B- = Bit Better Than Average 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2005 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up (from the longs):
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- B (funky shaped holes tempt you to really try to get close to pin and will punish you if you try to get too cute.)
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- B-
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- B (mostly open. Several holes have funky shapes that do not give you a realistic chance to get into putting range....leaving you 40-60' after a good drive or approach that is as good as you can expect.)
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- C- (I am not a big fan of the coastal sandhill feel - scruffy and brown)
5) Bonus amount for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- C (several multi throw holes, but all but one seems to really add much besides length)

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I can add anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A Variety of wooded and some more open shots. Most holes give you some choices. Reconfigured for the better.

Cons:

People in the way on some holes--bad neighborhood--go with friends.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this course--play the short tees if you think it is too difficult. After playing this course more it is starting to grow on me. Try it out. The layout has been changed and it is now more user friendly. A new #18 has been added along with a new #2. Hole #3 new pin placement on the side of the hill is an improvement. #13 Long tee is a killer long tunnel shot--very difficult not to hit a tree and get it down there, not necessarily a bad thing. I am bumping up my rating due to all of the improvements.
Favorite hole: #10
After 16 walk straight down the gravel road between soccer fields and directly into the woods to find #17. (which is near #3 long tee)

it's a course isnt it 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some good holes. One basket up steep wooded hill. A few bomber shots. Clear-water creek in play on one hole. Variety. It has signs and a map is available online.

Cons:

- New layout change means for some confusion, possible missing 2 holes, for newcomers to this course.
- Tee #1 is practically hidden.
- More than a few too many super tight unfair lines.
- Maybe a rough area? Some creepsters walking through the course made me want to keep an eye out, lots of trash.
- Dirt tees layered with slippery needles.

Other Thoughts:

It's playable, and not altogether a bad experience, just not by any means a great course overall.

Difficult and Long 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 11, 2005 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Plenty of chances to boom a shot while still requiring accuracy. It is challenging and requires patience and time. There are definitely par 4 holes here, which is the only course in the Columbia area with more than one. The website says par is 61, and I believe that.

Some of the holes are pretty cool looking (ivy, tree-branch arches). The holes offer a good variety with a lot of straight and long holes as well as having some nice long doglegs. There are holes where a layup on the first shot is better than going for it, making shot selection key.

Cons:

There is a lot of traffic (people, cars) and a lot of trash. It is probably one of the trashiest courses I have played, as well as busy, especially when soccer is in season. People park all over the course.

Tee pads are natural and uneven. Navigation from hole to hole is difficult at times with several long walks. The course does not flow very well. Some holes feel put in just because they needed one more (Hole #7).

Other Thoughts:

I think this course is worth an attempt, but bring your patience because you will need it. I agree with the other reviewer in that you either love or hate this course. I dislike it, though acknowledge a few glimmering jewels in the 18.

I was looking at the website and #17 and #18 have moved and now the layout is confusing. Here is a link: http://www.columbiadiscgolfcl...ption_new.htm

Love it or Hate it 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2006 Played the course:once

Pros:

Perhaps the area's most challenging course, though softened a bit when park construction took out 2 long holes. Back 9 includes some great par 4/5 holes, long enough to boom it but with obstacles and tree islands to navigate around.

Cons:

A number of extremely tight wooded holes. The non-disc-golfing public is frequently in the way, and tends to leave a good bit of trash around the course. Not the prettiest place for a disc golf course, if that matters.

Other Thoughts:

More than any course I know of, people either love this course, or hate it. I confess to being in the latter group.

OCTOBER 2009 UPDATE---Course has been redesigned with several new holes, and most holes renumbered to navigation makes sense again (though I still recommend a map or, better, a guide). The photo and hole info posted on this site are the original layout.
