As much fun as you can have in the backyard while clothed

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Rochelle Ridge is one of the more enjoyable backyard courses I have played, a lovely wooded park-style course with rolling hills, moderate tree cover, mown grass fairways, and a small pond and stream. Just a lovely place to throw discs, and the folks I met there could not have been more welcoming and helpful.

The course features 9 baskets with two sets of tees. Nice variety of elevation changes and hole shapes throughout the course, and each hole has a clean fairway or gap to hit. On certain holes avoiding the OB pond, stream, or property line fences provides additional challenge.

From the short tees, the course covers 2,545' with eight holes ranging from 180' to 330' and one 478' par 4. The course starts and ends near the house, so it is easy to finish hole 9 from the short tees and jump right into a round from the long tees (or vice-versa). Some of the long tees offer a different angle to the fairway, but others add 100 feet or more to the drive. If I was fortunate enough to play here regularly I would probably choose a mix of short and long tees to suit my distance.

One basket per hole, featuring a mix of basket types that were all level and caught well. A long pole was mounted on at least one basket for visibility. Turf tees were level and adequately sized, and tee signs were sufficiently descriptive.

Navigation was pretty straightforward, with no long walks between holes. I probably checked the navigation app a time or two while playing.

Favorite holes:

Hole #1 is a lovely starting hole, winding gently downhill between mature trees. Measuring 313' from the short tee and 450' from the long tee, big arm folks might be able to throw over the top but I was happy to thread a gentle turnover between the tree canopies.

Hole #4 is a challenging 478' dogleg right, with the pond on the right side protecting the landing zone and approach. The approach crosses a casual stream valley to reach a picturesque protected green.

Cons:

Some risk of disc loss in the pond and OB areas. Thick rough on a few holes could eat errant drives. Sloping terrain may prevent you from seeing where your disc lands on a few holes, so watch drives carefully.

People live here and parking is limited. Depending where cars are parked, you may need to play it safe on a drive or two.

Other Thoughts:

This course surrounds someone's house so please contact the owner before playing. When I texted a day ahead the owner replied immediately. Park in the grass behind the long tee for hole #1.

The short tees are labeled as holes 1-9, and the long tees are labeled as holes 10-18. I played in this order, but of course players are free to mix and match tees to suit their preference.

Five bucks to play, which seemed well worth it to me. For traveling players, Rochelle Ridge is not far from Rockwater Park, Raptor's Roost, or an abundance of other 9-hole courses such as Greene Park or Mountain View.
