Gas Man? How Do They Know I Got Gas?

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Piedmont Pines is located at Piedmont Natural Gas's property in Rockingham. Building a course on the property? Maybe that's why my gas bill keeps going up every year!
- This is a simple, yet efficient design. Instead of being on a commercial ground, it was in a park, it would look and feel much better.
- By nine-hole course standards, there are nine straight decent holes here. I'd say none is more than a B quality (#9), and none worse than a C, maybe a C- (#5 or 8).
- Solid variety from hole lengths - 135 to 417 feet from long tees; solid elevation with a couple uphole shots (#2 & 3) and downhill layouts (#7 & 9); and heavily wooded (#1 & 4) to wide open (#6 & 8). Nothing will wow you; but you're also not going to get overwhelmed.
- Each hole has two sets of tees. Large colored stakes in the ground mark the tee pads. Compared to just about any course I've played that don't have tee signs, these colored stakes were the easiest markers I've seen. All the engineers working at PNG, and they produce colored stakes to improve course flow.
- Good course to practice multiple shots. I pulled out driver on five tee pads getting to be more aggressive on #9, while having to be a little more precise on other holes, notably #6.
- Due in part to the colored stakes, and simple, logical flow, course is very easy to navigate. Biggest confusion is figuring out why you see blue, white, blue, white stakes near the tee pad for #2. I realized that's the one flaw of the course as #3's tee plays back into #2's fairway.

Cons:

I think this is a perfectly fine, simple 9-hole design. As stated above, if the backdrop of this course were a park, and not PNG, it would seem like a better course. That said, a couple of small issues.
- The weird design of tees for #2 & 3 being so close together. You play #2, then backtrack partly down the fairway to get to #3's tee. Only an issue if the course is ever busy.
- Tee pads are overrun with weeds. Still relatively level and not an overall issue.
- Now to the biggest issue...the giant fence that comes into play on 5 holes - #2, 3, 6, 8, and 9. I had two discs sail over the fence and barb wire. Not good. Both discs landed within four feet of the fence that I could slide them back with a stick. Very good. On hole #3, it was a cross breeze that knocked my disc off line. Point being, the fence comes into play more than should, especially when these holes require you to pull out driver.
- No amenities - benches, trash cans, rest rooms. Only five minutes back to town, so not a major issue. Plus, you're finishing a round in under 30 minutes so not much of a problem.

Other Thoughts:

Piedmont Pines is solid. Not spectacular. Not bad. But mostly enjoyable.
- Almost every hole is nice enough to throw multiple discs. Throw three shots up the hill on #2 or 3. Try to park a drive on #5, 6, or 8. Make an ace run on #4 or 7.
- It's not a long walk...but because it's such a quick round, the walk from #9 back towards #1 seems longer than it is.
- I didn't see anything about this being a private course, but I did get a couple of looks while playing. I suspect if you're respectful of the property while playing, there shouldn't be issues for players.
- If you can throw a driver straight, you're in great shape hear. It was nice unleashing one of my better tee shots in a while on #6, being hole high and having an easy birdie putt.
- A quality, average nine-hole course. In my book, that's a 1.5 rating. An 18-hole version of this course would be comparable to Bearskin Creek in Monroe, 45 minutes to the west.
