Good Ol Seven Oaks 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course. Has a variety of holes with slight elevation changes, narrow fairways, wide open holes, and very wooded. The course is very well kept up by local volunteers. You may even spot pro Will Shusterick playing here.

Cons:

The holes are moved around alot, which in most cases is a pro, but the signage does not always show an accurate placement of the basket. There is a clint tournament held by locals that is played every Saturday when we play that starts around 10AM, which can really crowd the course really quickly.

Other Thoughts:

Love the course. Play it weekly with a group of guys from work. Even though we play weekly, it still challenges us. Will always be near to my heart.

Frickin' Sweet 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This course was pretty awesome. I had just played Sharp Springs in Smyrna prior and LOVED it. So I was surprised when this one blew my mind as well. Granted, I still like Sharp Springs better, this is a solid 4star course. It had plenty of risk shots. Great layout. Not much walking from basket to tee. I had an amazing time. Good Discin'.

Cons:

Not many cons. A couple of tee's were close to prior baskets and you had to stay alert not to get hit, but not that big of a deal. A couple of holes through across or near a different holes green area. Other than that...4 Star!!!!!!!

Pros:

• Baskets are in good shape
• Tee pads are in good shape
• Benches
• Trash Cans
• Very well maintained course and very easy to find
• Good signage

Cons:

• No restrooms/water that I could find
• No map that I could find either, although only an issue on a few holes

Other Thoughts:

Tips
• Take water and use the restroom ahead of time

Random Thoughts:
This is a loved course, and by that I mean, it's one of the cleanest, well maintained courses I've ever seen. It's conveniently located in a nice park with almost no cross traffic to speak of. As for the hole layout, there's a nice variety of shots (shapes and lengths) with some in the open, some in the trees, and some of both. I also like that this course lets you get warmed up with a couple straight-forward holes before it ratchets up the difficulty. With that said, there are some very difficult holes on this course, most of which are in the trees. These holes demand precision shots and when you're not precise, you may find getting back out on the "fairway" a challenge as well. One of the bonus holes in particular I just laughed at because I couldn't see any real shot to the basket so I just let fly and hoped for the best. It didn't end well, but no biggie. I appreciate the challenge. There's also a random basket in this area that could confuse you so be on the lookout for it. (And no, I never figured out what it was for.) I finished up my round after meeting up with a nice local, and I liked that it finishes out in the open again to give you a good shot at a nice score.

Bottom Line:
This is a course that is well worth checking out. It may not be the most scenic course, but it has a good amount of challenge without being unfair. It's beautifully maintained and the locals are friendly. All in all, a good round is yours for the taking.

My new favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Awesome layout. Great variety of shots needed. There are a lot of holes that play longer than those of a typical wooded course. Numerous pin placements, 5 possibilities on some holes, allow for a wide variety of layouts. The park was very quiet and peaceful. I never even noticed that there was an airport nearby.

Cons:

This course would easily earn a 5 rating from me with two things. New tee pads that are not dangerously slick when wet and new baskets. Some of the baskets are bent or rusty. The tee pads have gravel poured into the concrete in such a way that it creates a very slick surface. Also a few of the tee pads slope down hill making it an awkward throw.

Other Thoughts:

This course is just fantastic. It was just a great walk through the woods. The course never seemed to get old, and every hole seemed well thought out. I will return to play this one again soon.

Pros:

All the signage has been updated, and it's WAY better than before. This course has a good mix of open and wooded, mainly the latter. I prefer wooded courses mainly because that's what I grew up playing on.

Cons:

Sometimes the course has some drainage issues around 12 and 13.

Other Thoughts:

I have seen some people talk about unsavory characters and open drug and alcohol use on this course. It is what it is. If you want a country club atmosphere go play golf.

My Favorite Course in Nashville 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This really is my favorite course in Nashville. It has a great design with a wide variety of terrain and challenges for both left and right handers. The community of golfers surrounding the course keep it in good condition, and there's always several golfers playing when you show up. The landscape is diverse and inviting. Pretty nice tee pads. Multiple pin locations, and updated signs were just added. Location in the city!

Cons:

Not much here, but the baskets are a bit shallow, so you might occasionally lose a putt that would stick somewhere else. Some might complain that it's too wooded, but that's part of what makes it 7 Oaks (IMO).

Other Thoughts:

A really relaxing course to play since there's not much elevation change. You can play through quickly if you desire, but it's not boring or short. Might be the smartest designed course in town.

Excellent course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great mix of technical and open shots. minimal but effective/enjoyable elevation changes. I like courses that force accurracy by having very difficult recovery shots. This course could be very maddening if you are not on your game.

Very well maintained by the local DG community. I wish Atlanta golfers respected and improved our courses in this way. There were manicured and erosion-protected "greens" arround the basket. There were de-limbed fallen trees outlining fairways. There were nice benches and gravel areas surrounding the concrete tee-box areas. plentiful trash cans. Fantastic.

Cons:

Not many. I was a little lost looking for hole #9. They had added 3 holes and there was no signage explaining this. It was a little difficult seeing the baskets...perhaps some bright pink flags on top of the baskets would help this (I've seen this at other courses - very effective).

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this round of golf and along with Cedar Hills consider this a must-play in the Nashville area. Great course to thow all the shots in your arsenal. Be prepared for a challenge!

Knock on wood 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I like wooded courses so OF COURSE I am going to love this place. The first few holes give you a complacent attitude like "This ain't so bad" then you hit the woods. Each and every hole has a 'feel' of it's own. When they say 'well kept' they aren't kidding. Bushes are trimmed and there is not a bit of trash to be found except for the trash cans.. It is inspiring to see how much pride goes into the upkeep of this course.
The cactus and limestone on little Texas is awesome. The shot over the little fence and the one over the two bridges are disc golf scenery at it's best.
Cool benches at most holes and the baskets on some of the pins were shallow. I thought that was cool. Tough for sure but fun.
You better be able to throw straight so bring your midrange game.
The (innercourse) will test your resolve and add a few new cuss words to your vocabulary. Wish I could have seen the Yin/Yang better as there were a few leaves on the ground.
So Pros: Fun Tough Beautiful

Cons:

We went early on a weekday so the crowding wasn't bad at all.
You have to have someone that knows the course though. The signs were gone for the most part but mabey they were getting ready to replace them for the tourney.
Was muddy in places but heck, as much rain as they have had here over the past two weeks, I thought it was in great shape.
Some pads were not level (sloped downward) but I am older and that's my problem.
Didn't see a bathroom and the Shell station that sells the discs just down the road didn't have one to use either.

Other Thoughts:

Some courses leave you with scattered thoughts (this hole could have been done this way/hole so and so was useless and out of place/that pin placement was dumb)
This course leaves you feeling like you have had a complete disc golf experience. It flowed so well from hole to hole and you were looking forward to the next. If you want to have a satisfying round of disc golf, then this is the place.
I rate Cedar slightly higher even though I don't have the arm for that course. That one is length tough, this one is fairway tough.
Both Cedar and Seven Oaks are two completely different courses and are must plays if you are near Nashville, Tn.

seven oaks 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

tests all aspects of your game...many different shots required to score well. even par is a very solid round out here. plays long and wide open on some holes...short and very technical on others. lots of birdies and ace runs...except for a few of the longer holes its "deuce or die" . the extra holes between 6 and 7 are called "the innercourse" it is extremely challenging and can be frustrating for those not used to very narrow fairways through dense woods. overall, this is my favorite course in the area...always presents a new challenge for me..even though I play here very often. Usually easy to find really good players to pick up a round with too. It is very well-maintained by volunteer labor...lots of pride in the course..and it shows. I'd say that Seven Oaks is the heart of the disc golf culture in Middle Tennessee.

Cons:

most of the time it's way too crowded...even during what are typically slow times for other courses. I guess its everyone else's favorite course too. I'm just as guilty as the next guy..but it seems this is the course everyone goes to..even though there are a dozen courses nearby to choose from..which are generally empty most of the time.

Also, it would help if maybe the holes were just renumbered 1-21 instead of have the "innercourse" as I, II, III because there is always a traffic jam at hole 7 where some people play the inner and others don't. Some of the baskets are of the small old-school variety and some of the teepads drop off severely. It is very well-maintained by volunteer labor...lots of pride in the course..and it shows.

Excellent technical course, very well maintained 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 11, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well maintained course just south of downtown Nashville. Course flows from open to mostly wooded holes and finishes up back in the open. Multiple pin placements on every hole with one hole having seven different placements. Many holes have benches on which to rest. The wooded holes are well preserved with defined fairways with an additional tree or two left in the fairway to add an element of luck in successfully reaching the green. Many railroad ties can be found throughout the wooded fairways to restrict the erosion as well as many gravel paths to keep from wading through mud. The underbrush in the rough is manageable to get out. Depending on skill level, your ability to get out of the rough is the difference between a par, bogey, or worse. Seven Oaks requires a technical game to have a shot at birdie. Even on the open holes, shot placement is paramount for having a good next shot.

Cons:

Not many that I can pick out. Several of the greens are topped with gravel which can eat away at your disc. Each tee sign shows multiple pin placements but no indication of which sleeve the basket is in. This factor knocked down my rating for the course by one half star. For people who like to know what type of shot to throw off the tee, this adds a lot of walking to locate the basket before you play the hole. This problem can be solved by marking the sign in a semi-permanent way to show where the basket is. Maybe use little colored rivets next to the location of the basket as they do at Cedar Hill. Many of the tees are as old as the course itself and have rusted through the years making reading the distances off them difficult. Course is very popular and can get crowded. It may not seem like a problem for a group of people but singles will get held up a lot of the time waiting.

Other Thoughts:

Personally this ranks up there with Cedar Hill as one of the best courses in the Nashville area. If you're not a local playing this course, say thanks to someone who's there all the time. Seven Oaks is a non-parks managed course, meaning that its the disc golf community (not the city) that got the course looking the way it does with all their hard work and volunteer hours. Access to the hidden holes can be done after number 6 by going a little bit farther back left of number 7 tee pad. There's a path leading there but you have to be on the look out for it. These holes are more technical and unforgiving then the rest of the wooded holes. After completing these three holes (I, II, III) you'll be right back at seven's tee pad.

Hometown Favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course offers the full spectrum of hole layouts, with the exception of any water holes and I'm fine with that. The course is maintained by a excellent crew who give up one weekend every year to a work/party focusing on a couple of holes to manicure, as well as a regular early Sunday morning clean-up. Hence the mentioned mulch, gravel and rail-tyes throughout the course.

The flow of the course is quite smooth with "Next Tee" signs on all the baskets and cleared paths leading to and from each hole. The average hole length is around 300-340' and most all holes work for backhand and forehand throwers. The baskets are moved on a regular basis, but are always marked if you take the time to look at the signs.

Cons:

The course crowding sometimes makes you think it is the only course around Nashville. The signs are a bit old and some holes distance are hard to make out.

Other Thoughts:

The inner-course holes are played in the weekly doubles and handicap tournaments, so if interested to take part in these events practice them. These holes can help relieve some of the slow play after holes 6 when you can take the split.

Very quaint DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course was pretty amazing. I wasn't sure what to expect other than its reputation, "it can be pretty crowded and it is a good course". Well I'll have to say that I was pleasantly surprised, I really liked this course a lot. After I played a few holes I discovered that this course has a real nostalgia to it. It almost felt as if it had some ancestral importance, like going to an old historic house or something. I really enjoyed the ambiance.

The course itself has most certainly been around for a while and has been broken in quite well. The first few holes play fairly open and the forth seems to tip toe into the woods beautify. That's where you begin to see some of the nicest wooded holes around. It has some very scenic fairways as you meander through the woods and you'll get a great shot variety. There is also a pretty good fluctuation in lengths as well. They vary from the low 200' to mid 400' foot range. The shorter holes sometimes require a little more accuracy than the longer holes but all in all almost every hole presents some sort of challenge and should be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. There are also multiple pin positions to keep things mixed up. If moved often enough they should keep even the locals on there toes and help keep the course diversified enough to battle becoming bored with the same old layout. It should also be noted that there are also three additional holes that supplement the main eighteen on the course as well. (I did not play them). The course makes pretty good sense and following the layout is fairly easy. In the end I liked the way that number eighteen punches out of the woods and brings you to the pin near a creek bank and trail that conveniently brings you right back up to the parking lot.

You should also enjoy the bonus of concrete tee pads, signs with distances and pin position indications, and benches. Speaking of benches, there is some really unique custom built seats scattered around and they sort of add to the "vibe" of the course. Additionally, it's absolutely amazing to see the amount of work that has been contributed to this course. You have to see it for yourself. People have dragged in cross ties, iron fences, split rail fences, gravel, mulch, etc. Overall it has really given this course a personality of its own.

This course is in its own area without any other park interferences. It has its own parking lot with a port-a-john and a nice kiosk with plenty of disc golf info.

Cons:

Being an older course you can expect a couple of cons. First of all the pins are pretty old. I couldn't help notice that the baskets themselves are really shallow compared to some of the modern baskets. Also the concrete pads are pretty worn but they are quite manageable. The signs are in pretty bad shape. Some of them are almost unreadable and seemed to be inaccurate as far as distances are concerned. Some of the pin position indicators were also in the wrong place.

Fortunately I played here on an early weekday and only saw a few other players. I understand that during peak times this course is over crowded. I have talked to a couple of people who have said that the crowds can be frustrating enough to detour them from playing this course at these times. If you are planning on playing here you may want to plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts:

At times the phrase "must play" can be overused. This is certainly not the case here. If you are in the Nashville area, you should come and see for yourself. I really don't believe anyone would be disappointed after playing this course. It really is a one of a kind. Enjoy!

Great Course - the hard work shows! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was in town for the Dave Matthews concert this weekend, and made time to play another Nashville course. My only previous experience with Nashville DG was Two Rivers Park, so this was a nice change from that course. The course is pretty much set off in its own area of the park -- I did not see any casual park users (walkers, joggers, etc) wandering through the course, and you do not have to throw over any walking paths or playgrounds. It offers a mix of open and wooded holes, but the wooded holes all have visible routes present. They may be tight or a challenge to a RHBH thrower, but they are there. All holes had concrete tee pads that were in good shape, and multiple pin positions. The tee signs were informative about distance and showed which location the pin was supposed to be in, as well as how to get to the next tee from the basket. Terrain was wisely used -- you didn't play up a hill just because a hill was there -- you played up a hill because it made a good hole. Benches and trash cans were at every tee pad (or so it seemed), and I saw very little litter on the course. A sign on one tree said that they had a work period every Sunday morning (followed by a tourney), and the efforts of those show on the course. Info board at course start had lots of good stuff posted about tourneys, etc.

Cons:

Not too many. On some of the signs, the letters and numbers used to indicate the various pin placements have come off, and on a couple of the holes, the pin was not in the location indicated on the sign. Also, there were a couple of holes that played close to one another (there is a tee-pad on the right edge of 18's fairway, and Hole 14's fairway runs right behind 13's basket). Also, we almost missed Hole 15 -- we had forgotten which way to go from 14's basket once we holed out, so we came out of the woods and headed to the visible tee-pad -- the group in front of us told us it was #16, and told us how to find # 15.

Other Thoughts:

All of the players we encountered on the course were very friendly -- we actually met several other from out of town who were playing the course for the 1st time, and everyone was very complimentary of it. Players ranged from teenagers to some "more experienced" players (looked to be mid-to-late 40's), so the course obviously appeals to a broad range of DG'ers. The course did not seem to have taken much damage from the recent windstorms that went through the Nashville and Murfreesboro area -- one tree was down at 3's teepad, but it was already being dismantled and did not obstruct play. I've only played 2 Nashville courses so far, but if you are coming through the area, I would definitely make it a point to play this one.

Like playing in the woods? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

With a good mix of uphill, downhill, doglegs left and right, short and long, this course will challenge and improve your game.

Many of the holes are protected by unforgiving woods, forcing you to play smart, instead of grip it and rip it. Finesse, not power.

I also love, but have only played once, holes "19, 20, and 21", which are, appropriately enough, located in the middle of what I call "Murderer's Row" (see below). They are three extremely narrow pro-level holes just off to the left of the number 6 basket. I would recommend working on your game before trying these holes!

Lots of benches and trash cans. While the woods can slap down that perfect drive, they also can provide needed shade during the summer.

Cons:

Murderer's Row. Holes 5, 6, and 7:

There is no safe way to play hole 5. You have to get lucky, basically, to get it over the hill with a decent angle of the basket to par or better. I don't claim to be good, but I have yet to solve that one.

Hole 6 is a downhill, and either slightly left or slightly right of the tee. Its current back location is killer. Safe to say trees will be a factor for you on this hole as well.

I actually seem to be getting worse at hole 7, despite it being a fairly straightforward uphill dogleg right. These three holes kill my score. Every time.

Those woods that slap down that perfect drive! There are a couple of trees I've grown to hate on this course.

Discs aren't always the only things getting high!
On busy days, it's not uncommon to notice a particularly "mellow" smell, usually in the more secluded holes. It doesn't bother me too much, but I don't think that's appropriate with children often around.

As other reviewers have pointed out, the course can be really crowded at times. Groups of five or more are not uncommon.

Other Thoughts:

Currently, some of the holes, like 13 and 18, seem to be in really easy spots. Some of them, like 6, 10, are in really difficult spots. Depends on the season, I guess.

In short, I've grown to appreciate the challenge and variety this course offers. Most of the locals are friendly and love to give advice.

Good but crowded 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great hole variety, really works your entire shot spectrum, from backhands to sidearms. Almost no holes are flat, but the hills are gentle. Tee pads are in good shape with signs for hole layout, pin placements, and (usually) direction to next tee.

Cons:

Course was overly crowded, it seems to be an extremely high traffic course. Had to wait on every tee, there were a lot of large groups (5+ people) slowing things down, and the people did not seem inclined to let me (playing solo) play through. Some of the signs were faded and hard to read, could do with replacing.

Other Thoughts:

Make sure you follow the directions listed here on DGCR because there are two entrances to the park. If you find the park through Google and get GMaps directions it takes you to the entrance on MacGavock, from which you would have a long walk to the start of the course (with no signs to guide the way either).

Lots Of Hard Work & Engineering Have Gone Into Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

I can't believe the amount of hard work and sweat that has gone into the building and improvements on this course. I have to assume that the disc club has worked countless hours hauling in railroad ties, gravel, bark and other building materials. The result is impressive. I guess much of this has been done dealing with water run-off. My hats are off to the local disc club! The course itself is well marked with 2, 3 or even 4 basket positions on each hole. These A,B,C or D positions are clearly represented by screws with washers on the teepad posts. This was the first course that I had seen this on and I later was to see it used on other Tennessee courses, "Cedar Hill" in Nashville and "The Sinks" in Chattanooga. What a great simple way to show which position the basket is in. Saved me a lot time walking down the fairway and back. The course is mostly wooded and technical. A few holes are in the open park area. It was fairly easy to follow, just a little confusing at times. I think the airport noise added to ambiance of the place. There were many benches to rest on and the course played mostly in the shade. The rough is very forgiving and overall, I think the course is challenging but fair.

Cons:

I couldn't find the added three holes, 19-21. # 14 was missing a sign. I guess there's no water to throw over.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed played 7 Cedars early one beautiful, Tennesse morning, peaceful, just me and the noise of the jet engines. This course will challenge, it will frustrate and it will entertain you. And if you see a club member, thank them for me for all their hard work. They've really created something special here.

Cons:

A few of the holes don't really have fairways, #5 comes to mind. You pretty much throw it and hope you get lucky. You can make a bad throw and get a good kick. You can make a good throw and get a bad kick.

Other Thoughts:

This course is always in great shape and has lots of challenging holes. The one good thing about the heavily wooded holes that don't have much fairway is that you do have a chance to recover. The woods are mature enoug there isn't a ton of undergrowth that would make you have to pitch out. This is a must play if you are in the nashville area and like wooded courses.
