My First GA DG Experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-It has baskets
-It has tees
-Great place to practice distance drive accuracy

Cons:

-Tee pads are way too short.
-Tee signs can be confusing at times.
-Many holes presented little to no challenge

Other Thoughts:

To be fair, I played 2 courses this day and the first was an absolute gem, so this old girl had a lot to live up to. When I say old, I mean OLD. The baskets are the second oldest I have ever played. To be fair, they still catch discs, but their best years are obviously behind them.

The tee boxes are way too short for a long distance bomber course. With so many long distance goals, you really needed at least 8 ft tee boxes to get a good approach to the drive. Most of these seemed to be more like 5-6ft long.

I did enjoy letting some drives fly, and this course definitely promotes it, but pars are super easy to come by. I was playing very badly and I only got one bogey all day. My play deserved many more bogeys than I got.

I appears the locals have done the best with what they were given to try to add teeth to the course, but it just is not there. I was confused by some holes that had multiple baskets. There did not seem to be much rhyme or reason to them.

If you want to go to a course that allows you to chuck plastic in a carefree manner, then Rose Lane is the place for you. I normally love such courses, but the lack of real hazard combined with the disappointing tee pads really holds this course back. With a remodel including tee pads, new baskets, and some strategic shrubbery/trees, this course would have more potential. But I know money doesn't grow on trees, so I guess this rose will remain a memory lane.

Excellent course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very nice well kept course with lots of shot variations. Hole 3 features a bomb from a huge hill. Hole 7 is a nice ridge shot. 9 is a beautiful cypress lined alley. 11 is a cool hazer over a cart path into s wooded pathway. Hole 14 is a tight gem through a wooded tunnel to a touchy pin placement. Hole17 is a 700 ft. Bomb.18 is a great finisher hole.

Cons:

The walk back is a little long but hey we are here for the exercise. Not really much of an issue.

Other Thoughts:

Long tees and alt. Pin placements offer good variety for a different playing experience.

My home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The biggest thing this course has going for it is that the recreation department just hired a new director who's already been working with them for years. He knows the community well and has a good sense for how the park's disc golf course can stand out as either an eye sore or a smalltown gem. He's very serious about making course upkeep consistent and effective, and is doing an excellent job. I actually played two rounds today since I was off work - one in the morning and one in the evening. In the several hours between rounds, the fairways got a fresh cut (already in decent shape, but now looking excellent), trees were limbed up and fairway debris was cleared, and some bad brush on Hole 2 was completely eradicated. The course looks better than it has in years.

Pretty decent variety here: straight and left/right doglegs, uphill and downhill holes, short and long, challenging and forgiving, etc.

Free, and open all day long. Can't beat that.

With the exception of a couple recently relocated ones, all the tees are concrete pads. Most of them stay pretty clean and clear.

Laid-back feel. Local interest in disc golf is picking up, which is obviously a plus, but it's still easy to play through the course as quickly or as slowly as you like. Not often do you have to step aside to let a faster group play through, or speed up your game to move past someone because you've caught up to them.

Cons:

Most of the time when I'm playing a round, I'm in no hurry at all, so I don't mind the long walk from Basket 18 back to the practice basket where we usually park. But I do get that a lot of people find it inconvenient.

Other Thoughts:

This is probably the course I've played the most, and it's about a mile and a half from my house, so I definitely get my fill of it. I love having it close by whenever I want to get out and play a round, whether fast or slow. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-out-of-5 rating is because a couple tee pads could be spruced up and there are a couple tees that may take a couple minutes for someone unfamiliar with the course to find.

Come play! I doubt you'll be disappointed!

Enjoy the ride with Rose Lane ;) 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 6, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Note: Rose Lane is an uber driver. She's going to drive you around a memorable, but crazy route.

-Rose Lane. She's mighty fine. She's appealing, she's forgiving, she's sincere, and she's fun to be around. She's all around a great lady! Hold on tight and enjoy the scenery.

-She gets you to see what you love here. The holes are for the most part great and fun to play. The first two holes are both pretty good holes. But hole 3 is an outstanding "top of the world" shot. It's a 469' par 3 that I can reach with a mid-range. It has a few par 4's if you play the long pins. #17 is a beast of a par 4 from the long. It's a 733' par 4 with a thorny ditch in play for most of the way. The short pin is great too! It's a long par 3 with a basket on a hill.

-Great variety in fairways here. You step in the car and just let her drive. She goes straight, she goes left, and she goes right. Now on some holes she lets you choose which way she takes you. Holes 10, 11, 15, 16, and 17 have two pin positions and they change the fairways a little. Hole 10 has a left pin and a right pin. She knows the road less traveled by, but she lets you decide. #11 is a slightly downhill par 3 from the short pin that plays over a small ditch. The long pin plays about 485' and as a dogleg left. #15 has a short pin to the left on the side of a hill. Hole is a blind shot downhill to the short, but the long pin is 327' straight ahead. She's driving fast! She'll drive down that curve going 70 mph like nothing, or she'll drive you down straight ahead. #16 is another location preference hole. You either like a 402' bomb down and through a meadow, or a 237' flick around a meadow. #17 is like a busy highway where Rose eventually makes a U turn. But there's two U turns and she'll take the first one where there's more traffic, or the second one which is almost at a dead end.

-She gives options on what pads to play too. She'll drive you to a pad and offers if you want to stop further away or closer to the pin on hole 2. It's 264' from the short and 321' from the long. But same look to the hole. But #8 is different from each look. The long pad offers a straight and less intimidating shot, but is longer. The short pad is a difficult flick around the trees. I played the long pad, and it was worth it, as I got a birdie, and was as sweet as strawberry jam.

-She's not afraid to go on those backroads either. For instance hole 14. It's a short hole at 177' but it's NARROW. Very tight and dangerous the whole way there. I threw my warden and it slid past the basket and into the deep woods. I barely saved par on this one. This hole is sketchy like hwy 441. She also drives you through a dark alley on #9. But it's another quick one, as the hole is only 237' and downhill. Both holes are intimidating, but they are both great, and leave you loving Rose even more.

-The elevation changes are significant here and there. Holes 2-6 all show that with good elevation changes that make the holes more different. She doesn't like it too flat.

-There is a practice basket by the parking lot.

-There are tee-signs that state the shape of the fairway, and the distances of the holes. Good enough for me. And it's easy to navigate. You know where Rose is taking you next.

Cons:

-Some holes are a bit crammed in and play a bit too close to each other. Holes 5 and 6 are very close. Rose will take you down and back up a one lane road down then back up a steep hill. Holes 11 and 12 are also very close. Especially the approach shot on 11's long pin and 12's fairway. Always danger on driving down a one lane road.

-Holes 7 and 13. #7 is very close to the walking trail, and the basket has a dropoff, which increase the risk in you going by the road or fenced field. She drove us down the road during a street racing event. And Rose and I got stuck in a traffic jam on #13. It's a 335' uphill tweener. It's past a tree with hanging branches that force Rose to stomp on the brake at an approaching red light, and she pulled over into the woods when I played this hole. Basically saying the limbs will knock down you disc and potentially kick it into the woods to the right. We were left stuck in the woods while the tree wrote Rose a speeding ticket.

-You have to meet Rose all the way down the parking lot, past the practice basket, and meet her by the dog park. And she drops you off at the parking lot you first see. So if you did not park there, she'll make you walk a bit of a distance back to where you park. Hole 1 and 18 end far away from each other.

Other Thoughts:

-I loved Rose Lane. She was something special! I didn't want to leave her, but I had to. But the great thing is that she's free all the time, and will drive you around as many times as you like. My favorite part of the ride was when she drove me straight down the top of the world (#3 is my favorite hole.) I also loved the drive down the alley (#9) and the scary ride down the narrow road on the side of a mountain (#14). There were a couple of parts to the ride where I was like "Whoa! Slow down!" But for the most part, the views were awesome and the layout was great!

-The course is really a 4. The hole quality is above average. And I'll ride through it with Rose again and see if the roads will be better paved next time. Because it's a little bit rough right now with the tall grass. Looking forward to seeing her again.

-Signature holes:
Hole 3. Awesome top of the world shot. A beautiful one too!
Hole 5. Neat straight downhill flick shot ace run out of the woods.
Hole 9. Very cool tunnel shot between two rows of trees.
Hole 12. Another great tight hole.
Hole 14. Super fun ace run down a <10' fairway and along a sloping hill.
Hole 15. Beautiful shot through a gape with two pins
Hole 16. A great meadow hole that is a flick ace run, or a 400' bomb into the woods.
Hole 17. A truly fun bomber hole!

-Make plenty of time to play this course. It is great! I see that holes were changed pretty recently. I think you'll love Rosie!

Rose Lane DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has practice basket

Has concrete tee pads (except for hole #6 where I couldn't find one)

Holes #2 and 8 have two tee pads

Has tee signs

Has many benches throughout course

Good mix of open/wooded fairways with doglegs and elevations

Water comes into play on hole #1 but the creek is shallow enough where it's not really a factor in losing a disc

Holes #10, 11, 15, 16, and 17 have two baskets each

Quiet - had whole course to myself on a Saturday afternoon

Free parking - but it's a walk to the first tee and from last basket

Restrooms

Cons:

Needs next tee signs at some baskets

Most tee pads are on the short side with some not being level and flush with the ground

Long walks between the parking lot and first tee/last hole

Some holes require blind shots - recommend a spotter

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice, challenging 18 hole course in a multi-use park in Stephens County that I enjoyed playing. Since there is no course map posted at the time I played, I had trouble locating the first tee pad. After seeing the practice basket and then walking past the ball field towards the dog park, the hole #1 tee pad is visible on the opposite side of the dog park's chain link fencing. The course has a good variety of uphill, downhill, doglegs, open, and tight fairways. I could have really cared less for the dual tee pads or baskets for some of the holes but I didn't account that in my rating. As some reviewers have mentioned, the tee pads are on the short side with some not being level and flush with the ground. A couple of holes played over park roads that are apparently closed with the entrance gates being shut. Without having a course map, I had to do some extra walking to locate some next tee pads and a few basket locations as some are not visible from the tee pad. Once you find that first tee, the course flows good with some moderate walks in between holes. After finishing hole #18, there is a long walk back to the parking lot if you parked near the practice basket like I did. If I played this course again, I would probably start on hole #8 near the parking lot to avoid the post round long walk back to the car. Besides all of that, this is a very good course that i recommend playing if you're in the area.

Fun stuff! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Hole 6, a huge downhill bomb, might be one of the funnest holes I've played here in Georgia. You'll be tempted to empty your bag for sure! No doubt the signature hole, but I really liked a handful of other ones too (#12 long, for instance)
* Has a little bit of everything: a downhill bomb (6), a very narrow tunnel shot (14), holes that favor BH and FH, an uphill shot with a death-putt if you go past the basket (5), a basket on the side of a steep hill (8), and a 700-foot hole (17 long)
* "Fair" fairways. Many have trees you'll need to go around, but no holes that just have trees randomly scattered here and there throughout the fairway (a personal pet peeve playing here in Georgia). If you make a good throw, you'll be in good shape.
* Would be pretty hard to lose a disc here. The rough is a little dense in a few places, but my discs found no fields of poison ivy or impenetrable briar patches (and my discs were looking, too!). The baskets along the property line have trees protecting you from throwing over fences, too - even with my erratic play I wasn't too worried about having to say goodbye to any of my favorite discs.
* Holes 1-16 flow easily even without a map. #10's teepad is hiding behind a large tree a few feet away from #9's basket, but otherwise I had no problem till the final 2 holes
* Multiple tees and/or baskets on a few holes. Some, like 17 and 12, simply make the hole longer and a few, like 16, require completely different shots.
* Although the course is on the outskirts of various ballfields, no real issues with throws and pedestrians or game fields.
* Many holes had benches and bathrooms are near the ballfields (a little gross, but I have yet to find a park restroom that wasn't fairly disgusting)
* Concrete teepads...but see Con #1

Cons:

* The teepads are a little short, which wouldn't be that big of an issue if they were flush with the ground at the back, but a few had 2 to 3 inch drop offs - yikes! I cannot remember which one, but one of the longer holes had a 4-6 inch step-up at the back on the teepad, making it downright hazardous.
* Pars are a little wacky and definitely too charitable. Honestly, I think only #4 & long #16 (both marginally) and the long #17 should be par 4s, everything else really should be a 3. There's absolutely no reason #11, at 274 feet, should be a par 4!
* Be careful on 14 if you get off to the right - it's steeper than it seems and a great place to twist and ankle and bust your butt.
* The walk from 16 to 17 is a little confusing, but the teepad for 18, if it exists, was not apparent to me at all! Maybe it was right under my nose, but I walked around for a good 15 minutes and never found it.

Other Thoughts:

I don't think this has been directly addressed in the previous reviews, but the course has undergone a major revamping since the pictures on this website. I think maybe half the pictures reflect current holes (but the numbering has changed). The scorecards you can download here are *not correct* as far as distance, but I believe the on-course signs have been updated to reflect the new layout. Having not played the original layout, I cannot say for sure, but I suspect going from 24 holes to 18 holes was a step in the right direction. According to what I read on the Disc Golf Atlanta website, sounds like a handful of dedicated individuals have put in a lot of effort on this course, and it shows (mad props to them!)

I really enjoyed this course; I think I'm a tough grader as far as courses go, and while this course is not spectacular, I thought the layout was very good considering it is just what land was available around the existing park (I didn't roll my eyes at a single hole) and I had FUN! It is around an hours drive from Athens, so I will not be coming back on a weekly basis, but if I'm heading north, I'll "pack my bag", no doubt.

Safari hint: I got tired of looking for 18s teepad, so I hiked up the hill close to the the middle school. There's a patch of concrete with a manhole cover - although you cannot get much of a runup, throw from there - it's almost as much fun as #6!

Lastly, confirm your GPS's route by looking at a map. The park is located in one of those twilight zones where navigation systems tend to send you down fifteen little country roads to save you five miles of state highway.

Great Terrain for DG 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Rose Lane really has solid elevation which make for some really spectacular shots. Specifically the Top-of-the-world shot in hole 6.
-This park does not seem to get a lot of play, so you can expect a pretty private round.
-There are nice benches on most holes and bathrooms are located right after hole 18 on your walk back.
-With dual tees and dual baskets you can keep the beginner and the more experienced player happy.

Cons:

-While I am usually a fan of 2 tees and/or 2 baskets per hole, I was disappointed with the way it was done here. The tee signs weren't really accurate and did not have the position for both baskets on them. Since the baskets all looked the same you would have to walk up and look to see if you are throwing at basket 7 or basket 7A.
-This course plays in not quite a full circle, so you end up with a decently long walk back.
-The tees are too short.

Other Thoughts:

This was a really interesting and nice public course. The terrain out here is pretty well suited for disc golf with a large creek that comes into play on a few holes, great elevation changes, some wooded holes, and several holes that play through a nice meadow with hole 16 being a good signature hole. I would be exceptionally happy if this were my home course.
