Fun Forest Golf for Those with Bright Discs and Deet

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a beautiful park by the Columbia River with nice views and good amenities for pre or post round or for other travelers who may be along on the trip.

Serviceable DGA baskets, concrete tee pads, and signs intact on most holes (at least two holes had a drawing of the hole map and distance marked on the wooden pole that formerly held the tee sign). The flow of the course was easy to follow and I played it without a course map or the use of an app.

Good use of elevation changes and a variety of shot shapes required to score well. Most of the holes are fairly short, but require precise lines to be hit from the tee. There are a couple of longer holes that require wise placement of a drive and a good approach to get at 3 (at least for those without significant power). This is fun forest golf.

The course plays into the woods on hole one from an open tee area to a basket surrounded by trees and then stays in the woods for the duration of the course. Greenery abounds and the trees and ferns create a peaceful setting and a fun place to be for a hike with disc tossing as part of the experience.

Cons:

The forest is dense and there is significant undergrowth. Also, there are several blind tee shots. This creates a perfect combination for lost discs. I suggest brightly-colored discs and using a spotter, if possible.

I played in June at dusk and the bugs were definitely a problem. It was like Coachella for Mosquitoes out there. They were super pumped to be in attendance and my blood was being super pumped by them. The time of year and time of day certainly might make a difference, but I suggest bringing bug spray.

Some of the walks between holes and also some fairways present challenging slopes to navigate. The course is definitely not cart friendly and won't be enjoyed by anyone who has trouble finding footing on hills. At the time I played, it was also very muddy, which magnified these problems. Keep this in mind when deciding who will play and what to bring.

Other Thoughts:

$5 daily parking fee or Oregon State Parks pass required. One other 9-hole course in the same park.

I liked this course a lot. The experience of being in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, looking out over the Columbia River, and throwing some challenging lines through the trees was good for me. But that's a kind of golf that I like and it isn't for everyone. If you choose to play here, orange discs, pink discs, and Deet will be your best friends that day!

Interesting course in a Interesting setting 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 8, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Rooster Rock East is a fun crazy course that plays in the Columbia River George. This course terrain's itself through the woods with some holes you would not believe are holes. Amazing views on the first hole of the east side. This is one of the nine hole course's at rooster rock. Although this course is not one of my favorites it is one I thought was insane. Hole 1 is a fun little shot right into the woods. Hole 2 reminds me of the Canyon course at Horning's Hideout. This hole is in the woods and so do the rest of the holes. The pictures look a little old or they were just taken in the winter. Nice variety of shots through out the course with some ace opps.

This course is insane. Ace it or loose it is a term I would describe it. One of my favorite hole is Hole 4. Basically a jump put but not much to it but the elevation change. The pictures don't show how overgrown it is because now it is like a mess. My brother actually found a disc while he was looking for his on a cliff. Just about every hole is blind. Some of the holes you have to walk the whole hole just to see where the basket is. Hole 7 is a canyon hole. Forecady is recommended now that the course is overgrown.

Some of the Holes here are massive. Hole 8 traverses its way through a walking trail. I had to walk the whole hole just to see where the basket was tucked around in a little corner. Impossible to be a par 3 unless you are a magician.

Hole 9 is a straight away shot that play's through the woods on the side of a cliff. Not a actual cliff but a very steep hill. The pictures were taken in the winter because all the blackberry's were destroyed by the cold weather. In the summer I'm sure they will grown back. Mach 5 baskets as well as concrete tee pads get the job done. I want them to put in tee sign's especially on hole 8 which traverses its way through a walking trail.

Cons:

This course is overgrown. blackberry bushes upon blackberry bushes. I definitely would recommend the other side to any person that is new. That is because you are almost sure to loose a disc if you play in the summer.

Some holes need to be rerouted especially number 8. Various pin locations's on that hole but just as it looks in the pictures that hole is crazy in the summer. All the holes on this course except number 1 are easily to loose a disc. To have someone spot your disc makes it so much more enjoyable.

On hole 4 this hole plays's super downhill just as downhill as it looks. Putter is really the play on this hole. Anything above that is gone.

Other Thoughts:

Rooster Rock East has some potential but a ton of clearing needs to be done. I would like to see them either reroute this course or to clear a bunch of junk it. I would like to play the west course again if I had to play on this property but that is my preference.

Course needs some work though. Although this course is in a great setting i would like to see them add more or change it up a bit. If I would describe how this course is I would say INSANE.

Pros:

The east side is hard to put in words! it starts with a pretty fun par 4 that is open most the way then tucks around 100 feet into a tight wooded window. This is the most open part as the rest of the course all plays in the woods Oregon golf at its finest. It has some very fun holes that are memorable and signature type holes. Holes 3-6 our all well done holes. It will have you throw every kind of shot from overhand to forehand and backhand. Even the short 100 and something foot holes our fun because if you miss your line recovery might be tough. Navigation is easy to follow as courses flow is pretty simple to understand. Tee pads and baskets were in decent shape.

Cons:

Some of the distances seemed off from what was listed... now the course itself hole 8 is a nightmare and if you go off the left side you're going to be looking for awhile. A couple of the holes have a straight throw and hope type feeling. Spotters are for sure recommended on most the holes the rough is pretty rough.

Other Thoughts:

All in all I like this style of disc golf, but a couple more lines our really needed on this course. It could use some work for sure and even player trafficking knocking down some of the rough. It's really closer to a 2.75 rating for me but with more play and upkeep it would be a solid 3! When paired with the west course it can be a fun day of golf and 18 holes. 5$ for parking

A rollercoaster of a course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Trees, I love me some trees, and there's some good ones.
*Elevation, ups, downs, ups and downs.....
*Easy navigation
*Seclusion
*# 4 is a great Top of the World putter shot, i'm not a huge fan of walking uphill, but I get a smile on my face ever time i'm on the walk out (or walk up...) from 3 to 4...
*This course MAKES you hit lines, and slaps you around if you miss...

Cons:

* # 3.... Some people think the idea of hitting a six-foot window is fun, I'm not one of them. Oh, and if you do hit the window (emphasis on IF), the fun has just begun, you get to deal with a low, narrow tunnel to a protected pin.... Just take your four or five and walk up the hill...
*Seclusion.... I know I listed this as a Pro, but for some reason, I get a real weird feeling if I'm playing hear alone, like I'm constantly looking over my shoulder. Maybe its the fact that its so close to the highway or so close to the nude beach (both seem to be magnets for sketchy characters...)
* Holes 5 and 6 are WAY too short, 6 especially, I think its 120'....
*Lots of stinging nettles and other "mean" plants off the fairway, and believe me, more likely than not, you WILL end up there....

Other Thoughts:

This course is such a torrid affair for me. Love, hate, love, hate, throughout the round. It is definitely unique, and there are some real gems in there (#4, #7, #8) but # 3 is so ridiculous, and 6 is pretty lame. Coupled with the fact that the rough is so ROUGH, this course usually leaves me feeling angry.

To get to the course, just turn right after the pay station. Park at the end of that road. The first tee is right off the southeast corner of that lot. The first hole goes across the field, and into the trees. From there, the flow is pretty intuitive. Just keep in mind that after #3, you walk up the hill.....

Mix of Fun and Frustration 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 13, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course was fairly navigable without a map. The flow through the woods is kind of fun. The fourth hole is is a great shot straight down off a small cliff. Do you throw a thumber straight down? Risk a lofting forehand? Kind of cool.

Cons:

Not beginner friendly at all (my friends brought me here two years ago for my second or third round ever, not cool!). Some of the holes have tunnel or window shots that really aren't reasonable. Can you throw 300 feet through a 5-foot gap with no fade at all? If not, there are a couple holes that may be more annoying than fun, especially when you are trying to throw an escape shot from 25 feet off the fairway. Signs would be helpful; I had to walk down the paths to see where the basket was before teeing off. Also, Rooster Rock feels a bit like a rest area, and there was some rest area creepiness there. Definitely some clientele in the parking lot that didn't seem to be up to any good, and I was leery of leaving my car unattended.

Other Thoughts:

The fun factor here varies by the hole. I like wooded, technical courses a lot, even when I'm not that great at them. Holes 4 and 5 are pretty fun, and a few others were cool. But if there is a gap you wouldn't want to try to ride your bike through, it's probably not a "fair" fairway. Unlike Rooster Rock West, this course is worth going out of your way for, but expect a high level of randomness to come into play.
