Good open course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-The course is easy to find and the 18 holes play in two loops around the main parking area.
-People care about this course. It is always mowed. There are no thorns or poison ivy, which puts in a couple notches above some other courses in the area like Northampton.
-The baskets are generally easy to spot from tees.
-Multiple tees for people who can't throw as far.
-There's some cool topography. Throwing over gullies, pins that are placed right next to steep hills.
-Although there's not much woods, the wood holes that exist are pretty cool, especially hole 17.
-Hole 1 has a nice water feature that is scenic and adds some fun challenge without posing too much of a threat of losing a disc.

Cons:

-The course is too long and too open. 600 foot holes with no obstacles makes for tedious golf for many of us. Even the red tees are long and don't offer anything different than the longer tees. This is my main criticism. A bunch of holes are just long, flat, and open. If you can throw 400+ foot bombs, I bet this would be fun. If you max out at 270 like me, it's not great.

Other Thoughts:

Disc golf courses need some trees, some obstacles, things to make them dynamic and interesting. Courses need plenty of these to reach their full potential. Unfortunately, Oak Ridge doesn't have enough. That said, it's a totally solid course. We're talking 18 real holes with multiple tees, real baskets, and real people who really care about the course. That's totally enough in my book to earn a 3.0 rating. In my opinion, there are better options in the area like Westy Acres, Tully Lake, and Flat Rock. If you love to throw bombs, you'll enjoy this course. If you live in the area or are bagging courses, Oak Ridge is totally worth checking out and paying the $5 fee. I hope they'll find ways to adjust the course in the future to incorporate more trees or other features to make the golf more interesting and technical.

Of The Bespoke Oak Ridge A Smidge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Numbered baskets have 'next tee tape' wrapped around one of their upper spokes.
+ Tee signs have all the information and a good diagram.
+ The whole course plays in a spacious, quiet and hilly former ball golf course. There are plenty of wide open holes. But...

Cons:

- ...The whole course plays in a spacious, quiet and hilly former ball golf course. There are too many wide open holes.
- All of the tee areas are just former sports turf segments plopped on the ground.
- Many of the tee sign posts aren't installed yet. Some tee signs are just tacked to trees, and a few were missing altogether.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole to look at was hole3 because of the nice elevated vantage point at the bottom of the course. My favorite hole to play was hole17 because it was such a delightful surprise to encounter a downhill tunnel shot in the middle of all those fields. My least favorite hole was hole5 because it was a straight, wide open and flat par 5 that had no features other than distance.

That is by far Oak Ridge's biggest problem. It has the bad fortune to occupy a former ball golf course, which obviously means lots of empty space. Thankfully, there is a nice stretch of three or four holes in the back nine that play though woods, but they are over with too soon. Put simply, a lot of these holes felt like a slog. I don't mind holes with a lot of distance, but I do mind when it makes up the vast majority of the course's holes. All other things being equal, it is harder for a wide open disc golf course to earn positive marks than a wooded one. All of that open space means a lot of potential, though! Planting trees in several spots would be a good start. It can only contribute to Oak Ridge's challenge and scenery.

Speaking of scenery, this place has some nice real estate. I was delighted to see a bar right there next to the parking and thought that I would grab a brew before playing, but I was disappointed to discover it was closed during my visit. The player comes across a few hunters' blinds In the back nine, which tells you just how silent it can get here. There is even an unmistakeable 'hangout spot' at a certain spot on the course with a firepit, chairs, trashcan, candles and a few other comforts. There is a lot of room to stretch your legs, and the only road is very seldom traveled. There were moments when it was so peaceful that all I could hear were waterways, birds and my own footsteps. Yes, the grounds are quite nice and clean, but as I've already mentioned, the golf itself has a lot to be desired, not to mention much of the infrastructure.

I suspect that Oak Ridge is yet unfinished. I saw plenty of small flags implanted into the ground marking, I imagine, where tee pads could go. Sports turf is usually a good sign that changes are to come. So, it may be a little early for me to publish this review, but all 18 holes are here and ready to play, and there is a donation box installed within the info board. So before you pay your $5, just know that it's still trying to find its voice. It's well worth the $5. Get ready for a vigorous walk!
