Pros:
(3.285 Rating) AKA Redan, this old school wooded and park style course has survived the test of time.
- CHALLENGING - I was expecting this course to be a heavy dose of recreational challenges. Although that is the case for many pin placements, baskets are rotated around to more challenging locations quite often with some that I'd say are Advanced level caliber. For example on my play, holes (5), (13) and (17) were all in the long placement and required 375-foot power while also shaping the drive to finish a certain way. There are several wooded holes that require veteran precision or Houdini escape maneuvers to save par. I got a mix of front, middle and back placements for my appearance here and it felt like an Intermediate level course to me. I think 900 rated players will average even par or so.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored this aspect a 3 out of 5. Once I got to hole (5), I started to fall in love with this course as the layout basically stayed in the woods the entire time. I can tell this is an older park because the wooded portions have 100 foot plus tall oaks, pines and poplars. There's also a couple mini creeks snaking around the layout too. I kind-of wish it came into play more often. I did notice a few areas of excess trash while on the course though.
- VARIETY - Mostly an all par 3 layout. A few holes in the beginning are rather open, but after (4) it's mostly technical woods play with a few park style holes mixed in. A decent amount of distance variation. There are a few sub 200-foot ace runs and several upper 300s to 400 foot bomb plays. Hole (15) I thought was the only legit par 4 and I wish it had a few more of them. As noted above, there is a small creek in play a few times and there's some modest 20 to 25-foot gentle sloping terrain on a few holes.
- NAVIGATION - Decent. The signage was probably top-of-the-line twenty years ago, but it needs to be replaced now. Several signs are faded and rusted, although a couple do look brand new. There are several large directional cues located on the layout, which helped a bunch at the few tricky spots. I did not see a course map posted anywhere onsite.
- TEE AREAS - Decent sized 4 by 12 foot concrete tees. I loved that nearly every tee had a bench to sit down at.
- FUN FACTOR - This seems like a course to experience as a group. Perfect for a wide variety of skill levels. Not cupcake and not pro level. There are birdies to be had and ace lines to stare down on some of the short placements. The harder placements will appeal to higher skilled players and typically won't be over punishing to mortals. I personally did a little searching on a couple bad ricochets, but it wasn't all doom and gloom. It's possible to lose a disc here, but more are likely left by accident than truly lost. It's not surprising to note that the course had numerous groups on it for my play on a weekday afternoon.
Cons:
Needs an amenities overhaul and that's it.
- AMENITIES AND EXTRAS - The Mach III baskets I'm guessing are the originals from 1991. Wow did they once make some hearty near indestructible baskets back then. However, this is 2020, and they need an update. As noted above regarding the signage, it needs to be replaced too. I'm also kind of miffed as too why there is not a few extra long tees on the course were space is available. Such an easy way to change the way a hole plays and to increase the course appeal. The course needs placement indicators too as several placements are blind. Could use a course map posting too.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - I'm sure new players get brought here all the time, but this is not an ideal beginner's course imo. Too many trees for them too break-in plastic on. I don't take off points for this.
- PARKING - It's a bit of a walk to tee (1) from the parking area and even further away once finishing (18).
- TIME WAITING - A very popular course to my knowledge. Be prepared to wait during prime playing times.
Other Thoughts:
There are some things I love about this course, but there are some head scratchers as well. A ratings 3.25 tweener in my book with the fun factor and overall vibe being the biggest key for me to place it on the higher end of that threshold. This really could be a solid 3.5 course if it would address the many fixable issues like signage, baskets and increased general maintenance. Among the Atlanta area courses I've played, I would not place Redan in the top tier, and perhaps not the second tier. It's not that Redan is not a good course, cause it is, it's just that Atlanta is loaded with high quality courses on sprawling beautiful landscapes. Players on their first road trip to the area should not be headed here unless they are staying here for several days. For those that live in the Atlanta metro area itself, you got to get a round in here at least once for the history aspect. For a course built in 1991, it's got to be one of the older ones in the area.
- TIME PLAY - 52 minutes for this quick solo.
