Well-Kept Mountainside Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ 18 Plus Holes: This Lutheran Church hosts a mountainside course with the Yellow Course being the most popular design. There is an optional 9 holes you can add on to make a challenging 27 hole layout. You can also play the Blue Course at the same location if you want to take on Charleston's most challenging layout.

+ Signs & Tee Pads: All tees are concrete or block and give players plenty of room for run-ups. Signage provides accurate distances and help map out each hole.

+ Course Maintenance: Caretaker Steve Koepsel does an immaculate job taking care of this course. He enlists the help of locals to ensure the property is in great shape for play so you'll be bound to have the course in great condition.

+ Variation in Design: There are a nice mix of open shots and wooded holes here. You'll find plenty of birdie opportunities but an errant shot can make you scramble to save par. The main design feature of this course is elevation. Angle control and accuracy near the pin will be a must for scoring well at Redeemer.

+ Pro Shop: Disc Golf Sports Center is home to the best-stocked shop in the region. Everything you'll need to play a round of golf is in the shop and it specializes in Innova products. Aside from thousands of discs, accessories, and apparel you can also purchase cold drinks (water and Gatorade). A lost & found is located within the pro shop.

+ Club Events: Locals run fun and welcoming events including tag matches, doubles, and PDGA sanctioned tournaments. Tuesday doubles are a favorite and showcase all the courses in the Kanawha Valley. Redeemer hosts one of West Virginia's biggest events in the Kanawha Valley Regional which offers a fantastic players pack paired with fun and challenging courses.

+ Location: Redeemer Park is minutes away from downtown Charleston - West Virginia's capital city. There are plenty of options for lodging, shopping, food, drink, entertainment, etc.

+ Proximity to Other Courses: Redeemer is a short drive away from several other quality courses in the area for the course-bagging type. Within minutes you can drive to Coonskin Park, Saint Albans City Park, Dunbar City Park, Wine Cellar Park, and Little Creek Park. Approximately 30 minutes away you have the option to play Valley Park or Cedar Lakes.

Cons:

- Navigation: This property has several overlapping layouts that could be confusing for first-time players. Be sure to grab a map from the pro shop before getting started. Look for yellow markers on posts and yellow baskets off the tee. Reference a map to ensure you're throwing to the correct pins.

- The Redeemer Roll: This phenomenon is real and you may have a quality shot roll hundreds of feet away from the pin. It can be frustrating but remember you always have the option of taking a stroke and playing from your previous lie.

- Safety: If this course is crowded there are several places where an errant shot could go into other fairways or tee boxes. Be courteous and never throw if you could potentially hit other players. Be cautious in areas where there are blind shots or overlapping fairways.

- Amenities: Unless the church & pro shop are open there is not access to water or restrooms. Aside from the dumpster in the parking lot there are no trash cans. Please pack out what you pack in.

Other Thoughts:

Redeemer is one of the most well-manicured courses you'll find in the area. It's a unique experience especially if you can catch an opening at the pro shop. To check on hours call Steve Koepsel at (304) 546.8398. You're likely to find a disc or two you'll want to take home.

Please be courteous of church-goers. It is not recommended to play this course before noon on Sundays.

Elevation is the main feature here. Be prepared for hiking up and down hills. I would recommend lightening up your backpack and leaving the cart at home. Bring a snack and plenty of water (especially if you play the Blue Course or the optional 27-hole layout). Sometimes the out-of-towners struggle here because of the landscape.

The Redeemed 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

27 DisCatcher baskets with multiple constructed tees and layouts. Excellent and interesting design for the available land which is basically a giant mountain side slope that is mostly open on the OG 18 layout and mostly wooded on the newer 9 holes 19-27. The OG 18 layout is two loops of 9 back to the parking lot.

The stairs and walkways are well done to help traverse the slopes and muddy areas. Some interesting constructed greens. Well maintained with little underbrush. Sweet pro shop!

Cons:

Given the course is mostly one big open slope, the layout is a bit cramped and can lead to interference from other fairways. The course can be confusing to figure out your first time and has some overlapping layouts. I'd be hesitate to play if it was crowded.

Some of the tees were a little scary/short/elevated. The few alternate rubber paver tees were a bit slippery. Roll-a-ways will also likely happen.

The course can be muddy/soggy in places. Can be difficult to traverse for the young and weak. Holes 19-27 are a loop after hole 15 and before hole 16 and far away from the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Overall Redeemer is a very interesting course - well designed, maintained, built, and packs in a lot of surprising variety. The tees are a bit weird with metal roofing material and either grip tape or shingle material that provides excellent traction even when wet. Many of the tees are raised platforms from the slope and may be a little short/small for some people although I thought they were functionally sound.

The OG18 layout mostly plays though the open and across the slope with a couple downhill shots and up it majorly in a couple occasions. Hole 3 and 14 were my favorites. You could safari some epic holes here. The new holes 19-27 was my favorite loop as they play through the woods.

Steve has done a lot of work clearing the underbrush and building structures and running the pro shop and is a great guy to talk to. They mail lost discs back to owners for free. I highly recommend stopping in just for the pro shop alone, they carry just about every manufacturer, and bags, and baskets. The course is pretty cool too!

Fun Mountain Course - Awesome Shop too! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Bag Rests for each hole
- good workout (basically playing along a mountain ridge - lots of elevation change)
- Good placement of the baskets. They are often on very steep slopes, making you second guess running at a basket (or else it could roll down the mountain!)

Cons:

Although I played by myself, I can see the front 9 getting crowded if a lot of people are playing. Because this course is on the side of a mountain, a shot that fades too fast (or hits a tree) could end up rolling all the way down to the bottom of the course, causing some time/headache.

Other Thoughts:

I stopped to play this course on my road trip from NC to OH. I'm glad I stopped here. I only played 18 holes, but had some good fun. Nicely maintained grass. I ended up loosing two discs on the course. But the best part of the course is that there is a nicely run shop at the course. The gentleman that was running it was really nice and helped me pick out a new disc. He also has shipped 1 of the 2 discs I lost for FREE. Good course with good people. Worth playing.

cool course for being just one big hill 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

good elevation changes
free to play
27 holes
good use of space
pro shop on premise
some risk reward shots

Cons:

Couldn't find hole 1 so I started at hole 9
wet and steep hills make walking interesting

Other Thoughts:

The course was well done for basically being one big hill. lots of elevation change with mostly shorter holes. had to walk up and down a very steep hill after my drive skipped right off a tree which made my beginning less than ideal. I didn't play 19-27 which makes me want to go back next time I am driving through the state. I recommend this course.

Good Experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Not too crowded on a weekend except during tournaments from what I can tell.
- Varied shots needed
- plenty of uphill and downhill
- Good workout of walking
- Nice disc shop

Cons:

- muddy in spots
- A few tee platforms need to be repaired but Steve is tracking

Other Thoughts:

Steve takes care of the place, pretty well. He invited myself to play doubles with him and another couple. He and I had a few things in common, in that we were both prior military. Good experience.

Hidden Gem, Cool Experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Redeemer Park offers a unique experience, located on top of a hill on church property. The course isn't on a huge piece of land, but maximizes the land's potential having 18 holes that traverse up and down huge hills and a set of 9 holes that play in the woods. Not knowing much about the course ahead of time, I was very surprised at how well the course was taken care of by designer Steve Koepsel and a committed club.

It is worth especially noting the amount of effort that has been put into making this course the best it can be. There is a tremendous pro shop on site that seriously rivals the Dynamic Discs store in KC in size and variety of discs. There has been a tremendous amount of clearing to make the holes fairer in the woods and great work has been done to prevent erosion. There are even nets on a few holes to prevent horrific roll-aways. Tees are different than the norm, but they are made out of metal panels - usually on elevated platforms - and have velcro on them for traction. Pins are sometimes elevated as well and have some very cool positions like hole 3's basket on the rim of a ravine and a steep drop off behind it, as well as 5's elevated basket set on turf. I can't say enough about the aesthetics and little things that have gone into designing this course.

The big variable of this course is the ever-present elevation changes. There are huge uphill and downhill shots, as well as constant rolling hills to contend with. With 27 holes, none felt repetitive and you will use a lot of discs in your bag to throw a lot of different shots. There is a great mix of open holes that utilize the elevation and tight holes in the woods. Placement is stressed over distance with tight lines and challenging touch shots on the sloping hills. Power shots are still emphasized though on the steep uphill holes.

This is a beautiful, secluded setting with some great views.

Cons:

There could be some confusion with multiple baskets often in view. With some of the front 9 cramped together, navigation can be a little confusing. I advise playing with locals for your first time.

Since the front 9 is a little tight, discs could easily land in the wrong fairways.

The majority of holes are under 300 feet, so this isn't the best course for players who simply want to throw long shots.

A lot of the front 18 are located on the bottom of a hill, which can get muddy.

The rough is very thick at times and nasty roll-aways can easily happen.

Other Thoughts:

I pulled into the course right as Steve and two club players were gathering to play a round and joined them for a round of doubles. They were very gracious hosts and I really enjoyed playing with them and learning the history of this course. Steve went out of his way to get me a mini and welcomed me back to play in one of the many tournaments that he runs throughout the year. I thought I was just playing an average course in the middle of the state since I hadn't heard much about it, but this course truly offers a unique experience.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First and foremost are the locals. Steve does a great job of keeping the course in great shape and is constantly looking to improve an already good course. There are 27 holes here to enjoy and lots of elevation. There is a lot of variety. There are plenty of ace chances, longer accurate throws, and elevated technical shots. First 18 holes consist of 2 loops while the third 9 is a bit of a hike away from the start. Course has sufficient signage with easy transitions between holes. Multiple tee pads per hole. There is also a top notch shop on sight.

Cons:

There are not a lot of cons to speak of. Some of the front 9 tends to be a little soggy as they are on the lower parts of the property. While most tee pads are nice there are several which drop off at the end which can make a drive scary. While not a major con if you are looking for a course to rip long drives this is not it. A round could easily be played with only a putter and mid range.

Other Thoughts:

This is easily the best course in the state capitol area. The course is associated with a really nice and involved club. I travel a lot and I make sure I play redeemer everytime I'm in the area. I highly recommend playing here.

Finally 18 holes in KV 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Gets the heart rate up on the hills, benches and swing are a nice touch, technical on most holes, the uphill throws turn a short hole into a much longer one

Cons:

Still a hole or 2 that could use some weed removal for beginners

Other Thoughts:

Have played 3 times and the 2 fawns have been there each time, they seem almost tame and are fun to watch.

Still New 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 1, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Brand new Innova baskets.
-Good use of space.
-Rather hilly (in my opinion, that's a pro).
-Good mix of open, slightly wooded, and moderately wooded.
-Short and long tees (on all but top 9 holes as of 5/6/14).

Cons:

-While the grip tape on the teepads definitely gives more traction, most of them only have the grip tape covering a 30"/36" wide part of the teepad. So if your runup goes awry, you could still slip and bust yourself.

Other Thoughts:

Finally, an 18 (now 27) hole course in Charleston! I've played a few rounds with the builders. They're super nice people. It really is a fun course, especially now that they put some traction on the teepads. Not only did they put grip tape on the teepads, but they're also working on a set of pro tees. They're continually adding more, and should have pro tees on the whole course soon. These really improve the course, given some of the short tees are very short. Great course, definitely check it out.
