What a Niner Should Be

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- dual tees
- beautifully maintained new course
- multi use park done the proper way with disc golf isolated
- some great technical challenge; all heavily wooded
- mature trees and a quiet, picturesque setting
- extreme elevation change on holes 1 and 9
- tee signs are serviceable and have maps
- navigation mostly straightforward by following walking path
- virtually no rough to contend with
- baskets are new and in good shape
- course loops nicely back to start

Cons:

- kind of is what it is, but some muddy areas down by ravine
- rubber tees, and only have signs at white tees
- some trip hazards, but these are due to the newness and are spray painted
- some may feel the course is too short
- some permanent next tee signs, particularly in 2nd half of course, would be helpful
- no real amenities; no practice basket, garbage/seating on course - likely are restrooms and other amenities elsewhere in park
- wish the ravine was incorporated on more than just 2 holes

Other Thoughts:

Picnicana Park was a bit of a last minute add on my route home and is very close to I-90. I'm not sure it was on DGCR when I started planning as it is very new, and this shows in the course. A lot of work has clearly been done to remove brush and create decent fairways, but the larger items cut down have resulted in plenty of trip hazards which are spray painted orange. As the course wears in, this should become a non-factor if maintenance is kept up.

Wow, I'm glad I decided to make the stop though. I love a high quality 9 hole course that allows for a quick but challenging and fun round, and Picnicana delivers. The ravine hidden in the woods here is surprisingly deep, and you throw over it for holes 1 and 9 which are awesome shots. I only wish this was incorporated more on other holes; the course is described as moderately hilly but it would be more accurate to say 1 and 9 are VERY hilly and 2-8 are mostly flat.

While there are a lot of mature trees here and a high level of technical challenge, the rough is very forgiving due to the thick tree canopy limiting sunlight. You'll probably want your hiking boots here due to the steep climbs at the start and end of the course, but overall the course is pretty short. I don't mind this, since shot placement is a factor on these wooded holes and gives a good level of challenge, but most holes are below 200 ft and nothing hits 300.

The rubber tees are just ok, and while the tee signs are pretty cool (looks like etched/burned wood), I fear they will wear out very quickly. For now, this course is in great shape and a lot of fun for a quick round. Thankfully, despite being in a multi-use park, it is very isolated from the playgrounds and other park activities so safety is very well done here.

This isn't going to be a destination course, but if you are passing by on I-90 I think it's definitely worth a stop. It's probably one of the top 5-10 niners I've played.
