Creekview

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A basic but well-manicured course offering both wide open and woods holes.

-Amenities: Concrete tees, powder blue numbered DISCatchers, tee signs with all info and hole map. The maps are a little weird in that they separate the green from the rest of the fairway regardless of the terrain type, but they're easy to read nonetheless. A community board at the start seems to be pretty active.

-Navigation: Paths are remarkably clearly worn between holes, which makes navigation easy despite a few moderately long transitions.

-Maintenance: The golf-style grass is mowed to a brilliant, patterned sheen. The woods are kept nice as well.

-Woods Environment: The section from (2)-(10) includes some lush, secluded woods. It's a very nice nature walk/hike. The moniker "Riverview" may be misleading, but there's also a creek in parts.

-Open/Woods Variety: The course does a good job of mixing open and heavy woods environments. I'd consider (1), (11)-(13), and (16)-(18) the open holes (which are quite open as a whole), with (14)-(15) bridging the gap between them and the woods holes (2)-(10).

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Two basic types of holes, with a couple exceptions. The open holes are pretty straight and offer no obstacles other than treelines on the right and left to stay out of. They're in the 300' range generally. The wooded holes offer a good variety of shapes and elevation, and also include a creek on several holes to great effect. They come in a bit shorter than the open holes. The exceptions are the two par-4s, which both require careful placement and a gentle upshot to get the birdie.

Cons:

-Start/End: The course ends a pretty long walk from the start. I actually parked near the end and started with the long walk instead of finishing with it.

-Bent Cages: I haven't noticed this high a number of bent cages on this nice a course before. It's a little weird.

-Intermediate Variety: There are really only two types of holes, as noted above. The variety of the woods holes is nice, and earns Riverview its good marks. However, viewed on the whole, the course feels monotonous by the end.

Other Thoughts:

Riverview is a really nice park and offers you very few things to dampen the experience. It's got a basic combination of largely open and tightly wooded holes, and some of the creek plays are lots of fun. It's no regional destination, but it's a solid Good.

North Augusta's Novelty

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Riverview has some interesting holes, mostly in the woods with some moderate elevation changes. Several holes have interesting obstacles. #2 was interesting being down a tight fairway that suddenly drops off to an open green. #3 was very neat being over a ravine. #4 was my favorite hole being the longest hole at 552'. It's a good bit downhill off the tee. You want to throw a right to left backhand since the woodline on the right side is thick and down a steep hill. Throwing a driver could be risky if it doesn't turn left in time. The second shot is a sidearm or anhyzer down a more wooded, but generous fairway. #7 was a close favorite being pretty steep uphill and instantly over the creek.

-The walk gets steep in places. There are many bridges and stairs over creeks and on steeps parts of hills that make the walks less dangerous.

-Nice concrete tees. Great tee signs with hole diagrams. Baskets are painted blue.

-Elevation is pretty solid throughout the round. Nothing too significant, but several of the elevation changes are quick being on steep hills. #2 was a lot of fun throwing a putter down a tight fairway dropping off. A good looking tee shot could potentially go long since the hill is just shy of the green and drops off instantly. #7 was a difficult 245' that'll have many players throwing drivers to reach the basket. #10 was a very fun downhill right to left hyzer over the creek. #13 is the shortest hole on the course, but has the greatest use of elevation at Riverview. 190' and steep uphill through a wooded shoot from the tee and pretty far up a hill.

-True multi shot par fours. #4 I previously mentioned and is my favorite hole. It's a ton of fun throwing a hyzer down a wide wooded fairway just to have a possible look at the basket for the second shot. #14 is the other par four and is the toughest hole on the course. The tee shot is completely open. The second half of this course is tight and wooded, and the entrance to the woods is not particularly friendly. It's a tight gap that is only about 20' wide. If you throw too short or long from the tee, you'll probably have to pitch up to the gap just to have a straighter look to the pin.

Cons:

-Ends on a very weak note. After #14, Riverview loses its spark. #15 is a messy split fairway out of the woods. The fairway was unkept when I played here. You are throwing over a bunch of vegetation off of the tee, so if you have a poor tee shot, chances are that you'll be struggling to find your disc in the tall stuff. #16 is thoughtless wide open par three. #17 is a little more bearable, since there are some trees, but is still a pretty weak hole. #18 is a very boring finisher. Once again, wide open. You are backtracking #16 by throwing slightly downhill.

-You are going to spot many protected wildlife signs throughout your round. Several signs warning you about snakes. I saw a couple of them. Even if you don't see them, the rough here gets pretty bad. I was pretty itchy when I left. There's a lot of tall grass and thorns.

-Limited appeal. There were several holes that I liked (#3, #4, #6, #7, #10, #12, and #14) but many that I found to be no better than average or slightly below average. It's a casualty course that'll likely leave higher rated players a bit disappointed. Especially the ending.

Other Thoughts:

-It's not bad. Isn't the greatest course but it's worthy of a 3. I don't have much else to say about it. It's decent with some perks to it. Could use some TLC, especially during the summertime.

ADGA Spring Fling 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 23, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete tee pads on every hole
-Accurate tee signs with good detail.
-Tee signs had landing zone distances for par 4s.
-Restrooms on site.
-Baskets all in good condition.
-Navigation seemed simple enough.

Cons:

-Lack of challenge on some of the wide open holes.
-No real distance challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Played this course for the first time at the 2019 ADGA Spring Fling. It was a good event with no real complaints. I watched the drone footage before I went so it gave me an idea of what I was getting into, but it turns out the video is a bit outdated since the layout has changed some since its filming. The current maps on this site are not accurate as well.

There was nothing stupid hard about this course unless you are one to want to be able to birdie every hole. If so, then there are a couple that are very tough to get to with a good birdie chance.

This was definitely not a bad course, but not a destination course either. There are several wide open holes that work as fillers. These could probably be improved with some trees or azaleas strategically placed. (We are near the Masters after all.) There was also a lack of length in general. Don't get me wrong, the wooded holes were technical, so it made up for the length issue.

6/10/2020 Update:
I place my ratings based on comparison to other courses I have played and on a statistically normal distribution. So this rating could change in the future, but I ranked it right behind Boyd Pond if any locals care about such comparisons. I look forward to coming back next year to play in another Spring Fling.

course needs some work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well balanced, has a few par 4's and longer holes, beautiful park and woods area, goes along the river but you will never lose discs in the water

Cons:

Mosquito heaven, course is quite overgrown lately, needs lots of work and some redesign, course is about to lose a few holes due to new park construction

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course that needs some work due to city projects and overgrowth.

Park along the Savannah 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Online map and teesigns next to the concrete teepads made course navigation fairly easy for a first-time visitor.

Parking lot and practice basket near tee-1, as is the activities center with restrooms and vending machines. Basket-18 located on the opposite side of the parking lot.

Benches and trashcans scattered about. Park appeared to be very well maintained.

Cons:

The day I played, the main entrance was closed due to construction, so had to park with all the soccer minivans down the road to the left. Fortunately, basket-12 was near the closed entrance, so it was easy enough to start at tee-13.

Steep slope when nearing basket-2, although the newly-built steps helped.

Basket-18 missing.

Other Thoughts:

The course plays in the open space and along broad paths cut through the buffer of woods separating the multi-purpose park from the river. The river doesn't come into play, although a small, shallow stream running down to it does. Being near the river, the landscape is fairly flat, as are the holes, although about 1/3rd of them bring what elevation changes are available into play.

The first 2/3rds of the course plays in the woods, but only a few of these holes are tight/technical/sharp-turning. Most simply require a straight shot down a wide-and-tall "tunnel", with a bit of right or left fade as the disc nears the basket.

The last 1/3rd of the course is quite open, with an edge of woods or the odd tree near the basket to avoid, so there are chances to let your discs fly.

Distance-wise, there are four holes ~200', two holes 500'+, the remainder falling into a typical distance of 240'-340', with an overall average of 300'.

Favourite hole: #11. 300'. Plays in the midst of a small patch of woods, not tight, not wide, just right! Downhill initially, across a small stream as the fairway tightens a bit, then gently uphill to find the basket slightly to the left.

Overall, a solid course, one which should appeal to a variety of skill levels.

Convenient to Highway 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

There was a practice tee at the beginning of the course that was nice to have and warm up with. I loved the diversity of the course! The first section was very tight and wooded, while the last half opened up lets you break out the bigger drives. Many of the holes provided multiple throwing lanes, which makes the game even more fun.

Cons:

I had to walk 75% of the way down a handful of holes to figure out where the basket was hiding. I enjoyed the course even though the first few holes made it feel like I was in the wilderness with the narrow trails and steep inclines.

The signage wasn't very helpful in finding the next hole, so print a map or have access to the web while you play to help steer you in the right direction. I didn't see any trash cans that weren't on the street, so be a good citizen and bring a trash bag so you can carry it out (or to the next trash can). Since there weren't many options to put trash, I saw more garbage than I'm used to on courses.

Other Thoughts:

I chose this course over the other ones in Augusta because of the relative proximity to the highway. I got to this course within 5 minutes of getting off the highway, which was exactly what I hoped for. There is even a gas station to get something to drink just before the park entrance.
The last two holes were especially fun because they ran parallel to each other, so I was able to play them a few times to get in some extra practice.

Not a lot of disc golf players on this course when I was there, but the park and trails seemed busy.

You may want to wear shoes with good traction because the first 5-6 holes made for some challenging climbs up and down hills.

Varied Course On The River! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Riverview is a large multi-use park although the DG course mostly utilizes a part of the unused park. The teepads and signs at the pads are top notch. The course offers a nice variety of tight in the woods holes with some tricky doglegs to open field grip it and rip it shots. It'll challenge most players and frustrate quite a few as the rough can be downright ugly at times. There are benches at many of the holes. # 13 was my favorite hole; around 320' to a hidden basket set down in this mowed ravine. Putts and approaches on this hole could get exciting real quickly.

Cons:

I found this course a little trick to follow. After playing 1-3, I never did find the # 4 pad. A couple of next tee signs nailed to some trees would've have helped or how about hanging a metal "Next Tee" sign on the spokes of the basket pointing players to the next tee. I was also fairly lost after # 14.

Other Thoughts:

I think the designers should think about putting a teepad up on the hill (next to the soocer field) and allow you to tee off to that basket visible in the woods below. Would this be # 15. Would have been a fun tee off point. I'm not quite as enamored of this course as everyone else. While I think it's a nice course with a couple of wonderful holes, I don't see it as destination type course.
