Technical Holes, Trees and Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Technical holes and a good variation of long and short
Concrete tee pads were nice (most holes now have them)
Signage
Good baskets

Cons:

In the rain the up and down paths are a little treacherous
Lack of fairways on some holes make it frustrating to hit a good line, even with an accurate throw
Missing some concrete tee pads, so the muddy ones are slick

Good Course, Bad Bugs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course replaces the Vandal and is about a mile from that site. It is a tight tree course with good use of the terrain to create tough holes without being able to make them overly long. It is very new but is being shaped fairly quickly and I like how it is looking. Holes wend through the woods and alternate between tunnel shots, pine picket fences, and shots that would be a tunnel on other courses that seem open by comparison. Nice variety and use of available terrain.
Signs are different from what I have seen, Wood burned planks with all the necessary info. Low tech but does everything they need to.

Cons:

Most of these have to do with age of course and I know they will get better over time. The Vandal was a well done course and I expect they will do the same here. This includes the tee boxes which are currently roughed in and a little hazardous. About tweaked my back on 1 which dropped more than I expected. The pads that are in are well done but short and raised enough that you can't start behind it. Tee on one of the back holes, I think 12 or 13 is set in an area behind a log that gives a n interesting look at the pin but under current layout makes a RHFH throw impossible and a RHBH throw hazardous. It looks like pad placement can fix some of this then they put in the concrete if they are careful.
A couple of holes are a little close to each other but not too bad with the notable exception of 14/15. The walkout to 15 goes along the blind part of the fairway of 14 where a RHBH is likely to land. If the pair following us would have had bigger arms we may have been hit. Could easily be redirected to safer path.
A couple of the holes are super short, 150' or less with tight doglegs to be able to fit in 18 holes.
Finally, the creek, while nice doesn't flow very fast so there were plenty of mosquitoes that we hadn't expected. Bring bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

I will miss The Vandal but this course looks to be a worthy replacement. It will be shady on hot summer days and is nicely different from other local courses.I wish them well getting it finished and look forward to playing it again.
I will raise rating as improvements proceed.

Great Piece Of Land They Have Here! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baldfoot is the new home of the former Vandal course. The baskets have been moved over here and a 18 hole course has been roughed in. This rural property is not Parks/Recreation owned but is instead Publics Works property and therefore comes with fewer restrictions.

It's a wonderful piece of property bordering the train tracks with mature timberlands, rolling hills, a little open area and a sweet little creek running through the center. There is a decent amount of parking near the road and a few rickety outbuildings which could be used for tourney headquarters.

A unique basket type sculpture greets you as you enter. It will gladly take your $1 donation to play the course. I'll download my picture as soon as I figure out how.

Course volunteers have plans to put in concrete tee boxes. I was shown pictures of the tee signs they are in the process of developing and plan to install in the future.

Currently the tee pads are just roughed in earthen areas and are by no means permanent. Same with the current temporary signs. But the current 18 hole design already features some really challenging and fun technical holes. I really enjoyed # 8 which has you throwing over the creek uphill to a basket which is currently hidden up and to the right.

# 12 is also special. You're teeing off from under a large Cedar tree and having to throw over a large branch. You have to keep your drive fairly low with some annie on it. It makes for a very unique hole.

Already one can see where a tremendous amount of cutting, clearing, trail and bridgework and engineering has gone into this course. And there is still much work to be done!

Cons:

When finished, it's still going to be mostly a wooded technical course. There won't be too many holes for the big arms to really air it out on. # 17 is 440' across an open fairway but that's the only big throw.

It's currently still very rustic with it's signage and tee pads.

After # 13, there was a scary ass creek crossing for me, a 63 year fat, old man. I'm sure you younger guys had no problems scampering across those skinny little trees laid across the creek but I was visualizing a splashdown. I'd prefer a more permanent bridge of sorts or perhaps a ferry.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course a lot. My rating of 2.5 will increase by 1/2 point when the signs go in and by another 1/2 point when the tee pads are installed.

I hope to get back someday and see enjoy and finished design.

UPDATE: A few years later and improvements have been made.
