Well, its easy to get to ... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well, there's baskets, think I found 5 or 6.
Map provided at campground office.
Very convenient right off Hwy 17, W of 526.
That's about it!

Cons:

The baskets are old, single chain portables.
The course map indicates where the tees are, I think that was the only way to figure out where the tee were, since I saw no other markers.
One of the first holes was across the front yard of a nice house, I'm guessing it's the campground owner's house.
Three of the baskets were randomly placed in a grassy area that looks like overflow parking in the busy season.
Oh yea, it was $2 to play this "course".

Other Thoughts:

I'm guessing this course was set up as an amenity for campers staying there, and they charge $2 to non-campers, "to keep the traffic down", HAHA.
The last hole is laid out pretty well, tee in an open field, through a gap in some bushy trees, to a fairly well guarded basket, huge tree (maybe the namesake Oak tree?) with moss hanging off beside the basket.
Unless you're staying at the campground, this is just a course for course baggers to ring up another one. I wouldn't even bring a beginner here, its such a sad effort. I wasn't even going to bother, but there is no longer a course at Haut Gap MS, and I wanted to get another one in.

Campground Disc Golf

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Oak Plantation Campground is an interesting course layout. Several very good holes mixed in with some not-so-good ones interspersed between the obstacles of the campground make this a course different from most.
- If you only played holes #1 & 9, you're in for a treat. Hands down these are the best on the course between challenge, scenery and design.
- Hole #2 is a solid bomber hole, coming in at 699 feet. I've never had a large boat sitting in the middle of the fairway before, so that presented a new challenge.
- In an of themselves, holes #3 - 8 are all ok. The types you'd see in a standard, beginner friendly 9-hole course. You're in for a challenge or frustration with campers, RVs, a picnic shelter and other various obstacles coming in to play. Oh yeah, and these 6 holes play to only 3 baskets.
- Tees are well marked. Once I found the first tee, it was easy to navigate the rest of the course.
- Friendly staff. The GM / course designer saw me struggling to find the first hole, so he gave me a guided tour of the entire layout. Now, if I could have the golf cart to play the entire course......
- Good location for whatever suits you. You're within 20 minutes of seven other courses. You're 20 minutes to the beach; 20 minutes to the historic district. Basically, if you're playing here, you're doing alright.

Cons:

The cluster of holes 3 - 8 are going to be the eternal sore thumb. You play the three baskets in a clockwise version: teeing off at 6 o'clock, finishing #5 at around 3 o'clock. Then you find a marker for #6 and play the same loop essentially backwards.
- Why is this an issue? For starters, you're throwing over or around the picnic shelter on #3, 5, 6, and 8. In the flow, you've got tee areas in the fairways of other holes. You're also going to confuse yourself trying to figure out which basket you're supposed to aim for and from which tee. Even with my tour beforehand, I can't say for certain I did play these holes correctly.
- The first tee is illogically placed. The basket for #1 is right behind the main building. To get to the tee, you walk the length of the entire fairway backwards to tee off. Have #1 tee off right there, play it towards the water by the current #1 tee, and boom, you've got your first two holes.
- Course won't always be available to play. During peak times, you're going to have campers scattered all over the fairways. I'd say this is only an issue for the camper who is staying here and hoping to play.
- Better signage would help. Better baskets would be even better. Course designer / GM said the local club is supposed to help with some general course necessities - more baskets, signage, tee areas. Any of those will make this a better course.

Other Thoughts:

Oak Plantation has the potential to be a nice 9-hole (or more) layout. The biggest make-or-break will be how many additional baskets can be added to break up the cluster of holes #3 - 8. If you can ever get it to the point where these 3 baskets are only for 3 holes, the course will be in a better position.
- #9 is an enjoyable hole. Your teeing through a gap or over a row of trees. From there, the approach is to a basket protected by a large tree. Fun closing hole.
- Getting in and out of here can be a challenge, especially if you're trying to make a left onto 17.
- You can easily play 5 - 7 courses in one day in this area. This is going to be your stat-padding course. Until the course is more spread out, the entire property is utilized (i.e. incorporate the pond behind #1 tee), that's all this course will be.
- There's potential, and you can see some fun layouts here. Maybe they'll set up some temp baskets sometime, bring in a food truck, host a tourney, and let players see what the possibilities are.
- A basic nine hole layout with a couple nice holes and a lot to be desired. It's right in the 1.0 - 1.5 range with my default going to the higher number.
