Pros:
Riverwalk Academy is a short, kid-targeted seven-hole layout. If this field is mowed, it's a nice practice spot for locals. If not, watch your feet.
- This is a simple, seven hole beginner friendly layout. How beginner friendly is it? You just have to avoid the tree on #5 and you've cleared all obstacles.
- This is a short layout, with holes averaging under 150 feet. Most holes had listed distances. Some of these were clearly wrong. UDisc had lengths listed as well. Some varied from the tee markers. In general, both are in the same ballpark in terms of length, even if they're slightly different.
- Pitch-and-putt. I carried three discs. One a couple holes, I threw all three as I was trying to get an ace. On #3, listed at 171 feet, my three discs totaled maybe 15 feet from the basket.
- If you want to get a cubby ace, this is a perfect course for that. If you're playing some sort of marathon, seeing how many holes you can play in a certain period of time, this is the course for you. Even at normal walking speed, most players should be able to get at least six to eight rounds finished in an hour.
- If you want to introduce kids to the game, this is an excellent course for that. No obstacles mean nothing to knock down a shot. Even young kids should see a couple of 3s or 4s on this course.
- Pink baskets. Kids like bright colors.
Cons:
No obstacles. No challenge. Grounds crew seemingly doesn't use weed eaters in the fields, just mowers. So, be prepared for tall grass around the baskets.
- I kept an eye on the ground knowing this is a perfect field for snakes. Tall wild, unmowed fields just past the baskets means there will be wildlife in the area. On a warm day, I'd pay attention to what's around.
- If you're here to play an actual round, there's not a lot to like. One open field, ace-run layout is fine. Six of seven holes this way is tedious. At least #5 is a nice change of pace. It's actually a decent hole, slightly uphill and a tree to navigate around. After not having to think for four holes, suddenly having one layout that requires shot-making was a shock to the system.
- As mentioned above, tee signs had incorrect lengths on several holes. For practice/fun, it's not a big issue. It is a slight annoyance when you throw the listed distance, and you're 20 feet short.
- Did Riverwalk Academy relocate from somewhere? If not, where's the river I'm missing?
Other Thoughts:
Riverwalk is perfectly suitable for what it is. If you come here for anything more than bagging or practice, you'll be let down.
- This is a perfect addition to the York County mediocre disc golf trail. You're five minutes from Kathy Kitts Walking Trail, and its poetic layout. You're also close to Tirzah, Dutchman Creek Middle, Rawlinson Middle, Northwestern High, and York Prep, just to name a few. One could easily bag 12 - 15 courses, or more, while only bagging 90 - 120 holes, in a day. For the overachievers, 20 courses is easily attainable thanks to all the three to 12 hole layouts in the county.
- Sorry for the lack of individual hole breakdowns. #1 is open and straight. #2 is open and straight, with a slight downhill flair. #3 is open as is #4. #5 has a tree. #6 is open ands straight. And, to end your round, you have the shortest hole on the course, one that's open. There's your recap.
- You'll have the course to yourself if you come here. That means you can practice any and all parts of your game. I suspect a fair number of people discover the course by driving down SC-274 or Mt. Gallant and seeing the bright pink baskets in the field.
- I'd rather play Tirzah than here if I lived close by. Tirzah is at least a course in terms of design. This is a series of baskets in a field.
- In terms of wide open fielded, sub-1000 foot, one-tree, pink-basket courses, this is easily #1 in my book. To all you doubters, prove me wrong.
