A Private Gem

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) *Private course on private land that requires membership, invitation, or an event to play. You will have to sign a waiver to play this course as well.

2) As a Private course the upkeep is top tier. When I was lucky enough to play it all the fairways were mowed immaculately, rough was knocked down in most areas and left thick and punishing where the designer intended. Port-o-johns in several places, and trash cans every 4-5 holes.

3) One set of tee pads, 2 pin positions (long and short) and both had baskets in at the same time. This may have just been because there was a tournament going on utilizing both layouts. Tee pads are large, wide, textured concrete in excellent condition.

4) New condition Veteran baskets (for the short layout) and new condition Prodigy baskets for the long layout which made identifying which basket you were playing to extremely easy.

5) Solid mix of tight gap densely wooded holes with more open but still lightly wooded holes. The course utilizes elevation changes throughout, creeks, water features and the river to create some extremely challenging holes. Top notch course design for the property space available.

6) The owner installed hundreds of feet of catch net material (similar to that at a baseball stadium) along the river side of the course to prevent discs from being lost in the river. I know from experience how expensive those are and the fact that he added them for courtesy sake is worth a 0.5 point increase on it's own.

7) Most teepad and green areas were freshly mulched. I loved that on tricky greens with a roll away potential the designer chose to forgo the mulch and utilized rocks or left tree stumps strategically around the basket. It definitely added to the difficulty of hitting the correct part of the green at the right angle and speed. A very nice subtle touch that would probably be missed if you weren't looking for it.

8) There are a few water carries but none are oppressive and can be thrown around easily if conceding a Par on those holes.

9) So many good holes it is almost impossible to pick a signature hole, as this course will offer a unique hole that is impressive for all skill levels. Hole #1 will probably get the most votes as it was a massive downhill drop Par 3 through a tunnel of trees to a protected green on a knoll with trees blocking both left and right hyzer lines and tight OB left and right in the 485 Ft range. This may be a Par 4 (and still tough) normally but it was a 3 for our tournament. Great view from the tee pad, the river, the entire center of the course which is a massive farmed field which was soybeans at the time, the woods and rock features to your left. This course starts you off right.

10) About half the course are densely wooded (but entirely landscaped) holes with mandos along the river bank that force you to throw tight snaking lines through them to pin locations on mounds, side slopes, elevated locations, and death puts at water. Though several of them offer the same shape at first glance, the designers use of mandos and unique basket location alter each hole more than enough to have their own identity and shot required. Stellar course design.

11) The short pins offer a very challenging but fair Recreational to Intermediate level course. If you play for Par and make your putts you can shoot Par here pretty easily. The long pins offer a much more significant challenge, and while I wouldn't say it's Pro Tour level, it is definitely a challenge for even those 990-1010 rated and a struggle to get much below 5 or 6 under. Late gaps, early tight mandos, runaway greens, natural OB everywhere, this course punishes you for lazy mistakes and doesn't give up birdies easily.

Cons:

1) The biggest con has to be that this course is Private and requires a lot of steps to get to play. If you are lucky enough to get to play it, don't miss the opportunity.

2) There is no space to grow the course to make it even more pro worthy. They used every inch of the property that was not being farmed (and that farmed area would just be flat field throwing and make the course worse in my opinion).

3) This isn't a resort, and you can't stay on site. Not really a con, but if this was a private course that you got to play as a perk of staying at say an AirBnB, it would really be a positive.

4) Right on the river in southern KY so if you play in the warmer months expect the Humidity turned up to 11, ticks if you get off the fairway, snakes if you get farther off the fairway, and expect a very long walk as elevation and the design (playing around a farm field in the center) will take more out of you than you would normally expect.

5) There is very little parking on site. (They actually had us park at the Corvette Museum and sent shuttle busses to ferry us back and forth).

Other Thoughts:

100% a destination course if you can find a way to play it, nestled in Bowling Green and surrounded by other top notch courses, this one sets itself above all others. The owners seemed extremely nice and passionate about disc golf.

While not on the same level as Idlewild in terms of length, notorioty, or prestige, Rock River Ranch delivers in all other areas and does not disappoint. Probably the most disappointing thing you will find is not being able to play this course multiple times on the regular. Bring your camera, take your time, and enjoy this treat of a course.
