The course plays through a large flat park with scattered mature trees. There are two ponds and a river that can come into play with errant shots on a couple holes, I like seeing some risk like that on a course. Though there aren't really any tightly wooded shots, there are trees in play on every hole so it isn't just a bunch of wide open shots. There are several holes that call for a left or right turning shot but most holes have a variety of lines available.

There are lots of fun ace runs here, and every hole is reachable from the tee making it a fun course to go for deuces and a good course for newer players without much distance. The long tees add some distance and challenge for a little tougher round.

The tee signs on the main tees are good, with hole length and map. Some friendly locals pointed out the bricks set into the ground for the long tees which made for some more variety and some tougher shots. The park was nicely mowed and well kept with no trash or vandalism.

Both the short and long tees are natural, and could easily be muddy and rutted after the rain. Several were not level and didn't provide very good footing. The long tees were difficult to find on several holes, as they are just grass spots with numbered bricks set flush into the ground. Some had survey flags marking them when I played, if those were on every hole it would help a lot.

The navigation was a little funky in spots, none of the fairways crossed but you did have to walk by other tees to get to the next hole at times. The baskets weren't in great shape, they're definitely showing their age and they didn't catch all that well.

The design of this course is just mediocre. There are too many short easy holes that are reachable on lots of different lines so the course doesn't really make you use many different shots. The long tees are a little tougher, but every hole is still easily reachable off the tee. There are some great water hazards that really only came into play on shanked shots, I would have loved to see the water used better to make some cool risk/reward type holes. There were a few places where the course played too close to picnic areas and roads for some safety hazards.

This is an ok course that's worth a quick round if you're in the area, but not worth much of a trip. If you're going to play here, the long tees are more fun, but can be difficult to find. Beginners will find the course very approachable, with reasonable distances, multiple lines, and limited places to lose discs. More experienced players won't find a ton of challenge here, but will enjoy some fun ace runs. This course has a ton of safari potential, including some great over the water shots.

Pioneer Park is an OK recreational course. Nothing really stood out as great, but most things were OK. The land is mostly flat, so elevation is really no issue. There are no real "heavily wooded" shots, but there are no real "wide open" shots either. There are enough trees to keep things interesting. There is a river and a couple of ponds near some holes, but the water does not really come into play unless you badly mess up your shot. Most of the holes are very deuceable as there are really only two or three 300'+ shots. The tee signs are easy to find and have a nice map of the hole on them. It's a nice spot for a casual round.

None of the shots really stood out as anything special. The course really does not force you to use a variety of shots and the distances are all very similar, so it gets repetitive after a few holes.
I'd have to rate the layout as poor. There are several places where a first-time visitor will have to wander around looking for the next hole. The classic example is the tee for # 5. Holes #2-#4 are across a street, and when you finish #4 the tee closest to you is the tee for # 1. There are several visible baskets in both directions and no directional signs, so you really just have to guess which way to go to find the next tee. The tee for # 5 is right there, but it is hidden behind an evergreen tree. A directional sign there would be really nice. There should also be a directional sign along the long walk from #9 to #10. That walk is odd since the first tee you come to is the tee for #12, so a sign pointing you on to # 10 would be a good addition.. The layout on the back nine criss-crosses back and forth. None of the fairways intersect, but it is hard to follow the layout the first time out. Several of the tees are very close to pin placements, so if the course was crowded that could cause some problems.
The tees are rutted dirt holes that fill with water when it rains.
Some of the baskets are Mach I's with the shallow basket attachment and the old added inside chains. Those baskets don't catch well.

This course is in a very under-funded park district, so there are no rest rooms and no parking lot. The park is actually maintained fairly well, especially considering how little money they have to work with. There are a lot of park districts with a lot more money that have worse looking disc golf courses. All-in-all given the limitations of the park itself and the lack of resources that the park district has to devote to the park it's a pretty nice course, just nothing special.

-no amenities, no bathrooms, I didn't see any water fountains, no parking lots, just pull off parking on the side of North St.
-sloppy natural tees-it was raining when I played so some of the tee pads were flooded, and there was no clear edge of the tee pads, I just played either behind or even with the tee post.
-Not much variety, most of the holes were straight ahead and not much in the way of being guarded, there were a lot of trees, but they lined the fairways mostly. There were only a could rhbh annie shots, most of the holes were slight rhbh hyzers.
-I had some minor issues with navigation, the walk from 4-5 was elusive for a bit, but 5's tee is behind the hole 1 tee and for hole ten you have to walk behind the lake on the road, pass 12 and get to 10.

This course was deserted. It was quite a fun little course, but left me itching for more. I kind of wish they had put the pins nearer the water and utilized guard trees a bit more. But all in all, I had fun and would go back if I were in the area again. Also I didn't notice any problems with goose poo, but I didn't see many fowl on the pond.
