Into the Danger Zone 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

They were able to add disc golf to the main park in the area, with a course map (now faded), mailbox for scorecards (empty), sturdy tee posts with hole number and distances, and 24 chain DGA baskets. Maintenance is excellent, and there are a ton of things immediately nearby for family members who don't disc golf.

The hole lengths (for the most part) are geared toward the casual player, as intended, and there is some opportunity to learn to control your lines of flight on holes 1 & 5.

Cons:

However, if there are any other park users nearby, the odds are high that they'll be using the two shelters, the kiddie playground, and the volleyball courts that are IN the line of play on holes 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Responsible disc golfers who can throw with any velocity should skip dangerous holes, so 2/3rds of the course could be out of play at any given time. And if anyone else is playing disc golf, you'll need to wait for them to clear the next tee before you throw, because most of the tees are less than 20 feet from the previous basket.

Specific concerns: hole1 plays 400 feet between a row of overhanging trees and a gateless fence.
2 throws near the corner of the basketball court.
3's basket is tight between the baseball bleachers, the parking lot, and a shelter.
4 is less than 20 feet from two sand volleyball courts.
5: the cleanest line is out to the open field to the right, as the trees have obscured the intended line.
6 plays over the pool fence, with the shelter, the parking lot, and the next tee less than 20 feet from the basket.
7 plays along the parking lot and right at the playground.
8 shoots over the playground and path (as well as the 9th tee), and right at another shelter and parking lot.
9 seems to imply a mando up over and around the shelter, to the blind park entrance path.

Talk about a danger zone!

Other Thoughts:

I'm always one to appreciate the efforts to put in a course, no matter the intended audience. But this may be one of the more dangerous layouts I've seen in 211 courses played. I suppose if locals can go to this park when there is NOBODY else around, they could play a quick, enjoyable round working on upshots and have a pretty fun putter round, but there is no reason for anyone but the most ardent course bagger (ahem!) to come in from out of town to play Rotary.

Wow, not a safe design 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has good baskets that catch well in a nicely kept city park. There is no trash or vandalism, and the grass was nicely mowed when I played. The tees are marked with numbered posts, and it's an easy layout to follow. The natural pads were in pretty good shape, it doesn't seem to get enough traffic to cause much erosion. There are a couple holes that creatively use the trees available, including one down a hallway of trees with a low ceiling, where the best shot is a roller that plays out into a field and cuts back through the tree line.

Cons:

The course is short and easy, with no holes that will really challenge most players. That said, the difficulty and variety of the course aren't so bad on their own, but when you look at the way the course interacts with the rest of the park it's a real problem. Nearly every hole plays over or near another park feature, making it very unsafe. You end up shooting over a pool, across the corner of a playground, right next to pavilions and walking paths, and along ball fields where people would sit to watch the game. On a nice day, it could be really dangerous to play this course at all, I'm surprised no issues have caused this course to be pulled.

Other Thoughts:

The holes themselves are great for beginners, with reasonable lengths, enough obstacles to push beginners to try different lines, and no real punishment for errant shots. More experienced players won't find much challenge, and other than one or two fun holes, there isn't much variety or really interesting shots. If it's a nice day where people might be at the park, stay away from this one, it's just not worth the risk of hitting someone. If you can play at a time or in a season where the park is not heavily used, it's an ok place to take new players or get in a quick putter round.

badly thought out design 2+ years drive by

Pros:

5 is a nice hole
A beginner course for people to learn without being overwhelming

Cons:

Short holes most under 300 ,
bad layout course designer didn't know what he was doing seeing theres lots of the park that was unused and everything was packed into one little area
most of the holes put people at risk and force you to throw over shelters and next to a pool .

Other Thoughts:

Just drive up the road a little ways and play shoaff in ft wayne are drive to bryan to play rec park are sherwood's course instead all much better options

Four!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The Course is pretty tight and technical in places and straight narrow and long in other places. You can let it rip on a few holes too. Tee signs are present and course seems pretty dry throughout the year. Sign of the course exiss so you know where to go.

Cons:

Where to begin. Just too many people all the time. It's great to see the park get used so much but it's just not the place to be whipping discs. If you're good at climbing fences then this course is for you. If not bring your walking shoes. No restrooms or wastebaskets around, and if you've gotta go you're pretty much SOL.

Other Thoughts:

Over the few times I've played this course I've interrupted a picnic on 6. Paused a basketball game on 1, ruined some poor guys layup on 2. Interrupted baseball practice on 3. Scared the crap out of grandma on 8. And almost knocked a cigarrete out of some poor guys mouth on 9. All while staying at or under par folks!

Pros:

The park is well maintained. Good practice course.

Cons:

It was built in the middle of a playground and around the public pool ( right next to it) Most throws either require you to ask people to watch out and asking kids not to pick up and throw your disc back at you. Not the best lay out of a course in my opinion.

Other Thoughts:

For practicing shots and putts the course is not bad, but playing there on a nice day is a bad idea, as the park has people in and around flyways a lot. A lot of kids that either don't pay attention or pick up your drives and play catch with each other. Gets to be quite a hassle.....if it is the only place you can huck it then so be it. If you got a ride to a different course....take it !

Pros:

Nice baskets and signs. Good course to work on different types of throws or just learn to play

Cons:

In the middle of too many other activities that are probably more popular in this town. Impossible to play when park is being used.

Other Thoughts:

Don't let these baskets go to waste. Move this course before somebody tries to play it that can throw hard and hurts someone. I only played all nine in the winter when no one was around. A few holes are decent but not worth the drive at all.

Pros:

Small town that has a course. Nice Baskets, Tee markers with an engraved layout of hole. some long holes, Kiosk

Cons:

# 6 tee was slightly away from pool and fairway had a volleyball court, pool at either side and basket was next to bike rack

#9 played around or over pavillion

Other Thoughts:

if park was completly empty I would say this course has it's challenges, but some holes are just placed where trouble will find it's way. I thought they had more land to use and course needs to be redesigned before someone get's hurt. Hope DG club is using the "EDGE" program in Hicksvile, school system.
