This is not Daytona Intl Speedway - Beginners welcome here!

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good Chainstar baskets.
Small but adequate concrete tee pads, level to the ground. Not much of a runup needed on most holes.
Tee signs are fine, shows the basket location, and intended path of the hole.
Several different types of shots needed, going left, right and straight, on short and longer holes.
Great short course for beginners or families.

Cons:

Can get a little muddy in places, especially the Front 9, since it is mostly wooded and shady, some areas probably don't get much daylight.
As with most parks, there are several walking paths around the course, they do come close to several of the holes, especially 7, 8, 16 and 18. I've played here several times and have only had a few short waits.

Other Thoughts:

Reed Canal is a nice little park, with a dog park and playground at one end, and a nice pond at the other end. The course is on a perfectly flat piece of land in the middle of the park, plenty of parking near the first tee.
After the mostly open first hole, the rest of the Front 9 range from heavily wooded, to just slightly wooded. #8 and #9 finish a little more open, but still require tight left to right turning shots. #4 and #5 are both straight, but extremely tight, requiring a precise drive, or serious scrambling.
The Back 9 range from very lightly wooded to wide open, short ace runs. #10 - #13 cross the same open field of the park, with only a few trees for shot shaping. Here you find the longest holes on the course, #11 at 356' and #10 at 330.
Then, #14, #15 and #17 are all short ace runs, averaging just 157' with no trees to get in your way. #18 is about the same distance but requires some shot shaping around several trees.
This is a very nice beginner/family course. Almost no chances to lose a disc here, the pond doesn't come into play, and the OB properties don't really come into play. It also checks that "tale of two nines" course description. So if those newbies you are bringing to the course prefer wooded, or open holes, you can play that particular 9 (#9 does come back to the parking lot).

About as good as it gets for practice. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is on a beautiful piece of city property and also serves as a multi-purpose park/recreation area. Its very scenic and relaxing and for how busy it is I rarely have pedestrians in the way of discing. The front nine are heavily wooded sans a few holes and act as a great warm up for the longer back nine. It is a great course for a random practice round and the chance of losing discs is quite low. Because its a park there are bathrooms and soda machines as well as an adjacent soccer field for driving practice when empty. Multiple pin positions on many of the holes as well.

Cons:

Most players with any experience will find this course very easy. There aren't too many holes over 300 ft and there are a couple gimme birdies (#14, 15). Every so often a random person will obliviously walk right across the fairway but as previously mentioned it doesn't happen too often from my experience.

Other Thoughts:

My opinion of this course has changed significantly in the years I've been playing. As I get better and play more courses, I've grown more of an appreciation for this course and have enjoyed it more in the last couple years. I got my first ace and second ace at this park so it will always be special in that regard. Objectively speaking it is a great place to go for a quick 18 if you live locally. I wouldn't drive a long distance to play just this course but if you are coming from out of town I would highly reccommend it as a warmup for tuscawilla or doris leeper. It is quite scenic and the front nine is relatively secluded for being a public park in a developed area of town. (listen for the owls that inhabit the front 9 around holes 4,5,6)

Local player review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 17, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great for the recreational player and beginning golfer. Also may challenge the regular player with some of the holes. Every hole is a potential birdy with virtually all an ace run

Cons:

plays short for the everyday player, especially 3 of the last four holes

Other Thoughts:

Lots of ace runs, assortment of hyzer and anhyzer shots, regular players should always be under par with the more skilled reaching double digits under. A fun little course and a great complement to the other local course.
The course has been recently renumbered with the original # 4 removed and a new hole 17 designed and in play.

1.Short, under two hundred ft. straight shot between a couple of trees gaurding the basket.

2. 300' open, basket tucked in behind a large tree to the left. easy birdy

3. anhyzer to relatively short pin, lots of trees to get in the way, tomahawk can be successful. great pin placement, add strokes if you go past out of the woods.

4. short and to the left, gaurded by trees, alot of righties prefer a flick

5. straight down a narrow opening with the basket a little to the left.

6. another shot straight down a narrow corridor, ace run if you hit your line.

7. short anhyzer, easy bird.

8. anhyzer or flick, get around the growth in the middle for a birdy.

9. nice hole, straight but early trouble with lots of trees to hit.

10. straight with a little fade through a hole or an anhyzer or flick will do the job here.

11. straight just short of 300' there is an ouside route with a disc that will come back.

12. straight at it with a little bit of arm. getting to the log or or around either side is desired

13.straight shot, also an outside route with a disc that will come back.

14. anhyzer with a fair amount of glide will get you parked.

15.run it!

16. run it again!

17. new addition, go straight at it with something that does not fade much and you've got a birdy!

18. short shot, basket gaurded by a couple of trees.

change of pace 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great to work on your short game. Lots of ace chances, Quick, "no worries" rounds. Great place to bring new players.

Cons:

Crappy, mudslide T-boxes.

Other Thoughts:

So Reed's not a championship course, who cares? It's a fun, easy alternative to our other course (Tuscawilla park, Awesome) with no chance of losing a disc. A good mix of holes, some easy, some ridiculous, but it will give you an opportunity to use every shot in your arsenal. forehand, backhand, hyzerbomb, pinball prayer, tree love a plenty. Have a fun round at the canal.
