Pros:

Redwood Park is a small community park in Hudson, NC. While I was there I noticed multiple ball fields, a picnic area, small playground, and a pool. The course features 9 holes with DISCatcher baskets, nice tee signs, and natural tees. The layout of the course was fun and seemed to be balanced well enough to where Beginners would have a blast learning the game here, but Intermediate, and Advanced players would still enjoy themselves.

The course requires a decent variety of shots from players in order for them to score well here. It also has a nice blend of touchy placement shots from the tee (Holes 2, 4, 8, & 9) and longer drives requiring a fairway driver to reach your intended landing zone. Hole 5 is a unique design, with a turnover or forehead needed from the tee to reach a landing zone, before approaching up onto an elevated spot of land right behind the baseball field. Holes 1, 6, & 7 all allow players to really pull on their fairway drivers to try to get a full flight out of their discs. This blend of styles provided an exciting round.

The tee signs on this course were super helpful. Every tee sign had a picture of the whole course, allowing you to really determine where you needed to throw, which baskets weren't your targets, and where you would need to walk to find your next tee. They are also large and easy to spot, with the added touch of providing a nickname for every hole.

Cons:

The natural tees are showing some major erosion. It might be worth the parks department finding a way to address this soon. While concrete is obviously nice, even filling in the pitted out tees and placing small cuts of astro turf on top would be nice to see.

The course has a few crossing fairways. Hole 3 plays around a blind corner in the direction of Hole 8, while Hole 6 tees off directly across Hole 5's fairway, which is already a blind shot. This could cause potential issues on busier days.

I definitely noticed possible interactions with other aspects of the course, such as Holes 5 & 6 brushing up against one of the baseball fields, Holes 3 & 7 throwing across a walking path, and Hole 9 being placed where an errant drive could interact with the nearby picnic shelter, playground, or parking lot.

There are also quite a few spots with disc loss potential. The hill on the left hand side of Hole 7 is one that I learned about firsthand. It is very steep and full of thick brush. It feels very risky to look for a disc on the side of that hill, as I learned when searching for my second drive on that hole. Ended up walking away because the steepness, and everything being wet from recent rain made me very nervous. Other areas in the trees are pretty thick as well, but they either didn't look quite as bad or I just didn't have to contend with them.

As fun as the course is, not all the holes are winners. Hole 8 was pretty tame and generic compared to the rest of the course. The other short holes at least had obstacles to contend with.

Other Thoughts:

Redwood Park was a pleasant surprise, and was honestly one of the more fun 9 hole courses that I have played. For now I am giving it a 2.0 rating. If the course didn't have crossing fairways and/or had permanent tees I think the course could score higher from me. As it stands, it is a great course for locals and I would love it if this course was closer to me for me to play after work. If you're driving down 321 it is well worth popping off the road for a quick round.
