The white course set up flows very well. Hole 10 begins at the parking lot so one could play a quick 9 on the front or the back. The course uses the environment to it's favor greatly. There is plenty of elevation change (it reminds me of some of the courses in the mountains here in NC), the creek is used well on the back 9, the rocks are used well on the front 9, and the fairways are tight but fair for the most part. The blue tees are more than just longer looks at the same fairway and are very challenging. For the most part it works (I'm looking at you #9). The red tees are made for beginners and seem appropriate for that use. The tees are natural but are level except for some of the blue tees which could still use some work. The tees on the whites which are boxed in are actually really good pads. In fact I think I might favor them over a lot of the concrete pads I've played. The front 9 favors left to right shots while the back 9 plays more to straight shots and right to left so it balances out.

Other pros include benches/boulders to sit on at every white tee, trash cans at 6, 10, and 14, navigation is made easy by plenty of signage, the front 9 tee signs are very useful (the back 9 are temporary), and there is plenty of parking especially when school is out.

Favorite holes are #11 from the white tee and #14 from either the blue or white tee.

The biggest problem I have with this course is the flow of some of the blue tees. There is a lot of back tracking. It would be OK if this only happened once or twice, I expect a little extra walking when I play the blue tees. There just seems to be so much of it with the way the blue tees are arranged. The good news is that the tees are still dirt and modifications can be made to improve flow more easily than if they were concrete.

Not really a "con so much as just weird is the blue tee arrangement for #13 and #14 where you throw both tee shots from the top of the hill back to back to avoid walking back up the hill. A sign there letting people know would be helpful.

Also blue #12 crosses #11 fairway, which isn't bad until the course gets crowded.

There are only a couple of holes on the course, either white or blue tees, that let you use a driver other than throwing an overhead shot since the course is so tight. Not too much a "con" for me since I like wooded, technical type courses.

The red tees seem to suffer from being shortened and straightened out too much. There are a few left to right shots but there are no real right to left shots from the red tees. Again, easily fixed since they are dirt tees and can be easily moved.

This is a new course so it needs some foot traffic to help keep the undergrowth down. Also since it's heavily wooded there are plenty of ticks to go around during the warmer months. It is a very scenic course and aside from a couple of hiccups on the blue tees and the red tees the course very well designed.

Also the little serpents at most of the tee pads and the large concrete sea serpent at the white tee for #5 are nice touches.

Gorgeous land. Situated in shady, NC woods with running elevation, a picturesque creek, and studded with moss covered boulders amongst this idyllic course. Three sets of tees with cute little gargoyle statues denoting the tee at the white tees. Nice tees signs at the whites as well that describe the hole completely, even including elevation change in footage which is an almost perk, credit to the designers. All of the white tees had nice benches and if they didn't there were usually nice boulders to sit on.

The course flows really well from the whites. The elevation change and landscape is used quite well, you really feel like you are some place special, like in the mountains a bit. A lot of thought went into this course in the way of steps, tee boxes, and erosion prevention which is awesome and a credit to the designers as well.

UPDATE: A lot of improvement since I last played here, the fairways are defined now and the blues and white tees, while natural, are in very good shape. The only cons I have are really pet peeves. One is no concrete tees, boo hoo I know. The other is I wish there were steps cut directly to hole 13 so you didn't have to go the long way that puts you in front of hole 18.

Okay, here is where I get unflattering and get dinged with thumbs down. The course seemed to be designed from the white (middle) tees first and then the shorts and longs squeezed around them. A huge example of this are holes 13 & 14 from the blues, more or less right beside each other and both play downhill. Our guide had us tee off from both at the same time to avoid an unnecessary walk back uphill. The reds (shorts) are so short and placed so dumb on occasion that they're practically worthless IMO. The blues (longs) are not as bad but more often than not they're so filled with early trouble and non-existent lines that I wouldn't bother with'em. I met a local guy named Mike who was nice enough to play with me from the blues and on more than one occasion, he opted for an OH shot through the woods instead of bothering navigating the "fairway." A few goofy long walks b/w blue tees as well.

I'm not crazy about the mando location on that one hole (hole 4 I think). You pretty much have to skip something either with a thumber or FH (for a righty) to get around it to have a decent putt, especially from the blue tee. A mando placed on the light ash looking tree right before it would have been a lot better and allowed for a RHBH anny or turnover option that has a prayer of working.

Bring bug spray, the ticks are hungry.

Fave/signature hole: Probably hole 14. Awesome hole from blue and white tees that has a fairway wide enough that you can actually air one out and if you hit a tree you won't be SOL automatically. It might have more late trouble than necessary but easy to overlook, due in large part to the beautiful creek on the right. This hole is what the designers should use as an example for the others.

This course reminds me a lot of two particular courses. The now extinct Brackett's Bluff and Highland Hills.

UPDATE: This is a very good course now. With the addition of nearby Sasquatch, Roxboro is now worth a small roadtrip IMO. Rockness has gotten much needed smoothing out and is just a good fun course from the whites (didn't have time to play the blues). Kudos to Dave and whomever put in work out there, you guys are doing great.

UPDATE 4/26/20: This a 27 hole course now and hole 21 has one of the most scenic greens you'll ever see (also a great hole overall). There are harder courses but Rockness is so much fun. The 5 additional letter holes are a nice touch, though I'm not sure how I feel about the two holes with fence obstacles. Finding all the holes ain't exactly easy but signage is decent.

First off let me go ahead and state that I study horticulture at NC STATE; I am entralled with plants, wildlife, and interesting landscapes. That being said, many of you will understand why I rated the monster this well. We pulled up into the college and seen the absolute biggest tom turkey (gobbler) that I have ever seen in my life! That got me riled up pretty big, and by the time I seen the basket placement on Hole#3 I nutted myself.. This course utilizes the native landscape so well!! Orgasm (amazing native landscaped) holes for me were #3,4,5,8,11,12 simply because the owner of this course made sure that an extra landscape perk was incorporated. Like the island green on #11, its really a peninsula but still very hazardous! Getting that out of the way I will give other reasons why this course stacks up to a 4.5 (in my opinion)
Amenities- Some of the best signs on the front nine I have yet to see. Like the media shows they give distances, elevation, etc. I love the names on the front nine, they get kind of random and cheesy on the back
Lines- First off let me say this is most defiantly the tightest dg course that I have currently played. Ive played some super tight courses (ie Simple Pleasures, Sugaree, Buckhorn, Valley Springs) and none of these even come close to the severity of fairway width. Like most people will complain about this place being to tight, if you dont beileve me just bring your happy butt out here. I personally like the challenge, I prefer woods golf over field golf. While most RHBH players will really be scratching their head on the front nine, they can still pull out a flippy disc and sneak through the very an-hyzer friendly front nine.
The back nine offers more hyzers for these players but still you will want ultra-ultra precision
Greens- Like I have previously alluded to the Rockness Monster has some of the most ahhmazing greens I have played on. They dont quite stack up to Sugaree DGC's greens, but come very close on holes 3,4,5. Other holes have an extremly steep slope behind the basket and rollaways are everywhere out here. The brand new DISCatchers stand out really well in the woods because on many holes you cannot see the basket from the teebox

You can tell this place is relatively new, most "fairways" are full of holes, roots, stumps, and sticks that trip you up. I put "fairways" in quotes for one reason..Im all about tight woods golf, I love it; However, if you are going to have a 385' uphill dogleg right that is so super tight it really should be a par 4 dont you think? No major complaints, I like the challenge
Some of the natural teepads are un-level and have occasional roots in the way. Watch your footing on white teepads on holes 8,10,13-18. I bet this minor issue will only get better with time.
Being a plant nerd, I can see this place being very bug-infested on a hot summer day. We played in the spring as the plants were just budding out, one member of the group still found a tick on him.
With these three minor issues in mind, this course stacks up to 4.25 to me. Being the nature guru and loving this course for its scenery I am rounding up to 4.5

Being the designer of a relatively new course I only see the Monster getting even more epic with time. Maybe level some more of the teepads and cut down just a few more trees mid-fairway and I will rate this course a 5

-Incredible use of natural surroundings and elevation. Best i've ever seen. Makes it that much more enjoyable.
-3 tee options - wonderful for beginners to advanced
-Alternate basket locations (6 holes - 3 front, 3 back)
-Great tee signs
-Bridges and stairs where needed.
-Benches on almost every hole.
-Love the option to play just the front or back individually and finish where you started.
-A superb mix of heizer/anheizer, elevation changes and distance.

The course has made big changes in the last year.

-tee pads are awesome. all white's, blues and most oranges have tee pads. though the tee pads aren't "concrete" i think it matches the surroundings much better. they're level and large. just what you need.
-alternate baskets are permanent. makes for a great playing option so you can choose what to play.
-fairways are almost perfect. everytime i play they're cleared, well defined and easy to navigate. great clearing work for blue pad lines.

-little bit of a trek between some of the holes

Rockness is awesome. It's a very well thought out course. From the individual front/back 9 play to the great mix of heizer/anhezier, elevation, distance and difficulty. One of the prettiest courses you'll play. Blues are rough and I think would challenge most pros. If it's not on your must play list, you're missing out.

Great use of elevation and natural rock formations.

Beautiful terrain and scenery.

Lots of fun. There are some narrrow windows but the fairways are not impossible like many other heavily wooded courses. The terrain and angles make you think wisely about your shot.

The course is a work in progress, just barely a year old when I played it. The signs need to be better, but the ones that seem to be completed were amazing. Once the course gets recognized for being as great as it is, and more foot traffic/volunteer work happens, this place will be a destination spot for golfers around the region.

Great job, this is going to be a top notch course very soon. Lots of thanks to all that put in the hard work to make the course.

The Island shot was so beautiful. So much great landscape.
This course has got some great shots and a very challanging wooded landscape.
I rate this a 4/5 because I know its new but when it gets pads and complete single signage it will be an amazing course. Better than Valley Springs, better than Cedar Hills, better than most of the courses in the Raleigh/Durham area. My hope is when they get done with this park and Edmund's Park gets done in the Spring/Summer there could be a 2day tourney with these to opposite, but stellar courses.

The terrain was a big pro - tons of varied elevation, many valley shots and pins that had high risk/reward based position.

Other then blue #1, the course plays through a very secluded area of the forest.

The course was, aesthetically, very clean and appealing- signs signifying mandos, next tee signs (which are on the underside of the basket cage) and colored posts/"Rockness Monsters" (stone serpents colored by the associated tee) add to the positive experience of the course.

Signage is in the form of printouts in laminate insets, but this is due to the course being matured (#2 blue pins has already changed tee locations from the original pictures/listing) and would assume after the additional 9 holes, signage would get some permanency. That said, they are very informative - length, elevation change and fairway mapping. Signs for all tees are located at the white/intermediate tees.

Really enjoyed the utilization of rock formations on some of the pin areas (examples are #3 and #5)

As other reviewers have stated, for a RHBH, it is anhyzer friendly. Perhaps the additional 9 holes (which are in development) will even this out.

While, this can be viewed as a positive, the lack of traffic through the course effects the fairways and some tee areas (especially the blues), since there is some overgrowth in fairways.

While concrete teepads in my mind aren't a necessity, I found some of the blue tee pads either to be too short or extremely rooted.

Extremely buggy - many bees around #1, spider webs, ticks throughout and the open field that #2 and #9 utilize has an incredible amount of crickets. We played in July, hence the increased insect/arthropod presence, and cannot be controlled - but still is not a positive.

#9 blue is just a dumb hole - reminds me of blue #16 at Buckhorn - shoot 100' and hard left.

Blue tees cause some crossing fairway issues on the early holes and #2 and #9 (all tee pads) utilize the same open field - which could cause crossing fairway problems - but traffic at the course seems minimal, so should present no issue.

This course reminded me of Fox Chase (and more like Leonard Park in NY) with the varied and extreme terrain - you'll get a workout.

If you stray from the fairway, the woods are dense and clean outs can be difficult.

I am really looking forward to seeing this course in it's completed 18 holes.
From a Raleigh perspective, this is definitely worth the trip to experience - especially if you are a
(RHFH or LHBH).

The course needs some maturity, but seems to be like a great stop in between Danville and Raleigh/Durham.

Hole design and natural features are the key to this course. Brand new baskets and 9-hole course on a local community college campus. Looks like there is plans to complete a full 18-hole course in time.

Three tee pads for each hole, and one basket position. This makes this an easy course to navigate and play. No searching around for multiple baskets. Basic signs at the white pad for each hole. Course is new so signs are just paper print outs in a plastic sleeve.

Hole shapes and designs are very good. Each hole forces you to make a certain shot, and the natural landscapes are used very well. There are tight holes, holes that play up hill, down hill, and a few holes that use the existing rock formations for cool basket placements. There is also excellent use of elevation throughout the course. Just sweet downhills, and punishing ups.

The three tee pads are designed well throughout. Sometimes they add length to the hole, and other times they add completely different angles and lines to the basket. Several of the blues are as challenging as holes you run into at places like Iron Hill, Nockamixon or Nevin. They are some tough, tight shots.

While there is some punishing holes from the blue tees, there is also enough birdie opportunities to keep you having fun.

Mostly wooded technical course, but there is a couple holes, 2 and 9, that let you open it up a little.

Very cool little Rockness Monster statues at most holes. Unique and very cool.

It is only 9 holes. Tee pads are natural, and pretty rough right now. Signage is very basic.

Course is vey new so many of the cons will probably get worked out over time. The design seems top notch so let's just hope there is enough help to clear some fairways, add signs and pads, and keep up the maintenance. If you don't like woodsy natural courses this one is not for you right now. It definitely has the brand new course feel. Fairways are mostly cleared and fair, but there are some stumps and undergrowth still around.

When this course is complete and beat in a little it has the chance to be very, very good. There are multiple holes right now that are nice technical holes ending up on hills and have basket positions located in a cluster of large boulders. Roll aways and risk are ever present. Even the basic Hole #1 has a basket position on a fast hill side. My Fuse ended up all the way at the bottom on my drive, and I've never seen my Fuse roll.

This is one of the best 9-hole courses I have played as far as design and hole quality goes. Hopefully pads and signs will get added, and this course can become a destination course for those of us in Eastern NC. If you are near Roxboro make sure you get to the Monster.

FEB 2012 UPDATE - Course is now a full 18 holes. The new back nine plays just as good, if not better than the front nine. Great use of elevation and some very fun lines to hit and holes to play. Fairways are cleared pretty well for a new course. Some of the long tees are a work in progress, and signs are still rough, but it plays great. Once decent pads are installed and signs are in this will be a top notch course. A must play if you are any where close. This appears to be this part of the State's Fox Chase.

Highly technical pin placements, lots of woods and narrow alleys throughout. The blue pin positions are truly very long in most cases and are legitimate par 4's. The elevation changes are pretty extreme with beautiful views. Clear signage and indication of next tee.

Anhyzer heavy, get ready for a lot of flicks if you are a righty. Very few open holes, there is only one, 2 if you count the red tees. Not enough other players, it is a ghost town. I guess that could be a pro, but I wish there were more people checking it out.

It is clear that the designer wants this course to be a tournament ready course. Rockness Monster is a great name and will stand out in the listings. This is a new course, so the amenities will come with time, like benches and trash cans. The signage is sufficient, but will need to be improved. In all, I absolutely love this course. Very excited to see a 'real' course in my hometown, finally. I am there most sunday afternoons, come play with me! Wait that sounded weird, you know what I mean.

Obstacles: The course is heavily wooded, so precision is essential. Lots of risk-reward shots.
Balance: Nice assortment and arrangement of different skill-level tees and elevations.
Elevation changes. Up. Down. Up. Down. You can't go wrong here. Hiking boots and oxygen for the weary!
Decisions, decisions. Many holes require a plan off the tee; try a forehand or hard anny? or work a RHBH through a small window? A thinking player's course.
Tee signs! I've seen the mock-ups. They ROCK.

UPDATE (3/20/12): I love that Dave enjoys feedback on the course. The front 9, because they are pretty much set, are great by themselves. The blue tees are brutal, but in such a good challenging disc golf way. The addition of trash cans, benches, and framed tee boxes on several holes has this course on its way to hosting championship events.

Lefty-heavy. Especially from the white tees, the primary hole setup seems to be dogleg right, meaning big annys, precise forehands, understable discs, or turnover attempts. On a few holes, you can find a challenging RHBH throw to try.
Needs more clearing. Paths between holes are occasionally long and not completely cleared.
Amenities. Since the course is new, I wasn't expecting benches and trash cans. I feel confident they will come.

UPDATE (3/20/12): The long basket positions on #4 and 5 from the blue tees are just brutal. My brother and I couldn't finish our round last week because it was getting late and we were exhausted. The back 9 needs work. #10 blue has no real path, #14 blue needs more thought, and #17 blue has no real line either.

I really like this course so far. I know it is new, and all 18 holes aren't complete. However, I am confident that, with continued regular use and additional improvements, this course will be quite challenging, and refreshing, for the area. I enjoyed playing the whites and blues!

UPDATE (3/20/12): I updated my rating to a 4, with the potential for further improvement. I love the whites and blues on the front 9. Congrats to Dave on all his hard work on the course; I look forward to helping the course get better, and to getting more traffic!
