Elder Statesman In Good Hands 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mostly wooded course but not too technical. Since its established the trees are older and out of the way, but still make you shape your shots on most holes.

It was good to see obviously new bridges, new signs, and work being done to keep the course not only playable, but better. There were new tables too and signs that groups do play and congregate here, we just didn't see any.

The people I played with had been there before & said you could definitely see the changes there for the better. They also said some afternoons after work it can be busy depending on the day.

Tee pads were all fine and didn't seem cramped as most holes aren't that long. Usually several benches at each hole as well.

Multiple pin placements & on the day we played they all seemed like they were in the longest/most difficult areas which we enjoyed

Pin placement takes advantage of the terrain on most holes and helps to keep things interesting

The feel of the course was just that of an out of the way park, tucked away and not used much, even though its well known. On the day we played we pretty much had it to ourselves and were in & out in about 75 mins.

Cons:

A little more maintenance would help, but like I mentioned you can tell the course is being taken care of. There is some debris from old bridges and some minor trash, but overall you can see signs of the caretakers.

Next tee signs are there, usually on trees, but with some of the longer pin placements you may have to backtrack on a few holes

Some type of pin placement indicator would be nice, but we walked a short distance to scout & could usually make out the baskets fairly easily.

A paint job on the baskets themselves to make them stand out more would help in this area as well.

Different areas to tee off on some of the holes where space permits, would help increase the challenge & variety

Other Thoughts:

Have been wanting to play this course for a while, but the times I've planned to make the trip, something always came up. I'm glad I finally did though as its an enjoyable course and you can see the care that's been taken to keep it up and even make things better. I will be back again now that I know what the course is like and will be interested to see any changes.

The Eastside Atlanta Staple 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.285 Rating) AKA Redan, this old school wooded and park style course has survived the test of time.
- CHALLENGING - I was expecting this course to be a heavy dose of recreational challenges. Although that is the case for many pin placements, baskets are rotated around to more challenging locations quite often with some that I'd say are Advanced level caliber. For example on my play, holes (5), (13) and (17) were all in the long placement and required 375-foot power while also shaping the drive to finish a certain way. There are several wooded holes that require veteran precision or Houdini escape maneuvers to save par. I got a mix of front, middle and back placements for my appearance here and it felt like an Intermediate level course to me. I think 900 rated players will average even par or so.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored this aspect a 3 out of 5. Once I got to hole (5), I started to fall in love with this course as the layout basically stayed in the woods the entire time. I can tell this is an older park because the wooded portions have 100 foot plus tall oaks, pines and poplars. There's also a couple mini creeks snaking around the layout too. I kind-of wish it came into play more often. I did notice a few areas of excess trash while on the course though.
- VARIETY - Mostly an all par 3 layout. A few holes in the beginning are rather open, but after (4) it's mostly technical woods play with a few park style holes mixed in. A decent amount of distance variation. There are a few sub 200-foot ace runs and several upper 300s to 400 foot bomb plays. Hole (15) I thought was the only legit par 4 and I wish it had a few more of them. As noted above, there is a small creek in play a few times and there's some modest 20 to 25-foot gentle sloping terrain on a few holes.
- NAVIGATION - Decent. The signage was probably top-of-the-line twenty years ago, but it needs to be replaced now. Several signs are faded and rusted, although a couple do look brand new. There are several large directional cues located on the layout, which helped a bunch at the few tricky spots. I did not see a course map posted anywhere onsite.
- TEE AREAS - Decent sized 4 by 12 foot concrete tees. I loved that nearly every tee had a bench to sit down at.
- FUN FACTOR - This seems like a course to experience as a group. Perfect for a wide variety of skill levels. Not cupcake and not pro level. There are birdies to be had and ace lines to stare down on some of the short placements. The harder placements will appeal to higher skilled players and typically won't be over punishing to mortals. I personally did a little searching on a couple bad ricochets, but it wasn't all doom and gloom. It's possible to lose a disc here, but more are likely left by accident than truly lost. It's not surprising to note that the course had numerous groups on it for my play on a weekday afternoon.

Cons:

Needs an amenities overhaul and that's it.
- AMENITIES AND EXTRAS - The Mach III baskets I'm guessing are the originals from 1991. Wow did they once make some hearty near indestructible baskets back then. However, this is 2020, and they need an update. As noted above regarding the signage, it needs to be replaced too. I'm also kind of miffed as too why there is not a few extra long tees on the course were space is available. Such an easy way to change the way a hole plays and to increase the course appeal. The course needs placement indicators too as several placements are blind. Could use a course map posting too.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - I'm sure new players get brought here all the time, but this is not an ideal beginner's course imo. Too many trees for them too break-in plastic on. I don't take off points for this.
- PARKING - It's a bit of a walk to tee (1) from the parking area and even further away once finishing (18).
- TIME WAITING - A very popular course to my knowledge. Be prepared to wait during prime playing times.

Other Thoughts:

There are some things I love about this course, but there are some head scratchers as well. A ratings 3.25 tweener in my book with the fun factor and overall vibe being the biggest key for me to place it on the higher end of that threshold. This really could be a solid 3.5 course if it would address the many fixable issues like signage, baskets and increased general maintenance. Among the Atlanta area courses I've played, I would not place Redan in the top tier, and perhaps not the second tier. It's not that Redan is not a good course, cause it is, it's just that Atlanta is loaded with high quality courses on sprawling beautiful landscapes. Players on their first road trip to the area should not be headed here unless they are staying here for several days. For those that live in the Atlanta metro area itself, you got to get a round in here at least once for the history aspect. For a course built in 1991, it's got to be one of the older ones in the area.
- TIME PLAY - 52 minutes for this quick solo.

Very interesting old school course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Other than the fact that the course says Redan Park Disk Golf at the entrance there is nothing to be embarrassed about here. If we are honest this is all par 3s with the exception of maybe hole 15, but a fun layout with a good assortment of woods, open shots and fairly good for players of all skill levels.

The baskets are older, I think I mach 2s but they catch okay other than the fact that a harder putt will blow through.

Nice long teepads that are grippy even if they are a bit narrow.

Cons:

Not a lot of longer holes, and the par listed on the signs is the softest I have ever seen. I played a completely forgettable round and it was -10 by those standards. I'll chose to believe it was the -3 I earned lol.

Baskets could use an update, but they aren't terrible.

The bridge over the creek was out in one place which made crossing a bit rough

Signs aren't inaccurate per se, but it's really hard to tell which placement the pin is if you can't see it from the pad.

Other Thoughts:

It's one of the older courses in Ga and still holds up well to all but the most stringent of modern standards. No PDGA majors here but a great spot for a round and to introduce newer players.

Great Course for an Ego Boost 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course starts with a handful of open holes and then transitions into the woods so there's variety.

It's a shorter course so it's good for beginners, and the wooded holes add a moderate challenge and are mostly well designed.

Hole locations are well marked and it flows pretty well.

I've seen it be a little overgrown before, but as of 3/15/19 it's nicely maintained.

Usually not too busy so you can get some privacy (except on Saturday mornings when there's league play).

Cons:

Some of the holes are missing tee signs (especially once you get into the woods), and some holes don't have numbered baskets so it can be a little confusing at points, especially on Hole 10 where it's very easy to assume that the 16th basket is the one you're aiming for since 10's basket is a bit tucked away.

There's some dense brush and thorns that could make it tricky to get your disc if you stray too far from the fairway - though I've yet to lose a disc there.

The Par 5 15th at one point had a lot of poison ivy growing by the basket but it's since been cleaned up. Just have to be wary of where you're stepping.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I think this is a fun course, and it's pretty close to where I work so I've been there about 30+ times in the past year. I'm a bit of a beginner and I've learned a lot playing through this course since I can practice my open-field drives on the first several holes, and then my precision and navigation once you get into the forest.

It might be a bit too short for more experienced players, and I know many players play the first several holes as Par 3's instead of 4's like they're listed, but some of the wooded holes require a little creativity.

Pros:

Not crowded
Easy to navigate
Signage on 16 of 18 holes
Variety of terrains
Ace runs & challenging holes
Large parking lot
Rough/out-of-bounds not disc eaters

Cons:

No signage on 2 of 18 holes
Old signs--many holes designated par 4 or 5 that "aren't."
Thorns & vines in some rough
Getting there--navigating Atlanta area

Other Thoughts:

Fun course. Ego builder even though you know better -- Course was obviously "parred" YEARS ago. It'll give beginners a good score if they use the course designations -- lots of par 4's. Only one hole on the course deserves a 4 rating, and it is currently designated as a par 5! Signage is not great, but is helpful to locate the blind baskets. A local was landscaping a bit when I was there (a tournament is scheduled for the next day), friendly and proud of "his" course! There are better maintained courses in the area, but this one is fun and a throwback to earlier days!

Nice Course, not well county-maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- course laid out very well, with a mixture of open and technical holes.
- each hole is challenging, and there are no unfair holes.
- no long walks between holes.
- map shows four possible basket locations for each hole, giving a good variety in distances and shot-shaping, keeping the course fresh.
- course not heavily trafficked, even on a beautiful Spring day.
- grass was mowed, trash was cleaned up.
- plenty of benches, even some tables at certain points.
- course is relatively flat with good footing on the paths and bridges over the creeks.
- tee boxes are concrete and in very good repair.
- this is an excellent course for first-timers to learn disc golf.

Cons:

- signage. Missing signs on several tee boxes, others vandalized or spray-painted. Virtually no sings pointing to the next tee box. A map is an absolute necessity when navigating this course.
- baskets often are not visible from the tee, and there is no indicator of which of the four positions the basket is actually at.
- although in good shape, the tee boxes are narrow, and are raised above the surrounding ground. Folks using an "x-step" to throw may have difficulty.
- the mandatory on Hole #2 needs to be marked better.
- course and park are not in the best of neighborhoods.

Other Thoughts:

The layout is very nice. The first tee is intimidating with a tunnel shot through foliage and a creek below, but once on the other side, it's all open through Hole #5, warming the player up nicely. Then it's into the woods for the technical lanes. All the lanes are fair with room to throw and shape shots.
The lack of signage is a major problem. Print out a map and bring it,. While the holes are in reasonable proximity, there are a few places where one can end up going to the wrong hole without knowing where the next hole is via a map.
When I went with my group on a weekend, we did not experience any security or safety concerns, and the park has youth leagues that are playing various sports. However, a friend went on a weekday, and was concerned about certain characters loitering in the parking lot and seemingly watching him. One should be aware of one's surroundings while in the neighborhood.
It might be a good idea to contact Dekalb County's Recreation Department and ask that some money be spent repairing signs and installing signs to mark the path to the next tee. Added to my own letter to them, it might cause them to take action to improve the course, which would be a really great thing.

Regal Redan. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

An extremely fun little course.

Solid teepads.

A very nice blend of shots, a true par 3 course that is neither extremely easy or overly challenging. It's fairly simple to shoot under par out here as long as you can throw your putters and midranges well.

Cons:

Lots of vandalism as a result of not being in the best part of town.

The baskets are old and beat up.

Other Thoughts:

This course is one of those courses for me where pro's & con's don't really jump out, but I can write in this section for a bit.

This is an old course, some of the pars for course par are listed as 4's and 5's but I think there's only a singular hole that may be a four when the pin is in its absolute longest position, and even then it may be a 3.

Although this isn't in the best area, I never felt unsafe. Previous reviewers have mentioned making sure to keep your doors locked and things of that nature, but I hope to god you do that no matter where you park your car. The area has improved since my first visit to the course with some newer construction popping up nearby.

The course has an extremely pleasant blend of shots. Some really cool holes out here. Hole #5 immediately comes to mind as one that starts out in the open and shoots into the woods with a pin placement that can definitely make you strategize off the tee on weather to gun for it or just play it smart.

The beginning of the course starts off more open until you shoot into the woods for the remainder. Due to it's short, wooded, and fun nature, this is the course I would recommend if you are in the area on a hot summer day.

Other Other Thought: There is a tee sign that has "Race War" written on it. How can you not play this course?

Home is where you hang your hat 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Multiple pin placements that a regularly shifted by course managers. It's refreshing to walk onto the course and wonder where the pin placements are this week.
- Great mix of shot requirements which change both from hole-to-hole and on the same hole depending on pin placements (long, short, open, tightly wooded, hyzer, anny, etc.)
- Course design. One of the main things I've always liked about this course is how it starts mostly open (1-5) before going into the woods on 6. It gives the player some time to get loose before escalating the challenge.
- Picnic tables and benches throughout the course.
- Bathrooms in the fields above the course and in the boyscout building near the tennis courts entrance.
- Football field above 4 is rarely in use, so it can be used for fieldwork.

Cons:

- Trash cans are almost always full/overflowing of beer cans
- Local residents sometimes randomly wandering the course
- County grounds crew destroying pin positions on early holes with the lawnmowers
- Basket visibility. You do have to walk down some of the fairways to determine where the pin is this week.
- Signage and some amenities in need of repair
- there is no disc line on the last 50ft of 12 when it is in the longest position. Great deal of luck required to get a good score in that configuration. Even thumber/tommy's are iffy.

Other Thoughts:

- This course will always be home to me. I play here weekly(minimum) and never get tired of it.
- I keep finding myself comparing other courses to it, and think it's the most balanced course in Atlanta.
- It's an older course, so it may be considered short. The longest hole is ~500ft when 15 is in the long.
- Water is in play on the side of the fairway on 6, 7, 11, 12, 15, and 16. Also across the fairway when 5 is in the long position, however the hazard level is low in all cases. The creek is pretty small.
- Hole 1 has changed significantly in the past year since the county cleared out all the shule. The tight tunnel for the first drive is now much more open, and I think it improved the quality of the course layout.

Good Ole Redan 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This place while not very close to much is a hidden gem in the middle of the hood!

*Great mix of elevation and hole placement
*Nice use of property, open and wooded areas
*Multiple lines on almost every hole for a good chance to try out different shots
*They have a somewhat functioning picnic area near the entrance/exit of the wooded section of the course.

Cons:

In kind of a bad area, I have heard of multiple cars being broken into but have not had it happen to me

The hole maps located next to the tee pads need to be replaced as it looks like they have taken on some massive water damage

Course is somewhat difficult to follow if you have never been there before as the first time we played we thought we had played a whole 18 when it was only 10 holes.

No restrooms

No water access

Other Thoughts:

Great place to play and if you want to get your grill on bring some food because the picnic area is a nice change of pace. You can actually pull your car down there and set up shop so you don't have to lug everything back and forth

Sketchy Neighborhood, Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 30, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I really like this course, most likely one of my favorite courses closest to downtown ATL.

Pros:
1) A good mix of open and treed holes.
2) Great sceanery around the park.
3) Hole 15 has to be the signature hole and is a wonderful long hole with a nice bit of shade.
4) Hole 18 is somewhat short. Everytime I've been there I've had a decent shot at birdie (although I've never made it... yet). I enjoy the last hole of this course for that reason. A fun short hole that you can honestly attempt a hole in one on.

Cons:

1) Not to be mean but the neighborhood looks somewhat bad albiet I've never had a bad thing happen there.
2) They're either relandscaping some parts or they've put in new drainage or pipe or something because there is a decent amount of dug up ground which leaves shoes dirty

Other Thoughts:

Covington Hwy during the week (and really on the weekends too but not as bad) is pretty miserable driving on to get here. I've been impressed with Redan Rd which I take immediately after I get on Covington from Memorial. My GPS took me this way and the bridge was out about 4 miles down three weeks ago. The bridge is now back up which gives you a striaght shot that is better than convington. Just my personal opinion.

**UPDATE**
Found out that they changed pin placements. First Tee shoots left now. Hole 3 shoots longer now and is next to the tree further back. Hole 13 shoots left (shoe leg right still but pin is left of the old placement in the woods). Those are the ones that stood out the most, but I would say that nearly half the course has new pin placements.

Pros:

Concrete pad are always a plus in my book. A few open holes but must are in the woods with some being really tight and others opening up in the woods. A nice mixture of hyzer and anhyzer holes. Multiple pin placement looks to change the course with each placement. There are some small hills that come into play on multiple holes.

Cons:

Some of the signs are beat up others are missing. While there are multiple pin placements there is nothing to let you know which one the pin is in. There were some areas that were still holding water from the rains the week before I played though it was not too bad and a towel will be needed.

Other Thoughts:

This course looks like it has seen better days. Though because of that there are many holes that will test your skills and allow for some risk vs reward shots. With the years this course has under it belt you can see there has been many years of additions which make this course a must play if you are in the area with time to kill.

Pros:

Note: This is a complete re-write based on new scoring system I created.
Great park maintenance, beautifully mowed lawns even in the woods where applicable.
Very little trash, people were emptying the garbage as we played.
Lots of benches and makeshift seating to give you a chance to rest.
It has a pretty good mix of distances considering its age especially. With the pin location variety it can provide an even greater mix.
Course is very easy to follow, we did have one instance where we were lead astray but easily got back on course. Most holes have Nex-T signs if you look.
Multiple pin locations can change difficulty of course.

Cons:

Bad neighborhood. Have heard bad things but never experienced them so take it with a grain of salt.
Single tee location so the only adjustment between pro and rec. players is for par.
No way to tell what position the basket is in without looking first.
Did not see any accessible bathrooms.
Some graffiti on course, hopefully this has since been cleaned up.

Other Thoughts:

The first tee is pretty daunting, but very cool. It was really fun walking around and discovering each hole. Some really memorable holes and our daughter really loved playing by the creeks.
Note, while this place has gotten a bad rep online we saw nothing that made us concerned in the least. In fact, we had not read about any of this stuff prior and the place gave us no reason to feel worried...YMMV.

Using my new scoring system, this park rates a 70 out of 100. It is a beautifully maintained park but the lack of tee variety and adjustment for ability cost it a chance at 4 stars.

Really well worth visiting.

Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they chose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I say adds anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

My first round there was a few weeks after one of the top players in the region had decided to cut down some tree limbs without permission. The locals showed me the damage, which was disgraceful.

Nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 20, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Senic coursein the woods mostly, well thought out holes. Course is marked pretty well, we did have to look around a couple of times for the next tee. This did not cause a long delay. Nice signs marking the multiple basket locations. Most holes had two or three posssible locations. If the baskets get moved regularly this will keep the course fresh. Course was pretty well maintained and the players we encountered were very friendly.

Cons:

Unfortunately this park is surrounded by some rather rough neighborhoods. You kind of wonder what you are getting into as you pass the junk yards.
Another course with the older baskets that are difficult to see, requireing some extra walking or throwing blind. This seems to be common to most of the courses I have played but I sure do like those nice yellow Innova baskets. The course was a little wet the day we played and the tee pads were surprisingly slippery. I little caution resolved this. Unfortunately there has been some vandalism on some of the tee box signs.

Other Thoughts:

If your a lefty this course will be to your likeing as many of the holes are layed out left to right. Caused many long walks in the woods for me, but this will make me learn some new shots. I will come back and play again.
