Solid, Short, Thorny

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A simple course lacking in trees that primarily uses thorny rough to dictate gameplay - and is yet rather enjoyable.

-Rec-Friendly: The distances and lack of trees make this one ideal for newer players. Beginners probably don't want to fish discs out of the scraggly rough, but those with a little more experience can go for birdies and play some risk/reward holes. Good ace-hunting location as well.

-Solo: The location is a bit off the beaten path, and accordingly I barely saw anyone during my round. This isn't solitude in the sense I normally use the word (just me and nature, not even roads around), but you might be the only player on the course and only have a few cars for company in the sizable parking lot. I played three quick rounds without interruption.

-Views: Nothing spectacular, but some low-key mountain vistas. Combined with the above, this atones somewhat for the sins of flat barrenness.

-Gentle Wind: A cooling wind throughout my round which introduced some shaping challenges but nothing frustrating.

-Navigation/Time Play: An intuitive flow that can be played very quickly. Just make sure to continue straight after (2) instead of turning back to (9).

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Despite having nine mostly open shots, this course is remarkably enjoyable if a bit easy. The first two use mild elevation and roads on both sides to make the birdie more challenging. From there, five in a row play along the same line of rough. There's a risk/reward element to these holes where trying to park the hole could put you in two-foot tall weeds with poor footing for your birdie. They're all short, leading into the final two holes which are the most open but also two of the three longest, including one 350' drive. Hitting trees isn't likely, but you'll need to play with a smart touch to give yourself the most easy birdies.

Cons:

-Lack of Obstacles: Only one tree is a major obstacle on this course. Every single hole is open to whatever shape you want as long as you can land precisely. If you enjoy the subtleties of flight paths, I don't recommend Wellfield.

-Sunshine: Very little shade to be found. On a hot, sunny day, you would need to be careful - though your round might not be long enough to matter.

-Rough: The primary gameplay obstacle can also be unpleasant. The rough varies from tall weeds to thick, prickly bushes. I spent about 10 minutes searching for one disc on the fringes.

-Road: A distinct hazard on about half the course. The noise is also the biggest black mark on the natural environment.

-Challenge: I think any Red or better player can go under par here. It's a birdie race where you're unlikely to have any particularly memorably challenging shots.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed Wellfield. A nice walk in the park, it was a welcome change of pace from other busy San Diego courses that gave me a chance to birdie a lot while still having some pressure to choose and execute my shots. That said, the course is not challenging or particularly distinctive. It's Passable, but at the upper end of that threshold.

-Amenities: Mach V baskets, tee boxes with dirt inside, wooden tee posts with number and distance.
