Accuracy and Creativity Rewarded! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- This is a very well-designed course with ample room for each hole and very little chance of bumping into other disc golfers or pedestrians (though there are paths across some holes you have to keep an eye on).

- A variety of tight, technical, and open, long holes with a great mix of left and right doglegs and strategically placed--but natural--obstacles keeps you on your toes for every shot.

- Nice large wooded experience for being in an urban area.

Cons:

- Signage on the course could be improved. I've run into other players new to the course having a very difficult time successfully navigating.

- No practice baskets, warm-up area.

- Probably not the best beginner course. I say that even though I'm relatively new to serious play and enjoy the course. But I have played other courses as difficult, or more, when I was brand new to the sport and it was so frustrating as to not be fun.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun, challenging course that puts a premium on accurate throws and creative shot-making.

As a relative beginner, I still find it tough challenge; both from a distance and accuracy standpoint. But that makes it all the more rewarding when you nail a shot.

This is one of the premier courses in Washington State and with the ongoing maintenance and improvements that Chainbangerz Golf Club provides, it's only going to get better! They really want to develop this into a bona fide championship course.

Get ready to throw bombs... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well-Maintained
Concrete Pads
Does not favor BH/FH players
Challenging layout... this course is indeed long
Course Layout is relatively easy to follow (Map at Park Entrance)
Playing disc golf while jets fly over you is a pretty cool experience

Cons:

Lack of elevation
Not a beginner course
Small Parking Lot @ Entrance

Other Thoughts:

Bring your A game when you come to Sea-Tac. This a tourney caliber course requiring large and accurate drives (This could be a pro or con depending on your style). Each hole has a decent fairway, however an errant shot will punish you dearly. It's not so much the course's length that makes it difficult but the rough in addition to it makes it that much more challenging. You'll use a steady variety of shots throughout the day. I feel good making par on most of these holes since I don't have a huge arm. However it's well-maintained and I will continue to go back and improve my score. Plus I just enjoy the quiet scenery with the occasional jumbo jet flying right over you. (The course sits right off of the Sea-Tac Runway)

Planes, rains, and tree shots 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

•Nice map available to help a first-timer.
•Nice large concrete tee-pads.
•Great layout; some courses send you marching all over the place to the next tee. Here the flow was pretty logical - nice.
•You want challenging? Lots of tight fairways, strategically placed trees, etc.
•Some of the best views of ginormous low flying airplanes you'll ever get.
•Opportunity to shoot left, right, straight with accuracy.
•Strange remnants scattered throughout.
•Accessible by bus, the 132 to Burien, about 40 minutes from downtown.

Cons:

•Flat. Not much you can do about it.
•Drizzly Seattle weather. Again, it is January, so again not a flaw of the course.

Other Thoughts:

I got lucky and beat the rain today. This course starts out deceptively easy, and just gets harder - some of my problems were due to unfamiliarity, not knowing where the baskets were.

Still, if there was a tree in the way, I nailed it; if there were bushes as an obstacle, I landed behind them. The course designer would have had a ball watching me.

The back nine really kicked me up and down the backside. Seeing where the 18th pin is, and where I had to go to catch my bus, I replayed 2-9, and it went much better, parring pretty much every hole, planning shots and actually executing them. Maybe I was just getting warmed up.

I'd love to return and play this course again in sunny warm weather. That happens in Seattle sometimes no? :)

Toughest course in town 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Challenging
-Nice Tees and Baskets
-Hardly ever crowded
-Interesting location (airplanes overhead, reclaimed neighborhood)

Cons:

-Lack of signage/next tee signs makes navigation tough for first timers
-NOT a beginner friendly course
-No bathrooms/trashcans
-Not city/county maintained (very often anyway)
-Parking is scarce, but there is plenty of on street parking - and I've heard prowling is/can be an issue

Other Thoughts:

This is easily the toughest course in Seattle and one of the tougher courses I've EVER played overall (and I've played a few over 30 years). For first timers it can be very difficult to locate next tees, the best indicator is electrical tape on most of the baskets giving you the general direction of where you should head next. There continues to be talk (it's been going on for about 10 years now) of expanding this course out to 27 holes and making it into a true destination/world class course, I hope that happens. In its current state though it's a soul crusher of a course. The first 13 holes are pretty fair, but the last 5 are just ridiculously tough. Not just long, but TOUGH. Go into the rough and you're going to take a stroke just to get out. It's gotten a lot better over the past couple of years as side veg gets beaten down and losing a disc isn't a sure bet as it used to be, but it can still happen. If/when it's expanded out to 27 holes I'd like to see these tougher holes spread out and not lumped together at the end so that when you finish you're just deflated. The course plays just north of the SeaTac runway, so you can have planes taking off or landing just a couple of hundred feet overhead, then just as you've forgotten about it you'll hear the backwash cracking overhead, which is pretty cool. The course is constructed on reclaimed housing neighborhod which was demolished 20+ years back because it was too close to the airport and is now being reclaimed by nature, so you'll find interesting architectural and non-native trees/plants on the course which is interesting. The course is managed by chainbangerz and works with the county to maintain/mow the course, I think it's only done twice a year, so depending on when you go, it can play very differently. Trash cans are few and far between and are maintained by good sam. Please pack out what you bring in! Print out a map or find a guide for your first time and bring all your discs, as you're going to need every shot in your bag, and likely a couple you don't. While this course lacks almost ANY amenities (trashcans, restrooms, water, signage) - what it does have is a great layout, solid pads and baskets and ALWAYS a challenge. Playing here will certainly elevate your game - if it doesn't break you first.

Glad I Finally Made it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a monster, tough course. It is well established and feels like a mature, worn in course. State Championships were last weekend so I was seeing the course at it's best and I was impressed.
Tees are cement, a good length to be comfortable for longer throws, and well placed. Pins are placed so there are always lanes to get to them, but it is seldom easy. Fairways are long and tight and shots into the rough are punishing.

Cons:

Some of the things that I really expect to see on top courses are missing here. Tee signs are missing on quite a few holes, pins aren't numbered, no bathrooms.
The map at the kiosk seems off on some of the back 9 and didn't list pars.
Kinda a con and a pro are the very thick roughs. Add to difficulty but I lost a bright orange disc that should have been fairly obvious. Looked for an hour, just gone. Not unusual for western Washington courses.

Other Thoughts:

I knew this was a longer course so waited until later in summer and I was glad. I was having an off day but even on a good one would have been happy with a +8 or so. Have been told the neighborhood is questionable but I was by myself, saw more dog walkers and joggers than disc golfers and all were polite.
Despite lack of some polish I really liked this course and look forward to playing it again, but won't bring any noobs. Bring your A game, this course will test it.

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

An awesome course overall with huge technical shots that require alot of different BIG confident shots to make par.
I love the cool old foundations and steps to no where showing the signs of an ancient neighborhood. The course has a vary cool feel to it you can see where peoples plants that used to be landscaping borders have been used beautifully as obstacles. Something about it being in a ghost neighborhood gives it a special quality.
The whole park is beautiful and i very much look forward to the next tounrney.

Cons:

Lack of any big elavation change makes for mostly flat play with few minor exceptions. Although some holes still have that epic feel to them. The only real con about this course is its relative distance to where i live, like 85 miles. :(

Other Thoughts:

Me and my partner were happy to get 8 over par on two rounds of play on our first time playing the course. Seeing the local DGC sceane made the experiance that much better, super sweet for sure.

Tough but rewarding 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Nice layout. Some people say it favors a lefty but it's fairly balanced without any holes intersecting each other.
-Not crowded. Other local courses get the majority of play probably because Seatac is so difficult.
-Some holes have nice wooden benches.
-Sheltered from the wind because it's somewhat enclosed and flat.
-Fun and challenging. A three on some holes(12,14-18) feels like a solid birdie and many people consider a two to be more impressive than an ace on most other courses.

Cons:

-Signage, it could be better but there is some vandlalism on the course. Not all the distances posted are accurate and it can be tough to navigate for the first time.
-No restrooms. There are some restrooms by the baseball fields north of the course and some south of the course by the soccer/baseball fields but don't bank on it, they most likely won't be open.
-Parking. There are only six stalls in the lot by tee one but there is plenty nearby along the road. Unlike other reviews I would try to park in the lot to help minimize a possible break in.
-Many fairways have walking trails intersecting them.
-No practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

-The jet wash from the airplanes (flying directly overhead) can be loud and affect your shots.
-The course designer calls every hole a par three but many holes play much tougher.
- There are several fields south of the park if you need to air out your arm before your round.
-Barring a windy and wet day, this course plays easier during the winter months.
-Course plays on an old housing development so you might find some old foundations and random slabs of concrete throughout your round.
-There are future plans to make improvements on this already solid course.
-This in not a beginner course. Sometimes I finish a round feeling defeated, but I always come back to try to reach that elusive 54.

Hell of a Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I thought this course was a blast to play, and the layout of the course was excellent. There are some really challenging holes, and some holes that are pretty easy birdies as well. No hole looks the same, and the layout uses the land provided perfectly.

Cons:

There is not a whole lot of negatives to say about this course. I played it in the dead of winter, and it was as dry as a bone, I was able to find my way around pretty easy for my first time there, and my two year old son was able to walk around the course just fine with no problems.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for all skill levels, but definately would not call it easy. I would highly recommend playing it if you have not played it before!

True Pro Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Front nine is challenging, but gets you warmed up before facing the extremely difficult back nine. The front nine has some shorter holes, but will throw in a difficult dogleg like #7 at you. It's a great course to practice at because you will use every disc in your bag and every technique that you know at some point while playing here.

Cons:

The park can get overgrown in late summer, making it almost unplayable. It is a high crime area and car prowls are far too common. Park on the street in plain view and you won't become a victim.

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course and it's fun and can be frustrating at the same time. If you practice here other courses will seem easy.

Tough but sweet course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is really my local go-to course. I play this course more than any other. There are almost never wait times on any of the tee, in fact sometimes the course seems almost deserted. The front nine (really 10) are well laid out and approachable for beginners. The back nine are where the course starts to become a monster. Some of the holes are so long, it's like drive, drive, medium shot, putt, if you're lucky.

Cons:

As many people have said, this course is not in the best neighborhood. You get homeless people around the course, especially the pad for #14. I've never had any run-ins, but it can get sketchy, play with a partner and you should be fine.

The holes can be very discouraging for beginners or anyone without a straight drive (that includes me :( ). Also, the playability of the course varies tremendously on whether the course has been maintained recently or not. Both the grass and brambles can make this course very difficult, and there are areas on holes that discs should never go.

Also I play as a par 3 course (since there are really no markers on any of the pads), really some of the holes should be played 4 or 5 (I'm looking at you #14)

Other Thoughts:

Overall this park has a very laid back vibe with some very challenging holes. I've heard people say Downriver is harder, but for my money this is the hardest course in Washington.

First Course in Seattle Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I recently moved out to the Seattle area and heard about this course. It was definetely a course to play if you are an intermediate to advanced player. Great course which can make you a little frustrated at times. Patience is definetely a virtue. Great mix of shots that can you can birdie as well as holes where you need to relax and play smart. The beginning of the course you can definetely birdie most of the holes, but accuracy and a long throw are needed. The second half of the course requires to be technically sound.

Cons:

The one thing that really bothered me about the course was knowing where to go after each hole. Many of the tees are absent which can leave one confused if playing for the first time. Also when I played a lot of the course was not mowed so it was hard to find some shots even though they landed in the fairway. Also there are not any restrooms/water fountains.

Other Thoughts:

Being the first course I've played in Washington, I am very happy. Challenging course that can be unforgiving. I would suggest playing with a partner, especially if you are not an adnvanced player. A pro course for sure that is a lot of fun. Bring a map of the course and maybe a coat for the rain and enjoy a really fun course.

If you play this course regularly you will improve your game, and you can't say that about a lot of courses.
The course is set on what used to me a subdivision check out the old foundations, ect.

Cons:

Vandalism is somewhat of a problem. Some holes might be hard to navigate to and from, but there is signage on most holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course really is a par 59 or 60 course, opinions are a many.

TwoFace 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pro's:

Test of the mental game - I absolutely love the way this course has two distinctly different sides, each with its own personality. The front side tests your ability to "go for it" and rack up some birdies while the back side tests patience and damage control.

The front 10 are all par 3s which vary in difficulty from hole 1 which is a 300' relatively open hyzer to hole 4 which is a long and somewhat tight, low ceiling & winding fairway (this hole probably averages about 4 strokes).

The front side is the optimistic side - your drives can be big and bold. Little trouble is found on most of the birdie holes (1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10), but all of these require very skilled shots to get 2's and bogeys are easily be found on any of the front 10 holes with a poor drive or upshot.

Heading into the back side, you hopefully have tallied up enough birdies to counter the bogeys which are likely on their way. Upon reaching hole 11, the course demeanor immediately changes. If the front side were described as "be here FOR birdie", the back side would be "be here OR bogey".

Hole 11 is a high bombing right to left shot that plays easier for a big lefty/sidearm. However, if you don't have a big arm, you will be navigating many short pines to find good placement for par. If you haven't reached the obvious landing zone, you'll be navigating a lot of trees and a fast green that slopes away from you on the upshot.

Similarly hole 12, the first par 4 of the course, requires a medium range hyzer through woods to a landing zone which sets up for a low-ceiling midrange or putter shot to an enclosed green. The drive and approach by themselves should be quite easy in isolation, but combining them both on this hole makes it a challenge to get a 3.

From hole 14 onwards, you have almost 0 chance of an eagle 2 and also little chance of running all five holes without one or several 4's or 5's. Each of these holes requires both a well-placed drive and a great upshot for 3. These holes can slaughter a great round. Going in you can be 5 or 6 under par and still come out at or above par with a few bad shots.

Tees/Baskets - The baskets are a mix of Mach's and homemades which are all high quality and catch well. The concrete tee pads likewise are very high quality.

Luck - I put this in the pro's section because there are a few holes where luck is required; however, these are holes where you can create your own luck in the long-run. Hole 14 is probably the most complained about hole on the course - with some legitimate reason. You drive from an elevated tee across a mostly open field for about 280 feet and then enter tight woods with little visible fairway. However, it should be noted that there are distinct pockets and landing areas that make getting a 3 more likely. Yes, you will get bad kicks on good drives, but in the long run the more often you can find the high percentage areas, the better your average score will be.

Navigation - It is fairly easy to find your way around this course and there are usually tee signs to direct you to the next hole. Even if these are removed from time to time, a first-timer should be able to find their way around.

Variety - To score well, you'll likely be throwing a large variety of shots both off the tee and to save pars. There are several great sidearm or backhand favoring holes, several which require high booming shots, several low-ceiling, and several which are well suited to a controlled or distance roller.

Maintenance - This can be a pro or a con depending on when you visit. So far this year, every time that I have played this course, it has looked great. I know the volunteers down south are doing A LOT of mowing, weed whacking, and general maintenance to keep this place in check. From what I hear, in past years the course is barely playable in the summer because the fairway grass is so tall.

Jet wash - Because you are so close to the airport, on some days you'll see/hear/feel the effects of plane jet wash which is pretty cool. You do learn to hold up on shots for a few minutes after a really close plane because the ensuing mini-tornado can wreak havoc on your shot!

Cons:

Vandalism/Trash - This park is not in the best of areas and because parts of it are quite secluded (like #14's teeing area) you'll find a lot of vandalism and trash from bored kids. In addition, lately there is a tree hacker who is going to town trying to make the course fit his game. The course is pretty resilient but the continued chopping is starting to ruin some of the fairways L

Skill level - My opinion is that this course plays great for the silver and lower gold rated players, but probably not to the elite professionals. Most of the par 4's probably seem quite simple and somewhat boring to the elite player but still mostly out of range for realistic eagle attempts. All levels will certainly be challenged on some of the holes out here but the elite pro's will probably find holes like #12 #15, or #16 somewhat boring while players below 1000 will find them challenging and fun. This course will also likely frustrate players who have not yet developed a consistent, controllable shot. There is a lot of rough out here and it would not be fun to walk through it for an entire round.

My one hole design beef - two really tiny issues on hole 18. First of all, there is a paved path which runs along the left side of the fairway for the approach shot. Currently, across the path is played as IN bounds for reasons which I cannot understand. It may help to lay out the shot: On your drive, the righty must throw a low ceiling hyzer or skip shot which hooks hard left around a patch of thorns to a clearly defined placement area. The second shot is usually a high booming turnover which stalls and drops over the top of the basket. Poor approach shots or shots attempted from outside of the landing area frequently lose turnover and fade left across said path. I think this deserves the extra punishment of an OB stroke so players will evaluate their ability to throw this shot safely from their current position. It will set up a risk/reward scenario in which poor placement on the drive necessitates safe play for 4 rather than a no-risk pump over the trees. Currently, good drive placement is being somewhat compromised by the lack of adequate punishers later on in the hole (reward/no reward). In addition, the path is clearly defined (no question about OB or not OB) and is used by pedestrians which poses a safety hazard as this approach is a blind shot.

My second tiny design beef is the little OB pond (about 4 feet by 2 feet) which is directly in front of the basket on 18. I think it is a fun and quirky little OB area but tends only to punish relatively good shots that are on target. I'd prefer a bunc'r type ruling for this rather than an extra stroke punishment on a good throw that gets unlucky. That's it! The rest of this course is pure gold IMO.

Other Thoughts:

If I were to recommend one course to play near Seattle on a trip through the area, I'd recommend Seatac. It is very well laid out, the most challenging, and easiest to find your way around on.

Caught in the Jetwash 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 27, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is one of the longest and most challenging courses in the state of Washington. The course par could realistically be set at a 60-62, as many of the holes play like par 4's. It's good to keep in mind that you will need both length and accuracy to score well, so beware that you cannot just crush every shot, as it can be gnarly if you are caught in the rough, and 5's will become common. The fairways are shaped primarily by woods and shrubs along the edges with grassy fairways, and a just enough of shrubs and trees in the fairways to force creative shot-making. This length plays more like ball golf in that it often requires 2-3 accurate shots to make it to the green for your putt. The course is mostly flat (unfortunately), but it makes up for it in length and difficulty level.

This spring they placed little green "next tee" arrows on the ground to help guide the way - suggest printing a map just to be safe!

Cons:

The jets overhead can be distracting, but once you accept their presence, it is fine.

Vandalism has destroyed many of the tee signs and litter can be a problem, but local volunteers have been placing buckets at the tees and been haulin' trash away - thanks!

Probably best not to play alone, as there was a recent incident where a disc golfer was robbed of his bag by hoodlums.

Not for beginners or people who don't like to walk far - it's physical, and some of the rough is disc-eatin'.

Other Thoughts:

There needs to be an update of the pars here, so that many won't leave this place cursing at themselves and the course. Of course, revamping the tee signs would be a good accompaniment as well.

I have upgraded my score by one full point, as when the course is in it's prime (like the Duel Nature tournament I played this weekend), it is really a marvel. They have improved the "next tee" signs and the fairways and rough are so much kinder than they used to be.

This course is so long and so by itself that its as if you are in a maze that you must disc golf your way out of. On number six I drove too far off the fairway and I remember foolishly thinking that I was perhaps in another fairway and I should be careful. I wasn't, there is just no way. A designer could easily fit 72 holes on the amount of space that is dedicated to this park. A typical Seatac hole is well signed with a good tee pad. The typical hole has long fairways with a few trouble spots to avoid, maybe a big tree just off center or a group of bushes or vines. Long and straight is usually awarded off tee. Then it has a thinking mans approach shot, there is so many very mature trees and bushes that I mean this for any drive too. A drive that is left, right, or center of most fairways will have different sometimes very different approach looks. Finally the basket is guarded somehow by being in a unique basket area. Then you make an honest walk to the next tee to a completely different area in the maze. In short, I loved it.

Its my hunch that this place was once a neighborhood before the airport was installed. With so much mature, and weirdly open vegetation its only a few more hills and ponds away from being perfect. The course felt so secluded to me that I got the feeling that any random bush on any random fairway would be good enough for nature, or for lovers. I did see a few joggers and there was a few groups that played through, but to me they just felt like other people trapped in the maze.

Cons:

There was a moment at the end of the round where we all had a laugh at how big our scores were. A three here means that your arm is a cannon and or you are a lucky golfer. The variety on this course is long and longER. There were a couple of hilarious moments in which our foursome was lost and none of us seemed able to comprehend the map. It was like Spinal Tap aimlessly trying to take the stage. Other times because of the wildness of the vegetation it was all hands on deck to look for a disc that was only a few feet off course.

Then there are the planes. The first six holes I felt like I could never get used to the noise, that I was going to suffer hearing damage even though I used to play drums. The next six holes were spent having to suffer through awkward pauses as a plane powered through the air. The last six holes were like a seamless dance between ringing chains and pauses for planes, honestly its strange how fast you get used to it.

Other Thoughts:

Its my opinion that there is more shot variety at nearby Lakewood and that a beginner might get tired and frustrated here. After spending this much time thinking about my time here, I ache to play this course again. Right before I teed off number one, I got a recorded message telling me my flight was cancelled. It was cool being able to see all the Horizon Air flights and be able to signal to them how I felt about it. Its funny, when I fly into Seattle I always end up telling my new flight buddies about how I'm in town to play disc golf and I get to show off this course to them just before (and I mean just before) touching down.

Difficult but Beautiful Course by Sea-Tac Airport 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Exceptionally challenging course (also a con, depending on your skill level)
- Airplanes on landing path overhead (also a con if you don't like planes and noise)
- Wide variety of distances and defenses
- Beautiful park with paths, meadows, and a variety of trees and flora
- The front 9 are reasonable in length and vary in difficulty. Overall, 9 of the best holes to play in the state

Cons:

- Exceptionally challenging course (also a pro, depending on your skill level)
- Airplanes on landing path overhead (also a pro, if you like planes and don't mind noise)
- When the underbrush has not been cleared out things can be GNARLY! Lost my very first driver (Valkyrie) here
- Some holes are so long and defended you need to scout out the pin, and even then it doesn't help...
- You MUST bring a map. Print it, draw it, take a cell phone picture - whatever you need to do to navigate

Other Thoughts:

This course has some of the best designed holes I have ever played, and some of the longest most difficult best defended mind-boggling holes ever played. Single digits above par is a victory in my book!
