Red Devil? Or Red Smurf?

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 18, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Liberty High School offers yet another great addition to the upstate. The terrain that the property has to offer is spectacular! There's over a hundred feet of elevation change from the high to low part of the land and you often have some shot shaping requirements where elevation has some sort of influence on how or what you'll throw off the tee. The terrain on this property is incredible!

-Dark red disc catcher baskets. Nice tee signs and nice carpet tees too. There's a practice basket right beside the first holes' tee box.

-There are next tee arrows on the baskets. A few moderate walks in between holes, but not to the point where you second guess yourself on where to go.

-Great elevation changes on the front nine. #2 is a very neat more open 238' par three that plays down a terraced ridge. Very cool touch shot with serious risk in going long on a backhand. If #18 at Richmond and #8 at Hobbs Farm had a baby, you'd get this hole. #3 is the signature hole. Tee off on a ridge adjacent to the fence and a huge elevation drop (over 50') into the woods. Very tough accuracy shot that you'll want to throw all your putters on. #4 goes straight back uphill. Shortest hole on the course but doesn't play as that with the pin being pretty high up above the tee (35') and the hill being as steep as it is. Almost felt like throwing up a rock climbing wall!

-Intermediate level course. Even is probably around 880-885 rated. It's enjoyable for all levels. It's very shreddable with different shot shaping requirements. It was very windy when I played, so my score of -5 felt pretty solid. Plenty of straight holes and some left and right turns. Different shot shaping requirements that are straightforward (#8, #9, #12, #13), a few sharp turns (#1, #11, & #17) and several shots where elevation influences your decision making.

-Variety in challenge. Several shorter straight holes. #13 is probably the easiest being very open and straight, despite being a little longer than most of the par threes. #8 and #9 are both uphill wooded holes that are dead straight and under 250'. Then you see holes that live up to the name "Red Devil". #10 is a mean hole. 370' long, up 24' in elevation with thick woods to the right side and the OB road on the left side on top of the hillside that this hole plays on. Takes about 440' of power to reach this one.

#17 is an intimidating ace run. This is what I'd call the Devil's Bootleg. This is a miniature dogleg in the woods. The first gap is about 35' ahead of the tee pad and you'll have to turn right when the fairway breaks right. Not much room for error here. Any mistiming and you'll have to pay. #18 is a difficult gradual left to right side breaking uphill. The 230' distance is deceptive. It's not as intimidating as #17 and it is more forgiving, but birdies on the last two will leave you smiling on the walk back to the parking lot.

Cons:

-I wish that there were a few more holes in the woods. A couple of the open holes (#12 and #13) mainly were pretty bland. #14 is a wide-open par four without much to it. Sure, it's the best chance to really air one out but it wasn't interesting. The front nine is significantly shorter but it has better holes with more elevation and distinctiveness to them.

-The walk back to the parking lot is pretty long. The walk back to the parking lot is longer than any hole transition. Makes you wonder if there's room or availability for a couple more holes around the ballfield.

-This is just a heads up: There were a lot of leaves on #1's approach when I played. Discs could easily be overlooked and become lost on this one. Possibly a few others too.

Other Thoughts:

-Red Devil has a similar skill level to Dolly Cooper. Mostly shorter par threes with a few being considerably hard. I enjoy Red Devil a lot more though. The holes are more distinctive and have some sort of thinking process to them without having to rely on several drop off greens to compensate for blandness.

-The property is huge. There's room for expansion. Hopefully some long tees and alt pins can come into play for a least a few holes. There's a walk across an open trail to #5. There could be a long pad placed somewhere in the open. Knowing Todd, he'll probably have some great ideas for the future.

-One of the better easier courses that I've played. There's a lot of fun to be had at Liberty. Grand Central Station is just a few miles away, which is one of the best in SC. Swing by at Liberty before or after your round at Grand Central and you'll see that the Red Devil has some excellent holes as well.
