Rampart Range 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Ample parking right next to practice basket and hole one. Baskets are in great shape, tee signs with pin placement are adaquate and the next tee signs help a lot with navigation. Course design takes advantage of elevation changes and shrub oak on many of the holes.

Cons:

Unfortunately many of the holes are in the open with minimal tree coverage on the course. Generally the holes are a straight throw and not a lot of shaping of shots required. The first few holes are promising with tree coverage but opens up from there. Hit, dry and dusty in the the summer months. Those newer to the game may appreciate the straight lines but for a more experienced player, more shot shaping is needed.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a solid course that makes use of what it can with the terrain. Bring lots of water in the summer as the sun will cook you.

Quick Course with a Lovely View. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Scenery is smashing. Playing a round with Pike's Peak in the background is as cool as it gets. Worth it for this alone.-Excellent tee pads with baskets in good condition.-Wind socks on a pair of hard to find holes.-Decent signage keeps you on track.-Overall frustration free, fun course to cruise through.

Cons:

-Low shot variety required. Whatever your default drive/up shot is, you can use it on all 18 holes. Only a con of you want to be challenged creatively. This is a pro for beginners.-Brush can be prickly. Try and stay out of the roughs! Not terrible, but it's Colorado, so it shouldn't be surprising.-Could see it being quite busy with non DG folks during good weather days.

Other Thoughts:

Took a pair of friends out for their first time disc golfing. This was a great place for it, as there are only a few very obvious areas/obstacles to avoid. This allowed them to work on developing a consistent drive & up shots over the course of the round, and limited frustration. For experienced players, this is a good course to breeze through when you've got a little spare time, or tune up your power drive; but don't expect a real challenge. I think there's definitely a place for this course in a typical course rotation for more care free rounds or rounds with newbies.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- good condition Discatcher baskets
- concrete tee pads
- good quality tee signs
- "next tee" signs all over the course
- good variety of shot types to challenge most players
- good variety of distances ranging from 225 feet to over 400 feet
- the course almost starts and finishes in the exact same spot

Cons:

- lots of steep cliffs and hillsides where someone could get hurt trying to retrieve a disc. It's also just very difficult for an in shape person to retrieve.
- a very long walk between holes 10 and 11 with no real good signage to point you in the right direction except for one about halfway there which is around 500 feet from the previous basket
- one tee pads is just dirt
- at least a couple of tee signs are missing

Other Thoughts:

A quality course for the property. It's just a very rugged piece of land that definitely wouldn't suit all abilities and ages.

Roll With It Baby 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Fun! A really nice roll to it without being too steep
-Views. Full on Panarama west to Pikes Peak.
-Easy Challenge. Ams can par, Pros can bird.
-Mostly safe: Some walking paths but not over-run.
-Great touch shots....wore out my D-Roc LOL.
-Easy parking next to Practice Basket/ Hole 1.
-Near freeway for road-trippers. Quick rounds too.
-Most tee and directional signage works.

Cons:

-Neither that easy for recs or challenging for pros.
-A few boring holes, but not laughably.
-The two long walks (but see note about parking).
-Only 1 of eventual 3 basket placements in for now.
-Can be pretty breeze, but hey, it was springtime.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed this little 'Park by the School up in the Hills with a View' type of course. I was pleasantly surprised at how few times I needed to wait for people walking the paths. And there were never any 'civilians' just lounging ON the course either.

The consistent roll to the land up above Academy Blvd combined well with moderate trees and ravine features to provide a variety of shots and terrain. Throw in the Killer views of the Rockies and this is a nice place to be.

Getting There: The course directions worked, though your GPS might save you time getting off I-25 earlier from the South. Look for the park entrance sign and then take the left fork to the back. The Hole 1 tee and practice basket hide a few feet over the edge but still right next to the lot.

Navigation tips: YES, there is a long walk from 10 to 11 and 14 to 15. However, the park entry road splits in half and if you just stay right, you can play 11 to 14 and re-park to play the rest of the holes. If the course were crowded, this might be 'jumping' other players, but I played twice on two nice days and it was not a problem at all. ALSO, if you do walk the whole course from 1 to 18, you need to REMEMBER to walk the long path from 10 to 11. There was no signage at the 10 basket to point the way.

Most of the holes have basic tee signs which indicate an intention to add a B and C position, (which would immediately make this course a 3.5+). Most of the baskets have useful little wooden 'Next Tee' signs. I only remember hole 18 having a very poor dirt tee area. Not bad for a still developing course.

The 43.3 SSE for this course is about right: A 1000 rated player would indeed like to get over half birdies. A more typical 900 rated advanced player should be under par and an 800 rated intermediate should get plenty of pars and a nice challenge.

Overall, I would only give this course a 3.25 for now. But if they put in the B and C positions and continue upgrades, this could be almost a 4 some day and Rampart is a great stop for anyone passing thru on I-25. Check it out.

Nice variety with beautiful mountain views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 4, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A nice variety of holes, most with elevation changes
Very low conflict with pedestrian traffic
Beautiful views of Pikes Peak and the Rampart Range

Cons:

No trash can until hole 10 (please pack your trash)
In the summer, scrub oaks, yucca, and tall grass provide opportunities to lose discs

Other Thoughts:

The baskets, in general, are in the open. There are no trees providing a "ceiling" for approach shots. That said, the scrub oak provides interesting obstacles -- mostly low-level, although holes 1 and 18 feature towering scrub oaks. And there are enough natural obstacles that can get you in trouble (e.g., #8 one can get stuck in the tree grove)

2.92?! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great signs and easy flow. Great use of elevation. Technical at points with some big bombers, too. Fun course. Will return.

Cons:

The walkouts from 10-11 and 14-15 were on the comically long side of reasonable. And that's pretty much it.

Other Thoughts:

Fun. Long downhill shot on 3 was sweet. 5 is a bomb... much longer than 291' or whatever the sign said.

Actually pretty good once you get used to it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Lots of variety for how short the holes are

well maintained

Hard to lose a disc

Great for beginners just starting to learn more technical shots.

Cons:

Some holes are very hard to fine the tees or pins for.

Your first time there you might find yourself walking up to a small cliff instead of to the next tee box.

The flora is quite sharp in some places.

No great driving opportunities.

Other Thoughts:

I can't believe how solid of a course this was once I knew where all the placements were. It's not super technical, but for a beginner it would provide a ton of challenge, and for the more experienced players it is at least a nice course with great mountain views.

Great views and many birdie opportunities 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Stunning views of Pikes Peak. Lots of birdie opportunities. Hole 10, you gotta check it out! Great concrete tee pads and unique blue baskets. Fun layout with good terrain.

Cons:

Long walk between hole 10 to 11 and then back after 14 to 15. Great "Next tee this way" signs, but wimpy tee box signs. A bit hard to find Hole 1 if the parking lot is full of bmx and park people.

Other Thoughts:

This course has matured from what the earlier negative review say. Very cool course and not crowded like Cottonwood. Separated from the population once you drop out of the park area.

Great potential, but still needs work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Challenging holes that aren't impossible
- Great terrain/obstacles
- Nice mountain views
- Little pedestrian interference

Cons:

- Terrible layout if you follow the actual progression of holes
- Tons of cactus
- Poor signage
- Poor trail system to certain baskets

Other Thoughts:

This course has a lot of potential but definitely bring a map. No permanent signage or real launch pads exist yet.

Unfortunately me and my friends did not bring a map and had no idea where the beginning was. The very easy to see and logical starting location/parking area (wood fenced parking lot) is NOT the begining. We spent a very long time looking for hole #1. Once we found it, we did okay going from hole to hole, but it wasn't perfect. The holes are fun and there are a lot of nice natural obstacles and elevation changes.

There still isn't a great trail system from each basket/launch pad to the next. Definitely will need to bring pants/closed shoes. Cactus seems to be in high abundance as well. There is one basket that requires you to cross a pretty large ravine. It wasn't impossible by any means but wasn't ideal.

The biggest problem: the course is MASSIVE. I think it would have been better to make a few shorter holes and keep it all on the south side of the BMX track. As it stands, the course is split with 3 or 4 holes on the North side of the park, no where near the rest of the course.

Great course for its age 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Level change= Very few holes are a level elevation shot. Almost every one has an uphill or downhill in it. You really have to push your uphill shots and make sure they don't land on edge for a roll.

-Use of natural obstacles= Trees, bushes, and hills are everywhere here. They use them really well to create a fun course.

- Privacy= When I saw it was next to a park, I was worried I'd be dealing with picnic people and dog walkers. But this is secluded from the park and is really just a disc golf park.

- Signage= It's laminated paper with footage written on it, but the hole is clear and it's accurate. What more do you want?

Cons:

-Age= Nothing wrong here, but the pros of an older course is that things are broken in a little more. It's hard finding the exact next tee sometimes, as paths aren't worn in yet. It will get there, just not there yet.

-CACTUS= Co Springs has a lot of cactus at their courses, but this one has a lot. I'm still finding quills on my discs a couple days later.

Other Thoughts:

This course will host some amazing tournaments. The view of the mountains is as spectacular as any course I've ever played on. Would recommend to anyone.

New course with issues but unbelievable potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

*High fun-factor. Excellent use of the available terrain, making use of both elevation and natural flora as obstacles

*Features a wide variety of shots: every combination of long and short left and right turns will be needed. Bring a wide selection of discs and expect to need all of them (over- and under-stable, glidey and ballistic, and don't skimp on the midranges). The majority of holes were in my tweener distance, where I had to decide between driving with a midrange or a fairway, adding an extra layer of challenge. Stronger or weaker arms may not experience this the same way.

*The background scenery is gorgeous, including dramatic, panoramic views of Pikes Peak.

Cons:

*As of today (4-20-2016) navigation is EXTREMELY CONFUSING, as there is no signage whatsoever. Tees are "marked" with a little 2-inch square flag posted at ground level. The course layout is not intuitive, and the paths aren't old enough to have been beaten down enough to be easy to follow. I assume this is going to change, because it's simply unacceptable as-is.

I would not have been able ro find the first tee if I didn't get to follow a group just ahead of me, and I was still unable to find the tee for 18, though picking my own fun safari tee spot was no issue.
*Worse, the map included in the files section on this site is misleading, in both the direction between tees/baskets, and in relative diatances. Throwing at the wrong basket was a constant issue, and I ended up replaying 3 or 4 holes after the map pointed me to the wrong basket.

*While I assume the signage problem to be addressed, I am less confident about seeing holes 11-14 fixed. They are a long diatance from the bulk of the course, by themselves in almost a different park. This could be forgiven, except they are also the most bland, boring holes here. They're all just wide open with no interesting obstacles or elevation differences to provide a challenge. There is no obvious reason why they would be designed this way. It's as if the course designers lost all inspiration after 14 holes, and tacked these 4 on as an afterthought, to make it to 18. Honestly, the course would be stronger with an honest 14 than it is now. I recommend just skipping from 10 to 15, the others are not worth wasting your time on.

While the main section is packed rather tight, it seems to me there is still room for 4 more holes without the random expedition to the north.

*Two words: scrub oak. The area is littered with knots of thick underbrush that's at times impassable. That said, I never had any trouble locating and retrieving my discs, but it's an issue to keep in mind.

*Someone STOLE MY FLEECE JACKET! The tee for 7 is next to the basket for 16, and after shedding it I left it in a tree by 16 to pick up later. By the time I returned, it was missing! Granted it was the cheap one I leave in my car for emergencies, and I wouldn't have taken the chance if it were more important to me, but still, this sort of thing shouldn't be an issue. Keep in mind you are next to a high school, so expect to find a more diverse crowd than the typical chill golfer types playing this course.

Other Thoughts:

It was hard to come up with a rating. It is a new course that's still improving, so do I rate it as it is, or how I imagine it will be? I compromised: it is a 3, but as improvements are added, I expect it to be a 4.

If the main two issues I raised in the "cons" section are addressed, this will be an extremely fun course. It's capable of being awesome enough to at least relieve some of the crowd pressure on Cottonwood, if it doesn't end up overshadowing Cottonwood as the top destination for golfers in the north end of Colorado Springs.

And of personal note, I believe I have the distinction of being the first player to ace hole 8 (on 4/20/2016, via a hyzer finishing with a beautiful skip right into the chains)! Perhaps I'm the first to ace any hole on the course! If anyone beat me to either claim please let me know, because until and unless I'm corrected, I plan on boasting about it at every possible opportunity!
