You will Salmon Falls in love with this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course was designed wonderfully. Has a great variety of shots with a great flow. It has the characteristics of a northeast course being tightly wooded with technical shots, and also plays a couple holes on the edge of the forest for big arms to unload.

The scenery is amazing! you'll travel down a dirt road for quite a while seeing tiny little signs to encourage you to keep going. at the end of the road you find a dirt parking lot with a small kiosk for signing in, gathering course information and also retrieving disc you may have lost during previous rounds. The adventure begins in a lush green field of small rolling hills and works its way into what feels like an enchanted forest. The entire course plays along the beautiful winding Salmon Falls River.

All the holes are well marked if you understand the sign system. When moving from one hole to the next you will see 2,3, or 4 white or blue stakes. These stakes our pointing to the multiple tee pads. The blues being the furthest from the pin and the whites being closer and offering a variety of shots.

The tee pads are very large and circular so whether you're a beginner just learning to throw standing still or James Conrad with a 100 ft run up the tee pads will suffice.

Cons:

Unfortunately this course is located in the tick infested state of New Hampshire so be advised and know to check for ticks.
The middle of summer is a great time to avoid the ticks as they are not out in full force then. Spring and Fall are the two worst times of the year for ticks.

The course does play near some wetland so it can get a little swampy but the crew has done a great job of building bridges and walkways to navigate around the wet areas. Just try not to throw an arrant drive in the water, it may be gone forever.

Other Thoughts:

If you see the designer Dennis there, stop and say hello. He's incredibly friendly and loves the feedback about the course from the players. Dennis also has a bunch of Salmon Falls merchandise that he sells out of his car. He's got really great shirts, hats, stickers etc.

If you like hard cider and want to have a one of a kind experience go say hi to Doug at his cider place. Its on the dirt road to the course. It may not look like much being just two old trailers next to each other but the cider is amazing and Doug is a real character that likes to entertain.

Great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great wooded course with a mix of long bomb drives and tight controlled shots off the box. MachX baskets are great! The course community is very friendly

Cons:

A lot of thick brush and ferns on certain holes during the summer months that makes finding your disc very difficult even if you are still in the fairway

Other Thoughts:

This course is a lot of fun and the white tees are some of the best short tees I have ever played. Blue tees are excellent shot designs that keep me coming back.

Real real nice! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained, beautiful property, excellent use of space.
Very fun, very fair, shots throughout the course.
Holes are well thought out. Course gets you to use all aspects of your game to place, set up, and make shots.
Liked the gravel tee pads. Unique circle design. Worked well.
Excellent MachX baskets.
Seating on every hole. Trash bins are all over the course.
Excellent directional signage.
Multiple tee boxes (circles) on each hole.
Putting circle marked with wood chips on most holes.
Pretty easy walking.
Course loops back towards parking lot midway through.
Good size parking lot.
Areas with tables and chairs at entrance and towards front of course to relax and hang out.
Baskets have solar lights on top of them!
Port a pot on site at parking lot.
Scorecards available.

Cons:

Tee signs don't show OB (back of scorecard does address OB)
On a few holes it is kind of tough to, or you cannot see the baskets from tee.
The directional signs to the different tee pads on each hole are a little confusing at first.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course! The upkeep is very well done. When I played, the course was in excellent condition. The fairways were mowed, the rough wasn't too high. Trees were trimmed up nice nice. The place looked great! I really enjoyed the layout of Salmon Falls. Most of the longer holes usually required some thought in placement and next shot set up. The ones that didn't, required a little bit of stank on that drive. The course gives you some super fun, reachable par 3's as well. It's a really good blend of short, long, tight, and open.I didn't have any issues with the course being unfair at all.
The directional signs guide you around the course, and there are even a bunch arrows pointing you down the long dirt road that leads to this gem ( those were a really good idea!).
$6 to play here all day is a steal. I didn't see any salmon, and I didn't see and falls, but the river is beautiful. The water comes into play, but you have options to avoid a splash. I am so happy that I took the extra time and went out of my way to play here. It is definitely worth a couple hours drive.
Check out Salmon Falls, it will not disappoint you.

Scenic Gem in NH 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fantastic mix of long, short, open, wooded, and scenic shots near/over the river. What a fantastic par and tough shots throughout. Really challenging without being overzealous!
Hole 1 is an amazing start to the course* and hole 18 finishes so nicely.

I had my very first ace on Hole 12! So that made my round better. haha.

It was beautiful hearing the running water and throwing at it, and on the very next hole having the opportunity to throw OVER the water! Very serene when you take a moment to appreciate it.

There were more holes that I loved, but my favorites were definitely 1, 12, 13, 15?, & 18!

Cons:

1 is a great start to a hole, but more than half the time I wasn't entirely sure where i was throwing to. Hard to tell when you're so far away on the tee. Suggestion: Maybe add sign on tree (in gap) to let you know what direction the hole is. Otherwise, it was awesome.

Ticks. Mostly wood/dog ticks. Gross little buggers, but not the lyme kind. I am pretty sure my friend and I got most of them on hole 15(?) on the right side. That brush pile is unforgiving. Definitely lost a disc in there and I was watching it the whole time. No idea where it went. C'est la vie! But, the ticks are bad in there. Keep an eye out for them and use tick spray!!

I can't remember the number, but the hole that plays dog leg left and up a hill seemed to have been adjusted more than once, and the tee box looks like it was facing the first layout. I would like a couple cleaner lines on this (it's been a year, so maybe it's already happened)... the ground was pretty soggy too, so make sure you're ready for it.

Other Thoughts:

I am sad I only ever played this once. This is a beautiful course! I cannot wait to go back!

Great golf and great vibes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great atmosphere
- Well maintained
- Fantastic golf with excellent shot variety
- Circle tee-pads
- Great use of water features
- Just plain nice looking property
- Close to downtown Rochester and associated amenities

Cons:

- Tee-pads are crushed stone/gravel and prone to rutting
- Tick city during tick season(s)
- A bit lacking in on course amenities due to location
- The road in can be tough on vehicles (not a course con, but a fact none the less)

Other Thoughts:

Created by local designer and course guru Dennis Grzywacz of Acme Disc Golf, Salmon Falls reflects the love, sweat, and experience that has been poured into it. Set in the surprisingly beautiful woods of Rochester, NH, Salmon Falls DGC takes full advantage of the land with sweeping field shots, winding wooded fairways, and constant flirting with the Salmon Falls River. To get there is an adventure in itself, as the road leading into the course goes from paved to dirt, then from defined dirt road to meandering sandy path through a dusty wilderness. Dennis has placed marker signs to guide the way, but they aren't glaringly obvious and are at wide enough intervals that a first time visitor will begin to feel lost here and there. The sandy road is rife with divots and stones, so take it easy on your way in. Fortunately, as long as you follow the signs the club kiosk and parking area will present itself soon enough. Hole 18 will be apparent on the right side of the parking area and doubles as a practice basket when not in use. There is also an extensive field the is used for hole 1's fairway but that is large enough for out of the way driving practice as well. The field is left long during hay season and a central hub for bloodsucking arachnids during tick season, and as such is not always a convenient warm up spot.

Follow the signs to hole 1 and you're off to an excellent round (or two) of golf. From hole 1's open air bomb into the wood line to hole 17's punishingly long and tightly wooded lines, you'll get a little of everything in your coming round. Each drive is a unique look, and you'll have a blast trying to figure out which shots work best for you. While challenging, Salmon Falls is designed to allow multiple routes on each hole, and the large, circular tee pads facilitate this quite well. The flow of the course is well designed, and there is a good mix and distribution of the short, long, wooded, and open holes. Just when you start to tire of longer, wooded shots, SFDGC hits you with a short, more open par 3 followed by two tougher 3s that make you deal with elevation changes and tough greens. Tired of flirting with the water in the 12,13,14 stretch? Well no worries because it's time for the 500ft open plateau shot that stretches along the ridge that runs from hole 1's tee pad to hole 18's. Never are you playing more than 3 holes in a row that are at all similar, and it makes for a refreshing round.

Although the tee-pads have held up well, they're made of crushed stone/gravel and ruts have formed in some of them. Nothing devastating, but some drives will be affected if you take the most popular lines.

While it is usually content to lurk on the edges of the fairway or through a curtain of rough and trees, the Salmon Falls River is a common presence on many of the holes. Nowhere is the river more expertly used than on holes 12 and 13, which shoot out onto and then back from a peninsula formed by the river's 180 bend. 13 in particular is in strong contention for signature hole here with a daring par 3 that shoots over the river and uphill into the woods. It should be noted that Dennis and the locals are very good about retrieving and returning lost discs, and there's a better chance here of receiving your plastic back than at Bellamy Park or Squam nearby.

Anyone playing New England disc golf will know to keep a vigilant eye out for ticks, but Salmon Falls warrants a reminder. The secluded nature of the course combined with a proximity to clean water means that wildlife is prevalent. As such, so are the ticks that prey on said wildlife. When the field is long and ticks are in season, it's not uncommon to pick up 3+ of the little bastards by the end of the first hole. It's usually less bad in the wooded sections of the course, but not so much that you should relax your guard. I mention this not to scare anyone off, but to make sure that those looking to tackle the course in tick season are ready with countermeasures and vigilance.

When it's all said and done, Salmon Falls DGC is a prime course that will only get better over time. The land has an excellent steward in Dennis (and his Dad and canine companion) and looks better than the small crew of curators would indicate. A second set of equally challenging tees to help balance out any perceived "lefty" or "righty" bias is in the works, and eventual gold and rec tees have been discussed as well. The tees are cool while less than ideal, and the ticks can be a scourge, but in the end what it boils down to is that SFDGC provides excellent golf in a laid back, relaxing, New Hampshire atmosphere with good people. Do yourself a favor and take the ride over. You won't regret it!

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

I can't remember playing many courses that featured a river as well as Salmon Falls. Ponds, lakes, and meandering streams? Sure. But the river is the centerpiece here. It's not a disc-eating nuisance, and on most of the holes near the river it would take a bad shot or an unfortunate shank to end up in it. But if it's summer and you do land in the water, you'd probably take off your shoes, wade in, and maybe stay there awhile.
My favorite hole is the only one that truly throws over part of the river, hole 13, a gorgeous turnover shot over the water to an uphill approach. There are clear gaps but a bad shot will hit some trees and plop into the river (don't worry, there is a
bailout option that will leave you short of the birdie look).

There is no shortage of well designed holes. Hole 5 (I believe) has two distinct routes on a multi-throw hole. Bad shots can end up in the thick rough or the river, but in general this is a fun hole with a curvy fairway.

Hole 7 is a fun throw over a shallow pond to an uphill landing area before a dogleg right. Hole 8 has isn't so long but features a basket on a hill with a dangerous potential for rollaways.

Oh, and hole 1 is a great par 4 across an open meadow with two very different wooded routes to the basket on the approach.

While the course is mostly wooded, holes 1, 15, 16, and 18 are fairly open and exposed to the wind.

Navigation wasn't hard in most places with prevalent next tee signs.

Cons:

The wooded holes had a lot of cut branches in thick piles, and landing in these is not fun (can't imagine what you'd do if you were in a tournament, as your footing would be really unsafe).

There were a few too many long wooded holes here. Not a lot, but just one or two too many.

Tee pads are giant circular constructions, which is interesting, but they are all crushed gravel. I will say that they were in pretty good shape, but there were some divots near the ends.

The tee signs aren't great. I like how they are posted on upright railroad ties, but other than indicating the distance, they aren't useful. I really don't like signs that draw a straight line to the basket even when the fairway curves.

Other Thoughts:

I don't really know what this land is used for. But I ran into a guy (the owner?) next to a bright red schoolbus on hole 2 who said I should feel free to let my dog off the leash. That's my kind of place and kind of what I love about New Hampshire. No pretension or worries. Enjoy the river and the quiet. What a great property.

UPDATE: I initially rated this as a 3.5, and I'm not sure why. I'd prefer better tee pads, but the design, beauty, and fun shots here really stand out. This is a 4.0.

Pros:

This course made me feel like I had no idea what I was doing. Very well Marked and very challenging. Pin placement was well thought out. Beautiful hike while playing a great game.

Cons:

Lost two disc. One in the Brush and one in the river. You have to be very precise with your actions. Not a lot of room for error.

Other Thoughts:

I had left my windows opened and it had rained and one of the locals put plastic over my window controls. That was pretty awesome.

Very Fun and Isolated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course embodies everything I love about disc golf. The course feels miles away from any civilization, and after a pretty open first hole, the rest is a nice hike through the woods. The hole variety is great, with plenty of par 4s (even one par 5) and some shorter ace holes as well. There are some changes in elevation, but nothing too extreme. Most of the course runs along a small river, which is mostly scenery, but you do have to throw over the water once or twice. There is great signage pointing you to the next hole, and even though the scope of the course is massive, I had no problem navigating it my first time out. There are even benches on most holes.

Cons:

The only real cons with the course are fixable in time. There are signs on every hole, but some of them aren't perfectly clear. This is especially a problem on the longer holes where the pin is not visible. There were a couple times where based on the map, I thought I was throwing in a certain direction and it turned out I was off by about 50 yards or so. But this is obviously only a problem the first time out. A few holes have serious overgrowth and lots of pricker bushes. They are also pretty tight, and as I mentioned, heavily wooded. Generally I'm a fan of these types of holes, and I think it adds to the experience. But there are definitely a few spots where I would NOT want to lose a disc.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a very solid course, and it's hard to believe it's only one year old. I met the owner while I was playing and he was working to clear some of the fairways. I'm confident this course will only get better and better and I look forward to going back again soon. The entrance to the course takes you about a mile down a dirt road that starts to feel like the beginning of a horror movie, but don't worry, that's the right way!
