The State Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

If nothing else, I'll give Palmetto Middle credit. They managed to create a decent, mid-length course with not much space to work with.
- The course has a long and short layout. The two layouts share 8 baskets, with #7 offering different holes. This was actually the most fun hole on the long layout, so I'm not sure why this is the one they decided to separate.
- #7 is a short island hole. Miss the grassy island in the parking lot and you're OB. It's only 150 feet, but it's still a tight green to hit. I threw three discs. First one landed safely, about 20 feet long. The next two were closer to the basket, but ended up OB. Great hole.
- #3 and 8, from the long tees, also have you throwing over hard surfaces (parking lot, entrance road). The main road could potentially come into play on the first three holes. Realistically, you'd have to really shank a shot far left. If you're going 60 feet left on a 235-foot hole - #1 - you're in trouble. The school building is closer to the basket on #1 than the road is.
- #4 forces you to throw under or around a large oak tree. Good size obstacle on this layout.
- #6 plays close to the parking lot. If the parking lot is OB, which I assume it is, then you've got a narrowing fairway the closer you are to the basket.
- Artificial turf tee pads. They're easy to spot, making navigation much easier.

Cons:

A lot of people won't like that the parking lot is in play so much. With a lack of other obstacles, the parking lot becomes an artificial OB. But with that, comes more chances of scuffed discs.
- The final two holes were the least appealing on the course. The first hole also, wide open and straight. For some reason, it's more acceptable to have a simple warm-up to your round. Ending your round with basic layouts, however, is a letdown.
- Generally, not a difficult course. That's great for the course's intended audience. Boring for the rest of us.
- No amenities on the course. I was done in 20 minutes, so that's not an issue. It's worth noting.
- You may have to hop a fence, or walk around it, if your disc sails offline on #5 or 6.
- Pretty much every suitable piece of grass is being used for this course, meaning there's not space for additional practice or field work.

Other Thoughts:

There was just enough variety here at Palmetto Middle to make it a nice school course. Holes #3 - 7 are the best part of the course. Layout is a simple little loop, making for an easy round of golf.
- I enjoyed holes #2 and 3. Simple, open holes. Being on a small-town road, you're not inundated with noise from traffic.
- I somehow hit a three-foot, angled gap where the gate was open to the field to the right of #5. It was a much harder shot to make than acing the hole. Better to be lucky (or bad) than good.
- This is a good course for beginners and students. Little chance of a lost disc. Lots of open spaces to throw.
- I was back to I-85 in 10-15 minutes. So, it's easy to bag this course while playing others in the area.
