Best 9 Hole in Massachusetts? Not For Long (Back 9 Opening June '23)

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well thought out course design and flow. Design takes full advantage of available elevation, space and natural features. Perfect combination of fun and challenge, I would recommend to any ability level to have a good time. Amenities are perfect. Signage is top notch, tee pads are beautiful and baskets are brand new Discatchers. Course begins and ends at a brewery, a huge pro.

Cons:

The ground behind some of the tee pads slopes off, so if you have a James Conrad-esque run up (like I do) it may feel a tiny bit cramped on just a few holes. However, the tee pads themselves are huge (~10' x 5') so at that point it's on the player to adjust. Seriously, that's the only negative I could come up with for this course and it's not even a con. This course is great.

Other Thoughts:

Unfortunately this course is about to lose the title of "Best 9 hole in Massachusetts" given to it by previous reviewer Esiersdale … because the back 9 will be completed by the end of June. I have no doubt it will transition smoothly to being one of the best 18 hole courses in Massachusetts once all the holes are finished.

Oakholm is not the hardest course I've ever played… but that's okay and honestly a good thing because it's located directly in between Maple Hill and 501, both of which will gladly give you the butt-kicking you desire. Speaking of those two courses, if you live anywhere within a 2 hour drive of Worcester grab your best DG buddies, your hiking shoes and a bunch of water/snacks and follow this itinerary for a mind blowing day of disc golf:

- Get up early and play Maple Hill right when they open at 9 (Be sure to book a tee time in advance so you don't have to wait)
- 30 min drive from Maple Hill to Oakholm Brewing
- Play Oakholm Brewing DGC (hopefully once all 18 holes are completed)
- Relax, recover, drink a beer or two and enjoy a wood-fired pizza for lunch in Oakholm's Beer Garden. There's even a practice basket in the beer garden if you want to stay loose/practice some of the missed putts from the 2 previous rounds
- 15 min drive from Oakholm Brewing to 501 Disc Golf Course
- Play 501 Disc Golf

At this point you will have played 3 rounds of difficult New England disc golf and are probably ready to not see a disc for a little while, so hit another brewery (I would recommend Timberyard Brewing Co in East Brookfield, great beer, great food and tons of live music) and revel in the fact that you were able to play three 4.5+ star courses in one day.
