great private course

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-awesome piece of private land with trees, meadows, a river, and some very mildly undulating ground
-total seclusion: no house or buildings on site and none immediately adjacent to the property
-Patriot baskets in great condition, detailed laminated signs near each tee
-great course design that makes good use of the land and emphasizes tunnels
-sensibly used OB is clearly marked
-easy navigation, natural flow, well marked
-Nathan is an great host and is quick to communicate
-looks like the course is constantly being improved

Cons:

-the turf tees are decent, there were also at least a couple dirt tees if i remember correctly
-no bathrooms or running water and not much very close by

Other Thoughts:

This is such a cool course and it looks like it is just going to get better and better. Nathan has designed a fun and demanding layout that makes great use of the land. The iteration of the course that I played is 18 holes with par set at 58. Nathan mentioned that hole 9 is getting a new, longer tee pad (on top of a storage container, once the deck is built) that about doubles the length of the hole so par could go up to 59.

The layout puts a premium on straight tunnel shots with 6 holes fitting that description. The majority of holes are moderately to heavily wooded and only about 6 or 7 holes are on the more open side, including three of the par 4 holes. The other par 4 is hole 7, a straight 422' tunnel with a mando that you must go under to be safe. The river can come into play on holes 12-14 but primarily on hole 12, which has the option of a big hyzer out over the water on the right or a tight tunnel on the left.

I thought the only drawback was some of the tees. Most of them are decent but a few were a little uncomfortable. Some of the more wooded areas, especially closer to the creek, have a lot of vine-like stuff growing out of the ground as well as stumps from removal of some of the larger diameter stuff. I can't remember exactly but I want to say that was a factor on a hole with a dirt tee... hole 12? It's also something to watch out for when walking down some of the fairways. I also feel like these are some of the things that will continue to improve over time. It is very clear that Nathan puts a lot of time and effort into this course.

This would be a great course anywhere but in Wichita Falls it stands head and shoulders above all the other local courses. The $5 course fee is well worth it and I would absolutely pay the $50 annual membership if I were a local. If you have a chance to play here, you should. If you know you will be heading to Wichita Falls, definitely make plans to play here.
