee sign that was low to the ground to prevent interfering with a throw from the normal tees.

- The clear signature hole(s) was 8/17 (383ft/403ft). 8's tee sign showed you were supposed to throw an anhyzer around the tennis courts. But there is a clear hyzer gap over the tennis courts, but there is a 12ft fence protecting the course. So if you have the guts you can go for it, but risk OB if you hit the fence. 17's tee is just to the left of 8's and it has about 75ft of super low ceiling trees that make getting to the basket impossible even if you could throw 400ft. But it requires a great throw just to get out of the early trees, if you throw too high, you will have a zero chance for 3.

Cons:

- The course is muddy. It's August and it hadn't really rained much lately, but the side with 1-5 & 9 (and their back 9 counterparts) is almost entirely mud. Most of it was firm enough to walk on and wasn't an issue, but if it had rained recently, I imagine the course would be rough. There was a trench that ran through the middle of that side of the course and it was completely mud and the middle of it seemed like if I had stepped on it, my leg would've been gone. You have to cross it several times, so I just found a narrower spot and jumped, but again if it had rained, it would've made for a difficult time crossing it.

- The tee boxes were weird. They were rubber pads, but they were only 3 by 5ft (I'm guessing), which is far from enough room to do a full run up. However, there was plenty of room behind them. And 3 of the holes (3 of 9 or 6 of 18) threw from the street. I really don't prefer this, but because the streets were either in the park or on a side street that only had two houses and didn't connect to the next street over, I managed.

- The par for the holes is annoying. I understand making the junior/women tees different pars for the longer holes, but the normal tees should be all 3s. The longest hole is 403ft, which is not a par 4. There were a few other ones that were in the 300s that said par 4, which is just the designers being obvious. I got a 2 on #8 (383ft), it was really good birdie to get, but it was not worthy of an eagle.

- And of course mosquitos......it's Louisiana, bring your bug spray, that should be a given.

- Even though from my short time in the town, Oak Grove seemed like a nice small town, but it's not close to anywhere, so it's not convenient at all to go to.

Other Thoughts:

- I struggled between giving the course 3.5 or 4. 4 seemed right, because I was really surprised by the quality. However, exceeding my low expectations shouldn't boost the score, plus if I rated it as "Excellent" I feel like that would mean I'd be willing drive the hour to play it every-so-often, which isn't the case. So 3.5 seems right.

- I would say Lazarre in Monroe and Warfield Park in Greenville are more worth playing, especially since you're more likely to be passing through there as opposed to Oak Grove. But if you are in the area, I would recommend it.

Course looks deceiving 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perfect course for beginners. its relatively short with open holes, but can also be challenging for seasoned players because the lanes are smaller than they look. Has men and women tees

Cons:

only cons are that there are only nine baskets with alternating tees which still is fun but not as fun as the traditional 18 baskets. other con is the course doesn't drain well, so if it rains, its swampy for a while.

Other Thoughts:

dead limb trimming should be done regularly.

Oak Grove Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Small course put in a park in the middle of Oak Grove neighborhood.

Has plenty of shots to challenge you and different variations of the same hole , but different tee's.

Cons:

Wish there was a bigger area to create more holes

Other Thoughts:

Great small course in the middle of a good community. Course offers alot of fun and helps you practice without driving far off to other courses.

There is also a private course nearby that someone owns permission to play.
