Pros:
The provided scorecard has some information on the back that spells it out: Six Par 3's, Six Par 4's, Six Par 5's. Six Straight, Six Right, Six Left.
So whoever laid this course out succeeded with respect to variety. While it is largely a wooded course, hole lengths vary from 152' out to 632', with an average of 350' per hole. You're presented with a few "birdie or else" putter shots as well a some long, winding two and three-drive holes. Every variety of line from tight and straight to bending and doglegged is accounted for here as well.
The course plays through beautiful, mature Maine forest with towering trees and relatively little brush.
The shortest hole on the course features a basket on a raised mound, but that's it for elevation.
Mach II baskets catch fine but can be hard to spot in the shadows. Big red tee signs give hole number, distance and par, but nothing else. Tee pads are large raised wooden platforms with very good friction paint on them. Ample trash cans and benches.
There is a 9-hole putting course next to the parking lot that is a great warmup. It is truly a putter course with hole lengths from 20' - 50'.
Cons:
There isn't much elevation out here, nor are there any creeks or ponds in play. Lacking those additional design elements places Skyriders DG just a step behind the top courses in the area.
The raised wooden tee pads work great, but are several inches up above the surrounding ground. So if you plan to run up from the back or follow through off the front you'll find them challenging.
Tee signs lack any hole diagram, and on some of the long holes you'll find yourself either walking way up or throwing blind.
Other Thoughts:
The original course owner has passed away, and his wife is still on the property and will likely say hello. The course is now being maintained by some family members who turn out to be the same crew that runs the DR courses in Bangor.
