Pros:
My three pros:
- Nice lakeside setting alongside Mexico's largest freshwater lake, Lake Chapala. Several holes play alongside the lake to give nice views, but far enough from the shore that the water does not come into play.
- Concrete teepads provided at all holes with hole number (and occasionally distance) painted at the rear edge. The concrete tees make it easier to navigate, but you will still need Udisc course map to navigate many spots.
- Nice mix of open and wooded holes, most holes are pretty reachable in the 300 ft range, with some longer and some shorter in the mix. Hole 2 is fun 250ish tunnel shot through a 30ft wide corridor of trees; hole 7 is the signature hole with OB sidewalk left and low tree ceilings playing to a basket situated right in front of the lake about 280ft away. There's a few bomber holes in the mix as well, but picnickers seem to enjoy those fairways....
Cons:
My three cons:
-Several holes share teepads but play to different baskets, and some holes play from different tees but share a basket. There was actually another group out there on a hot dry may day and we had to yield to each other a couple times. Obviously with shared tees/baskets comes a bit of shared fairways and criss-crossing fairways
- Navigation is tricky without udisc maps, and even with maps it can be a bit confusing where to go in places.
- The course doesnt exactly give the greatest first impression as the first few holes of the course play through a not so nice/ slightly trashy/slightly sketchy area. The first and last hole plays to a depressed basket that is an abandoned fountain maybe? and is surrounded by some abandoned looking concrete structure things. Once you get the lakeside holes there's a typical park course vibe and is quite nice, but there's a walking path and picnickers and kids frolicking and such, so human obstruction navigation may be a factor.
Other Thoughts:
I was pleasantly surprised by this course and had MUCH more fun playing here than the course in Guadalajara (Los Colomos). Lake Chapala is worth visiting and the course gives great access for relaxed, hassle free enjoyment of the views. Getting here can be sketchy as the town is a bit chaotic so it may be worthwhile for international visitors to find someone to accompany them to the course. Getting here / Playing here alone might not be super comfortable for folks coming from the US.
The lake is scenic, the holes are interesting and varied, the town of Chapala is charming - go check it out!
