Another great course away from the masses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- No crowds on the day we ere there
- Good variety all around
- The best baskets I have seen/played on
- Amazing personalized artwork/welding work for every bag
hanger on every hole (worth playing to for this alone)
- Good signs
- Separate cool welded arrows signs on most holes that point
to the next tee
- Great views
- Love the smell of sage and juniper
- Nice t pads for each hole
- Great layout and use of space
- Out of town

Cons:

- Right next to the dump. No bad smells the day I was there
but a bit of loud noise
- Some tee pads are getting holes in them. At this point they
were all usable but on a few you had to use caution. It won't
be too long before a couple become dangerous or unusable
- Discs often landed in Junipers that are impossible to get any
forward throw on (just an added challenge I guess but kind of
frustrating)
- Arrow signs that point to the next tee were often turned the
wrong direction (moved by wind)

Other Thoughts:

It is apparent a lot of work and care went into this course( A+)

Would be great to see maintenance on the worn tee pads as
they are becoming a hazard

The arrows indicating direction need to somehow be made
unmovable (a very small amount of cement in a hole is all it
would take)

Great use of rolling hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of rolling hills. They did a great job using the hills in every variation. They have at least 2 side hills that the best way to get to the basket is throwing an anti over the downhill side. Do it right and have a good chance at birdie. Go to high, and you could end up way down the hill with a tough par save. Has some long open holes for you big arm guys. (Not me) some short with even a really short downhill putter drive. Great pads that are easy to find with the metal custom bag racks. Each hole has an awesome map of the hole that even show the elevation difference for every pin! Very nice baskets. I printed the map, but really didn't need it. I am NOT a desert fan, and I still give this course a solid 4.

Cons:

Not really anything. For me since it's in the desert, it isn't the most beautiful course. But that is personal preference. But I definitely wouldn't play on a warm day. Not much shade to find.

Other Thoughts:

Lake Tahoe has so many top quality courses it's crazy. From Sierra at Truckee, North Tahoe Park, Zepher, Markleeville, Kirkwood to this one. Plus about 4-5 other good courses. If you travel here from out of town, you could stay a few days and get in 2-3 good courses a day. Combine that with some gambling and some great beers. Plan your trip.

Desert Course Deserted 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 25, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great tee signs with lots of information. The tee pads were some kind of red dirt mortar mixture that were very easy to throw from. Good variety of distance, when we played there were 4 or 5 par fours and one par 5. I liked the next tee signs they were welded arrows on rebar poles.

Cons:

Many baskets were so close to the few trees on the course that the putts were hard to make from as close as 10 feet. There were several blind shots that made it easy to lose a disc without a spotter. We had trouble finding several of the baskets. The tee pads varied from ten feet wide and rectangular to four feet wide and hexagonal. No water was available.

Other Thoughts:

I am glad I played this course, although I will probably not play it again, because I live so far away. It is similar to Lizard Peak in Reno. But LP has more trees and more elevation. I shot 7 down with a bogey. If I could have putted a little better it would have been even better. Not much of a challenge if you can throw decent distance. I didn't know the course designer was going to take my review so personally. You mentioned the view, and we talked about that because of Gayle's comment. It's just my opinion, but the views at LP are way better than Pine Nuts. My rating has nothing to do with who designed what course. You did a good job with what you had to work with.

Good now, will be better 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very large tee pads, recently installed, and very well done.
-New baskets (MVP black hole) that I had never seen before but functioned quite well, and had very obvious round number plates on top. If you could see the number, it was likely the pin you were playing.
-Most holes had a "Nex T" sign that pointed to your next tee pad. Metal sign atop rebar, but could be hard to see (very skinny and a small plate).
-Tee signs, when present, were excellent, with elevation profiles, accurate vegetation (e.g., juniper snag would be referenced as a landmark). The person making these really went all out, and they need to be loaded onto the web site when all of them are complete.
-Super clean, no trash anywhere. Scenic views of the valley and surrounding mountains.
-Dozens of jack rabbits and cottontail rabbits, bounding all over the place.
-Did not see another person the whole round, so it felt like a private course.

Cons:

-New course and therefore has no map, which is very much needed.
-New course so the trails were not very well worn in, but it made it more scenic.
-Not all tee signs were installed (1-5 and 7 were in as of July 1, 2018).
-Many blind pins from the tee. For some players that may be a good thing, but if you are just "bagging" the course while traveling, then it makes it harder to play the course.
-Few benches.
-Holes are relatively repetitive, but there is not much nature to work with here. Mostly low scrub "clumps", some grass but not tall, and sporadic junipers and other coniferous trees that are not very tall (<15 ft most of the time).
-The surface of the terrain is loose soil with lots of rounded rocks that make your footing awkward. Lots of shifting, and even some gopher holes/burrows that you punch into on occasion, which is jolting when you do not expect it.
-In several cases, the alternate pin placements were (very) close to one another.

Other Thoughts:

The directions to the course were spot on, just make sure you slow down for the dirt road off to the right (west), which parallels the southern end of the Fairgrounds.

The sign that says Baskets 7-11 PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK is, in my opinion, overly cautious. I found those holes no worse than the other holes.

Hole by hole comments for pin positions on July 1, 2018:
#1: Blind shot. Slight left to right. Walk to left of tee to see pin on right.
#2: Blind shot. You can see a pin on the opposite hillside, but that is basket #12. It is right to left, up the ravine on the south (right) slope of the ravine.
#3: Blind shot. You shoot up a slight rise and pin is on downslope, protected by junipers. Slightly right off the tee, with more open space on fairway to right.
#4: Blind shot. Tee points in sort of the wrong direction, with pins off to left, which is ok if you are RHBH and throw big, floating hyzer shots.
#5: Blind shot. If you walk up the fairway a little bit, the pin is visible with trees in background. Slightly to left.
#6: Pin is just visible behind a large tree-shrub on the opposite slope, about 50 ft from edge of dirt road.
#7: Blind shot. There is a berm in front of the pin, but behind the berm it is level (no cliff). Can approach in either direction, avoiding trees in the middle (which obstruct view of pin). The tee sign is misleading in terms of a cliff. There is a slope to the right (pins B and C) but not dangerous or particularly steep. Not sure if it has changed since the sign was made, but this was very misleading IMO.
#8: Blind shot and pin is very far away and hard to see. There is a barbwire fence right in the driving lane. An opening in the fence is to the right. Drive over the fence and land in a big, level bowl. The pin is near the road-side of the bowl, at the far side. Very long hole. You won't see the pin until you are past the barbwire fence.
#9: Pin is just barely visible on edge of green trees/bushes on the road, which is below the tee. Nice stone stairs and trail leading off the tee to the fairway.
#10: Blind shot, bush/tree obscures view of pin. Slope from right down to left, pin is basically straight off the tee.
#11: Blind shot, but walk up trail to see pin. Uphill, left to right. Flat up above.
#12: Pin barely visible, hexagonal tee pad, very small, but since this is a downhill, short drive you don't need much tee pad.
#13: Blind shot. This is the other really long hole, with slope to the left and a flat area to right. Pin is in trees slightly to left. Very hard to see it until you are almost on top of it. Should be a flag on it so you know where to throw on your second drive.
#14: Pin visible next to big, downed tree trunk. Straight shot.
#15: Pin barely visible, dead ahead. Last of the long shots. Several trees come into play.
#16-18: These are all basically the same kind of shot, about 250 ft, straight or slight left to right, with trees shaping the line off the tee.

a gem in the high desert! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 2, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy course to get to, just 5-7 minutes off of hwy 395. The course has its own space and parking lot with a practice basket on the left and tee pad #1 on the right.
Porta potty and water right next to the first tee. Large custom made tee signs and tee sign frames, custom made bad ass bag holders from a local metalsmith artist at every tee. Custom made next tee arrows pointing to the next tee along with course map makes navigation easy, no long walks from basket to next tee. Unique eco friendly tee pads similar to cement. Brooms at every tee pad. Beautiful custom kiosk built by the same metalsmith artist. Split rail ranch fencing installed for OB markers. Incredible rock work done around several tee pads and baskets, trails and rock stairs. Majority of trees in play have had the lower branches trimmed off. Baskets 6-10 are some of the most unique and fun throws you will ever see on a disc course! Moderate elevation, very unique terrain on holes 6-10, and much more than a "few" trees. Uphill, downhill, flat, left to right sidehill, and right to left sidehill tee shots. Some of the best views you will ever see on a disc course with expansive views of the Eastern Sierra Mountains and Carson Valley! Even if you dont play the views are worth walking thru the course!
Great mix of hole lengths. Several short, technical ace runs and 5 par 4/5's, including a fun downhill bomb on #13. Several greens have moderate elevation or drop offs in the circle with a few death putts. The course stays on contour making the elevation as gradual as possible.
Multiple loop options. Loop options include: 1-3,1-6+ 12, 1-6+12-18, 1-12, or you can start on #4. These loops are great for players short on time, beginners, kids, players out with their wives, etc..
White MVP Portal baskets, very easy to see from the tees.
Large stainless steel basket #'s that can be seen from quite a distance.
Great winter course! This course is playable when all other courses in the area are under snow or mud.

Cons:

Not the best summer course. Heat, wind, not much shade, and extra vegetation make it tough in summer, tee off before 9 to avoid mid day heat and afternoon winds. Plays best from Labor Day to Memorial Day.
no trash cans
Might be an easy course for advanced players

Other Thoughts:

I love the variety of holes, nothing seems too repetitive. Great use of the land and a good flow to the course. I also love that this course has its own space and is not part of a park complex.
I cant thank Karl Moe enough for his incredible effort and dedication to this project!! Karl just flat out gets it done!
Please ignore the intentional, low ball, biased 2.5 star review. Not saying this is the best course on the planet but much better than a 2.5 when you consider most 2.5 rated courses have major flaws or are unfinished. This is a complete course with some very nice extra perks!
