Short course but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

In terms of church courses in the area, this is on the top end. A fun variety of holes on a mostly open course. Theres also some tight holes as well that are a bit crammed. Good tees and baskets.

Cons:

Theres alot of tees that kinda confuse the course if you dont have a map which you get online. Some of the early holes are annoying as the hill can kill you with rolls. Some of the holes over the parking lot arent amazing but they're not awful.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course. Pretty crowded on a summer evening but didnt really interfere with our round. I would reccomend.

Peaceful, neighborhood course on a summit 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's wonderful that this church allows the public to play this course. They maintain the property very well. The course is mostly open, so if your drive is not the best, it's largely okay. Downhiller no. 1 with its kiss-of-death putting is a good opener. Followed by the hyzer uphiller no. 2 in the same field. Hole 7 is a crestline makeable par for beginners (5 is too) with its putting circle ringed with rocks or logs (I forget which now). Hole 8 starts out in the upper field and descends slightly into the woods. No. 11 is a nice tunnel for midrange throwing. No, 13 is super long and should be a par 4, but as-is, it's a great opportunity to start airing out drives and approaches again. I threw a perfect Anhyzer approach (junky, short but safe drive into the foot trail) to the basket of 14. It and 15 have interesting crescent-shaped and sloping fairways.

Cons:

Holes across pavement are less fun (holes 3, 4, 5, 6) but one can probably make up strokes lost on the uphill narrow no. 3. Holes 9 and 10 are worthless junk IMHO. No. 12 also is nothing to write home about. If those 3 holes went away, the course would be down to 12 holes, which is not a bad thing. Perhaps neighboring holes 8 and 11 could be expanded or lengthened.

Other Thoughts:

In addition to respecting the church, players also need to be mindful of the residents right on the edge of the course in single-family houses and apartments. Everyone is using this course as something of a park. I encountered two folks walking their dogs. We all are being allowed to play on private property, and I think that is a blessing.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 6, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Nice 15 hole course, with a good variety of holes close to the city on church grounds. It's nice they put a course in here. The property is nice and undulating. There's a good mix of open and wooded holes.
-Multiple tee pads on most holes.
-One of my favorite holes is #8, a long anhyzer or forehand drive through the field, then a technical downhill approach through the woods. I also like #11. Depending on the basket location, it's a spike hyzer shot or a dead-straight shot through the woods.
-Parking is very ample. I estimate ~ 400 spots.
-Stays pretty dry during the winter months, since it's on the top of a hill. But, this makes it windy.

Cons:

-Many holes are over or near large expanses of concrete. #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 14, and 15 all present a chance to throw it into the parking lot (OB) while #s 9, 10, and 11 have the possibility of throwing into the road (also OB)
-The course could be better if some of the Home Depot-size parking lot were removed. The lot isn't even full on Church Sundays.

Other Thoughts:

-Overall it's a decent course, nothing special, but fine. I play it frequently and enjoy it.
-It's difficult to find. You have to to watch for the Bible Church sign on Vermont Ave and drive through an apartment complex and around the left side of the church, past #3, #4, #14, and #15 before getting to the 1st hole on the right side of the church.

Aptly named - good for a quick game 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

* Decent tees (some concrete, some rubber), DISCatcher baskets, some signage. Some alternate tees.

* Ample free parking, free to play, friendly locals.

* Nice variety of longer drives and short technical shots.

* Some very challenging holes even on a short course. These will keep you guessing and recalculating your shots. This really adds to the rating for me, as a lot of short community courses lack challenging shots. I have seen very, very good players seriously challenged at this course.

Cons:

* A map is definitely needed for this course - layout can be confusing for getting from one hole to the next.

* Going from #6 to #7 requires crossing the fairway of #13 - be careful!

* Asphalt hazards - #3, 4, 5, and 6 all require throwing over asphalt, and #1, 14, and 15 have asphalt hazards to the right hand side. Bring old discs you don't care about.

* No restrooms or water available, few benches.

* Alternate tees can be hard to find.

* Entrance can be hard to find, which is from the north through an apartment complex. Then you drive all the way around the church and park on the west side of it.

* Closed most of Sunday due to church services, and too many cars parked on the asphalt holes.

* Some people say it can get crowded, but I've never had an issue myself.

Other Thoughts:

* Good course for: locals wanting to fit in a quick round, and players looking for something a little different

* Bad course for: people with brand new discs, and people who haven't played some of the other courses in the area (Pier Park, Milo McIver, etc.)

* King for a day: I'd rework this course as 9-hole course with clearly marked, concrete alternate tees that are significantly different from the main tees. I'd remove #4 and #5 entirely and rework the layout so you don't have to walk across the fairway of #13.

Well kept fairways. DISCatcher baskets. Concrete tees. Variety of wooded and open holes. Some elevation changes.

Cons:

A few holes had lots of brambles. Way too much OB.

Other Thoughts:

It's just kind of another disc golf course. Nothing really outstanding or horrible.

- Quick play when not crowded
- excellent baskets
-solid tee pads
- A challenge for what it is
-great mix of long and short
-OB rewards shot placement
- Private property
- Awesome club that does great by the course and community
-Beginner friendly

Cons:

-Crowded
-only room for 15...maybe 18...maybe
-
-some problematic elements
-

Other Thoughts:

The added 3 holes really add a lot to the course. OB makes it a challenge every time. Some easily birdied holes and a few really rough ones. Solid overall course. Play an event here for a real treat. Was my home course for 2 years.

Ups and Downs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 17, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is obviously a course that quite a bit of TLC and local pride goes into, the church grounds are very well kept and it also seems to be in a constant state of improvement.

-Tee Pads, from the new launching pad at hole 13 the pads out here are great, multiple pads on almost every hole offer both beginner and more advanced looks at most holes.

-Parking, thanks to the church side lot you should never be left looking for a space out here.

-Friendly local players, thre ALWAYS seems to be a group of people hanging out here, and they have never been anything but super friendly to me.

-League and events, probably the best run weekly league I have ever seen happens out here, along with pdga and ace race events.

-Holes 7-12 for me are the most fun/entertaining out here, shorter, more technical holes that reward placement and punish chucking as hard as you can with no plan.

Cons:

-Plastic Wear, with the amount of holes that happen over parking lots this place can beat the hell out of your discs quick!

-First time navigation, the holes have changed places and numbers a few times, if you dont already know where you are going there are probably a few spots that will leave you a little lost. There are also wrong hole numbers on a few signs that dont tend to help the course newbie.

-Crossing hole hazards, the worst spot being 6/13, you have to keep your head on a swivel while putting at 6, never know when some big bomber on 13 has let loose and maybe not seen you.

-Random casual people wandering through the course, seems to happen at least once a round that some random casual wanders into a fairway and decides to hang out or really take their time getting out of the way.

Other Thoughts:

A fun course that is great for a quick round or some upshot practice. While not my favorite in the area I still find myself coming to play here often because of the fun environment and its easy access.

Gotta work with what you got 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The holes in the latter part of the course that go through a wooded area are a bit challenging and a great deal of fun.

Cons:

The holes that shoot over the parking lot are... dumb.

Other Thoughts:

It's nice that the powers that be put up a disc golf course where they were able to, but sometimes more is not better. They worked with what they had and ended up with a real dichotomy. Half the course is lame, the other half is really quite fun.

Easily accessible to all of greater Portland
Plays as its billed - all 15 holes in the span of a "lunchtime"
Mix of distance and technical shots
grounds well maintained
While there is a bunch of concrete, the OB areas make shots more interesting
Dual Tees on most holes

Cons:

Not the most beautiful course in the pacific northwest
Course closed saturday evenings and sunday mornings due to services at the church. (this is reasonable but still a con)

Other Thoughts:

I think this is an underrated course.
Layout improved
Other holes aren't that hard to find.

Thank God, or at least the Church 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

~There are a wide variety of holes on this course of 12, with decent elevation changes, open fields for strength (#10B is 598'), and wooded holes for precision.
~Dual tees on all but #11, where B was closed due to discs landing in the neighbors garden, and cement and sign of #5B were removed, but is still played by many.
~Decent but small signage at each tee.
~Its hard to find a course of this quality in the middle of a metro area, especially ones which do not have networks of running paths and the subsequent pedestrians and picnickers.
~Personally, the pavement OB zones prevent holes such as #11 and #12 from being mundane shots.
~Grass has been kept especially low this summer!
~Blackberry bushes (first ripe mid summer) throughout the course, and the remnants of a pear orchard (ripe early to mid autumn) between the basket of #5 and tee of #6. Yum!
~Dog friendly, and a portapotty at #1.

Cons:

~Can be confusing the first time, but the uploaded map is current.
~Some of the tees are starting to break down.
~No water on-site, and benches may be nice, but its rarely overcrowded.

CAUTION AREAS:
~Immediately left of the #1 fairway is a field of tall grass - just avoid ending up there or you'll be looking forever.
~Discs inevitably roll down to the street on #7 and #8, whether you hit metal or a tree 30' in front of you. These holes are also unfriendly to forehand shots.
~Be wary of the blackberry bushes on #9. You'll probably come out with a disc, but it won't be the one you threw.

Other Thoughts:

~Overall, I think this course is underrated. Its appreciated by much of PDX, and I have never been completely alone on the course, whether its at 9am or 11pm.
~Be careful to not park next to the #12 basket.
~I have dreams of the unused field next to #1 being acquired and expanding the course to a full 18 holes.

Nothing spectacular 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Lots of variation in hole length. There are two ~180', 2 >500', and the rest are 200-300'.
- Elevation changes make the course more difficult, but not too difficult.
- Hole 4 features a throw, from the long tee, over ~250' of OB.
- The course requires a variety of big arm shots and finesse shots.

Cons:

- The baskets are super awkward. They are really tall for some unknown reason.
- A few of the long tees are surrounded by trees so it's hard for people the use big hyzer shots.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun course, but I would only recommend to people that are intermediate or above. The short tees are good for beginners, but the long holes can be daunting.

Good, not great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course accommodating for all skill levels.
Multiple tee pads for each hole.
Mix of open area and tighter wooded holes.
Quick to play through.

Cons:

Layout not that interesting overall.
Big arms won't be airing it out much.
Homemade baskets occasionally spit a disc out.
Needs additional trash bins.

Other Thoughts:

This being the closest course to where I live, I practice here quite a bit. Holes 3, 8 & 9 offer a bit more technical challenge than the rest. Holes 5 & 10 test out your arm a bit (for the average arm). All in all a fun course for a quick play through. Can get quite busy on a nice afternoon. Also not the easiest to find if you were looking for it without the detailed directions. Many other courses are better, but this one serves the are well enough.
