Quick but Excellent Par 3 on a Lake Backdrop

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 15, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Was in the area and after a day of work, I didn't feel like playing the area's long courses so opted for this 5,000 ft course. Happy I did.

It's heavily wooded and while tree trunks play a big role, tree branches don't, and underbrush was mostly light to medium - relegated to the further edges but not free of the stuff. The front and very back of the course was easy walking grass, the middle is rocky in parts.

Tees are a generous concrete rhombus, almost a triangle, wide in the back and narrowing up front.

Signs are pretty good although I was often left wondering exactly how accurate the tree placements on them were. The paths on the map was harder to carve than in reality. Navigation was also pretty easy and I never had to consult my phone except at starting point.

Play was fine, no overly long bombs, and it flowed well. Few star holes, ever fewer I remember afterward but I did enjoy the view of the lake throughout. There was a mix of challenges and I even had to employ my flick roller at least three times when my disc flew off course into brush, which was an extremely common occurrence.

Elevation was mostly subtle, no major uphills iirc and a few gentle downhills, it served mostly as a slight hump obscuring the pins from the tees.

A solid par 3. Those seeking more distance should try the Quaker's Challenge course in the same state park across the lake.

Cons:

Hm, I wouldn't park right up against the trees near hole 1. Just as I left, a huge chunk of the top branches fell unprovoked. There was already piles of tree nearby.

Other than that, there isn't much to complain about the course. Probably not the best course for newbies still finding their throwing legs or for people throwing well over 300' who don't want to work on shorter technical play.

Amenities (bathrooms/water fountain) near the end were closed mid-September.

Other Thoughts:

Course loops back to start overall.

Out of OOOOO discs or XXXXX strikes.

Terrain: OOO - Re. Mix of grassy and rocky pennsylvania forest with a view of lake. Slight elevation in mix.
Execution: OOOo - Very good. I'd be happy to have this as my hometown course. Nothing major was missed and it's very mature at this stage.
Upkeep: OOOO. Excellent. Great tees, good signs, easy navigation, fairways are free of clutter.
Difficulty: OOOo - The amount of trees makes good shots worth something and bring consequences to bad ones.
Fun Factor: OOOo - This was a solid par3 and should be fun for that crowd, which includes me. Cannon arms will be bored and should try the course across the lake.
Crowded: XX. Seemed emptyish. There were few groups on a Thursday afternoon. If it fills up, seems hard to find ways to skip around.
Overall: OOOO - Excellent example of a solid par 3. 3.75 to be exact.

Nice Compact Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is well laid out allowing for a quick round if needed. Enjoyed the challenges of the wooded areas, while the tees and fairways were kept well.

Cons:

Skipping across the road from hole 3 to 4, was unexpected however this is only done once more from hole 17 basket to 18 tee.

Other Thoughts:

Overall really enjoyed the course, much quicker play than Quaker's Challenge, and much less time searching for discs!

Great Course For Beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 24, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Boulder Woods is the perfect course for improving accuracy and perfecting your game. This course consists of mostly short par 3 holes ( all >430 ft.) with well placed trees scattered throughout the fairways. Most holes are tightly surrounded by moderately thick woods on either side to add to the challenge. There are also mandos on holes 6,7,12,16, and a tight double mandatory between two trees on hole 13 which requires some accuracy. The course is fairly level throughout and is not nearly the demanding hike that Pinchot's other course, Quaker's Challenge can be. It has been well maintained with all concrete tees for the am locations and easy-to-read hole paths on wood posts with hooks for hanging bags on every hole. There is a bathroom located near hole 15, but it is not always unlocked. There are also pavilions and hiking trails nearby. Looking for something to eat after the round? Forry's Drive-In is located about 1/4 mile down the road. There is also a league that meets weekly for the more avid player.

Cons:

Holes 1-3 are not well separated from one-another and and hikers walking on paths located nearby holes 7 and 8 can slow pace of play. Rec tees are gravel and are very hard to spot. It is not the most challenging course so experienced players should have no problem shooting par on this course. There is only one trash can located on hole 1, so prepare to carry any unwanted items with you for the rest of the game.

Other Thoughts:

Boulder Woods is an all around fun and easy course to hone in your skills or learn the basics of disc golf. I highly recommend it to anyone starting out!

First Time Playing in PA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great markings on all the holes, nice cement tee pads, fairways were well maintained and scorecards were also available next to the first tee.

Cons:

Parts were a bit overgrown, but landscaping is probably somewhat prohibited given that it is a state park.

Other Thoughts:

Have yet to try the Quaker course on the other side of the park across the lake, but really enjoyed playing this course. I plan on playing it several times in the future.

Not a baby anymore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This course is great (when it's dry). It's come a long way over the last few years and now offers a worthy challenge. All while playing through very dense woods. A note, accuracy is more important than drive strength, so if you throw a short disc but have great control, this can be a wonderful course. A few holes have mandatories to keep things interesting. Well marked with concrete tee pads and Disc Catcher baskets. Bathroom accommodations and water on-site.

Cons:

Hole 5 is a beast and while I love long holes, tree (yes, tree) placement is a huge factor on this hole. There aren't many finished/grassy fairways on this course, so expect rough woods and rocky terrain for footing issues.

*Beware this course is swampy after a heavy rain.*

Other Thoughts:

Pinchot rents discs. I discovered this when I crossed a family of 3 playing with rented discs. They were having fun, but honestly this course isn't for beginners. Still it's always good to see a family trying the sport out. They were kind enough to let me play through after a short chat.

Pinning Pinchot 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 20, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 holes of solid disc golf. Great tee pads, long and wide, and easy to see DIScatchers, most of which are in great shape. Numerous shorter holes with a few longer throws but none of which are not threeable. Some holes have shorter tees as well. Tee signs are nice and well illustrated. Although the course does favor righties a bit, most left-handers shouldn't have a hard time with the layout. Arrows below the basket point you to the next tee, always a plus. Some of the mandos are designed more so for safety issues with the walking paths, but many of them are fair. Bag hooks are provided on nearly every tee post. Fairways are groomed, but don't miss them.

Cons:

The early three holes as well as 18 play in a lower area of the course and usually are very wet much of the year. In January these were frozen, thankfully. The only mandos that were tougher is the double mando on 13. Sure, it's great and makes it tough for the seasoned player, but a noob or a rec may be forced to lay it up and then shoot it through, kinda interesting.

Other Thoughts:

I had a blast out here today and shot well, surprisingly. The course is definitely unique and the mandos add a little more spice to a course that without 'em, might feel kind of repetitive. Off the fairways, some holes you can catch a break and move much closer to the hole, but a few will leave you with nothing more than a pitchout. The Llamas have done a great job with both Boulder and its counterpart, Quaker's Challenge.

Sharpens your accuracy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2007 Played the course:never

Pros:

Some of the best concrete tees i've thrown from. Signs with maps footage. Hole #1 offers free scorecards! Wonderfully challenging course to practice your wooded shots. Tournaments are very smooth and well organized and usually offer a players package ranging from discs to T-shirts.

Cons:

Not the most friendly roller course, they dont call it boulder woods for nothing. No wide open field holes for the big arms to really air one out without any obstacles.

Other Thoughts:

Quaker Challenge across the lake is set to open in the fall of 2007 and from what i've heard, thier club has designed and installed a challenging professional course.

Watch out for that tree! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great mix of holes in deep woods, I love it. With the nicest mando markers I've ever seen.

Cons:

When I played the park was also home to a triathalon people kept running through all the shots I was lucky to not hit anyone.

Other Thoughts:

I heard that a new course was being built "across the lake". It was a small lake, so that must be nearby.
