Tight, yet fun - um signs in the tees? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Rivery is a pretty decent course overall.
Some rather scenic spots, rock outcroppings and a small river, in a nice park.

The design itself is pretty good for what land there is to work with, the fairways are there - tight and has shot shaping lines that can be made.

The concrete tee pads are rather nice, more on that in the cons...

Mostly every hole had a tee sing, some were missing, but they are descriptive, and show the hole accurately.

It is indeed a short to mid-range course almost every hole, with several ace runs - I got hole 2 (but that was about 165ft) very short with a nice lane. I think I pulled a driver once, and was not really challenged to throw far with accuracy here.

Cons:

Hmmm, how do I say this nicely - the tee signs are installed in the concrete of the tees...

No two ways to go about this, the installed clearly was not a golfer, nor got enough direction before making this MASSIVE error.

That is one of the worst wastes of time and money I've seen on a course. And its a terrible shame, as the pads would have been more than long enough, and the signs themselves are great - but combined - they both stink.

I couldn't see the sign from the tee, and the placement of the signs on the tees gave me about a 5 ft run up.

I won't bash the course for being wet and mushy, as the recent storms have impacted so much. The course actually held up very well for the recent conditions - water wise.

I will say, the lanes/fairways are incredibly overgrown, and this is another issue that a disc golf representative should address with the parks - as its my understanding that even minimal pruning as not allowed by non park employees.

The branches that need trimming, the edges of the fairways that are growing into to lanes, give you about a 4-6 ft gap on way too many holes.

Other Thoughts:

Total shame the tee/signs were installed like that.
This is why "we" as disc golfers need good representation for each course, and good relationships with each park.

I've played over 225 courses in 24 states, and two countries - this is by far the worst example of an installation gone bad I have ever seen.

Yet I still like the course, liked the layout, and think with a little local work/communication - this place could be a very nice place to play. The potential is there...

Fun, with a guide 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Many of the holes at Rivery have unique looks to them and the technical challenge is good. It's a very pretty walk through the woods with lots of pretty Texas flora and rock formations.

The challenge is good for intermediate players to pros and is a very good place to practice with putters and mids. (for beginners, the rough is a little thick and the fairways a little tight.)

Cons:

The course has been re-designed and the navigation is very challenging. Playing Rivery for the first time without a guide is 2/3 scavenger hunt and 1/3 disc golf. Highly recommended to print a map and preferably play with a guide.

The natural tee pads are a minor con. Most holes don't require a lot of power.

The lack of distance and multi-shot holes is a minor con.

Hole 1 and hole 2 crowd each other dangerously.

Holes 10 and 11 are back-to-back silly par 2's.

Hole 13 is one of the most ridiculous random pinball fairways I've seen.

Other Thoughts:

Please help to keep the course clean.

If you're playing in the North Austin area, wilco is much, much better.

Lost in the woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Excellent pin locations that maximize available topography

-Tightly wooded technical holes that will test your control and patience level

-Most of the holes are well designed and enjoyable once you find the tee

Cons:

-Bad flow from a lot of baskets to finding the next teepad and some walks are quite long

-Poor dirt tees that are rutted or even have tree stumps in them

-No signs except on the first hole

-When you add up the above cons it can lead to a frustrating round where you spend half of it searching for the next basket since that is the only thing that has numbers on it. Then once you find the basket you have to backtrack down the fairway to find the "worn spot" that is the teebox.

-Most of the holes are similar in style-- mostly straight or slight turns, shooting through tight woods, never really having the chance to let loose

-I didn't notice any trashcans and the course is worse off for it. Walking down the first fairway I noticed more trash strewn throughout the woods than I do on the entirety of most courses.

-The course feels unfinished and neglected. Apparently it was redesigned at some point, but the first design had tee signs which they didn't take down after the redesign. So now when you're searching for that next teebox all you find are the old tees still marked with the signs. The fact that they didn't even cut some of the stumps all the way down that were right in the middle of the teebox is just another sign of how neglected it is.

Other Thoughts:

It seems like a lot of thought went into the redesign of this course, but in the end those thoughts were not implemented well. They went through a lot of trouble redesigning it, but ultimately the course feels unfinished and neglected.

Overall, I enjoyed most of the holes even though most of them felt the similar to each other, but the flow, poor tees, lack of signage, and overall feel of neglect leave this lingering sour taste in my mouth. It was worth checking out, but if I'm going to travel up to north Austin for a round of disc golf, there are many better options than this course.
