Full tank, empty bladder

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 15, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

The greatest strength of this course is its near-infinite flexibility. At 7,000' and par 37, Sheetz Gold must be one of the most challenging 9-hole, 1-basket courses on this or any other planet. Sadly, we missed the 2:00 to 3:00 AM tee time for this layout.

Instead, I played an unlisted short course, cashing in my 20-foot ace for a rare perfect round of disc golf. Take that, McBeth! How many courses can challenge top pros (granted, only in the wee hours of the morning) while remaining completely suitable for toddlers?

Amenities at this course are unparalleled. I cannot think of another comparable course where you can gas up the car, grab drinks and snacks, use the rest room, play a round, and be back on the road in less than 10 minutes. Truly a marvel of efficiency.

This course is close to transportation. Very close. In fact, errant drives may need to be retrieved quickly between traffic light changes. That said, risk of disc loss is very low if you land in the fairway or the adjacent gas station parking lot.

To enhance challenge, designers have carefully placed litter, construction debris, empty booze bottles, and car maintenance product containers at key points in the fairway. Choose your landing zones carefully!

The course is cart friendly despite a curb near the first tee and at least two small rocks in the fairway. Cheerful music played throughout the round.

Cons:

There are ample concrete and asphalt surfaces for most tees, but the shorter tee pads are natural. Perhaps paving the small grassy area around the basket would ensure better footing for drives?

Tee signs were nonexistent, which is understandable given the near-infinite flexibility of teeing positions.

Grass was a bit long when I played, but it must be difficult to coordinate mowing schedules between pro tournaments, local leagues, casual play, and fuel truck deliveries.

Also, it was raining. Perhaps I am being petty, but a highly-renowned course such as this should have better control over the weather.

Other Thoughts:

My expectations for this course were high, but despite the full tank of gas I left feeling somewhat . . . empty. Perhaps it was just my bladder.

An objective review of North Carolina's highest rated course on UDisc.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sheetz Gold is North Carolina's highest rated course according to UDisc. Yet, it's somehow still underrated.
- We always talk about rating inflation on UDisc. Is this course worthy of its 4.9 rating with 100+ reviews? Why, yes. Yes it is.
- What you have here is a single basket. Unlike other elite courses that take 18 (or more) baskets to achieve greatness, Sheetz only needs one.
- The golden shine from the basket and the angelic glow weren't present when I played. But I could still sense them during my throws.
- There is a full service gas station here. How many other courses can make that claim? The answer: Not many!
- You can fill up your vehicle and play this layout once, twice, three, or four times. You only need to play one round to experience this course. Every time after that is just a bonus.
- The entire plot of land is approx. 40x150. You don't need to trek high and low to play elite courses. You can achieve that with a long jump putt!
- Wind down after your round with a Puckermelon Shake or a Red Bull Smoothie. Good luck finding that at Flip City or Idlewild.

Cons:

I don't want to appear biased so I'll point out things I found wrong.
- The grass was tall when I played. The lawn wasn't perfectly manicured. It wasn't perfection. Not rain on your wedding day bad, more like a slight breeze.
- For those who play disc golf for exercise, you're not going to burn as many calories as you would at an 8,000 foot layout.
- Some people will feel uncomfortable being so overcome with emotion in such a public setting. So, if you think tears of joy in a field next to a gas station is a bad thing, you may want to avoid this place.
- If you haven't played hundreds of courses, or at least dozens, don't play here. Once you visit Sheetz Gold, all other courses will seem empty.
- The melodic tones of a piano weren't playing the day I was there. Or, if they were, they were drowned out by the 4 lane road. I was expected The Masters-esque piano music playing the whole time. Sadly, that wasn't to be.
