Open Hillside Disc Golf

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 10, 2022 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

~ The main feature of this open course in a town park is the hillside: you play up, down and across it until you reach the bottom for the finishing holes.

~ Designers did their best to find obstructions in this wide open park - mostly by tucking a few baskets into the bordering woodline

~ Basic signage: hole #, length, with an arrow pointing in the direction of the basket (helpful because several baskets are visible at all times). Signs on stamped metal, mounted on sturdy metal posts - looks like the highway department created them

~ This course is really just "baskets in a field." It will be a curiosity for picnickers, dog walkers, playground users and others who may wander into the line of fire while sharing the park

~ Short course that\'s good for beginners: the thickly-wooded property edges give a little bit of hazard on a few holes; you have to learn how to compensate for elevation, and a few baskets on mounds provide the possibility of rollaways. There\'s lots of opportunities to create longer safari-style holes as beginners get more control and experience

~ If you\'re anything other than a beginner, this course is just for field practice or bagging. Easy to hit along with Denver and Elizabeth Township

Shoe-horned between highways

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty views of the mountains as you drive up. The course works its way across, down, and back along a sloping field. About a third of the holes slope left-to-right, a third slope right-to-left, two holes are downhill, and one is uphill. Two holes throw across a small bowl-shaped area.

A few holes have baskets set at the edge of the tree line (but see cons). This and the mild elevation changes represent the most interesting features of the course.

Simple white tee signs are mounted on a metal post and list hole number, distance, and direction. No hole map, but none are needed because you can see every basket from the tee or nearby. Heck, you can see most of the course.

Silver-painted baskets were mounted level and caught well. Grass was well mowed when I played. Nicely landscaped port-a-pots located by the parking lot.

The course was laid out nicely to avoid other park activities.

Cons:

The course is short and wide open, although a few baskets are set at the edge of the tree line. This brings the next con into play:

In late September, disc-eating rough was thick and poison ivy was prevalent. Rough is not hard to avoid but it did discourage ace runs on a few holes. This seems like a shame because ace runs are the main attraction on a short, open course like this.

The park is shoehorned between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a fairly busy local road, so the sound of traffic roaring past is ever-present.

Other Thoughts:

Shoeneck Park is a quick bag, with holes averaging less than 200' and ranging from 150' to 250'. I played it with a putter and a mid.

Natural tees were in good shape and perfectly adequate for the short hole lengths. I had the course to myself when I played on a lovely Friday afternoon, so I doubt this course gets a ton of traffic.

If you are looking for a quick detour off the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Shoeneck Park is about 5 minutes from Denver Memorial Park, another quick-playing niner.

The sign says Schoeneck Park, but I suppose Shoeneck is catchier.

Learner's Course in a Good Way

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Shoeneck is a nice little DG course whose greatest asset is its proximity to other beginner courses. It's literally less than five minutes straight down the road from Denver Memorial Park, another learner course, and a bit more than ten minutes from the Elizabeth Township course, a beginner level course.

Whereas Denver is completely flat, with a mix of holes both forest and open; Shoeneck is almost completely open, well-mowed with a mix of flat and downhill holes as it takes place on a gentle downward slope.

I went there at around 5pm on a nice cloudy late June day with perfect temperature and weather (73 degrees) and the park was still empty. Maybe just a Tuesday thing, but probably not.

I did appreciate how easy but slightly varied the holes were. And the fact that, if I wanted to do a second or third round through, the course and sparse crowd made it amenable to hole combining in all sorts of ways.

There are just tee signs with a direction arrow/distance and grass as tees. I couldn't identify the make of the baskets but they had the tallest cages I have ever seen. Otherwise a-ok. The setup here is just fine, concrete tees might actually be a detriment considering the short hops and skill level involved.

There's a close-up view of Interstate 76 and traffic on the bottom most holes, #8-9.

Cons:

If I had a complaint, it's that the few holes that do take place on the treed perimeter, the discs are a bit easy to lose there - the brush is thick and nasty with thorns, brush, and vines.

Like #3, downhill with the tree line immediately left, basket cut into the treeline niche. Against my better instincts after throwing a leopard that turned over right, I redid my tee shot with a Roc that faded somewhere before the basket in the brush. Despite knowing where it was generally, I couldn't locate it.

Other Thoughts:

1: Short 177ft straight on.
2: Starts near street. 206ft slightly downhill, left to right slope.
3: Downhill, treeline immediate left entire way. 244ft. Basket hidden.
4: 204ft across field. Flat but right to left slope.
5: Another field crosser, 209ft. Starts in basin, giving path a hump.
6: 193ft Downhill akin to #3 but with Basket on mound away from trees.
7: Short 147ft skip across a (now dry) detention pond to a slightly uphill basket.
8: Treeline left. 153ft to basket nook.
9: 154ft ft straight on. Open.

Out of OOOOO discs or XXXXX strikes.

Terrain: Oo - Passable. Nothing exciting but well-mowed. Treeline could be cleared of nastiness.
Execution: OOO - Good but low effort needed to install. At this level, it just means nothing major was screwed up.
Upkeep: N/A. New.
Difficulty: O - It's a learner's course with learning distances. But rough on a few adds a bit in a bad way.
Fun Factor: OOo - I had a reasonably good time at this course and think it's ideal for teaching the game to a younger crowd or simply for someone wanting to have a low-fuss game.
Crowded: x. Was not crowded here at all. But my first and only visit.
Overall: OOo - A good learning 9er. If you make it a destination course, it'll be disappointing.
