Favorite in Middle TN 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 31, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a outstanding layout compared to Barfield Crescent down the road. Very good mixture of wooded holes and open holes. Some holes have beautiful scenery that makes you just sit back and enjoy sometimes. The wooded holes are tricky but not impossible. Seems like they take very good care of the course as far as cutting away tree limbs, maintenance of holes and tees, etc. Will be challenging for the beginner and even the pro's. Benches at every other hole and also trash cans.

Cons:

Not many cons except kids usually blare their music when coming into the parking area so its hard to tune it out on hole #1 and #12 but those are very small problems. Bugs are heavy during spring and summer so spray some OFF on you.

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course in TN so far and its 10 minutes from my house. I love to come here just about every other day and let 'er rip! I would recommend this course to anyone if your in the area or even a out of towner. You wont be disappointed at all!

A Must. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of variety. NIce blend of long distance drives and short tight woodsy shots.
Beautiful clean course that is fun with challenges. Excellent water shots with alternates for scaredy cats. The pads and signs are pretty good and there are some benches and trash cans.

Cons:

Being the only place to play in Smyrna this place is usually packed on a good nice day, so be prepared for patience. You also have your typical Tennessee course issues like nature and weather. It gets very hot and sticky here in the Summer and the ticks, mosquitoes and other critters are definitely a factor. Fall and late winter are perfect though.

Other Thoughts:

My first ace was on number 9 over the swamp thing, which was my favorite hole that I would tell people about all the time. Lord of the Rings looking shot. It congratulated me for complimenting and promoting it with so much high praise I think.
I live very close to Cedar Hill and frequent all of the great courses in the area and this one sticks out as my favorite. I love Seven Oaks but there are too many woods and you don't get to pull out the drivers enough for my liking. I call this place Seven Oaks on steroids.

List of my favorite MIddle TN. courses:
1. Sharp Springs has everything all of our courses offer in one course.
2. Cedar Hill-.
3. Crockett Park-
4. Seven Oaks-
5. Barfield-

Tennessee Swamp 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I love the practice range. The first hole is extremely fun. The park is massive, but the course is in the back away from everything. Good Variety.

Cons:

I'm from Florida and grew up playing baseball. Night after night I would go home with at least 20 mosquito bites (even when caked in repellent). This course was a mosquito pit (thus my subpar review). I can stand one or two mosquito bites, but after I killed one that had just landed on me and got blood all over my leg, I was out. This course is only five minutes away from me, but I refuse to play it until it cools off. Also, I refuse to play over the water on this course. I found an alternate for 9, but not the first water hole.

Other Thoughts:

I ran into some nice folks, but I went out to use the practice range one day, and a couple pulled up and sat in their car, making out. It was a little awkward.

Another TN gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 23, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of challenge and variety. Good concrete tee pads. Signs showing hole layout and multiple basket positions. There are heavily wooded holes, and holes with wide open fairways so you can really air it out. Most of the open hole have basket placements that are in wooded areas to add to the challenge. There are a few ace possibilities, but for the most part you need to earn everything you get. Course is located in a huge park. Lots of running, walking and biking opportunities. Course is separated from the rest of the park activities.

Cons:

Shule can be thick and nasty in spots. Signs are old and could use an upgrade. Baskets are also older and could use some colors to help them stand out.

Other Thoughts:

There are some really good holes on this course. 4 stands out to me as it is about a 200' shot over a large pond. The wind caught my Roc today and caused a nice splash down. Damn! I'm sure some pond-rat will enjoy the lightly beaten KC Pro donation. Hole 10 tees off from a hill, goes through the trees, over a small pond and into some large rocks at about 220'. Just a sweet ace run with some risk added in if you nail a tree or miss your line. There is also some risk if you hit the rocks and roll towards the water.

Overall this is just a real strong, varied course. Lots of woods, lefts and rights. Typical of the very good courses in the Nashville area. If you live in the South and rate the Charlotte area as the best there is, then don't sleep on Nashville courses. This course is typical of the quality you can expect.

March 2012 Update - Played this course again finally. Some very nice work has been done. Some drainage and erosion issues have been fixed with a very nice landscaping job on the #1 hole. They still have huge concrete pads, but it looks like some improved signs have been added. Everything is very clean and well kept. Still some nasty rough that can eat discs, but this course is tough and fair all the way around. Great mix of tight, fun wooded holes and longer open holes. But even the open holes play around heavily wooded areas so you are forced to hit lines and make shots.

The pond shot is actually about 275' or so to the pin. You need to clear about 200' of water and make it through a few trees to get to the basket. A really fun shot.

A few of the holes seem like they've added some longer, tougher alternate basket positions. Nice change if you want to see what you're really made of. I'd highly recommend this course to anyone lucky enough to be in the Nashville area.

Fun mix of holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Right off the bat, you step into the woods for some good golf. The course is pretty secluded from most other activities in the park, save from a running/walking trail near several of the open holes. Each hole has multiple pin placements but as I've only played here once, I don't know how often they get changed up. Nice new tee signs are included at every hole with each indicating which sleeve the basket is in. The holes have an ever changing variety from one to the next. Tee pads are good sized but can become slick during/after any rain. The wooded holes provide a good challenge of hitting your lines to have a chance at birdie. The wooded rough wasn't so overwhelming that it would cost you two/three strokes but you definitely don't want to go in there! The open holes typically have more length than the woods. The open holes on the front nine played around a cornfield, so that added a nice change to the "rough" instead of just trees. In multiple places there's several additions that made this course even more enjoyable to play. Paths from green to the next tee pad, wood barriers to prevent erosion around the course, and staircases to keep from traversing slick/muddy paths were all available on Sharp Springs.

Cons:

The course is laid out in a mostly flat part of the park with only a couple holes that I noticed went up or down in elevation. Really the open holes didn't do much for me. Most all were wide open with 80' wide fairways lined with woods on one side, a cornfield on the other and no obstacles between the tee pad and basket. It would be wise to bring bug spray and to use it liberally here as the bugs can be fierce especially after a rainstorm.

Other Thoughts:

Sharp Springs is really a fun course to get out to play and definitely would play tougher in tournaments. Course has a good variety of short, long, left, right, and straight shots that can be beneficial to master for less skilled players.

Very well maintained, friendly folks, a solid course that will challenge amateurs and pros alike. I have played almost all of the courses in middle Tennessee, and this one is the most balanced and fun to play of all of them.

Cons:

Mosquitoes can be almost unbearable sometimes, gets very crowded around 5 o'clock on most days.

Other Thoughts:

A deceivingly difficult course that has really helped out my game tremendously since I play on it the most. The only other course I have played in middle Tennessee that I personally found to be more difficult was Cedar Hill. But, the overall difficulty does nothing to take away from the great balance this course has.

Pros:

LOTS of variety out here. Shots into the woods/ shots out of the woods/2 water hazards/corn hazards. Nice benches and concrete tee pads at every hole. Beautiful course.

Cons:

The only con I can think of are the small crappy tee signs but they gave us a good idea of where the next basket was so no big deal. Also, I would have liked a tee sign at 3a.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a lot of fun and well worth the drive. We played through twice before noon and only saw 2 other people the whole morning. Also, I have seen people in the reviews having trouble finding 3a (the water hazard). If you take an immediate right after basket 2 you will see a trail that crosses the road. The tee for 3a is right next to the water to the left of the park signage. Also, the mosquitos were not near as big a problem as I thought they would be by reading the other reviews. Just grab some bug spray and it's a non-issue.

Cons:

My score was lousy, but it wasn't your fault! I expect to do much better next time through when I have an idea what is going on. Minor navigation issues as expected from the other reviews so no stress there.

Other Thoughts:

Based on the prior reviews I chose this course while traveling by and was impressed. The variety of shots needed was challenging and enjoyable at my average skill level. I will go out of my way to play this course again.

Pros:

This is one of the better designed courses in the area. Lots of variety from open to wooded holes, dogleg lefts and rights, mandos, water, and multiple baskets on several holes. I'm pretty sure I used every disc in my bag and every shot I know.

The course is maintained very well, and while I was playing there were several holes that were in the process of being mulched again.

There is an alternate tee for 3 that plays over a lake/pond. I've never seen it, but it looks like a fun throw. 9 also has a small pond you throw over, but the hole is only 207 ft. It's an easy shot, but for some reason I still get nervous, although this last time I was out there it was dry.

I felt like this course really tested me. I really enjoy the challenges this course offers. I'm enjoying myself just sitting here daydreaming about all the different shots.

I would say it's fairly beginner friendly, but some shots are pretty tight. I don't think it's a crowded course either. It was a beautiful Saturday, and the course seemed to be flowing well, although there are hardly any parking spots next to the first tee. You may have drive up to a pavilion to park.

Cons:

The biggest con, and the worst one I have encountered yet, are the mosquitoes. Although they are not out yet this year, they are horrible come summer/fall. The first time I played this course was last summer. I managed to throw my drive on the first hole before I left to get some bug spray. I'm telling you, it's like I was a walking blood bank giving out free samples. After I lathered up, I was still getting eat up.

Because the mosquitoes are so bad, I didn't return to the course until December when I new it would be mosquito free.If it wasn't for the mosquitoes, this could be my favorite course in the area. Unfortunately, I will only play this course between December-April. I may go there if some friends really want to play, but I will never go on my own.

There were maybe 2 holes that didn't seem to have a clear fairway, and there are a few places where a next tee sign would be helpful.

Really are not too many cons to this course for me, just a major bug problem. They have a tournament called the Skeeter Heater during the summer. I think the local club uses the "tournament" to sacrifice unsuspecting competitors to the mosquito god.

Other Thoughts:

Like I said, I really like this course. I just hate the bugs!

As of today here are my favorite Nashville area courses:

1. Cedar Hill Park
2. Crockett Park
3. Liberty Park
4. Sharp Springs Park
5. Barfield Crescent Park
6. Seven Oaks Park
7. Two Rivers

I haven't played Sanders Ferry, Cedars of Lebanon, or Triple Creek.

Fun Challenging Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course will test every shot in your bag due to the amount of trees on the course as well as the ample use of elevation change and doglegs that require particular accuracy.

The course lets you feel miles away from anything else.

The course is well maintained with a generous amount of wooden stairs and crushed gravel paths.

There were bathrooms available at the entry of the park.

Only 5 miles from I-24 so great for passers-through.

Cons:

Several trees should be removed on several holes to make the holes a better test of skill. Holes 1 long, 16 right, and 17 long come to mind. That said I have only played this course once and not with a local so perhaps I just need to learn the routes...

Several holes were WIDE open (and sometimes with no elevation change) and very boring. Holes 4, 6, and 15 come to mind although I understand that in season the corn helps this a bit.

Can be somewhat difficult to find your way a couple of times (I had an especially difficult time finding hole 4 (after playing hole 3a and never finding the teepad for 3 even though I found the basket).

Razor wire along fence on right on hole 6 was a bit discouraging. It would be nice to have a system in place to recover lost discs from whatever that place was or a number on the tee you can call.

Other Thoughts:

I think a sign at the beginning of the course to explain how the alternate holes are to be used if you don't want to play the original water holes would be helpful. I wasn't sure if they were alternates that were set up some of the time instead of the originals or what so it left me confused on which way to go.

I especially liked holes 9 and 13.

Hole 9 had a huge nasty swamp you had to throw across but the hole was 175ish feet and straight. The swamp adds a nice element of gut check and I hate that it sounds like it isn't there all the time.

Hole 13 requires a shot that I don't think I have ever had to throw before on a course from a tee or fairway! (see course pics!) I had to laugh when I saw the basket through the hole cut through the woods on the right. I remembered to look through the hole at the basket at the last second before my shot landed and got to see it sail right in front of the basket! What a great feeling...

Other well designed holes include 7, 12, and 14.

Overall the fun factor was high on this course. It pushed my skills at the same time and I can't wait to play it again (hopefully with some locals).

Technical and challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful and well maintained course. About half wooded and half wide open holes allow for variety. Not busy during the week. Concrete tees and hole maps every hole. It's a very peaceful place to play.

Cons:

Some holes require practically threading a needle to drive, so luck can come into play. Next hole indicators are present near the pins, but sometimes difficult to find. There are a few places to lose a disc if you're not careful, including a private highly secured fence on the right on hole 6 or 7 that definitely does not allow trespassers. There's plenty of room to the left to play it safe though.

Other Thoughts:

Watch out for hole 9, it's a big pond between you and the pin, surrounded by trees. There is an alternate hole 9 without water, for the less experienced and less adventurous players like myself. I played in the fall, so while I didn't have the corn rows to contend with, leaves covered the ground in the woods making it a little difficult to find a disc. I found myself wanting to mulligan about every hole just because it was so fun. Depending how many discs you have, you may need to use all or most of them because a variety of shots are required. I've been playing for 3 months and I shot a 62.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Starting from hole one, you just get the feeling you are going to enjoy playing this course. Hole one is a moderately long 324 ft hole through a mildly narrow fairway in the woods. It has a gentle left to right turn. Though a good hole, I wasn't enamored with the hole 9 signature hole. It is a 200 ft straight and narrow shot through beautiful woods opening over a murky watery pit and finishing with the hole at the top of ledge. There is no room for error. If you make a mistake, you are not going to regret it a little, you are going to regret it a lot. On the other hand, I loved the other signature hole, number 3. Hole 5 is one of many holes that is a good test of accuracy and shot control through woods. Many of the holes are fairly open. It is good course with some challenging holes.

Cons:

I had a very hard time finding some holes. I should have brought a map. The holes need better marking to indicate where the next one is. I almost got lost looking for hole six after finishing hole 5. I was lucky and was able to team up with a local player to play the rest of the round.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course that I wouldn't mind playing again. While the course has many skill shots, it doesn't require a great variety of shots. You are not going to need to use a wide selection of the disks in your bag.

Solid course and good challange.I wish there was a 3.75 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a very challenging and somewhat technical course with lots to offer. I consider it to be a very good representation of what a solid disc golf course should be. Beginners and advanced players should both expect to be entertained and your skills will defiantly be tested at some point during the round. Some would agree that it has multiple signature holes. You will also find that this course is very well maintained, clean, and safe.

First off there is a pretty incredible variety of hole types and shots needed. Although there are not many major elevation changes you probably won't notice. After all, the doglegs, open shots, tight shots, length variety, and the precision that's needed will keep your mind occupied. Throughout the course you can't get away with half hearted shots either. There are pretty good hazards scattered around too. They included but not limited to a lake, corn fields that eat discs(not an issue in winter), roads and paths, and fences that keep you out of private property running along the fairway. There's even a seasonal retention pond with some nasty water to throw across on number nine. Speaking of nine, it has a really nice layout with the basket mounted up on a boulder that is pretty unique and really fun. It's my favorite hole on the course. Number fifteen's open, gradual 275' +/- downhill was also quite fun and screams ace run all the way! To sum it up, this course has a good lay out, has good variety, it's really fun, and it's an affectionately tough course.

The amenities are average. Concrete tee pads are always a plus. Benches are scattered around but make for a nice addition. The new steps at hole one are really nice too. Tee signs are sufficient for the cause but could be improved by installing ones that are professionally made. There are some gravel paths leading the way between some of the holes that lend a hand as far as navigation is concerned. The baskets are also in pretty good shape relatively speaking. Some have flags or have been painted to help you spot them in the woods. I liked the practice basket in the field near the parking lot. It is big enough to practice some decent drives and obviously throw a few putts too. The parking is quite convenient and in an area where I don't think you'll be broken into very easily. It would appear there is a really strong group of locals that take pride and more importantly care of this course. Kudos to them! It's very evident. I thoroughly enjoy this course.

Cons:

I must admit that I have not played during mosquito season but I think we can all agree that they are very frustrating. It sounds like they are particularly bad here in the summer. Bring the spray for sure!

It can be a little confusing to navigate in a place or two your first time out. Bring a map and you are good to go. After you play through once you'll have no problems.

It can be little marshy on the six/seven fairway area. There is also private/government property (water authority) blocked by a fence on the right side in this area. An errant shot could leave you you contenplating whether it's worth going after. We all want our discs back but it didn't seem like a place you would want to be caught trespassing. Just be careful if you try to retrieve your disc.

Other Thoughts:

The park itself is nice as well. There are a few other activities you can take advantage of while you are there. Most notably were the paved bike paths, ball fields, and the pavilions. Fishing is an option too I guess if you are into that.

If you are in the Nashville area, try to play this course. Nashville has some great courses and this may be one that is easily overlooked. Even a decent drive won't leave you disappointed. Enjoy!

Dissapointing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has all the essentials of a good course. All of the baskets are nice, and all the holes have concrete pads. There was also an alternate tee for the water hole. There were maps on every hole displaying the distance to each basket. There were a fair number of benches throughout the park, and the fairways were trimmed nicely. The holes were nicely designed and showed a great variety, varying between forest and open holes. There was even one hole over 600 ft! The elevation made for a nice challenge on most holes. It wasn't very crowded, and the locals were very nice, even returning a lost disc to us. The course is fairly challenging throughout.

Cons:

During the summer, there are swarms of mosquitoes everywhere. They become a pain quite early on, so you definitely need to bring bug spray along with you. Although the maps were nice to show where every basket was, very often we found that most of the alternate baskets were pulled up, and we had to backtrack to find the correct basket. The flow of the course was horrible, and we sometimes had to spend minutes finding the next hole. There is no par written for any hole, so be prepared to make them up as you go. Much of the area off the fairway is entangled in thorns and a lot of shrubbery, so some discs that go in may not come back out, as we found out today. On one of the holes, if you throw 2 behind the basket, you will hit water. If it were to have rained recently, it is very likely that basket could have been underwater and unplayable.

Other Thoughts:

We traveled an hour to play this course, and although it was nice, the bugs, lack of par scores, and frustration of the layout of the course will probably prevent us from going back. It was a good game of golf, but not worth the drive. If you live close, it is a fair course, but if you are far away, don't bother.
