Schlanger Park Course Is Enjoyable But Has Flaws! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Previous reviewers have said that this is the best course in Pittsburg. I have to respectfully disagree as I have played a couple of excellent courses in Pittsburgh, Schenley Park and Knob Hill and am looking forward to getting to Deer Lake and Moraine State Park someday. Oh wait! You're telling me that I'm not in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but instead I'm in Pittsburg, Kansas? No wonder so many folks around these parts are talking about the Chiefs and their QB, Patrick Mahomes II?

Okay, now that I've cleared up that minor issue, I guess Schlanger Park DGC might be the best here in Pittsburg, KS, it might be since I didn't get to the other course in Pittsburg. Schlanger starts beside the skate park and the dog park. There is a small kiosk here as well as garbage can and picnic table. The tee signs are on the small side but functional. The tee pads are nice sized concrete and the baskets are a pretty yellow, Monkey Trap model.

Right away, I wasn't a fan of # 1. It's 458' with the basket in a dogleg left position and set very close around a neighbor's yard. This yard is not fenced so many players will end up cutting this corner and playing through this guy's yard. This is just not a smart design. #2 is 339' and your fairway keeps getting narrower and narrower until it's only about 10' wide near the basket. # 4 is a very cool little 210' tunnel shot down an old raised road. Previous reviewers all seem to mention this as a highlight here. Both # 3 and # 5 tee off from this neat little hilly area which makes for an excellent tee pad location.

Cons:

I screwed up at # 6 and initially played to the # 7 basket playing with the concrete wall on my right. I finally got # 7 played correctly but then was lost trying to play # 8. And because I screwed # 8 up so badly, I was in the wrong area for 9. I think I finally got back on track at 10. I had the excellent on-line map with me but tried not to bring it out in the wet, rainy weather. It would have saved me a lot of stumbling around!

I don't think I would ever play this course that I wouldn't cheat on 13 and 14 by teeing off on 13 and then walking the short distance and teeing off the cool raised platform for 14 thus playing both holes simultaneously.

There are a lot of confusing walkouts here, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, 11 to 12 and 14 to 15. They look so clear to me now as I look at the map but trying to get through the course quickly in the rain, they mostly baffled me.

The # 1 basket is set too close around by the neighbor's yard. Just a bad design.

Some missing signage on # 17 and 18. There were other signs that were difficult to decipher.

The course just doesn't have a good flow to it. Too many long walkouts combined with some backtracking issues.

Other Thoughts:

Once I determined I was in Pittsburg, KS and not Pittsburgh, PA, the fog seemed to lift. Perhaps attempted to tackle the course (in the rain) and discovering the layout and flow was fairly confusing was problematic.

Maybe playing courses in three states (Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri) in one day could confuse anyone. Maybe the three time zones changes was the problem. Maybe, I just picked the wrong day to kick my methamphetamines habit. And trying to breath through my eyelids never helps.
