Okee - a good course in a large park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful, large park in Palm Beach County. The course is located away from most of the park activities except for a walking path that crosses several holes and parallels the fairway on a couple of others. There is a dog park nearby, but that shouldn't come into play.
There are two good, DD Veteran baskets on most holes, White and Red. While I've seen this on a lot of courses here in FL, those normally have the baskets consistently either short or long, but here they are not consistent, sometimes the white is long, sometimes short.
Multiple tees on every hole, from Gold to Green and everything in between. Normally there are only 3 tee pads per hole, usually Gold/Blue, White and Red/Green, these are concrete and a good length, but generally not too wide. Other holes have 4 separate tees.
Really good tee signs at two of the tees, usually not at the longest. These are very good, with a hole diagram, each tee location and distances from each tee to the Red and White baskets.
The holes are mostly open, with several water carries and no tightly wooded holes. The open holes have a few trees to avoid on each, so shot shaping is needed to score well. Most of the water holes do have a bailout point, but not all of them.

Cons:

I really wanted to give this course a high enough rating to impact it's 3.20 rating. But there are enough things wrong to limit its overall rating, most of these are maintenance issues, but they need to be addressed.
The grass needs to be cut on just about every hole. It didn't feel like I just missed the cutting schedule by a day, there are holes that felt like it hadn't been cut for a couple of weeks.
There essentially are 4 holes with water carries 4,5,7 and 14, on the first three, the carry from the long tees could be minimized with a RHBH hyzer, kind of tough for lefties. But the biggest issue on those three are the amount of trees and brush growing on the shorelines. If I'm going to risk losing a disc, I sure don't want to lose one because it hit a small branch and dropped in, or got lost in some brush trying to skip to the shore. The shorelines are cleared down to the water level in other areas of the park, but that maintenance is lacking on the course.
The walking path around the park mentioned above, does come into play on several holes and could really slow down a round. In fact, at least 2 holes have some tees using that path to tee from.
With the mostly wide open layout of most holes, you're throwing a lot of the same shots off the tee, not a lot of variety of shots required.

Other Thoughts:

Driving past some of the large estates along Ocean Blvd in Palm Beach and seeing the amount of money in this county, this park is what huge tax revenues can build you. Probably every activity you can imagine in a county park, including a wake board park and inflatible water park. It would be nice if the course was kept up as well as the rest of the park.
The park land used to be a strip mine, so that explains the lack of a lot of trees, but also accounts for some elevation that was used pretty well on several holes, all had fun, downhill tee shots. #3 tees from probably the highest point in the park, to both baskets with OB roads lurking right behind. The other 3 tee from the other high point, near the dog park, #10 and #11 baskets are near the sidewalk and the road, and #12 green is in a jail cell of trees, the most on the course.
#5 is the other most wooded green, the various tees all have a tunnel cut in the trees along the lake, then over an inlet to a green with large, old growth trees and smaller guardians.
#18 is a very good finishing hole, to the long, White basket. The Red is a short, straight ahead shot to the basket in a cluster of trees. But the White basket is a 515'/675' Par 4, curving left to right around a hillside (sloping right to left). The tee shot gives you several options with the shortest, right path, needing to clear a large bush on the corner to provide a look at the basket. I choose the left path, under a low ceiling of branches, my forehand faded right, just before the OB road. Then the second shot has to clear a couple of trees on the high point of the slope, then downhill to the basket. Actually a GREAT finishing hole.
Okeeheelee is such a large park, that it appears another course could be put in along the drive to the existing course. It may need to be a shorter, more beginner friendly course, but the area appears to be available. They could even use one set of baskets for that course, because when you have up to 5 different tees per hole, do you need two different baskets? But, before that upgrade, it would be great to see the maintenance on this course be done better.

Okeeheelee Park Oct 21 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful park. A couple locations with bathrooms and drinking fountains. Nice tee signs. Concrete tees for all pads. Nice hole signs. Upkeep was good.Easy navigation.

Cons:

Lots of pedestrian traffic causing delays.

Other Thoughts:

I can't really write much of a review as I played during a tourney and the division played tees longer than our ability. Intermediate division played the back tees on at least 12 of 18 holes. It was a bunch of lightly wooded drives and short layups with a few challenging water carries. The park is very pretty and I wish i had time to play the middle tees as it looks incredibly fair and enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate to stop and play here if you are in town.

Great Course in Palm Beach 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Big sign at the parking area showing course layout and upcoming local events.
+Disc drop-off box for stray discs found in the park.
+Practice basket right behind the aforementioned layout sign.
+Great tee signage with available lines, distance, and pin placements.
+Tee pads in great shape on the AM/PRO tees.
+Plenty of variation in difficulty, from elevated pin locations to OB and hazards.
+Course layout was logical and circled back to the starting area while giving a scenic tour of the park's back area.

Cons:

-Can be difficult to find the disc golf area for a first-timer to the park (next to the dog park area).
-Park patrons can get in the way of quite a few holes (4, 6, 7, 11, and 12 come to mind). Mind you, this round was during a holiday, so YMMV.
-Rec tees are still on exposed ground, which could be a bigger issue after a storm passes through.
-Hole 14 has a large, deep pond that is deceptively further and larger than I expected at first glance. I lost one of my better distance drivers to the drink (my fault for not playing it safe, I guess).
-Holes 9 and 10 are by the dog park, which could be a distraction for non-dog lovers.
-Some of the early holes are by roads and parking areas, which increases the difficulty and risk of hitting park patrons and parked cars.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I liked this park and will probably make another trip up here to play it along with Commons Park on a day off from work. The course has plenty of difficult but reachable holes for all player types (lefties included) and I enjoyed the scenic views from some of the hillier hole placements.

I would suggest coming out either really early in the morning, later in the afternoon, or during the winter months because the park gets HOT in the South Florida heat. My friend about passed out from heat exhaustion by the time we got to hole #18, and we both had plenty of water prior to coming out.

Okeeheelee Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has concrete tee pads

Has tee signs

Has next tee signs under baskets

Has some benches throughout course

Course flows pretty well

More open than wooded fairways

Some holes have changes in elevations

Good use of the surrounding water

Free Parking

Restrooms at multiple locations

Cons:

Roads and trails are very close to some of the fairways

Very busy park with other parkgoers - didn't see many players on a Sunday afternoon

Many opportunities to lose discs in the water especially with the wind blowing

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice course where I was surprised by the amount of elevation here. There are some rough spots near the water where I'm glad I didn't throw any discs in and I didn't see any hazardous wildlife here. Lots of parkgoers, such as skateboarders, kitefliers, and sunbathers were here but didn't prevent me from playing the hole.

Space to Grip & Rip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 18, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very large park & course with room to let it rip. Mostly open holes with large trees to shape shots around or between. Course has recently been upgraded with new Dynamic Disc Veteran baskets.
Elevation: The most elevation found in the tri county area.
1 & 2 play uphill to blind pin locations. 3 plays downhill in a cross wind. 4 & 5 play across water with 5 being the longer of all water carries here. 9 & 11 play back up another slope with 10 & 12 going back down. 14 is another tough water carry or a choice to lay up and then over.
Signature holes: 5 is a long water carry to a basket under a very large tree. 11 is a long down hill bomb into a stand of pines trees with the potential of a skip off the pine needles to the basket. 2 restrooms along course route. Red, White and Blue tees welcome all skill levels. Cement pads plus signs at the white tees. Recently added signs give distance, hole number, par, define o/b and drop zones. The signs also give distance to clear the over water shots. Arrow on baskets points you to the next tee. No fee to play or enter the park.

Cons:

Always seems to be park users on #6 fairway, an open shot with a very inviting grass field. Popular spot for sitting or soccer. There are a lot of holes by walking paths and there can be waiting for walkers, bikers to pass.

Other Thoughts:

Ignore old reviews that site navigation as a problem. This has been resolved with the addition of the tee pads and signs.

Shared use park with rest room by dog park (tee 10). Shared use park can get busy on weekends & some fairways are popular picnic spots. Plays best weekdays or early weekends. Wind off lake is usually a factor. Bring your heavy stable discs! Want to see a good video of the park? Check out 2014 South Florida Open on YouTube.

Best Course In the Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

COURSE HAS HAD A REDESIGN...NEW REVIEW COMING SHORTLY

Where to start...This course is set in an absolutely gorgeous and well kept Park. There ar bathrooms and water fountains at Hole 1. There are some fairly significant elevation changes which is unheard of in South Florida. I'm told the rest of the course (another 9-18 are tentatively set to be installed) will utilize more of the parks hilly topography. I have yet to play at Okeeheelee when the wind has not been a factor, so expect to use every shot type you have available. This park is extremely large and spread out, even on busy days there will be minimal interaction with other
park goers. The course has a large lake and some canals that come into play on several holes. There are three tee postions for every hole, each providing a different shot type, with increased distance as well.
For the sake of my review, I will be approaching each from the white tee position and am a RHBH player. I have not yet had the opportunity to GPS the distances but will shortly.

Hole 1 is a fairly open fairway with the lake on the right and OB road on the left. The preferred route seems to be a hyzer out
over the lake, with the right wind this should not be too difficult a shot, but to get it close you have to have some guts and
really let in fly over the water. It's a great 1st hole.

Hole 2 is a straight shot with a low ceiling for the first 50ft or so. Your best bet is to lay up a little short as when you start
to approach the basket a canal comes into play both to the right and behind the basket. I hyzer flipped a sidewinder that over shot the basket and dissappeared into a maze of gargantuan lilly pads and strange Floridian reptiles.

Hole 3 is an uphill, dogleg right tunnel shot that opens up for the last 150 ft or so.
I've yet to see a birdie on it (though I've only played here a handful of times with a handful of people) as any shot that is low enough to clear the tunnel will undoubtedly catch the hill leaving a long jump put or upshot. Some of the big arms may be able to play a big turnover over everything, though it would take some superior shot shaping.

Hole 4 is a fun down hill shot with a cluster of palm tress on the right that really shouldn't
come into play. There is an OB road to the right of the basket as well as a few small trees protecting it
but a hyzer over everything is a pretty easy shot here and will get you close.

Hole 5 is a short hole that plays directly along the road (on the left) to a well protected basket. The entire right side of the fairway is open giving ample room for a soft hyzer. The park has asked that we not throw over the road so turnovers or RH flicks are discouraged.

Hole 6 is a straight shot with trees along the right side of the fairway. The last 75 ft or so are littered with small trees making a shot right at the basket tough. The whole left side of the fairway is wide open though.

Hole 7 is a slightly uphill shot with a couple of different ways to approach. There is a tunnel
through the trees heading left to right, uphill. It is probably pretty difficult to get it very close taking this route as once again, the combination of a tunnel and an uphill approach require extreme
accuracy. The left side is fairly open, though there is an OB road which will punish any turnover shots that fall out. There is a drop off behind the basket so if you're going miss your upshot, miss short.

Hole 8 is an ridiculously fun hole extending over the edge of the lake to basket protected by a few small trees and OB on the backside. There is also a cluster of trees on the far shore of the lake which can come into
play if you take too low of a line on your drive. There is Ob on the left which can hurt you if you don't attack the basket (going out over the lake.) You will be driving over a bike path so please be aware.

Hole 9 is the signature peninsula hole with a shot completely over that disc eating lake to a basket surrounded on 3 sides by water. There are trees along the right bank which can make an approach form that side slightly difficult. There are also two large trees protecting the front edge but there is an ample gap if you decide to go right at it. Keep in mind that this hole is often made all the more
treacherous due to that heinous and ever present okeeheelee howl. The wind does not give up.

Cons:

The only cons on this course will probably be rectified over time, the course in its current layout is only two weeks old. There are no tee pads as of now, though this is not as big of a problem in South Florida as I imagine it can be in other areas. Each tee pad is marked but large round painted stones. The number of the hole is painted on the white stone. If these stones were to be moved for some reason, it could become an issue. There are also no signs but the layout is extremely easy to follow. The baskets are old Innova Discatchers, some have one set of chains and some have two. They are in good condition but obviously another set of chains in the baskets that need it would be ideal.

Other Thoughts:

This course has the potential to be the best course in South Florida. It has everything: short techincal holes, long bomber shots, elevation, water, wind and punishing OB. I have played the full layout with temporary baskets and it is absolutely superb. Dan, the designer has obviously poured a ton of time and effort into making this a top notch course.
It is still in its infancy, but even with the existing 9 holes it is probably the best option in the immediate area. If you are in Palm Beach County and have only time for one round, this needs to be your choice. My rating will go to at least 4 when the rest of the baskets are installed.

edit: a tenth basket has been added and the former hole 2 is now hole 1, hole 3 is hole 2 and so on.
