Excellent & Unique 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course has a very one-of-a-kind feel
-Lots of Elevation
-Challenging but still gettable, type of course you really need to throw a few times before you'll know what disc is best (couple tunnel shots into fields with tough to read breezes)
-Really nice setting, very beautiful spot overall
-I like the boxes and pin placements a lot
-every whole feels unique
-easy to find course
-two practice baskets to throw between
-plenty of trash cans and benches

Cons:

-Some of the signs are misleading in terms of pin placements so we had to scope out pin location carefully, I think we threw to the 15 basket on hole 10 because of this and had to start over
-layout brings you back on top of some other holes, necessary to play quickly I guess and maximize the space

Other Thoughts:

Really interesting tee pads, I liked them a lot. I can't wait to play this course again, what a gem.

Well Rounded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-All holes have fair routes to the basket, albeit tight and challenging
-Diversity in lines and angles for each hole
-Great baskets and teepads
-Elevation comes into play on many holes
-2 practice baskets for back and forth short approaches
-Near soccer fields, for practicing upshots and drives
-Very remote and quiet, don't have to worry about hitting people with discs or being bothered while playing
-Beautiful scenery

Cons:

-Slippery when wet, between the elevation and the dirt becoming slick, it can be dangerous to navigate
-Many drives go out of sight and it can be easy to lose a disc if you aren't careful

Other Thoughts:

I love this course, it is close to home and a great course to play if you are looking for a challenge. It's no walk in the park by any means. There are a few pretty open holes, but most everything is pretty tight and demanding. I would like to see perhaps 1 more openish hole to give a little breathing room, but it really isn't necessary, as it stands it's a great course!

Diggin' the Pipeline 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pipeline DGC is amazing. Challenging to say the least. Takes all kinds of throws to successfully traverse the fairways that are frequently in dense woods and also changing elevation, sometimes drastically. Maybe the best course in the state. The equipment is all good. Tees are concrete, and baskets are still like new. The layout is easy to follow, and the signs are pretty good. There are a few benches and trash cans along the way.

The first hole eases in with a mando as the fairway moves from the open into the edge of the hilly woods. Hole two is slightly uphill and from the woods into an open area. The third hole is where it starts getting good. Open fairway with woods lining either side down a fairly steep hill about 500'. A par 4, but a 2 isn't out of the question if you punch a good drive out there. I did nail it, but couldn't get the 40 foot putt to fall. Hole 4 is a shorty through narrow gaps in the trees, with the fairway dropping and then climbing to a pin above the level of the tee. Managed a birdie there as well, but thats where my good fortune ended. Bogey on 5, a nice hole with plenty of trees as well. 6 really zinged me, a downhill right to left, with a tough line through the trees. I lost a disc there (a sidewinder, transparent white with a green stamp), and three putted to top it off. 7 and 8 dealt me bogeys after I continued to struggle to avoid trees. 9 and 10 were also lengthy and wooded, but I managed to get pars. Hole 11 is another cool look from the tee, again downhill a considerable distance, in the same open line that hole 3 is placed in. This time the basket is set to the right, at the bottom of the hill in front of a good sized creek in a fairly deep ravine. There is a large tree directly in front of the pin, and brushy clusters of smaller trees on either side. 12 is flat, along the edge of the ravine, with a few mature trees on the fairway. 13 returns to the wooded hill sides, but is fairly short. 14 is a bit longer, but still par 3. 15 is another short hole with trees, slightly uphill. Was thinking birdie, but wound up with bogey. No gimmes. The last three holes are very memorable, all par 4 with serious elevation and trees. 16 has some airspace to work with but a right turn downhill, and then back to the left and back up again. 17 is an elevated teepad that drops off immediately and steep to a flatter area with a lot more trees. It is difficult to throw the flat line drive through the tree tops and get the distance required. 18 is woodsy and rolling hills out of the box, but turns right and climbs a steep hill to the pin. I was licking my wounds as I tallied my score. 13 over, 72. Wish I could get a few dozen more rounds here and a more respectable score.

Cons:

Not beginner friendly, and probably pretty muddy and a bit treacherous after rain. Other than the lost disc, I have no regrets about this one.

Other Thoughts:

What an amazing course. Love the elevation changes. The fairways twist and turn all directions through scenic but challenging woods. There are a couple of average holes, several very good holes, and a few great ones. Spartanburg has multiple course of high quality, but this is my favorite for sure. Possibly my favorite in all of South Carolina. Definitely top 3. Kicked my butt and left me wanting to do it again. Get your gear and check it out. The last three holes are as tough a finish that I have seen in a long time.

Cons:

none

Other Thoughts:

This course has everything. Short holes though the woods, long holes down hill, and lots of elevation change, and water on a couple holes. Easy to navigate and fun to play. if you love disc gold then you need to play here. it was completely different than every other course I've played in SC (Charleston area) and I will be back next time in heading down on vacation. I highly recommend this course to all.

Wow 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Gravel tees! I like these so much more than concrete tees; they're easier to rotate on while still providing excellent grip, and are easier on the body. These tees are definitely done right
- Two practice baskets.
- Brand new Discatchers.
- Excellent woods holes. Tight gaps, elevation change, but easy to recover from.
- There are some absolutely beautiful holes; holes 4, 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18 immediately spring to mind.
- Legitimate par 4's; some holes will require a placement shot to begin with.
- Benches at most holes.
- Next tee arrows on the baskets; they make navigation so much easier.
- Blind tee shots. on several holes. I put this as a bonus because they can be fun, and the land seems to be solely used for disc golf so there's little chance to hurt someone on a blind drive.
- On most holes, it's possible to recover from a bad tee shot or unlucky kick.
- Good, descriptive tee signs.
- Arrows pointing you to the next tee on longer walks between holes.
- Love the elevated pin on hole 11; this is what I would consider to be the signature hole on the course, with the elevated teepad and beautiful putting green, plus the elevated pin. However, hole 18 may be the signature hole as well, with the huge final approach up a nearly vertical hill.

Cons:

- It's still rough in spots, since the course is so new.
- The mandos aren't marked on the tee signs; I replayed hole 1 because I didn't see the right mando arrow until I walked up to the opening.
- Some of the walks between tees are a hike; the next tee arrows and navigation arrows are great, but hopefully the city maintains the arrows. Otherwise, navigation for a first timer will be kind of tricky.
- Hole 12 plays along a cliff down to the river, so if a disc goes over, it's gone. I'm going to miss that Claymore.
- Some of the woods holes have really tight gaps (specifically hole 10). They're fun, but can be really frustrating as well.
- A few holes get kind of repetitive. They're still fun to play, but repetition is repetition.

Other Thoughts:

Pipeline DGC, playing along and around a pair of Natural Gas Pipelines behind soccer fields, is the newest course in South Carolina's Upstate, and probably my new favorite course in the Upstate. It has a very different feel from every other Upstate course that I can't quite put my finger on; I've heard comparisons to RL Smith in Charlotte, and while I've never played RL Smith, I've watched coverage of the 21 Hole Salute by McFlySoHigh, and the Pipeline does seem to have the same feel.

The mix of open holes to wooded holes is nice, and the open holes aren't boring. Hole 4 is a really long, bombing hole, and hole 11, as I noted above, feels like the signature hole. Hole 16 is also a great par 4 playing across both Pipeline areas. The use of elevation is incredible, with many elevated teepads and huge shots up hills (hole 16 and 18 come to mind on the second point immediately).

However, some features feel repetitive; there are several straight down the hill shots, for example. Also, some of the woods holes have incredibly tight gaps (5, 6, and 10 spring to mind immediately) that, while fair, take away some of the fun of the course, to me at least.

Overall though, I think the difficulty and beauty of this course outweigh the rough around the edges and occasional repetitiveness to make this the best course in the Upstate. With more play, this course should break in nicely to truly be the best the Upstate has to offer.

Gem of the Upstate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very challenging
-Great variety of shots.
- Spectacular views and love the grassy fairways
-Great use of the terrain.
- Nice Practice area
-Good Parking

Cons:

- Not a fan of the tee pads (but did not have any trouble out of them when played)
- Some limbs do need to be trimmed or cut totally out of the way.

Other Thoughts:

I had heard tons of people talking about how great this course was but until I finally laid my eyes on it did I grasp that concept. I have only played a few courses and most all of the ones in the upstate and this course by far is my favorite.I played horrible my first round there so I am going back today to try and redeem myself LOL. The Spartanburg County Rec department is doing a great job. Tyger River was a great Course and this one was even better I can not wait until Holston Creek is done. I think The upstate is becoming a destination that is a must for disc golfers.

Ride the Pipeline

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 18, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Pipeline is an elite-level course. It offers plenty of challenge along with many elite and fun hole layouts. Put it all together, and this course is a definite 'must play' in my book.
- I have played more than 150 courses in the state. I rated it the second best course in the state, only behind Langley Pond.
- Pipeline is a solid all-around course. It combines everything one could be looking for in a course. The course starts with a solid risk/reward layout on hole #1, and ends with one of the most interesting, creative and nerve racking layouts I've seen with #18. With the aspect of the tremendous uphill aspect involved with the approach shot, Pipeline offers one of the best closing holes I've seen anywhere.
- Tremendous use of the terrain. There's an abundance of uphill and downhill holes. The closing three holes play this way: #16 is down and up; #17 is a downhill hole with a nerve-racking teeshot; #18 is an uphill shot that requires a strategically placed tee shot if you want to make a run for the basket in two shots. There's an excellent mix of tight and/or multi-shot wooded layouts to more open, be aggressive holes. Throw in some epic scenery - #11 is set to be the hole everyone talks about - along with grassy fairways in the woods- credit Little Mulberry's inspiration on the designers - and it will just add to the overall enjoyment.
- There are tremendously fair, but challenging, holes throughout the course. There's a high risk/reward factor here. With heavily wooded rough, an aggressive shot that misses the fairway could turn from a birdie run to a scramble for bogey or double bogey. In my one round here, I had my share of birdies/birdie putts while also seeing double bogeys. Even on a hole like #3, which is one of the few open fairways, by being overly aggressive and ending in the woods, it took me two shots to get back into the fairway. Be prepared for a wide-ranging scorecard when playing here.
- This course offers one of the best closing three-hole stretches of any course I've ever played. Doing a quick search of my disc-golf travels, I can only think of two other courses that have a closing stretch as solid as this: W.R. Jackson and Nevin. Here's a quick rundown of the closing stretch: #16 starts out in an open area, throwing downhill to an opening in the woods. Once you clear the woods (and it could take several strokes), you're in another opening, throwing uphill to a basket that's slightly back into another stretch of woods. Add to that there's a slight ravine protecting the basket, and this is a great, multi-shot hole.
- #17 is long and straight. Oh yeah, and the tee shot is a straight down 30-foot drop tee shot. So even by throwing a flat throw, your shot is way too high, and will either be knocked down by a branch or it will end up fading out into the rough. So you've got to throw downhill and keep it in the fairway for a mid-range approach shot.
- #18 is one of the best closing holes I've played anywhere. Love the strategy involved. It's a wooded hole, slight dogleg right with a slight mound halfway down the fairway. From there, the fairway curves further right to a raised basket back up another hill. Add in the fact you could see discs rolling back down the hill towards you and the bad-luck factor also comes into play here. These three holes could all see 3s on them, but could also see a 6 or 7 on them if you're off your game. A couple shot lead in a tourney might not be safe coming into this stretch. As great as the stretch of holes are, none is the best hole on the course. Or possibly even the second best.
- There's great flow to the course, clearly showing the course developers took time and effort to create a solid course throughout. There are two elite stretches of holes - #10 - 12 (listed below) and #16 - 18 (listed above). In between those stretches there's a three hole stretch where you can catch your breath. Holes #13 - 15 are all birdie-able. I had birdie putts on all three holes, making 2s on #14 & 15. It's nice having a chance to catch your breath while also undoing damage from earlier in the round, or doing some preemptive damage control for the closing three holes.

Cons:

Course is new and still being broken in. As such, some new-course issues will be issues for this first season.
- The biggest of these issues are simple, but noticeable things such as the course is too muddy in parts (because grass hadn't been planted yet); piles of branches right off the fairway; need for better signage and more benches.
- Course can wear you down physically and/or mentally. You'll be feeling all the walking up and down hills if you're not fit. And even if you are, good chance you'll be looking for a place to catch your breath at some point. Almost every hole requires well-placed tee shots, which leads to a lot of grinding and scrambling throughout a round. It also means you have to take advantage of the easier holes or you'll feel like you're throwing away even more strokes.
- A couple holes might border on being too difficult/unfair, especially if you compare it to its par. I played with a group of locals, including the designers, and there was feeling that a couple holes on the front 9 could easily be either a par 3 or par 4. The thought was to split the difference and make the two holes a combined par 7.
- Lost disc factor is pretty high. Between being a heavily wooded course and all the elevation changes, there are holes where a disc could easily sail away. Add to that, holes #11 & 12 play near Fairforest Creek. Discs that end up in there might be considered lost or it could take a lot of creativity to find them. All of that while trying to avoid snakes. Oh yeah, the snakes love the grassy areas down there next to the water.

Other Thoughts:

Pipeline immediately became one of my favorite courses, and was reconfirmed with my next visit. In my book, this is the second best course in the Upstate, barely edged out by Grand Central. Let me play each of them another couple times, and I might switch that order.
- #11 is a thing of beauty. It's an open, downhill tee shot, looking straight at the creek. The basket is off to the right and allows players to throw over the trees or through the cleared out openings. A great tee shot will allow you a birdie run at the raised basket. Very funny hole. Throw in the challenging layout on #10, which could also be argued as the course's best/most difficult hole, and the challenge on #12, and this three hole stretch could be considered almost as good as #16 - 18.
- Pipeline is a much better version of R.L. Smith in Charlotte. And I don't think it's even that close. So, for anyone who raves about Smith (pretty much the entire Charlotte DG community), you really need to check out Pipeline. In many regards, Pipeline has many elements and similarities to two of the IDGC courses: Steady Ed and Jim Warner. So, it's not quite as good as the IDGC courses, but it is better than R.L. Smith.
- I was amazed at the amount of elevation the course had - much more than anything else in the region.
- Pipeline is an absolute must play for anyone in the region - Charlotte, Atlanta, Asheville, Columbia, etc. After finally playing it a second time in January '21, I'm even more convinced this is one of South Carolina's best courses.

Pros:

Challenging, Scenic, Good flow from hole to hole,
Excellent tee pads, Good variety of holes/shots, Grass fairways on most wooded holes

Cons:

May have wet areas after rain, Difficult to see some baskets from tee/fairway on a few holes, Somewhat hilly.

Other Thoughts:

Me and my playing partner got a chance to play here before it's official opening in mid May 2015. Can already tell that this will be one of my usual playing spots. Course is layed out nicely. Combines two of my favorite things in a course - length and woods. Has some of the longest wooded holes in the area that will really test your game. Bring your straightest flying disc, you'll need it! A great variety of tee shots from grip it and rip it to long gliding finesse shots. Although wooded, wayward tee shots won't hurt you that bad as the woods are naturally somewhat open and should allow you some sort of an approach shot. The last 3 holes should provide some exciting finishes with 2 or 3 stroke swings easily possible. Overall a great course that I see getting better once it gets "broken in" A+
