Great course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 21, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This review is not based on the back nine because I did not play it when I was there

Great atmosphere- I went to this course with a couple people who had never been there before and they were overwhelmed by the friendliness of the locals being that this course is not in the best part of Philadelphia.

Practice baskets- there were several. This accommodated to the crowd that was there when I played.

Well defined fairways- this course made had well defined fairways as well as tight but fair.

Creative use of elevation- they used what they had this park and used the elevation that they were given with the space very well.

Teepads- teepads were in good shape and provided good footing.multiple teepads on each hole providing some variety for the locals, as well as providing beginners through pros with tees to fit there skill level

Secluded-this park is only used for disc golf woods are fun and secluded.

Cons:

Tee signs-these were not clear and i found myself playing most of the red tees because I could not see the line to the basket

Adjacent holes were to close- fairmount park is huge! Yet I still found myself wondering if the guy on the next teepads was in harms way when I was throwing

Crowded- this place knots lays all year round will have at least one group on every hole

Other Thoughts:

This course is short, don't come here expecting holes where you can air it out. Most of the holes were short so a midrange can be thrown and you can still shoot well. I do not view this s a con because the course was built so long ago

Good course with older charm 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is a lot of fun and the people who maintain it are very creative. It is a true disc golf atmosphere here with multiple practice baskets, a campfire at the course entry and places to sit down on ever hole. Even though it is a shorter course, it was indeed a fun layout and the locals were friendly, I am from GA. The park is not tough to get to and has several tee pads per hole. I believe there were 4. Good Rubber Mat teepads throughout.

Cons:

I can't say a shorter course is a negative thing, but I did only tee off with something other then a Buzzz on one of the 27 holes. Not all the tee pads have tee signs and I found my self walking up a pad from the Gold tees to see where the hole was to be played. Several of the pads are right next to the previous holes basket and that was really odd and dangerous! The walk from 18 to hole 19 was not bad but the walk from 22 to 23 I believe was a random trail and it was muddy and wet as can. Some of the holes were just silly in my opinion, and some of the Gold tees just seemed to be squeezed in there with little regard for throwing lanes or fairness. The Red tees were solid as a played a few of those as well. The baskets of the first 18 holes were older and narrow.

Other Thoughts:

This course was indeed a lot of fun and I did thoroughly enjoy myself. I aced hole 18 Gold and that was fantastic!!! I did like the challenge of the Gold tees but I'd recommend playing Blue or Red instead for your first time out. I'm a 901 rated player and shot a few under from Gold's on the full 27.

Nice course in the heart of Philly! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 27 holes makes fro a great round of disc golf.
- The back 9 really makes you feel like you are not in Philly and makes great use of the natural area.
- The front 18 is pretty short and makes for a nice uncomplicated round.
- Multiple tee boxes can really change the way the course is played.
- Love the benches scattered around the course and the marked putting area.
- Great parking for the course.
- Great community for DG in the area.

Cons:

- Can be very crowded at times. Watch your throws and throws from surrounding holes.
- Hole signage needs to be updated and in some cases replaced. If this is your first time playing it can be hard to know where the baskets are.
- Some of the tee boxes are in need of repairs

Great all around course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 10, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Being that it's a full legit 27 holes, it provides a great opportunity for a plethora of types to play. Lunch break, swing by and play the back 9; Day trip, play the whole 27. Not too many trees compared to other courses.

Cons:

Could use some love to the tees and signs considering how popular the course seems to be.

Home base 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 10, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love that it is a unique open woods course although some could maybe argue that it is open enough with trees tall enough to be considered a blended woods/field course. 27 free holes is always a big plus. There are opportunities for various throws/lines that you wish to (or have to) use, with a few chances to air some out, but many shots you'll probably use a middy or fairway driver on, except a few big hyzer shots for line shaping. For a par 3 course, this is a moderately difficult to shoot under par, which I like. "Outback" has some crafty challenging holes tracing a protected field with a crumbling house seemingly from colonial times. Hole #25, which I refer to as "The Mound" because of the basket on top of the largest looking anthill in the world, has an incredible view of Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River, one of the best views in mid-Atlantic disc golf in my opinion. The Disc Alien lost and found is a fun, creative idea. Hole #20 from yellow/red tee has one of the thinnest most insane initial gaps that can turn your par 3 into a double bogey if you tree it--love it! Hole #13 from hilltop to hilltop over a woods valley is a great hole and a great memory for me (I hit the post and taunted my younger brother to beat that and he aced it, but he sadly passed away this spring but I will always thank hole #13 for that memory). Hole #2 is a thin fairway with a late bootleg uphill into the woods, making it a beautiful and difficult par 3. Hole #12 is also a super thin and long hole that requires a perfect second shot to par. Friendly people hanging around and selling discs and beverages. So many "chill" benches around the course. I can't say enough positive about this place.

Cons:

This course is the only course in the city of Philadelphia, so it can get crowded and because it has shorter holes on 1-18, it attracts inexperienced groups that can slow you up, but most people on the course understand the etiquette of allowing smaller and/or more experiences players to play through. It is also about time for a tee sign update. The tee signs really need to be improved and consistent. That is about it for the minuses. Baskets very close to subsequent tee pads so be careful--get your vocal cords ready for "FORE!"

Other Thoughts:

Pretty much the OG'est of courses! Pretty sure this was the 2nd course ever in the world. This course is one of the first I ever played. I started playing in 2002, and I was a Drexel student right around the corner from 2004-2008 so this has been one of my 3 home courses (Brandywine in DE and Nixon in Kennett Square are the other 2).

Control Game 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three nine-hole loops.

Three tee locations (blue, yellow, red; easiest-to-hardest) per hole.

Cons:

On the front eighteen, tees are often close to prior baskets, and some fairways being quite close to others.

On the back nine, higher chance of disc loss. Bit of a walk after 27 - past 20's tee, down 19's fairway.

Other Thoughts:

The course, playing under and around the scattered trees and bushes of a public park not very far from downtown Philadelphia, definitely breaks into two distinct sections - the front-18, and the newer back-9.

Depending upon which tees you play, the holes on the front-18 will average ~225'-265' in length, while on the last-9, ~220'-300' are the ranges, so this course is definitely about control, not blasting away.

The holes on the front-18 hit you with the full array of control challenges - variable size windows, and their locations in the flightpath, subtle elevation changes, turns of various shape and severity. Numbers 13-14, with the thick amount of trees between the tee and basket, practically force you to go up-n-over the trees to have any chance for a deuce. Experienced player hitting their lines should have a plethora of birdy attempts, and even an initial miss will likely result in a par, as the holes are short, and being off-line means you're probably in a neighbouring fairway.

The back-9 offers a different type of challenge. Flightpaths are, for the most part, fairly straight, but the trees/shule forming the throwing lanes are thicker, so an errant initial throw will often be more difficult to recover from.

A really great course to work on your control game, but I'm not sure I'd want to play it when it was busy, unless I was wearing a helmet!

A Piece of History 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wooded and technical 27 hole course in the middle of Philadelphia with three possible tee areas (red, yellow, blue) at each hole. Short, yet challenging layout which utilizes all available space. Baskets, though older, work well. All holes are numbered, and the well-worn paths between holes make navigation pretty easy. Primary tee pads made of rubber and of sufficient length. Very good use of elevation on numerous holes and occasionally tight fairways add to the challenge. Benches exist at most holes. A practice basket, porta potties and nice information board with lost disc slot are located at the main entrance to Fairmount Park.

Cons:

There is some gimmickry here: a horizontal downed tree in front of hole 15, a basket secured into an uprooted tree, a 6 foot window to throw a drive through on hole 20, etc. None of these things should be a part of tournament play.To no one's surprise, graffitti and broken glass mark the course. Many holes play in tight quarters and errant discs from a nearby hole are not uncommon and require a "head's up". Secondary tee pads not in great shape, and colored stones designating all tee areas should be repainted and set in the ground. Can be very crowded at times. Will not appeal to the guy who wants to grip and rip all day.

Other Thoughts:

I do not like the city, but I'm glad I played here. Built in 1977, Sedgley Woods is a piece of Disc Golf History and has withstood both time and advances in disc technology. It has a decidedly "city" feel, with railroad tracks, the crumbling foundation of a house and the occasional odd and colorful character on the premises. An old seat from a van sits at one tee, and even the tee signs- asymmetrical painted concrete slabs- perfectly capture the environment in which this course sits. With 3 tee off locations at each hole and safari holes at various tournaments, there is no shortage of playing options. The "fun factor" here is tremendous, and a large and loyal club supports and maintains the course. Any serious DG'er must make a visit to Sedgley!

Classic Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 17, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are 27 holes and 3 sets of tees at each hole so you can play the holes differently each time. Nice Flypad Tee Pads at the longer tees. Good mixture of short and long holes, The back nine can be really challenging, which is a good thing in my book. There is a really cool scene at this course which makes it a lot of fun to be there

Cons:

Sometimes the tee to the next hole is close to the basket for the hole before it, and some of the holes are right next to each other so occasionally there are distractions and stray throws coming your way, but other then that, this course is great. People complain that the holes are short, but the reason it is like that is because the first 18 remain relatively unchanged from 1977 when this course was made. This course is one of the oldest courses in America, and was put in when people played disc golf only with a Wham-O Frisbee. If you play the red tees it makes the course more challenging.

Other Thoughts:

If you want to play disc golf in Philly and have an awesome time check Sedgley out

Sedgley Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- There's something to be said for having 27 holes of disc golf in Philly.
- Hard to lose a disc
- Atmosphere, It is always buzzing when the weather is near decent. I started playing alone, and by the 5th hole I had joined up with a couple of people and we played in a 4 some.
- Lots of options, 3 tee pads for each hole. each hole gives you a different line to hit so it tests your ability somewhat.
- If you want you can play the first 18 and not 19-27. I would actually suggest playing 19-27 if you don't want to play the full 18. It was less crowded when I went, a longer walk, but it was more challenging and more scenic at the same time.
- It's easily the best course within 30 miles of Philly... Maybe because it's the only course, but it is still nice regardless.

Cons:

- Fairly short, I always like my courses to have one or two holes that you can open up and throw one hard, there wasn't that here. Each shot demanded finesse and line shaping (which isn't bad, but gets frustrating having to throw every other shot around a group of trees or over some bushes).
- There are a few challenging holes but for the most part everything should be a pretty routine 3 unless you grip lock one OB or clank and early tree.
- Absolutely packed, I went in February and there was a wait on every hole on the front 18 (but there are benches and seating all over the place). Not really for 19-27 when I went (will probably be different in the summer). One group actually let me play through which was nice.
-Sometimes there were guys just practice putting on the cages I was teeing off to but they just kinda stood there and watched as I threw and continued after I was done? never seen that before. Also I felt like I was going to hit someone with every shot. The holes are so tightly packed that tee boxes are close to each other and also awkwardly close to pins.

Other Thoughts:

- I wouldn't bring your full tourney bag to this one. I did and dropped it off at the car after hole 9 (and played with 5 discs for the rest of it). It could easily be played with a mid or even a putter. I threw nothing faster than a teebird all day.
-A couple of homeless guys there (Not a con for me because I'm fairly used to it and it doesn't really bother me).
- Definitely a must play if your in the are, its a good course, very historic, and has good atmosphere, but I'd take my home course over this any day.

Good for such an old course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great disc golf scene
-Can play the front 18 with just a mid
-Classic course, one of the oldest in the nation
-The back nine and so much better than the rest of the course

Cons:

-The front 18 are very crowded. Tees and pins VERY close to each other.
-Can play the front 18 with just a mid
-Plenty of homeless just dicking around on the course, slowing up the flow of the groups playing
-The other courses close by suck so this is the best place to play in Philly and that is just sad

Other Thoughts:

Play it once so you can say that you have, but it's not a challenging course.
I can't deal with having to wait to play 18 because 5 guys not even playing any other holes are just unloading there bags at the pin. Have some disc golf etiquette guys.

Tight Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

A lot of narrow holes that will challenge your short and mid-range game. The change in elevation and creative use of the paths/woods made for a fun and interesting game. The multiple tees to throw from also lets you change up how you play the course.

Cons:

Several holes (in the first 18 holes) seem to be very close to each each other and nearly overlap. An occasional, "Fore!" can be heard now and then. Some of the tees from hole 19-27 were pretty muddy when I went. Can be a bit crowded.

Other Thoughts:

This was a great course, and its convenient for those in the Philadelphia area. I will try to visit this course more often; otherwise I have to travel a bit further towards Allentown or Tyler Park.

Pros:

Only course near Philadelphia within 20 miles. 3 different T pads. 27 holes! Great wooded shots, requires supreme accuracy especially on the back back nine.
Amazing disc golf scene, comparable to the west coast. Always heads hanging around looking to join a group, and someone usually sells discs on weekends and after four during the week.

Cons:

Holes on top of each other. No shots over 300 feet, maybe 2 or 3, but not by much. Crowded on weekends with beer drinking bafoons who don't respect the game.

Other Thoughts:

My home course. Not necessarily my favorite, or most played, but it is where I am from and I know it backwards and forwards!
People put this course down far too often. The first 8 holes were some of the first this country ever saw. That is very much like the entire history of Philadelphia, not the best city, but the first at a lot of everything.
The back nine is a relatively new addition. Still is empty anytime I want the freedom to throw, so I love it. It has some tight long shots, not typical for this course. Check it out. FOur holes have been there for years, then two were added about 7 years back, and then the combined the 6 extra holes, threw in 3 awesome holes, and Sedgeley is a full 27 hole course. I love it!

The back 9 is a lot of fun and alot more empty in comparisson to the open field starting on hole #1. Despite the occasional back up on the tees this course manages to use elevation, trees and other obstacles that most popel would be suprised to find in Philly. Pros:

Where do I start? This is my home course. I play an average of WAY too many rounds here a week (10+.) What this course lacks in legth, it makes up for in character (and characters.) With 3 tee positions on almost every hole, you really can play almost any layout you like and with any skill level. The front 18 were installed in 1977 and remain largely unchanged. 19-27 were installed in 2005 or so and are definitely more challenging. The course club, FSW, and volunteers do ALL of the maintenance at the course. Almost all improvements are paid for out of money generated by tag sales and disc sales proceeds. I have never played anywhere else that has even close to the camraderie of this course and these golfers. It should be a must play for anyone who is able. I recommend Thursday doubles as a great way to see what this course and these golfers are all about.

Cons:

Short, but a result of a design when wham-o was the primary disc manufacturer.

Crowded - Philly needs another course!

Other Thoughts:

There is a new long teepad on 22! Hopefully we'll be putting in new long pads on 23 and 24 soon!

Teepads-- Rubber, but not slick at all.

Pins-- all in good condition

Signage-- all in good condition and easy to follow nav.

Cons:

Ravine shots-- there are three on the first 18. the first makes sense. the second two are completely blind and heavily wooded, very difficult to see where lines would be for someone who is just playing for the first time.

Pros:

Ahhhh Sedgley.. A pro in itself... the best disc golf scene anywhere hands down. You could show up there at 8 in the morning on a Tuesday in February and there will be someone playing. 3 tag rounds each week with doubles following. The Course is maintained by the locals with money raised by selling discs. The second course in the country. 27 holes with the back back 9 being tough for anyone from the red tees. 3 tees on each hole so the "short" story doesnt have to be a true story. the front 18 are more finesse shots than power shots...all par 3's but the 2's are nice. Sedgley is a great course in the city that feels like you've left the city. If your close to the city you have to stop by and play it. the back back 9 are a little tougher to follow than the front 18 but well worth the extra steps.

Cons:

older course with shorter finesse shots through the front.. gets crowded..long walk between 24 and 25.

Review after 3 months of playing here. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I think one of the pros here is the amount of people that play on this course. There are always people by the basket of 18 often willing to play a few rounds with you (if you come solo). There are 3 different tees and one pin placement per hole. The course doesn't seem to favor RHBH or LHBH, there are clear distinct flight paths for all different throwers. The course was originally designed for big lids so the front 18 may seem short if played from the blue tees. The red tees may only be 10-15 feet further back from the blue tees but they can be extremely more difficult because of the new lines and angles. Without a doubt this course is worth it just because of the people that play here. There are tag rounds 3 times per week (Thursday 5 hours before sunset, Sat 12pm, Sun 11am, with 2$ doubles to follow). The course is very clean, and with the addition of holes 19-27 can really add a challenge to your round. The monthly tournaments are also fun, as you can't complain about 7$ entry for a chance to win some prizes and CTP's. The course is dog friendly and beginner friendly. There are usually people by the entrance of the course with a few boxes of discs for sale or to answer your questions. There are two practice baskets by the parking lot. Very dog friendly.

Cons:

For the most part the front 18 are easy par 3's. You can pretty much always salvage a 3 out of any drive. One of my cons is that there isn't any public water fountains. The closest place to get drinks is about a half a block away at a ball golf driving range, or 1.5 blocks at a water ice stand. Some people may not like the amount of people or how close the tee pads are from the previous holes pin. The porta potties smell like .... crap, and they are right by the parking lot (they do have a ladies only porta potty though).

Other Thoughts:

The front 18 can be played with mostly mid ranges and putters. There are rarely any chances to air out a big driver. This can be a good thing as it gives you a chance to get a lot of practice out of your short game. There seems to also be a lot of distractions while on the course since the fairways loop back and forth. Listen, if you haven't played Sedgley I would highly recommend it, especially if you are a new player. The course pros are extremely helpful and without a doubt have increased my skill exponentially over the past few months. I'll add more to the review when I think of it.

The Second Oldest Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 29, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I finally got to play this course all the way through for the first time. Every time I was in the Philly area, it was to cold to play. There are 27 holes of pure Disc Golf pleasure. There is a nice kiosk and a lost and found disc drop box near hole #1. There is also three practice baskets to warm up with before your round. The are three different tee positions to choose from blue, yellow, and red. The front eighteen is mostly wooded and short with very tight fairways and the outback is more open with some nice longer holes and a few dogleg left and right shots. The are a few chances of some Ace shots on a few holes on the front eighteen. The locals seem to be very friendly here and will help direct you around the course, even though there are maps available at the kiosk. There are rubber fly tee pads on most holes which has decent grip and the baskets are in good shape. They have weekly events throughout the year here if you want to get in on the tag leagues.

Cons:

I heard it can get really packed throughout the week so it is best to play early if you can because it can get really crowded. The navigation of the course can be a little tricky, so watch your signs as they will direct you to the next tee. The outback does not have any tee signs so watch for the hole numbers that are placed on some trees. Some holes don't have flypads and are just regular dirt tees. There should be some more trash cans throughout the course. I only seen a few at the beginning of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the holes on the front eighteen are really short because the course was designed for the regular frisbees. this is supposed to be one of the first disc golf courses ever installed on the Eastcoast and has a unique feeling when playing here, If you are in the Philly area, you should try to make some time to stop by and check it out. You should not be dissapointed.
