Swimming Upstream and Loving It 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I got to play SFDGC on vacation this month and I really liked it. You're going to get most everything you want from a top quality course. There are multiple tees, all gravel that is well maintained and level. Good baskets that are up to the task. Par 4's and 5's mixed in with a few nice deuce runs to lighten things up. A lot of trees on most fairways, but allowing room for good throws to get around. Some elevation change will make it a bit more interesting. The Salmon Falls River is often in sight as you make your way around, with Maine sitting on the opposite bank. I loved the scenery.

We pulled in on a Tuesday morning and played with a couple of locals that helped us navigate the course. I had a great time with Peanut and Chris showing me the way. It was a wonderful morning, sunny and almost no wind.

The course layout is great. All holes were maintained well and trimmed. The first hole starts in open space before doglegging right into the woods. There is an elevation drop after you enter the treeline, and then a climb up to the basket after you cross the creek. Hole 2 is a short downhill that offers a great shot at a birdie if you are on line. Hole 4 might be my favorite hole there, as you follow the river on the left through a good tunnel through the trees on a good par 4 hole. Very pretty and peaceful, so long as you avoid missing to the left side.

14 is another fairly lengthy run through the trees with water to the right side, with spots to land that will set up a nice approach. The holes are mostly wooded until you get to 15 and 16. They're pretty wide open down the middle, but there are heavy woods to the left and a ridgline to the right that has a hillside with brushy bushes and tall grass. 17 is another long wooded affair, with some good lines and landing zones available if you can hit them. 18 has a bit of a grassy alley with thick rough to either side, but it's reachable if you keep the drive centered.

Cons:

If I have to reach for a downside, it is pay to play. It is worth every penny for sure. It could have concrete tees but I didn't feel like I used an inferior option on the nice, flat gravel circles.

Other Thoughts:

I didn't give descriptions for all of the great holes here. I love the tight and technical fairways. I would surely return for more rounds, and recommend the course to others.

I didn't play so hot, with a 10 over par 61. We played the middle tees for most of the holes, but stepped up to the longs once or twice to get the full effect of Salmon Falls when necessary.

Pros:

Primarily wooded
Many tee pad options
Nice scenery

Cons:

Relatively flat
Too many tee pad options
Pay-to-Play

Other Thoughts:

The title of my review stems from the fact that it feels like Deliverance as you're driving on the dirt road to this course. There's a sign prohibiting shooting for now due to vandalism; however, we heard gunfire very close by. This course is primarily wooded (which is my favorite type) with a few open holes. There is not much elevation though. There are white and blue tee pads, which make for many options, but too many. It's very confusing to know which course you're playing. There's a creek running through the course, which makes for nice scenery particularly with the foliage changing now. We met the owner. He was very nice and is trying to further develop and improve the course. It costs $7 to play.

Pros:

Wow. Too much good to say. What a course. Every shot line. Every obstacle. Every risk/reward scenario. Inclines, declines, over-valleys. Woods, field, field into woods, woods into field. Name an element of the game of disc golf that you could possibly want to see. This place has it.

Cons:

Signs are not clear at all. Tee pad and basket position naming system is prohibitively confusing and inconsistent. Doesn't make the course any less enjoyable, just really confusing to decipher when you don't know your way yet.

Other Thoughts:

In 10-15 years, when it matures and grows in, this place will be more than worthy of NT and world tour events. Really a phenomenal course. Truly top-tier. Renny-Gold-good. Seriously.

You will Salmon Falls in love with this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course was designed wonderfully. Has a great variety of shots with a great flow. It has the characteristics of a northeast course being tightly wooded with technical shots, and also plays a couple holes on the edge of the forest for big arms to unload.

The scenery is amazing! you'll travel down a dirt road for quite a while seeing tiny little signs to encourage you to keep going. at the end of the road you find a dirt parking lot with a small kiosk for signing in, gathering course information and also retrieving disc you may have lost during previous rounds. The adventure begins in a lush green field of small rolling hills and works its way into what feels like an enchanted forest. The entire course plays along the beautiful winding Salmon Falls River.

All the holes are well marked if you understand the sign system. When moving from one hole to the next you will see 2,3, or 4 white or blue stakes. These stakes our pointing to the multiple tee pads. The blues being the furthest from the pin and the whites being closer and offering a variety of shots.

The tee pads are very large and circular so whether you're a beginner just learning to throw standing still or James Conrad with a 100 ft run up the tee pads will suffice.

Cons:

Unfortunately this course is located in the tick infested state of New Hampshire so be advised and know to check for ticks.
The middle of summer is a great time to avoid the ticks as they are not out in full force then. Spring and Fall are the two worst times of the year for ticks.

The course does play near some wetland so it can get a little swampy but the crew has done a great job of building bridges and walkways to navigate around the wet areas. Just try not to throw an arrant drive in the water, it may be gone forever.

Other Thoughts:

If you see the designer Dennis there, stop and say hello. He's incredibly friendly and loves the feedback about the course from the players. Dennis also has a bunch of Salmon Falls merchandise that he sells out of his car. He's got really great shirts, hats, stickers etc.

If you like hard cider and want to have a one of a kind experience go say hi to Doug at his cider place. Its on the dirt road to the course. It may not look like much being just two old trailers next to each other but the cider is amazing and Doug is a real character that likes to entertain.

Cons:

A lot of thick brush and ferns on certain holes during the summer months that makes finding your disc very difficult even if you are still in the fairway

Pros:

Well maintained, beautiful property, excellent use of space.
Very fun, very fair, shots throughout the course.
Holes are well thought out. Course gets you to use all aspects of your game to place, set up, and make shots.
Liked the gravel tee pads. Unique circle design. Worked well.
Excellent MachX baskets.
Seating on every hole. Trash bins are all over the course.
Excellent directional signage.
Multiple tee boxes (circles) on each hole.
Putting circle marked with wood chips on most holes.
Pretty easy walking.
Course loops back towards parking lot midway through.
Good size parking lot.
Areas with tables and chairs at entrance and towards front of course to relax and hang out.
Baskets have solar lights on top of them!
Port a pot on site at parking lot.
Scorecards available.

Cons:

Tee signs don't show OB (back of scorecard does address OB)
On a few holes it is kind of tough to, or you cannot see the baskets from tee.
The directional signs to the different tee pads on each hole are a little confusing at first.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course! The upkeep is very well done. When I played, the course was in excellent condition. The fairways were mowed, the rough wasn't too high. Trees were trimmed up nice nice. The place looked great! I really enjoyed the layout of Salmon Falls. Most of the longer holes usually required some thought in placement and next shot set up. The ones that didn't, required a little bit of stank on that drive. The course gives you some super fun, reachable par 3's as well. It's a really good blend of short, long, tight, and open.I didn't have any issues with the course being unfair at all.
The directional signs guide you around the course, and there are even a bunch arrows pointing you down the long dirt road that leads to this gem ( those were a really good idea!).
$6 to play here all day is a steal. I didn't see any salmon, and I didn't see and falls, but the river is beautiful. The water comes into play, but you have options to avoid a splash. I am so happy that I took the extra time and went out of my way to play here. It is definitely worth a couple hours drive.
Check out Salmon Falls, it will not disappoint you.

Only been once last week, and of course picked the windiest day of the week so the first hole and last few holes were tough with 30mph wind but in the woods wasn't too bad. I would wait till summer to go again with the river being so high there were multiple teepads in 2-3+ feet of water and of course adding more casual water hazards in general. Still had a blast but would definitely wait till after June to play this course.

Can't go wrong with SFDGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful setting. Great mix of wooded, open field shots, with plenty of riverside fairways and one directly over the Salmon Falls River. I have only been playing a few years and playing here 2-5 times a week has helped my game improve noticeably. Dennis, Ron, and Rocky are constantly putting in work to improve this course, and you notice something new and cleaned up every visit. New tee pads are also popping up. ( Pretty excited for this.). Benches and trash barrels at most of the holes and some nice spots to relax and enjoy the river and scenery. The stone dust circle tee pads give you a few options to hit multiple lines for most every hole.

Cons:

In my opinion not many cons. It is a pay course so some may not like that, but it's well worth it. Ticks are seasonal, just pay attention and use a good repellent and you should be fine. If you're looking for a quick round or short course this isn't it. New tee pads will help this though.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely worth a visit. It is improving everyday. Dennis and Ron are dedicated to making SFDGC a must play in NH. You won't be disappointed. Great group of locals too! This course has come a long way in just a few years. Get out there!!

One of my Favorites! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The best thing I think for this course is the layout in general. A lot of the holes are unique and doesn't feel like your playing the same thing over and over. This being a par 60 and in the woods you will definitely get some throwing in too. The teepads I thought were great too. The small gravel made pivoting on your foot easier.

Cons:

I guess the only con is that the first time I played in early spring last year the ticks were bad (depends on the season). This year I found one, so it was definitely better. Bring bug spray just incase.

Neutral - Just beware there is water to your side. Some holes you may not think there is a water hazard, but there is(Especially, hole 15). The water isn't too bad, so if it is a needed disc, you can probably go in after it.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I love this course. You will definitely get your moneys worth playing this. I drove about an hour to this course and would drive even more to play this. My other thought is that it significantly improved since last year, I went, so this course will only get better. Go play Salmon Falls!!!

Scenic Gem in NH 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fantastic mix of long, short, open, wooded, and scenic shots near/over the river. What a fantastic par and tough shots throughout. Really challenging without being overzealous!
Hole 1 is an amazing start to the course* and hole 18 finishes so nicely.

I had my very first ace on Hole 12! So that made my round better. haha.

It was beautiful hearing the running water and throwing at it, and on the very next hole having the opportunity to throw OVER the water! Very serene when you take a moment to appreciate it.

There were more holes that I loved, but my favorites were definitely 1, 12, 13, 15?, & 18!

Cons:

1 is a great start to a hole, but more than half the time I wasn't entirely sure where i was throwing to. Hard to tell when you're so far away on the tee. Suggestion: Maybe add sign on tree (in gap) to let you know what direction the hole is. Otherwise, it was awesome.

Ticks. Mostly wood/dog ticks. Gross little buggers, but not the lyme kind. I am pretty sure my friend and I got most of them on hole 15(?) on the right side. That brush pile is unforgiving. Definitely lost a disc in there and I was watching it the whole time. No idea where it went. C'est la vie! But, the ticks are bad in there. Keep an eye out for them and use tick spray!!

I can't remember the number, but the hole that plays dog leg left and up a hill seemed to have been adjusted more than once, and the tee box looks like it was facing the first layout. I would like a couple cleaner lines on this (it's been a year, so maybe it's already happened)... the ground was pretty soggy too, so make sure you're ready for it.

Other Thoughts:

I am sad I only ever played this once. This is a beautiful course! I cannot wait to go back!

Great golf and great vibes 2+ years drive by

Pros:

- Great atmosphere
- Well maintained
- Fantastic golf with excellent shot variety
- Circle tee-pads
- Great use of water features
- Just plain nice looking property
- Close to downtown Rochester and associated amenities

Cons:

- Tee-pads are crushed stone/gravel and prone to rutting
- Tick city during tick season(s)
- A bit lacking in on course amenities due to location
- The road in can be tough on vehicles (not a course con, but a fact none the less)

Other Thoughts:

Created by local designer and course guru Dennis Grzywacz of Acme Disc Golf, Salmon Falls reflects the love, sweat, and experience that has been poured into it. Set in the surprisingly beautiful woods of Rochester, NH, Salmon Falls DGC takes full advantage of the land with sweeping field shots, winding wooded fairways, and constant flirting with the Salmon Falls River. To get there is an adventure in itself, as the road leading into the course goes from paved to dirt, then from defined dirt road to meandering sandy path through a dusty wilderness. Dennis has placed marker signs to guide the way, but they aren't glaringly obvious and are at wide enough intervals that a first time visitor will begin to feel lost here and there. The sandy road is rife with divots and stones, so take it easy on your way in. Fortunately, as long as you follow the signs the club kiosk and parking area will present itself soon enough. Hole 18 will be apparent on the right side of the parking area and doubles as a practice basket when not in use. There is also an extensive field the is used for hole 1's fairway but that is large enough for out of the way driving practice as well. The field is left long during hay season and a central hub for bloodsucking arachnids during tick season, and as such is not always a convenient warm up spot.

Follow the signs to hole 1 and you're off to an excellent round (or two) of golf. From hole 1's open air bomb into the wood line to hole 17's punishingly long and tightly wooded lines, you'll get a little of everything in your coming round. Each drive is a unique look, and you'll have a blast trying to figure out which shots work best for you. While challenging, Salmon Falls is designed to allow multiple routes on each hole, and the large, circular tee pads facilitate this quite well. The flow of the course is well designed, and there is a good mix and distribution of the short, long, wooded, and open holes. Just when you start to tire of longer, wooded shots, SFDGC hits you with a short, more open par 3 followed by two tougher 3s that make you deal with elevation changes and tough greens. Tired of flirting with the water in the 12,13,14 stretch? Well no worries because it's time for the 500ft open plateau shot that stretches along the ridge that runs from hole 1's tee pad to hole 18's. Never are you playing more than 3 holes in a row that are at all similar, and it makes for a refreshing round.

Although the tee-pads have held up well, they're made of crushed stone/gravel and ruts have formed in some of them. Nothing devastating, but some drives will be affected if you take the most popular lines.

While it is usually content to lurk on the edges of the fairway or through a curtain of rough and trees, the Salmon Falls River is a common presence on many of the holes. Nowhere is the river more expertly used than on holes 12 and 13, which shoot out onto and then back from a peninsula formed by the river's 180 bend. 13 in particular is in strong contention for signature hole here with a daring par 3 that shoots over the river and uphill into the woods. It should be noted that Dennis and the locals are very good about retrieving and returning lost discs, and there's a better chance here of receiving your plastic back than at Bellamy Park or Squam nearby.

Anyone playing New England disc golf will know to keep a vigilant eye out for ticks, but Salmon Falls warrants a reminder. The secluded nature of the course combined with a proximity to clean water means that wildlife is prevalent. As such, so are the ticks that prey on said wildlife. When the field is long and ticks are in season, it's not uncommon to pick up 3+ of the little bastards by the end of the first hole. It's usually less bad in the wooded sections of the course, but not so much that you should relax your guard. I mention this not to scare anyone off, but to make sure that those looking to tackle the course in tick season are ready with countermeasures and vigilance.

When it's all said and done, Salmon Falls DGC is a prime course that will only get better over time. The land has an excellent steward in Dennis (and his Dad and canine companion) and looks better than the small crew of curators would indicate. A second set of equally challenging tees to help balance out any perceived "lefty" or "righty" bias is in the works, and eventual gold and rec tees have been discussed as well. The tees are cool while less than ideal, and the ticks can be a scourge, but in the end what it boils down to is that SFDGC provides excellent golf in a laid back, relaxing, New Hampshire atmosphere with good people. Do yourself a favor and take the ride over. You won't regret it!

Hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 20, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is one of the few hidden gems in New England.

1) This. course. is. huge.
2) Each hole is so memorable. They all have their own personalities and rarely throw the same drive back-to-back.
3) The course uses the river as a hazard feature on many holes that makes it very picturesque.
4) Big righty arms can really attack this course. Tons of par 4's that even without a great first shot can be saved with a great second shot for a look at birdie.
5) Perfect mix of easy & hard par 3's and 4's, with a nice par 5 to finish off the round on hole 17 that can be eagled.
6) Circular teepads give you a lot of freedom.
7) Again, breathtakingly beautiful.
8) Very fair pin locations and multiple attack lines. Many holes have safe lines and risk/reward lines.

Cons:

1) Ticks
2) Can be very wet/marshy
3) Signage could use an update but who cares.

Other Thoughts:

Monster of a course and one that I truly believe could be on the PDGA tour. You'll see from the first tee shot what awaits you. This course is like a rollercoaster, starting you off with multiple par 4's to warm up the arm, followed by some very gettable par 3's sprinkled in. Amazing blend of open bomb shots and tight and technical tunnels. Be careful of the ticks because YOU WILL get some. It can also be very wet in some fairways that you must throw over.

One of the best courses in New England 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 31, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful, unforgettable, fair, and fun are the four words I would use to describe this course. It's really the only course worth driving to over and over again within 90 mile radius because I know it's going to be just as enjoyable as the time before. Every hole is a little technical, fair and is perfectly designed. The flow is great and it definitely favors bigger arms in comparison to other local courses.

Length, Par, use of OB and designated drop zones makes this championship caliber course play really fun. What also sets this course apart from a lot of other courses is the increased level of risk/reward and ability to attack the pin from so many unique lines. On top of it half the holes have a creek that comes into play but can be avoided if you stay on the fairways.

The circular teepads in my opinion are an added bonus. Most courses in the Midwest actually have a similar construct and in my opinion works well since It gives novice and pro discers flexibility as to which route to take off the teepad.

With plans to build a short set of tees and alternate pins on a few holes next year this course is surely destined for great things. Enough thinking about it, just go play this course! You won't be disappointed.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I can't remember playing many courses that featured a river as well as Salmon Falls. Ponds, lakes, and meandering streams? Sure. But the river is the centerpiece here. It's not a disc-eating nuisance, and on most of the holes near the river it would take a bad shot or an unfortunate shank to end up in it. But if it's summer and you do land in the water, you'd probably take off your shoes, wade in, and maybe stay there awhile.
My favorite hole is the only one that truly throws over part of the river, hole 13, a gorgeous turnover shot over the water to an uphill approach. There are clear gaps but a bad shot will hit some trees and plop into the river (don't worry, there is a
bailout option that will leave you short of the birdie look).

There is no shortage of well designed holes. Hole 5 (I believe) has two distinct routes on a multi-throw hole. Bad shots can end up in the thick rough or the river, but in general this is a fun hole with a curvy fairway.

Hole 7 is a fun throw over a shallow pond to an uphill landing area before a dogleg right. Hole 8 has isn't so long but features a basket on a hill with a dangerous potential for rollaways.

Oh, and hole 1 is a great par 4 across an open meadow with two very different wooded routes to the basket on the approach.

While the course is mostly wooded, holes 1, 15, 16, and 18 are fairly open and exposed to the wind.

Navigation wasn't hard in most places with prevalent next tee signs.

Cons:

The wooded holes had a lot of cut branches in thick piles, and landing in these is not fun (can't imagine what you'd do if you were in a tournament, as your footing would be really unsafe).

There were a few too many long wooded holes here. Not a lot, but just one or two too many.

Tee pads are giant circular constructions, which is interesting, but they are all crushed gravel. I will say that they were in pretty good shape, but there were some divots near the ends.

The tee signs aren't great. I like how they are posted on upright railroad ties, but other than indicating the distance, they aren't useful. I really don't like signs that draw a straight line to the basket even when the fairway curves.

Other Thoughts:

I don't really know what this land is used for. But I ran into a guy (the owner?) next to a bright red schoolbus on hole 2 who said I should feel free to let my dog off the leash. That's my kind of place and kind of what I love about New Hampshire. No pretension or worries. Enjoy the river and the quiet. What a great property.

UPDATE: I initially rated this as a 3.5, and I'm not sure why. I'd prefer better tee pads, but the design, beauty, and fun shots here really stand out. This is a 4.0.

+Long, championship-level course stands out in a region with very few of them.
+Great balance of holes in terms of left/right/straight, elevation, wooded vs open placement shots, etc.
+Excellent signage and amenities (trash barrels, benches, etc).

+Many challenging greens with slopes and natural protection to make you plan your approach and think twice about your putts.
+Natural OB is used well to enhance difficulty (and sometimes player safety) without a high risk of lost-discs.

Cons:

-Rough is rough. Some brushpiles to eliminate and scrub to beat back. Nevertheless it's in great shape for such a new course with limited traffic.

Very long scenic holes with a wide variety of shots, I used almost all the discs in my bag. The course uses elevation and a good mix of fields and woods very well.

Cons:

The course is still in its infancy, so there are the expected brush piles and some thick rough in a few spots, The owner is very receptive to suggestions and I'm sure all this is in the works. The teepads being natural might pose problems in wet conditions and to those used to rubber or concrete.

Phenomenal course overall and I'm pretty impressed by what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time. My favorite course in N.H so far!

Needs Some Work - But Would Play Again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a wide variety of play. Some holes are wide open with no obstruction and others have quite a few trees. A few holes are right alongside the river, which is very scenic - but offer a bit more of a challenge. The tee "circles" offer a bit more throwing room and are very nice. Signage makes it very easy to navigate the course and it's spread out enough to where your game wont be interfered by other players. Each basket is equipped with solar powered lighting, which could make it easier if you play after sundown.

Cons:

The course charges $5 per player, which is reasonable, but the course is obviously still being developed. There are quite a few tree stumps and heavy brush piles. We actually lost a disc in one of the brush piles. There are also some heavily swampy holes which makes it very difficult if your throws aren't perfectly executed - otherwise, prepare to get your feet wet.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first time playing this course, so I wasn't familiar with the basket location. The sign on hole #1 looked pretty straight-forward, but we ended up throwing our discs all the way to the left and then realized the basket was nowhere to be found. After some looking, we eventually found it back to the right. I would suggest the management do something to clear that up - but if you play the course more than once, that shouldn't be a repeating issue.

Great NH course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Scenic setting playing along and at points over the Salmon Falls River.
Not a lot of other people on the course- feels very private.

Cons:

$5 to play (I don't mind paying this, but I know others might)

Other Thoughts:

This is the best course in the seacoast area of NH. A little tricky to find (gps 0 Bernard Rd and follow past where the paved road ends- dirt road will take you the remainder of the way).

Another nice course in the NH seacoast 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Secluded and heavily wooded, this up and coming course has a lot of upside. A nice walk through the woods, with a few moderate in/declines, this course begins just past a quarry about 3/4 from the road; just follow the signs, you'll get there.
The scenery, including many holes that run along (and briefly over) the Salmon Falls river, is idyllic. The holes are largely challenging and through woods, often with a choice of lane whether you favor BH or Flick shots. (May I suggest the left lane on hole 1?)
There are a few wide open holes towards the end so you can air it out.
Hole 17, the only par 5, was one of my favorites, though the trees were definitely an issue to be reckoned with.
I love the round tee "boxes."

Cons:

There are a lot of different spots that need pruning, or the underbrush is just not trod on yet, but once those few spots are thinned out, this course will really shine.
Some of the pars need a little work, but that could be my lack of skill or the need for a little more ground clutter clean up. I can't remember which ones exactly.

Other Thoughts:

I met the owner hard at work with his weed whacker as I drove up. He obviously has a deep love of the sport, knows the short comings of his course, and is working hard to fix them.
I live very close to Bellamy Park, in Dover, and a little further from Squam, in Rochester, both free courses. The fact that it's $5 to play SFDGC may deter me a little, but won't keep me away completely, not by a long shot. I can't wait to see how this course develops.
I'm giving 3.5 stars but I believe it could be improved to 4, maybe even 4.5, with some added amenities.
