Great Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2020 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Fun and challenging course which has a good mixture of open and wooded holes. Most baskets range 330-400 feet from the tee with a few over 400 feet. Course demands both power and precision with the typical shot requiring you to clear 200 feet of open space and then 200 more feet with tight tree coverage. Holes are designed fairly and force you to throw certain shots. There is a 3-hole stretch on the back 9 with shorter, unobstructed baskets which don't match the feel of the rest of the course. The first 3 holes play as open.

Overall this is a very good course with the potential of being great. The main problem is that the course is still a work in progress. Navigation is very hard and you'll get lost if you don't take a picture of the map by hole 1. There is some cleaning up to do around some of the fairways (mainly 17 & 18). A few of the baskets on the back 9 could be reworked to add challenge. Finally, a dangerous, blind shot on hole 10 which crosses a bike path needs to be changed. These, however, are all fixable.

The main thing the course has going for it is the space itself is wonderful. The trees are the perfect density apart for good disc golf. There is ample space to let the disc rip when you have to. The fairways use a great combination of open grass and trees to create challenge. I would not be surprised to come back in a few years and have this be an elite course. If you want to be challenged by far and precise shots with some (but not a lot) of wiggle room for error, this is the course for you.

Rock Solid Rockburn Branch 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ About equal presence of open, wooded, and hybrid holes means good variety.
+ Some very wide open holes to allow for max power throws.
+ Clever wooden arrows at the bottom of all baskets point the player towards the next tee.
+ Only one pin in play on most holes, but all holes have multiple possible pin possibilities.
+ Fun elevation challenges at multiple holes throughout the course.
+ The wooded holes are mostly fair and encourage forethought.
+ A few water hazards add to the fun.

Cons:

- The 'current tee' signs ought to be replaced. Most are too badly damaged to be of any use to the player, and some are missing altogether.
- One tee area per hole, and the tee pads are hit or miss among rubber, natural and concrete.
- Some 'next tee' signs at the bottom of the baskets were pointed in the wrong direction. Luckily, they can be moved with some effort.
- The eyehook and padlock system used here for telling players were the pin is located needs to be updated or replaced because multiple 'current tee' signposts were missing them.
- Some of the flight paths share space with walking trails and roads. Please watch for pedestrians and cars.
- No running water anywhere here that I could find. Make it a point to bring your own fluids!

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole, as I am sure is the favorite of many others, is hole 15. It is a striking downhill tee off that starts among some trees and opens to a wide field below and drops into a creek. My least favorite hole is the one right after it. 16 felt way too narrow, and I didn't like how the player is expected to throw such a blind left turn.

As for the course as a whole, Rockburn Branch is very much worth your time. It is a varied course that takes a player through open, hybrid and wooded holes both with and without elevation. During my session in late August 2018, most of the holes' distances were longer than 350 feet, which makes for a fulfilling session of disc golf. Keep in mind that the pin positions can change- though I do not know how often.
The course itself is implanted within a decent sized community park, but it is clear that the disc golf course was a later development within the park planning because some holes have you throwing over roadways or popular foot traffic areas. During hole 3, for example, it's hard to not feel like a sideshow as you're teeing off so close to a basketball court and a playground right alongside a maintenance roadway.

Thankfully, most of the course plays away from the general public. There are some dense tunnel shots within the woods like hole 7, several lovely downhill open glides like hole 13, two or three water hazard holes and some tree-dodging hybrid holes like hole 6, just to name a few examples. I do think that every disc golfer will find something to enjoy at this course because Rockburn Branch does not overly emphasize any one kind of hole; it is a very good well-rounded course.

The overgrowth needs to be better addressed, though- especially in the back nine's wooded holes. During my most recent session, there was a crew mowing lawns and weed-whacking, but there are undeniably some hard-to-reach spots where ride mowers simply cannot travel. This makes those claustrophobic woods more difficult to manage. Just throw with intent and keep both eyes on the disc, and you should be fine.
So, in closing, make it a point to come this way if you find yourself in the Baltimore/Ellicott City area. I recommend Rockburn to anybody who enjoys getting a wide sampling of everything a disc golf course can offer.

Nice course, but not worth the drive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful setting, mostly manicured, and a nice mix of open and wooded holes. Great up- and downhill holes, and even some historic buildings along the course.

Cons:

The layout is not intuitive! We finished hole #3, went to the next logical tee pad, but it was hole #5. It took us a few minutes to find the basket for #4, then found the tee pad. This was not the last time. We even had a guy with us who had played before. I'm sure it would have taken longer if we had been without him.

Other Thoughts:

If I lived in the Baltimore area, this would definitely be a go-to course! It has some "grip it and rip it" holes, as well as some that challenge accuracy.

I'd go back if I was passing through the area, but not just to play here. That being said, if you are going through, and have time for only one round, this course will not disappoint you.

Pretty Park, Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-As the title suggests this is a beautiful course. Rolling hills, mature trees, several places where you cross a small winding creek or the creek frames the green.
-Good signage. it would seem some of the locals have taken past reviews to heart because every tee post has a new sign attached to the post near the pad.
-long teepads are mostly a pro. A few are made of that green carpeting material which i really dislike personally because they get really slick but most are the rubber flypads which work well
-nice mix of shots off the tee. Threw backhand, forehand, and overhand and discs from putters to high speed drivers. good mix of wooded and open shots as well.
-challenging enough to be fun but not so difficult or unfair as to be a chore. i would think a few stokes under par would be a good round in its current configuration.

Cons:

-the long pin placements are awkward in several places and a few are impossible to access short of a miraculous shot because discs don't fly the way they are laid out. This would be fine if the longs were true par 4s designed to be two shot holes, but what often happens is you are left with a 80-130 foot pitch to the basket whether the drive is great or just average.
-while the fairways are well defined and well maintained, the rough boarding the course is brutally thick. to the point that if you are playing to a pin position tucked into a narrow alley of rough you really have to play it like an island hole surrounded by water. if a disc goes deep off the fairway the chances of retrieving it are slim.

Other Thoughts:

Rockburn provides a really pleasant and enjoyable round of disc golf. the first 5 holes give a chance to air things out on an open track and the wooded holes that follow demand accuracy (along with being a beautiful walk). Hole 9 is one of my favorites, playing either to an island in front of the creek or over depending on pin position. 12 is fun shot framed by a wooden cattle fence on the right and an old barn on the left. 15 is probably the signature hole, teeing from elevation, over the creek and into the wood line.

All in all, Rockburn is a lot of fun and worth a stop if you're in the area. Just pay attention to the holes that have heavy rough near the pins and know which side you can miss on.

Variety in scenery and shots and challenging. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 1, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

the course starts in a public park, plays through the woods and out onto a farm. along the way you get a lot of variety where all shots and skills are needed. the baskets change here every few weeks giving good replay value to the course.

Cons:

In the summer this course gets wild with overgrowth of poision ivy and sticker bushes. if you play then go for accuracy over distance and wear some good knee high sports socks. holes in the woods 7-9 and 16-18 get very wet after a good rain. i normally wait for 2 days of sun to follow a good storm so your not playing in slushy/swampy conditions.

Other Thoughts:

#15 is the signature hole here. you shoot down from a hill and a old rustic staircase, hoping to cross a shallow stream and make it into the edge of the woods by the basket. always fun to watch a disc fly from the tee and get a good 30-45 seconds of airtime! closest to my new job, starting to become a regular, play about once a week here.

Solid Intermediate Course Everyone Can Enjoy! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Rockburn Branch Park is a large sprawling park with plenty of room for the disc golf course. The course features a wide variety of terrain, from wide open fairways with elevation change, to tight tunnel shots with nasty thick rough to some more wooded holes with a creek that comes into play.

The course starts with a nice information sign and arrows pointing you to the # 1 tee. It has extra long, rubber tee pads. The signs are nice and informative but badly faded in places making them hard to decipher. This course uses a unique system for showing players which placement, A-B-C-D, the basket is currently in. There is a small padlock locked to a hook showing the placement.

The terrain starts with some lovely rolling, grassy hills which then transform into some tighter tunnel holes.

There are benches on many holes.

# 15, as previously mentioned, stands out as the signature hole. Everything about it is pretty special and unique from it's clever tee pad placement to the long downhill throw and then on to the basket across the creek which is tucked into the woods.

Cons:

Navigation is a little difficult at times. Signs were missing or unreadable for 3-4-5. I missed playing # 4, I think. I ran into some locals and followed them which helped out quite a bit.

And navigating around the barn area, # 12-13-14-15 is kind of confusing. The locals explained it to me and I'm still not sure if I played those four holes correctly.

There are some definite "Kiss Your Discs Good Bye" holes here. # 9 &10 are tight and then # 11 is one where an errant anhyser toss might be gone forever.

Other Thoughts:

This is just a good, solid course that most players can play and enjoy. I wouldn't exactly call it newbie friendly but you could bring that newbie here. Maybe have them skip a couple of holes. Advanced players could player here and find challenge.

Nice Balanced Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good mix of wooded tunnels, wide open, hyzer and anhyzer holes.

- Many of the C position tees are a beast no matter how hard you can throw. I went today and most of the pins were in C. Very humbling but, in a good way.

- Good variation between pin positions and they are changed often.

- Local group keeps adding rubber and turf tee boxes. good upkeep and improvements all the time.

- Three nice "air it out" shots

- Great use of hills and elevation changes.

- Nice use of the Rockburn Creek on 2 to 4 of the holes (depending on basket position). Creek is very shallow. Discs can easily be fished out with a downed stick. You are better off NOT using a floating disc on hole 9 and 15 as they will sometimes float downstream as opposed to rest in one spot. Holes 9 and 15 always have the creek come into play to some degree. Holes 7 and 8 border the gcreek only when in the C position.

Cons:

- VERY easy to lose a disc. Lots of undergrowth and viney trees to devour discs. I have lost more discs here than any where else. Holes 6, 10, 11 and 15 are the worst offenders and a few bad throws on these holes can lead to almost as much time easter egg hunting as playing the actual course. Unless your game is flawless expect some time bushwhacking.

- Some trees and limbs could be trimmed. Certain branches are in just the right spot to deflect a disc. While this is a nice challenge at times, it can also be annoying. For example, hole 15 could be trimmed to make the opening a little wider. This could relieve some of the problems with lost discs and allow for more of a comfort zone to air out the throw from the hill. One mistake on this hole and you lose a disc. Hole six is also a pinball machine/lumberjack hole and near impossible to not hit a tree. Take a few trees out (and plant some elsewhere) and this would be a more of a skill tee drive and less of a cross your fingers shot. However the big tree on hole 10 is an excellent obstacle that makes you have to execute a hyzer or anhyzer to avoid it.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is very good and I'm lucky to have it as my second closest local course. Some minor improvements with the excessive brush on some holes and fairway tree limbs could put it into the upper echelon and with all of the nice work that is constantly being done it may just happen...

Great location near BWI. Nice layout through multiple use park. Well maintained by park staff cutting grassy areas. Variety of shots required from open grassy to narrow carved fairways. Risk / reward layout. Off the fairway is very thick in places.

Cons:

Could use a few more signs for first timers. Used to concrete pads. A few blind shots through multiple use areas look like could be trouble? Had a mountain bike rider go through group on tee - not very polite?
Horse/rider on 18 like they owned the park?

Other Thoughts:

Solitude in Maryland 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 30, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Not far from Baltimore is a place you can go to feel some solitude and play some quality disc golf. Rockburn offers a variety of holes that are all completely unique - no two are alike, and many are memorable. It's challenging mix of grassy open (but hilly fairways and woods, with heavy (and sometimes punishing rough lining the borders). The fairways are reasonable, but errant throws can be punished. Variety of narrow, wide, elevated, left, right and straight.

The little locks on the eyelets that hang on the tee signs indicate what the pin position is (top is A, Middle is B, bottom is C). Nice touch.

Examples:
#6 gives you a slight dogleg left with a choice of an open tunnel to the far right or grove of thin trees that cover the entire left side. Do you play it safe or take your chances?
#9 goes downhill through thick trees, and over a creek with a dogleg right after that. Hit early and you may have a rough approach.
#12 goes up through a narrow opening right by the scenic farmhouse. It emerges into a small orchard- a the long pin is at the end of this orchard. I once saw a fox here (still the only one I've seen in my life).
#13-15 go up and down the same hill around the same farmhouse and are truly enjoyable.

Cons:

Yes, the rough can be nasty. It is possible to lose discs out there. But as others have said, the fairways are reasonable, but not for a beginner, unfortunately. I took a newbie (1st timer) here and we played 1-8. Holes after that would be just frustrating.

I really wish they would at least flatten some of the tee pads (the natural ones). They do have a few rubber ones on the back nine which is a nice start.

Update: When I played in Oct 2018, many of the tee signs were missing or laying on the ground next to the sign post. It certainly would be nice to have these fixed. Also, the map on this site could be updated. Hole
#4 tee pad has changed location and it took me awhile to find it as the map was pointing me to a spot about 300' away from the new tee pad.

Other Thoughts:

Although navigation is fairly self explanatory, print the map- this will really help in a few spots.

I'm not sure why the First hole is listed as a par 4. It is surely a 3 (though I got a 4 because I plain blew it!). Also, hole 1 is a bit odd for a first hole - it goes blind over a grassy slope and hole #2 pin is the first thing you see (as it sits at the end of #1 fairway). So, a bit confusing and (if the park would allow it) I would change the teepad and plant a couple of trees for challenge (it's by far the weakest hole on the course, by design). As for the others - good show!

Another good one 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is in beautiful Rockburn Park. The course provides a bunch of technical shots, long drives, and tricky puts.

Multiple pin positions available, MACH 5 baskets are in good conditional also.

The course stretches from one side of the massive park to the other. Obsticles of trees, barns, rivers, rolling hills, and well groomed tunnel shots will challenge even the most experienced thrower.

Course is well laid out on the course map next to the parking lot. There are also paper copies of the course available to take with you.

Easy to find, plenty of parking

Cons:

The tee pads need a make-over. As in most of my reviews to I am sensitive to this topic. There are a mix of pads on this course. Most are grass, that are dug out, due to use or poor upkeep. Some have built up wooden platforms with faux-grass covering them.

Other Thoughts:

With a couple fundraising events the course can either fill in the tees or put in some more permanent. Overall impression of the course is a 'Must Play'

I love this course.

Getting Better All the Time! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Rockburn Branch is a solid, challenging course which has loads of variety in terrain and hole design. You'll be throwing a wide range of shots off the tee and because of the intense and often prickly rough, you'll have to know how to make save shots from awkward positions or in some cases know 'when to fold'em' and pitch out for a well-deserved bogey. Some reviewers have noted the thick rough as a con, but at Rockburn, this shaggy shule is usually far off course from where ideal shots should land - in this case, the rough acts as an effective punisher for playing beyond one's means or just throwing poor shots. Having said this, I wouldn't recommend Rockburn for the newer player who is still in the process of mastering a straight, controlled fairway drive. Without having a safety fairway shot that you can count on, this course will likely be very frustrating. For more advanced players, the rough very effectively separates players by not allowing an easy up-and-down for three. Successfully managing the rough (and scoring well) means either not landing in it (duh!) or, having the skills necessary to make great saves.
As other reviewers have stated, with the exception of a couple of holes on the front 9, this course is a nearly exclusively disc golf activity area - you will likely not have to wait for other pedestrians to clear out of fairways.
Finally, part of the title of this review has to do with all of the new pin placements and other improvements that are ongoing to make this course the best it can be. Having a number of distinct pin placements adds a lot of replay-ability to this course and will keep players on their toes. The downside to this is that newer players may have quite a bit of difficulty in locating pins on blind turns, etc.

Cons:

Drainage and teepads are two of the main drawbacks that I see out here. First, the natural teepads can be pretty rutted, the local club, however does a ton of maintenance out here!, but from time to time, you'll hit Rockburn at a time where mother nature is a step ahead of the volunteers. The local club is starting to put in nicer tees (rubber mats) and is experimenting with some strange raised astroturf tees which just don't work very well as they are slippery and you have to step up during the runup to throw from them. Drainage doesn't need more than a quick mention, but the back wooded holes at Rockburn especially are not the place you want to be when it has been raining - check the course conditions or recent weather before heading out and you'll be less likely to run into unexpected mud.

Other Thoughts:

As I touched on earlier, this course isn't for the 'newbie' player because of the 'rough' rough, but it is just this feature which makes Rockburn a great tournament course for more experienced players. Large variety in shots, terrain, and now pin placements will keep you coming back for more!

Third Best Course in Baltimore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of space. Tees have giant signs next to them so they are easy to spot. It's a pretty course. When we played, there is an ice cream truck full of frisbees at the parking lot. The guy was very friendly and was selling frisbees at fair prices. The course has a secluded feel that makes you forget you are near a major city.

Cons:

sometimes a little tough to find the next tee without a map. When i played (late August) the grass in the fairways hadn't been mowed for a while, and the rough was very rough. I lost a frisbee in one of the heavily wooded holes with the intense ground cover. Had i not been wearing shorts i would have looked longer but was afraid of ticks/poison ivy.

Other Thoughts:

This is my third favorite around bmore, next to Patapsco and then Druid Hill

Just Solid 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is pretty much separate from other park activities. Nice secluded feel for most of the course. Practice basket down hill from parking lot. Directly after 18. Multiple basket positions for added variety. OK signs at each tee box with marked basket positions and a map of each hole. There are also benches at most of the tees.

Nice vary of shots needed. Left, right and straight shots scattered throughout the course. There is also a nice mix of open vs wooded holes. And some holes that start in the open and play into the woods. This course also does a nice job using the available elevation.

Course plays around an old farm so there is not only some nice natural features to play around, but some fences and buildings come into play. It doesn't turn the course into a putt-putt course at all. Just adds a little different challenge to a couple holes.

Cons:

Uneven natural tee pads. A few holes also have some turf and/or rubber pads. Nice pads would really be nice at this course. The signs are a little old, and could use some updating. Navigation can be a little tricky so check a map before you go, or bring one with you.

Other Thoughts:

Just a nice, enjoyable course. Hole 15 is probably the signature hole. You throw off a decent sized hill, through some trees, and down over a creek into the woods. The basket is then positioned in a bunch of large rocks or boulders. Kind of a Stonehenge hole. I also enjoyed holes 4,5,6,9 and 10 quite a bit. That's a good amount of memorable holes for a course. Plus there really is no bad hole here. Nothing seems squeezed in or out of place. If you are in MD make sure you plan a stop at Rockburn. It may not be as well known as a few of the other MD courses, but it is definitely worth a visit.

Excellent variety of holes. A great intermediate course, not too easy, not too hard. Some really interesting shots and lots of elevation changes. Hole 15 is a sweet downhill shot across a field and then into the woods down near the creek. Really fun, I threw a few discs on that hole. Markers point you to the next tee.

Cons:

Signs are confusing, and getting "off course" can happen often (even with the signs pointing you in the right direction). The baskets can be confusing a bit as well, especially with the multiple pin placements. I threw to hole #2 right off the bat and had to start over. Also, it seems like if you went in the middle of summer, the vegitation and bugs could be a problem here.

Both sweet and prickly. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 20, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The baskets are DGA Mach V's and all were in great shape except 12 which was bent some.

Most of the tee pads are natural, about 4 tees were some kind of artificial turf, the one next to the Doyle house is asphalt (which was once a driveway), and tee 16 is a wooden platform. All were playable. The dirt tees are kind of rough but they are generous with the width to make up for it. On each tee sign there is a set of hooks with a letter above it denoting a basket position. They put a small padlock in a hook to signify which basket to use. This is a great idea. No one can mess with it.

Take time to watch the basket by basket video on YouTube. It will definitely help you the first time you play. The map is useful but it could stand to have the additional basket positions added to it.

Generally speaking the fairways are well defined. They have used the available land well. It is not perfect but very doable. Because of this the general flow of the course is good. The only real blip on the course is going from 2 to 3 where you have to cross over 6 to get to it.

The practice basket is great. It is in the woods and its position allows you to practice all types of putts and approaches.

The course demands an ability to throw a variety of shots to play well. There are plenty of elevation changes, water hazards, a good mixture of lefty, righty, and straight fairways. There are both open bomb throws and very technical throws. Most putting areas are clean and workable.

While the underbrush is a definite bad problem, according to several locals there has been a lot of work to correct this. It is an ongoing work of the local club and if what I have been told is true there has been a big improvement and it will get better with time.

As for course amenities there are a few. It does have covered picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts, biking/walking trails, and plenty of parking.

There were benches and trashcans at several tees.

I did not want to write a novel but there is not a hole by hole review so I will try to add one in the 'other thoughts' section.

Cons:

The tee signs are fairly new but they are encased in wooden cases with Plexiglas covering an aerial picture. They all are sweating and moisture has built up between the Plexiglass and picture making them hard to read.

The underbrush, especially the briers, is real rough. Particularly from early spring to late fall. Several of the regulars I spoke with had the same general comment "the course is nearly unplayable in the summer if you get into the shule".

Hole 9's fairway is really non-existent. If they were to trim some small trees out it would really help without messing up the hole.

There are no crossing fairways but on 3 you are throwing very near a children's playground. When you are at the tee area for 5 be very careful for errant drives from both 3 and 4 because they do come down in the tee area.

There are some serious drainage issues. The mud and standing water was a constant. Making getting around without wet feet difficult but not impossible. The worst one is 16 which has the platform for a tee. It makes for a very playable tee, but moving from the tee to the fairway you will be jumping form one little semi-dry spot to another in order to keep your feet dry and mud free.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed myself. After 3 three rounds in one day. It was a very good tired. It is definitely a course on the upswing. The club, led by Pro Brian Cooke and his company Disc Outfitters, is working hard to make this a better course. It is a course I will return to to play again.

I was really torn by what rating to give it overall. It is a 4 or maybe for 4.5 as a course. But the teepads, drainage, shule, and signs really do hurt it. In comparing it to other courses it came down to details not overall picture. So it gets a 3.5. Fix the signs and teepads and it goes to 4. If the shule (ther briers are thick and mean) can be beat back farther and some simple fixes for the drainage issue can be adopted then this course could be a top 10.

If the local group continues its work this could be a premiere course.

HOLE BY HOLE

1) One is a great start. It is an open field throw over a hill. The hill makes it impossible to see the basket making it a great challenge. There is a pole sticking from the top of the basket so you can locate it from the tee. The distance is perceptive and the basket is on a slope so if the disc lands and rolls it can roll quite a way.

2)You start from the woods and throw down a tunnel to the same side of the hill as 1. It is a straight throw with some limbs to contend with. Do not get into the shule, especially on the left. Again be wary when putting because if you miss the disc can roll a long way down the slope.

3)This is where the playground is and a little OAT could send it right into it. The basket is a straight throw over open area then a tight left at the end around a tree. A bit to much hyzer (RHBH) and you could nail someone on tee 5 if it gets through some scrub trees.

4)I liked this one. Having the basket on a steep hill, and out of site made for a neat challenge. The hill is steep and long. My first time through I threw a Wraith but found it to be to much disc and was at the bottom of the hill with a long, steep, uphill putt. The second time I used a viper and was above it about 30 feet. There is a mando here and it is for safety because tee 5 is to your left and is definitely in reach of most players on any errant throw. We had one come down very close to us.

5) It is over a very open area that is at the bottom of the hill and the basket is in the edge of the trees. A great hole because it is deceptive due to the height above the basket and the shule to your right if you OAT.

6)Down a hill and into the trees for a basket that sits in a prison. A roller or a strong hyzer at the end down an opening on the right will get you there for a duece.

7)A straight tunnel shot with rough shule on each side and a low ceiling.

8)Another tunnel but it has its own personality. When you play it you will understand.

9) A Monster! We played the basket on both sides of the stream which is at the bottom of the hill during different rounds. We found this to be a difficult hole to manage. When you look from the tee the basket is blind at the bottom of the hill and across the stream in its normal position. The only problem is that there is a line of tress at the top of the hill and there is really no fairway through. You either have to be deadly accurate or lucky to get through there. Once past that you will have a great time getting over the stream to the basket.

10)Depending on the basket position you will have a either an up or a putt if you get to the top of the hill on your drive. But that big tree will give you fits and makes the hole a real good challenge.

11) A straight throw down a long corridor and a left at the end with the basket up near the fence. Someone with very good overhand throws could have a strong advantage here by throwing over the shule on the left and straight at the basket. High risk and high reward throw.

12)The photos here are wrong. The tee is no longer on the road but about 75 feet to the left between the house and the pictures position. It is now, in my opinion, both safer and a better challenge. No matter what the basket position is used you have got to get in through the framed opening next to the fence to have a chance at a duece.

13) A great lefty hole. It is thrown from a high position above the basket over an open field into a small clearing on the right. The stream again comes into play if you cannot get around the corner, and if it is to tight the shule will welcome you to its nighmare.

14)Uphill and behind the 2 cedars. Not as easy as it appears. But a nice line to the left. The tee for 15 is just to the right but a big cedar protects it. We saw 4 different discs get stopped by it that were headed our way.

15) The signature basket and a great one. It is from the top again over the open field, over the stream, into the woods, with the basket protected by very large rocks. Even the pros had a hard time here.

16)My favorite hole. This one has the raised wooden platform for a tee. It is a tight throw down a tunnel and a hard dogleg left then through some more trees about 200 feet to the basket.

17)A very difficult left to right. About 100 feet from the tee is an opening on the right and then about 200 feet to the basket. Throw the disc with a hard turn to the right and land on the high side of the slight slope and you will be fine. Also a high risk/high reward alley for good over hand throwers.

18)A great finish but not an easy one. There are three basket positions with one you can see way up the fairway. That one is the course practice basket but is used by many as the basket for the hole. No matter which position nothing is going to happen until you clear the trees about 125 in front of you. Getting past those on the first throw is the key.

An excellent play, but choose wisely 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A really nice collection of holes with multiple pins that plays over beautiful rolling hills and through and around some large stands of trees. Initially my general take was that the course was open as there are only about five holes that I'd call 'woods' holes, but almost every drive demands some precision to avoid obstacles and/or rough that is sometimes far worse than you may think at first glance. The course starts with a nice open boomer that plays sidehill along a slope that falls to your left. There can be tall grass over the hill off to the left that you may not be able to see from the tee, if you see your disc heading left try to get a good bead on it. After #1, you backtrack a bit down the hill and to your left to #2 tee, this hole is a pretty straight open fairway, but there are trees on both sides to keep you honest. After #2 you turn slightly to your left and walk past the basketball court on your right to the #3 tee on your left. This is where the 'choose wisely' part begins, the short pin is no problem but if it's in the long position there's some god-awful rough off to the left. If you're not confidant in your ability to keep it in the fairway you might want to throw something expendable here. See the lost and found thread on the MD-Discgolf website for numerous tales of woe here. #6 is is where this course really gets going and doesn't stop 'til your done, this is a nice downhiller across the road to a pin in a stand of trees on the left. #7 is a classic woods hole. #8, #10, 12 and #18 all have two pin positions installed, make sure you walk up and see them both before driving so you agree ahead of time which one you're throwing at;-). #9 is an extremely tight downhill shot to a pin just on the other side of the creek, probably my second favorite hole. #10-12 look pretty open but the rough is again fraught with peril. #12 also has a second pin location that is hell-and-gone from the short pin and is known as Oxen-ho, ask a local about this one, I still haven't played it. #13 is a fun downhill shot and the best ace run on the course when it's in A, #14 is a tester back up the same hill and though an opening in a fence line, the C pin for this one is way back behind the unoccupied house you see from the tee. #15 is the signature hole, a big air downhill over the creek to a protected pin. This one should make most folks 'favorite holes' list. Don't come up short and left or you'll be hunting (again). #16 -18 are some fairly tight woods holes that take you back to the parking lot.

Cons:

Tees are mostly natural but that situation is improving. The park has policy against permanent structures (concrete) but the locals are working to get fly pads installed, thanks in large part to a generous donation by a certain local.

The rough is just that and worse, it's just brutal in places. I take out a few 'precious' disc discs and replace them with more expendable plastic before I play here. The routing on #1-5 is what I'd call awkward. Like I said you backtrack to the #2 tee, then over to the back of the park for a loop comprised of #3-5, then back toward the front to the #6 tee located not far from the #2 pin. The flow is fine from #6 on.

Other Thoughts:

The extreme rough is what keeps me from loving this course, but then again that's due in a large part to my inability to keep it on the fairway. This is a course where I expect your score could improve significantly after aquiring some 'local knowledge'. I expect that this course will produce some top players because they'll either learn accuracy or quit the game;-) It is also only 5 minutes off I-95 just south of Baltimore, so if you're heading by this way and have some time and your discs (including some spares;-) you really owe it to yourself to hit this one up.

Pros:

- Good variety of holes
- Nice layout
- Multiple pin positions

Cons:

- Tees are ruts in the dirt
- Terrible hole layout maps

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course. The course I learned on and play very regularly. The one thing that would make it one of the best would be actual tee pads (rubber or concrete). I haven't found the poison ivy to be as bad as others. There is a lot of Virginia Creeper (which is very frequently mistaken for poison ivy)

Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice course. Nice variety of challenges, scenery, and elevations. Multiple basket locations an added bonus to keep playing fresh.

Cons:

Can be difficult to find your way around the first time, especially with multiple basket locations that are hidden from sight at the tee-box.

Other Thoughts:

Played here on a business trip to Baltimore. I some trouble finding baskets without a course map since there are several you can not see from the tee box. There were a few tee boxes that were difficult to find as well. I did a lot of extra walking around until another solo player from the area caught up to me and we finished the course together. With a guide the rest of the way, I was able to enjoy everything this course had to offer and if I'm ever in the area again will make sure to stop by for a round or two. Easier navigation would probably add a point or more to my score. As is I still gave a 3.5 - "Very Good."

Long and confusing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Loved the layout and it is in great shape.

Cons:

Finding tee boxes and baskets was the worst.

Other Thoughts:

Whoever maintains this course please update maps and add more/better signs for better course maneuverability. This was its biggest drawback.
