Another course in the bay

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

All of the reviews below mine are great and I think accurately reflect what is going on here and if you want to just skip mine and read theirs it would be fair, but I will give my own reflections here just for hecks sake.

When I arrived I at Oyster Bay , the parking lot was closed and I had to park on Neptune Drive along with every other park user. Cars were strung down the road on both sides for quite awhile. This added quite a bit to the walk in making it maybe a mile to hole 1 or more. It's not a difficult walk but an extra mile is an extra mile.

I have to admit my first time seeing the course did not wow me in a good way. I came over the hill to see a ton of people just playing out in the wide open. There are literally 36 baskets and 36 teepads strung out in about a 30 acre area of just wide open nothingness. There are some natural shrubs and their are a ton of tree plantings as others have mentioned. But I use the word tree carefully because these are more twigs in the ground, most of them only 2 feet tall with only a handful over 3 feet and the salt air and wind are stunting their growth. There is some slight elevation changes at play as the ground slopes toward the bay.

There are 36 Innova Discatcher color coated blue and gold and 36 teepads color coated blue and gold, providing 4 distinct layouts: blue to blue, gold to gold, blue to gold, and gold to blue, not to mention a hybrid of all. This will definitely keep your game fresh but can greatly add to the confusion of the course.

But it is the wind that really creates any real obstacle here. It is almost omnipresent being on the bay and quite deceptive. It makes a round here far more challenging just trying to adapt to the wind.

Solid signage and 3D printed basket pointers on every basket to the next teepads.

I should mention that the SF Bay is visible from every spot on the course adding to the ambiance.

Cons:

The biggest con here is the land itself as it really is just wide open and rather barren of course they are trying to change that.

The plantings and shrubs are surrounded by fencing to protect them. Most of the foliage provides very little obstacle as it's easy enough to go over the top and are more annoyances at this stage rather than obstacles. The shrubbery that isn't fenced is getting destroyed by traffic. This is going to be a battle to get greenery in here.

It's a really busy course at least on the weekend. You will find your self doing alot of waiting on holes. Also as open as this course is I can't imagine how hot this course gets in the summer time I was lucky enough to play on a nice fall day.

There is no water in play despite the proximity to the bay. In fact this course feels early high desert like.

Everybody I talked to and even the reviews on her are all excited about the future of the course when all the twigs actually become trees. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but trees don't grow here naturally and it will be interesting to see if with the wind and the salt air if these trees make it at all. If the trees do come in this could be a great course.

Other Thoughts:

I would normally lean very heavily to not giving a course with no trees like this more than a 3 but I am giving the nudge up just for the amount and volume of work done here.

I also have to say I don't like multiple baskets on fairways I like my courses a little cleaner. It does become a distraction as to where you are aiming. But when everybody cheers when you ace a basket you don't have to tell them you were aiming for the other one.

Overall this course wasn't really my cup of tea, it might get there in 10 years, and don't get me wrong you can still have alot of fun here and really work on your wind game but for me I'll take my woods golf. This course kind of has a desolate desert feel, but here's hope for the future.

Open Sesame 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 28, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Finally open and worth the wait! The first reviewer played the course 4 times before reviewing, which is good because the wind can really vary here and effect your experience. There's also so many ways to play the course with two pads and two baskets every hole. I've played it now in different winds and layouts, 5 or 6 rounds. If you play mostly shorts it's not bad to play two rounds in a day like I did one visit. Needless to say I like the course 'cause I have kept coming back, but I've got mixed feelings. A lot of details, thought and work has been done that we need more of! This course was a long time coming but it shows that the time and care makes a big difference. Too many courses are rushed to open and once they're open course work and improvements just take too long or just halt.

+ scattered mature trees
+ PUTTING AREA with distance markers in cool undulating bowl, views.
+ Refreshing VIEWS of the San Francisco Bay. Kinda cool to watch the airplanes come in.
+ PYRAMIDS. They can be hokey but the two here are really nice. Professionally installed, the scale fits the land and openness. DETAILS. Hole 17 pyramid with offset tiers and gravel - hole 9 pyramid aligned angles.
+ Color coded directional markers on baskets.
+ multiple PINS and TEES - both blue and yellow tees same level of install/quality - makes it playable for different levels and variety for advanced players
+ Clean, professional TEE SIGN graphics. rich colors. Large hole number at upper left helps a lot
+ great CART course. Brought my Zuca out one round to test it out. Will do it again.
+ Hole 9 blue teepad tucked under oak will be a nice summer shade spot (want more of this feel)
+ Lots of boulders to sit on. Took a ton (many tons) of work to set all these! But benches would be nice too. Can't have too much seating around tees, especially on such an open course.
+ ISLAND/LAKE HOLE. Helps make open landscape more interesting to play! On hole 7 there's a rock ringed island and a nicely (professionally) built drop zone. FUN.

Cons:

- Lots of rocks (boulders) to sit on but benches would be nice...
- few trees in play off the tee
- #3/#12 node... needs benches also #2 long and #11 short
- WIND. If you don't like strong winds having their way with your discs check the forecast before playing.
- Long walk (1/2 mile?) to first tee from parking. Not great for 'quick' rounds. Nice walk/warm-up out of the car if you don't have a schedule and know the course but kinda annoying for first timers. Probably had to be laid out that way though.
- It's just so OPEN. The signage and arrows on baskets make it easy to navigate if you pay attention, but it's not intuitive. It's nice when it's more obvious and you don't always have to check the signs/arrows. Now that I know the layout(s) it flows better but it took a couple plays. With all the baskets and tees kinda 'littered' around it can be distracting and confusing. I think trails could really help with the confusion. The tree plantings will help a ton when/if they grow. They seem placed really well! I just wonder if they will keep up with watering if mother nature doesn't help and how heavy play on the land will effect them. SHOT VARIETY. But at least for now it is open. The little bit of rise and fall (especially 16, the bomber towards the Bay) is fun and interesting (adjusting to wind variations) but on almost every hole you can basically throw whatever shot you want and it doesn't matter that much. Makes more of a great 'field work' course than an actual designed-track. Time and thought making the 2&2 (tees/baskets) layout work for the site is impressive! I'd just personally prefer a design that uses the land a little better by focusing on one position at a time but having multiple positions that get moved.
- Two-baskets. I had never played a course where each hole has two baskets at the same time. This has its pluses and minuses. It's great to have options all the time but there's some course flow problems with it on a busy open course (like this will be often!) especially because there's going to be a lot of first timers coming to check it out. Second I just can't get over the idea of having multiple targets along the same fairway. It's a distraction to me to see (or have in my way) another basket that I'm not going for. I want one clear target that I'm 'hunting for'.
- Tee pads: road base gravel and dust already peppering the rubber pads, use a heavier gravel? And I'm just not a huge fan of the rubber mats. When they're level and dry they're fine but they're so susceptible to wonkiness. Here, the ground squirrel issue is a problem already before all the twisting and pivoting effects.
- #3/#12 node... needs benches also #2 long and #11 short

Other Thoughts:

If this level of thought and work was put into a little bit better site with more interesting elevation and vegetation it would easily be 4 or higher. With only an average effort put into this land, the course wouldn't be worth playing. The views and setting on the Bay really makes it. For now the open setting makes it a very enjoyable place to work on your game! This course will serve a lot of people and really help grow the sport in the Bay Area.

Big thanks to Leonard Muise and all the folks who helped make this course happen!

A Pearl In Waiting 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Warm up basket (we think) up on the hill across from #1 tee
• Restrooms onsite (though not of the modern variety)
• Nice new baskets
• Tees are great (rubber mat variety)
• Signage is also great, though a touch tricky to figure out which basket is in on a particular hole/day
• Multiple layouts (2 tees each and multiple basket positions - 3 per hole, I believe)
• Fairly easy to navigate with handy next tee pointers on each basket (for both short and long positions)
• Views are quite lovely, with lots of walking/biking trails, benches and fields for picnicking

Cons:

• Parking is limited and I wouldn't park too far away from the park entrance. Looks a bit sketchy.
• I'm guessing being right on the bay that the wind is probably a factor out here, though it was quite nice the day we went.

Other Thoughts:

Tips:
• Use the UDisc app for navigation
• Keep your head on a swivel as the fairways can get a bit dense in spots
• Do note the OB areas and islands as they're very much in play on most holes

Random Thoughts:
Oyster Bay is a regional park right on the bay near the south end of Oakland airport, which means you have some lovely bay views to complement your round, with a steady stream of plane landings, of course. The disc course appears to be on a plot of land that a lot of work went into recently. There are a zillion trees planted out here (yup, we counted - 1 zillion on the dot), along with a lot of large rock placements to form 'islands' and 'rivers'. It's also clear that the tees were purpose built and 'bravo' to that crew as they're very well constructed. Overall, I can't say I've seen this level of work in more than maybe 2 other courses in my travels, so again, I tip my hat to to the crew(s) that did all this. It could not have been quick or easy.

As for the course itself, it is largely made up of sub-300' shots with OB usually lurking nearby, or in the case of the islands, right smack in front of you. There are 2 tees on each hole that usually add just a bit more distance to each shot, and occasionally a slightly different shot shape. There are also multiple basket positions, so if the basket is in the back position and you play the long tee, you'll start introducing fuller throws, but generally (outside of the super long #18) you're looking at being more precise versus big-armed. While the course is on the gentle downslope of the neighboring hill, elevation change is fairly mild throughout the course. The most interesting feature, or shall I say future feature, is the aforementioned zillion trees. Yes, you'll probably occasionally get stuck in/behind one, but most of them are small at this stage. What will be very interesting to see is how the difficulty of this course changes as the trees grow. I was pretty surprised at how closely planted they all are (full disclosure: I'm not an arborist). Even if some only get 10-15' feet high, a good chunk of these shots are going to get a lot harder. Should be fun to watch and play over time.

Bottom Line:
A tremendous amount of work and love went into the construction of this course. While it currently skews towards the beginner end, in terms of difficulty, I suspect that will change significantly in a few-ish years. With that said, whether you're a beginner or a pro, a fun time can be had by all while picturesque views abound.

Diamonds from charcoal

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 15, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

To preface, this course was approved over 10 years ago. It took a long time and a lot of planning.
I think it was worth it.

Two baskets, and two tees on every hole. Also a 3rd pin location to make competitions interesting. Allowing many combinations. Rubber tee pads are in good shape. Next tee arrows on some of the baskets. They seem to break easy. The tee signs are nice and seem accurate. The area looks flat, but it isn't. The elevation does come into play. But truthfully, the wind is the trick. Frequently 20mph on summer afternoons. The trees and bushes make controlled landings crucial.
Dogs are allowed off leash on the course. Also the parks district allows open containers. (Dogs and beer? Major plus!)
Practice baskets in the trees by hole 1.
Pit toilets and a water fountain (complete with dog fountain) are on the hike in. The other restroom is a grandè porta pottie between 17 and 18. Trash cans are near hole 1 complete with recycling. Please pack your trash.

Cons:

Hard to bitch about this place.
It's a half mile walk to the course from the homeless camp parking. i was kinda worried about my car, but no issues! I don't consider that a con..they are building a parking lot for the course.
There are oblivious dog walkers ocasionally wandering the course. Please be an ambassador. It hurts nothing.

Other Thoughts:

Bring water as the shade is minimal and the breeze will dry you out. Also sunscreen and a hat.
If you see the park department mowing the course. Stay 300 yards away. (Not feet) Really. Or they will stop mowing. It really matters. People make it hard to get this course mowed, and it really makes all the difference.
They planted 370 or so trees when the course was put in . Some didn't make it but many live. This course is going to become vastly different in the next decade. Come now and appreciate the change.

fun but mostly wide open (for now) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

everything is brand new.

the course is right on the bay but the water doesn't come into play at all. you'd have to tee off backwards or do something real reckless to lose a disc in the bay.

2 teepads and 2 baskets for every hole. great for mixing it up since some of the yellow to yellow holes are quite short.

excellent signs and each basket has directional markers for the next set of teepads

Cons:

most of the terrain is wide open since the trees were freshly planted. it's gonna be a while before this course really takes shape but it's still fun right now.

wind can definitely be an issue at this bayside course. i've played 4 rounds here and it varied from dead calm to 20mph+ gusts. wind usually picks up around noon-2pm around here and it's typically calmer in the mornings.

Other Thoughts:

a little bit of uphill and downhill but mostly flat in general. there are a couple portapotties on the course and also some public park bathrooms on the way to the course.

there are lots of mini-fences protecting the baby trees. they're about 4 ft high so they can definitely affect your throws/trajectories if you land right next to one. def recommend bringing a tomahawk/thumber disc.

it's a bit of a walk from the parking lot to teepad 1. bout 1/2 a mile or so.

big thanks to Leonard Muise and all the folks who helped make this course happen!
