Not so technical, college? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This technical college campus has a nine hole course that won't overly press the skill group of its target audience: students and faculty at the beginner to recreational level wanting to get in a quick round between classes. Reasonable signage and nice DisCatcher baskets are set up to maximize the variety possible here, with holes ranging from a 117' corner-of-the-pond ace run with pines just past the basket, to a 345 footer with an open rhbh hyzer approach line, and a finishing technical wooded gap-runner.

There are opportunities to shape shots in both directions, and to control through some ceiling branches. You could even play a couple of the holes with interesting out-of-bounds lines using the sidewalks and driveways. Overall, this quick sampler for the target audience does its job fairly well.

Cons:

Obviously safe and judicious throwing is required if classes are in session. Though the course particulars indicate 'down' and 'up' hill on the first two holes, they're not, really. And 'water' on holes 2 and 3 mean a 30 foot sliver of a pond on hole two and a couple of large storm drain culverts to the right on hole three's approach. Otherwise the course is flat. The tee signs look like they've been attacked, with some broken off, hole punched, or missing. There is no designated tee (pads, boards, or even, really ruts), so you throw from near the signs.

Other Thoughts:

Needs a map, but until someone local throws one on here, my best advice is to drive around to the right side from the entrance to the first public lot and park. Walk into the center of campus, and you'll see the first basket and tee at the bell tower. The course effectively spirals out counter clockwise around the campus, with the first two holes inside the buildings, then you walk out to the right for the longer hole 3, and a LONG walk (past the stop signs) to hole 4. Hole 5 is missing a sign, but the dirt is clearly worn down where they tee. Cross the drive to throw 'out' on 6 and 'back' on 7, counterclockwise again for the short hole 8, and then it's left across the drive and throw 'inward' for hole 9.

OSU Marion: Beatiful Campus, Solid Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

OSU Marion is a branch campus of THE Ohio State University with an enrollment of just over 1,300. This suburban campus boasts 187 acres and eight campus buildings.

The course starts at the bell tower and moves counter clockwise around campus. You get a nice tour of the property when you play the course.

+ Custom color DISCatchers with red/scarlet bands on the top. Eight of the nine holes also have very nice large signs.

+ This is a beginner's course, but there's a nice array in distance. Holes range from 117'-345', playing through the scattered trees around campus.

+ It's a campus course, so obviously you aren't going to have crazy elevation changes, long water carries, etc. However, there are a couple of standout holes, my favorite being #9. It's a 250' tunnel shot to an "island" green, if you're playing concrete as OB. #2 and #3 also stand out in my mind.

Cons:

- Flow is pretty awkward on the first four holes. It's pretty easy to follow, but long walks between holes. Things improve in terms of navigation after that point.

- Not a whole lot of challenge here, as it is meant for students to play a round between classes or something along those lines.

- No designated tee pads, just a sign marking the general area of where to throw from.

- Course probably would be unplayable during school hours, many holes cross over walking paths and play around common campus areas.

Other Thoughts:

OSU Marion really isn't a bad 9-holer by any stretch. There's a few stand out holes, not to mention the campus is gorgeous. But the lack of challenge and student traffic will weigh down the rating a little bit. The students are lucky to have this here, and I hope some will utilize it!
