Teeny town, tiny course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

With a total land area of about one-quarter-square mile, the tiny town of Sharpsville, Ind., found just enough room for a disc golf course.

The course is fairly friendly for beginners, though a couple obstacles place a higher premium on accuracy than might be expected for a course this short. Only the last hole is longer than 210 feet.

The first thing you might notice when you pull into the parking lot is a large sign advertising Sharpsville Disc Golf. There's a small chalkboard attached to the sign, and users who have made an ace can add their name, plus the date and hole number of their accomplishment. Cool feature!

Navigation is quite easy. The first teepad is next to the parking lot, and after that, every teepad is close to the previous basket. The area is marked by a wooded post with the hole number and distance. No concrete teepads exist, unfortunately, but the area around it is grassy.

Hole #2 might be the signature hole; a patch of trees about halfway to the basket forms a tight tunnel that's necessary to hit if you want to make a birdie.

The basket for Hole #4 and the fairway for Hole #5 aren't far from Broad Creek, though there are some trees and brush that serve as a barrier to hopefully keep your disc dry.

The course is mostly flat and all on grass, which appeared to be well-mowed and maintained during my visit.

Like a few other small-town park courses that I encountered while driving through Indiana, most disc golfers will be able to bag the Sharpsville Park course quickly while using a couple discs.

Cons:

The course is definitely shoehorned into the area allotted; this explains all the sub-200-foot holes, which is the only way the designers squeezed in nine holes.

There are a few strange obstacles out at Sharpsville Park. On Hole #2, there's a concrete barrier that might be 10 feet on each side and you won't want to toss your disc into it, though the trees make that line difficult to achieve. On Hole #3, you'll have to throw around a small shed with a chain-link fence in front of it. The right side of the fairway for Hole #4 has a three-foot-high wire fence with a sign encouraging park goers to use the gate and not climb the fence. It's just a grassy field on the other side, but it's an annoying obstacle, plus the basket is placed under a large tree with a low ceiling.

The final hole is 241 feet in length but two large evergreens about 75 feet down the fairway block out the straight-ahead route to the basket. Time to pull our your sky hyzer, tomahawk or roller shot.

Other Thoughts:

I'm giving the Sharpsville Park DGC a 1.0 rating, though it's probably closer to "passable" than "poor." The combination of natural teepads, really short holes, weird obstacles and insufficient space leads to a one-dimensional design, but it's a fun course for novice disc golfers seeking a casual round.
