Only Good With Beer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Seeing a respected fellow reviewer post this course, I felt like it would be fun to deliver the first two reviews in one day!

+ A buddy and I visited Slyfox as a "reward" at the end of a day of bagging (Windlestrae- Henning, Kerr, French Creek, Sankanac). So what could be better than playing a fun 9 with plenty of beers?

+ #1 is a fun opening hole throwing through a hole in the treeline. #8 basket is on the edge of the "pit", and #9 is a nice finishing hole with a right-hooking short dogleg

Cons:

- Everything here is meant to be casual, so I'm not going to complain about the lack of teepads, the single chain baskets (on beer kegs, people...beer kegs!). But the navigation is really, really confusing. Even with a picture of the layout snapped on our phones. The wandering around to figure our #4 - #8 really sapped the good time

Other Thoughts:

~ I love the idea of integrating disc golf as an activity at a brewery - I just wish this was better. I'm scoring it low because it doesn't really do right by any one audience: It's too hard for beginners, too confusing for the experienced. Yes, it's fun because of the novelty. But I honestly think a better layout would be to create a mini 9 or 18 using the field and some of the surrounding features - without going into the "pit" or deep into the woods. There are some mini courses around Lancaster that are great fun. I realize it's not "disc golf" - but it's a lot of fun. And fun was in pretty short supply during our round at Slyfox, once we got past the novelty

Some Food Some Beer and an Intro to DG 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 28, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you ever wanted a spot where you can introduce the game to adult friends and maybe their SO's in tow, without dealing with a typical park environment, this may be it. It's not a course to play serious disc golf on but it's fair enough to show decidedly non-DGers the game, while simultaneously having a beer with food nearby.

It's convenient when you can't drag them to a park or want to avoid being rushed by impatient player groups. In theory, it fits a needed niche. The single chain, lightweight baskets sit on beer kegs and this is a putter or midrange only round. It's smaller than nearly every community course I've been to.

#3 is throwing a floater down into a surprisingly sizable pit, undoubtedly the signature hole. #6 is a nice risk shot over the pit. No disc loss, just a walk down for retrieval.

Cons:

Unfortunately, aside from the open grass portions, I feel it missed the mark for its purpose. It feels largely unloved since it was established three years ago and desperately needs finishing touches.

The official map sometimes doesn't correspond well to the actual terrain for #3, 4 and 8. The proposed tee off spots are beyond ambiguous irl and too hard for casual play. Fairways also crisscross each other. That sort of thing. Someone who actually plays the game needs to take an afternoon to make simple tee planks with a number and arrow to basket.

The "Pit" makes for a neat floater throw down to the basket from various approaches but it's also gonna have overgrown parts in the summer and be wet after rain.

Other Thoughts:

Since the current official layout is too vague and unrealistic for several holes, here is a simplified unofficial layout for fun. Note numbers are slightly changed after #2. It's more in keeping with absolute casual play for total beginners: to avoid walking up and down the pit twice, avoid losing discs in the unkempt part of the pit, eliminate fairway criss-crosses, and to clarify mysterious tee off spots. If you liked old #6 over the pit, simply tee-off for both lower and upper baskets simultaneously, it'll save effort.

After #2, simply go past the basket on and walk the trail left until past the pit. There you will see a brick with a distance inscribed. Straight past that in the woods on left side is the next hole. Rest should be self-explanatory.
