A bit bleak at Park Creek

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

As part of the Prodigy-spurred movement to put baskets at every public school in Dalton, the Park Creek Elementary layout is one of the more robust offerings compared to the other mini-courses and practice areas at nearby schools.

That said, only avid baggers or parents are likely to throw plastic here.

The first hole is actually marked with a couple small flags in the ground. Afterward, there are no tee indicators, and users will likely have to play from basket to basket.

The design puts three of the longest four holes near the end, including one open hole of almost 200 feet. However, you could easily play this course with two discs.

The course is fairly flat and lost discs are highly unlikely unless you find the rough left of Holes #1 and #2.

The navigation to the next basket is straight forward once you locate the first hole near the northern-most part of the property. The Prodigy baskets are bright yellow and easy to spot.

For novices and children, this might be a course to score one's first ace. Thankfully, I didn't sink any of my "long putts" and have to explain why I have a 60-something-foot ace on my disc golf ledger.

Cons:

First, you are NOT permitted to play here during school hours, so choose an evening or weekend to visit.

Three of the first four holes are extremely short. Basically, they're a putt from the edge of Circle 2.

The course starts at about the furthest point possible from the parking lot, though due to it's uni-directional design, Hole #9 is next to the parking lot.

The baskets aren't numbered.

Three holes require throwing under (or over) a covered walkway, so damage to your disc or the building structure is possible. A couple windows could be endangered by wayward throws on Hole #9.

Hole #6 is just weird in its current location. If there were tee indicators ever installed, undoubtedly, the spot selected wouldn't be next to the Hole #5 basket. From there, it's over 200 feet to the basket and involves throwing over a covered walkway and a portico or trying to dodge multiple poles to go under the coverings while avoiding the parking lot on the left and building on the right.

Other Thoughts:

The Park Creek Elementary layout was set up for its intended audience: kids. With that in mind, the course probably deserves more than a Poor (1.0) rating. However, I doubt I'll be back unless I'm with another bagger who is visiting Dalton.
