Sandy Pointe: A cautionary tale

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I loved holes 2-7. I know not everyone will agree with me because these holes are some of the hardest to walk and play but they are very different from the rest of the course and remind a little bit of a more extreme course, something like the old Diamond X from years ago. Lots of elevation during this section throwing both up and down this rocky, rugged area. Be sure you are in good physical condition for this part as a slip and fall here might result in you falling to your death if you land on the rocks below. We saw many people skip this section and went from hole 1 to 8.

The rest of the course is a park course with grass most of the way except for the sandy area near the swimming hole. Lots of different variety here with distance and shot shape and even a few par 4 holes and some ace runs mixed in. After the rugged section there is still some rolling hills for elevation while also trying to find your way through the trees and bushes and also sometimes the picnic benches and volleyball courts and parking lot but more on that in the cons section.

Cons:

First off safety is a concern. Like I said above you have to make your way through other park users at times including joggers, people having a picnic, using the benches, playing volleyball, etc. and there are lots of other users here at least when I was here on a Sunday afternoon. The other and biggest safety concern for me is that many holes cross each others fairways or green and also several holes play over or near the parking lot. Not sure who thought it was a great idea to have island holes with the car parking as OB but boy is that a bad idea. The place as busy when we played and several cars were parked in the "fairway" while also people were coming and going making these "island" holes near unplayable. REALLY. BAD. IDEA.

The number of holes and the room available to make a safe course is also a concern here. It feels like that needed to make the magic number of 18 which is a big pet peeve of mine. I won't go into my whole rant about it, I'll just say I'd rather less holes that are safer and better versus more holes that are not that. If they condensed a few holes or took out some of the more egregiously unsafe holes and went to a number that works it would improve my overall thoughts and rating of the course.

They close the gate at 4:00pm like clockwork. The ranger came by and told EVERYONE at around 3:30 that he was closing the gate in 25 minutes and that if you are parked in the lot when the gate is closed you are fined if they have to open the gate for you. You pay $7 to play the course, I feel like I should be able to play until dark and not be hassled and treated like a criminal and kicked off 3 hours before dusk.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really interesting course in the Boise area. Some of these holes look like they belong on a different course they are so different than what the rest of the area looks likes. I enjoyed myself here despite some of the issues the course has. Overall I would recommend this place but maybe hit it up during the week as it was much harder to play on the weekend than I thought it was going to be in October.

Variety of holes makes for good times 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Combination of a grassy parks course alongside a handful of rugged and steep holes with a lot of elevation change. Good layout for the available space. A little something for everybody.

Cons:

As a first time player, we threw on the wrong pin as another group was also throwing on the wrong pin coming the other way. A few of the holes intersect around hole ten. Not a huge deal once you know which is which.

Other Thoughts:

One could complain about the lack of course markings but its a seasonal course so it can be forgiven. The fact that somebody was willing to allow the course at all is a win, because it may be the best course in town, especially after the desecration of the Ann Morrison Park course.

After having played a dozen times since I originally posted. I'd like to make some suggestions to whomever manages the course...

Hole 4 - Add OB left side at the cliff edge for the length of the hole. Its likely you would only need to mark the line during tournament play. There is a relatively well defined natural edge that can be used for casual play.

Hole 5 - Same cliff same problem, Make this hole an island hole (more of a peninsula) with a drop zone. Suggest the drop zone be placed uphill creating a tricky death putt for the brave while encouraging the conservative layup for most.

I am not an environmentalist by any stretch, but you need to keep people from scrambling up and down the dirt cliffs to the left of 4 and 5. By adding the left side OB on 4 and making 5 an island hole there would be no reason for people to climb up and down the dirt faces to retrieve their discs. They could collect their rogue discs when they swing back around for holes 6 and 7.

Hole 12 - There is an opportunity to add some interest to the hole. Hole 12 could easily be converted to an island hole with a dropzone. At about 180 feet off the tee, the adjacent parking lots pinch to a narrow 20-foot wide area that could be marked (a stake on each side) as the boundary for the island.

Great winter course (closed summer) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a great combination of long drive holes and short technical ones. 2-7 are played with great elevation change along the hillside next to the park. If playing before the water is drained from the swimming area there is a large water hazard to play around.

Cons:

In park holes get a bit monotonous. Lack of signage make finding the tees a bit tricky. No cell service out there so if you're going to take a course map with you, download it BEFOREHAND.

Other Thoughts:

No pets from May 1st to October 1st. $5 park fee if you don't have a parks pass ($10/year in Idaho, totally worth it).

Sandy Point is excellent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots, especially with the addition of 2-8 up on the hillside. Great use of asphalt as OB. Makes some gimme type holes a bit more challenging. Makes you think before just trying to rip one up to 18's green.

Hole 16 may be one of the best holes in Boise. Long, uphill, and low-ish ceiling. It plays like a ball golf hole, you really need to pick a landing spot that gives you a good upshot to the pin. If you get greedy it is real easy to bogey or worse.

Cons:

Hole 2 is one of the worst holes in Boise, along with 9 on lydle blue. The super blind drive through a small gap up to an area covered in brush. . . . Last time I played I saw what looked like stakes for an alternate pin up the hill a bit. This makes the hole so much better and probably only reduces the average score of the hole a couple 10's of a stroke.

Other Thoughts:

So glad that this course is available while the swim area is closed. One of my faves, try to play every chance I get.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- This course makes great use of the available land
- Variety of lines available on most holes
- A couple of ace runs, a couple over 450, and everything in between
- Distances listed on most tee stakes
- Six holes in the more rugged hills that get you away from the grassy park feel
-

Cons:

- All grass/natural tees
- Little to no signage directing flow in the grass holes
- Flow is terribly confusing, not intuitive by any means
- Playing over/through the parking lot on multiple holes

Other Thoughts:

This course is only open in the winter, as it is a popular beach spot in the summer.

Holes 1, 7-18 are in the grassy area of the park, holes 2-7 are above the entrance road in the more rugged desert terrain. The difference in these holes are night and day. It is easy to skip from 1 to 8 if you're not up for the hike. Hole 2 is a straight up the hill blind shot over nasty undergrowth, spotter recommended.

There are holes where you are throwing into near other fairways, but as of this review it is rare to see more than 2-3 groups playing this course at a time.

If you have not played this course before, make sure you have a map, because you will not figure out the flow after hole 10.

Great Winter Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Offers the best of the local courses. Park setting with some elevation changes and a longer more challenging desert course.

Cons:

Winter weather could make some of the newer holes quite challenging. Bring hiking boots for sure
